There is no permanent geopolitical safe haven. Stocks often fall immediately after a major shock, but the size and duration depend on the country, sector and event. Government bonds may rise when investors seek safety, or fall when inflation, emergency borrowing or sovereign-credit concerns dominate. Gold can benefit from uncertainty while still being pulled by interest rates, the US dollar and market momentum. “Cash” is not one asset: a bank deposit, money-market fund, currency note and short-term government bill carry different risks.

The most useful way to compare stocks, bonds, gold and cash is to identify the shock’s transmission channel, then separate the first market reaction from what may happen over months or years. Historical averages describe particular events; they are not a forecast for the next conflict, sanctions announcement or policy break.

Why geopolitical risk moves asset prices before the economic damage is visible

Geopolitical risk affects markets through two overlapping channels. The economic channel changes expected trade, supply, production, growth, inflation, government borrowing and corporate cash flows. The sentiment channel changes uncertainty, confidence and willingness to hold risky positions. Prices can therefore move when a conflict is threatened or a policy decision is announced, before factories close or official economic data changes.

A supply disruption involving energy, food, shipping or critical components can raise input costs and inflation expectations. Sanctions or export controls can reduce sales into a market and force companies to redesign supply chains. Governments may spend more on defense, energy support or reconstruction, increasing future borrowing. At the same time, investors may reduce exposure to assets whose value depends on optimistic growth assumptions.

Those forces do not point in one direction for every asset. A commodity exporter and an energy-intensive importer can experience the same event very differently. A company supplying defense equipment can have different exposure from a consumer business that depends on discretionary spending. The country where an investor holds an asset also matters because its currency, institutions and sovereign finances are part of the risk.

What the historical evidence actually shows

The International Monetary Fund’s Global Financial Stability Report (April 2025) examined defined major global geopolitical-risk events. In that sample, aggregate stock prices declined immediately by about 3% on average. Some events produced a larger average decline of up to 9% across countries. The report also observed average recovery within a month, while larger shocks could persist. These are results for the report’s event selection and measurement window, not a rule that every future event will cause a 3% fall or a one-month rebound. Read the IMF chapter.

Bond results were conditional rather than uniform. In advanced economies, median government-bond yields generally declined after major events, consistent with some safe-haven buying. The average was pushed higher by large outliers, showing why a single global bond number can mislead. Yields can rise instead when inflation, emergency fiscal borrowing or sovereign-credit risk is the dominant concern. Because bond prices and yields move in opposite directions, a yield increase means a price decline for an existing fixed-rate bond, all else equal.

Gold’s response is also multi-factor. The World Gold Council’s 2026 framework identifies economic expansion, risk and uncertainty, opportunity cost and momentum as major influences. Its H1 2026 analysis, published July 1, attributed a significant portion of gold’s movement to elevated geopolitical risk and market volatility, while momentum and repriced expectations for rates and the dollar also mattered. See the H1 2026 outlook.

At-a-glance comparison

Asset Immediate reaction that has been observed What can reverse or reinforce it Income, issuer and liquidity considerations
Stocks Aggregate prices fell about 3% on average after major events in the IMF sample; some events produced declines of up to 9% across countries. Expected earnings, discount rates, sector exposure, trade disruption, commodity prices and investor confidence. Companies are the issuers; shares have no promised repayment and can remain highly liquid while prices are volatile.
Government bonds Median yields in advanced economies generally declined in the IMF sample, although averages were lifted by large outliers. Safe-haven demand can lower yields; inflation, borrowing needs or sovereign-credit risk can raise yields and spreads. Fixed coupons and maturity repayment depend on the sovereign; price changes are reflected through yields.
Gold Risk and volatility contributed significantly to movement in the first half of 2026, according to the World Gold Council. Real and nominal yields, the US dollar, investor positioning, physical demand and momentum can outweigh or amplify risk sentiment. Gold has no issuer promising repayment and pays no regular income; returns depend on the sale price and can be volatile.
Cash The cited evidence does not establish a general response during geopolitical events. Currency, inflation, deposit or fund structure, and the credit quality of the institution or government holding the cash. Liquidity and nominal stability vary among notes, deposits, money-market funds and short-term government bills.

Stocks: fast repricing of growth, earnings and risk

Why shares often drop first

A geopolitical shock can reduce the cash flows investors expect from companies or increase the discount rate applied to those cash flows. Lower confidence can trigger a broad reduction in risk-taking even when the direct operational damage is limited. The IMF’s approximately 3% average immediate decline captures that aggregate repricing in its historical sample, but it does not imply that every company or market fell by the same amount.

Country and sector differences

Exposure to local and global demand creates important differences. An importer facing higher energy or shipping costs may see margins compressed, while a producer of the scarce commodity may benefit from higher prices. Exporters can lose demand if sanctions or retaliation close a market. Energy and defense businesses can have different exposures from airlines, manufacturers that depend on just-in-time components, or consumer companies whose customers postpone purchases.

Market-wide indexes also combine companies with different currencies and financing structures. A domestic firm may be affected mainly by local confidence and rates; a multinational may face translation losses, blocked payments or supply-chain changes across several jurisdictions. Country-level results in the IMF study varied substantially, so a global index cannot be treated as a universal template.

Immediate versus longer-term stock behavior

The first move reflects uncertainty and positioning as much as realized profits. In the IMF sample, average recovery occurred within a month, but large shocks could persist. A recovery therefore should not be read as a guarantee: it may occur if the event is contained, policy support restores confidence or earnings prove resilient. If the event creates lasting production losses, a prolonged inflation problem or a recession, the valuation and earnings effects can remain.

Bonds: safety demand versus inflation and sovereign risk

Government bonds are not one single hedge

High-quality government debt can attract buyers when investors seek liquidity and a relatively dependable issuer. That demand pushes prices up and yields down. The IMF’s finding that median yields in advanced economies generally declined is consistent with this flight-to-safety mechanism. However, the same report’s higher average, caused by large outliers, shows that some markets moved the other way.

When yields rise during a crisis

If the shock threatens energy or food supplies, investors may expect higher inflation and demand more yield to hold fixed payments. Governments may also issue substantial debt for defense, subsidies or emergency relief. A weaker fiscal position can widen sovereign spreads, especially where repayment capacity is questioned. In those circumstances, the inflation and credit channels can dominate safe-haven buying, producing falling bond prices rather than a rally.

Government versus corporate credit

A corporate bond includes the company’s default and refinancing risk in addition to interest-rate risk. A geopolitical event that damages a sector’s sales or access to funding can widen its credit spread even if top-quality government bonds rally. Comparing “bonds” without identifying the issuer, maturity, currency and credit quality hides this difference. A short-maturity instrument will generally have less sensitivity to a rate move than a long-maturity bond, but it still carries issuer and currency risks.

Gold: uncertainty exposure without a guaranteed hedge

Why gold can gain

Gold has no issuer promising repayment and no regular coupon or dividend. Investors therefore rely on its market price. During periods of fear and volatility, demand for an asset not tied to a particular company or government can increase. The World Gold Council’s July 1, 2026 outlook said elevated geopolitical risk and volatility explained a significant share of gold’s movement in the first half of the year.

Why the reaction is not mechanical

Gold’s opportunity cost matters: when yields on competing assets rise, holding a non-income-producing asset can become less attractive. A stronger US dollar can also weigh on the dollar price of gold, while a weaker dollar can improve its appeal to dollar-based buyers. Momentum, investor positioning, economic growth and physical demand can reinforce or counteract a risk-driven move. As Juan Carlos Artigas of the World Gold Council put it on July 1, 2026, “Rates matter, and we expect them to be a key variable in the second half. But gold’s performance is not driven by a single factor.” Read the statement.

Volatility and diversification limits

Gold can diversify because it behaves differently from equities and bonds, not because it is consistently low-volatility. The World Gold Council notes years with returns near +30% and near −30%. Those observations describe the range of annual outcomes it highlights; they are not a promise about any particular year or geopolitical event. A gain during one shock does not make gold a guaranteed hedge for the next one. Review the risks and challenges.

Cash: define the instrument before judging the outcome

“Cash” can mean physical currency, an insured bank deposit, a money-market fund or a short-term government bill. They differ in who owes the money, how quickly it can be accessed, how its value responds to inflation and which currency the holder ultimately needs.

  • Physical currency: has no account intermediary, but its purchasing power can fall with inflation and its foreign-exchange value can change.
  • Bank deposits: are claims on a bank. Access, insurance limits and the bank’s operating environment matter, as does the deposit currency.
  • Money-market funds: hold short-term instruments and offer liquidity, but their value and access depend on the fund structure, its holdings and market functioning.
  • Short-term government bills: may have limited interest-rate sensitivity because of their short maturity, yet they still expose the holder to the issuing government and currency.

The available evidence does not support a universal statement that cash always rises during geopolitical stress or always preserves real value. Nominal stability in one currency does not remove inflation risk, and a cash balance in the wrong currency can lose purchasing power relative to future expenses. Evaluate the specific instrument, issuer, access terms and currency rather than treating “cash” as a single safe-haven category.

How the type of shock changes the ranking

Inflationary or supply-driven shock

When the dominant threat is a shortage of energy, food, shipping capacity or industrial inputs, inflation expectations and interest rates can rise. Import-dependent companies may suffer, long-duration bonds can lose value as yields rise, and gold may face a tug-of-war between inflation anxiety and higher opportunity cost. Cash avoids mark-to-market losses if its nominal balance is fixed, but inflation can erode what that balance buys.

Flight-to-safety shock

If investors mainly fear disorder, contagion or a sudden loss of confidence, they may sell risky shares and seek liquid, high-quality sovereign debt. That can lower government-bond yields. Gold may also benefit from demand for an asset without a corporate or sovereign issuer, although currency and rate movements can interrupt the advance. Corporate bonds can lag government debt because their credit spreads may widen.

Fiscal or sovereign-credit shock

If the event raises doubts about a government’s finances or repayment capacity, that government’s bonds can sell off rather than rally. Its currency may weaken, imported inflation may rise and domestic stocks may face both higher discount rates and lower demand. Assets denominated in another currency are not automatically safe: exchange-rate moves can add gains or losses for the holder.

A practical framework for interpreting a new event

  1. Classify the first-order threat: ask whether it is primarily a supply disruption, demand shock, financial-contagion event, policy change or sovereign-credit problem.
  2. Separate price from yield: for bonds, record both the price move and the yield or spread move; a falling yield means a rising price for the existing fixed-rate bond.
  3. Identify the issuer and currency: distinguish a company from a sovereign, and a domestic-currency asset from one exposed to foreign-exchange movement.
  4. Map local and global demand: check whether the asset benefits from the affected commodity, region or industry or depends on it.
  5. Use a time horizon: label the observation as an immediate market reaction, a one-month adjustment or a longer earnings and inflation outcome.
  6. Test the competing drivers: for gold and bonds especially, compare risk sentiment with rates, the dollar, inflation expectations, fiscal needs and positioning.
  7. Treat historical averages as context: the IMF’s 3% average stock decline and up-to-9% larger event impact summarize a selected sample; they do not set a target for a future trade.

What a balanced conclusion looks like

Stocks have the clearest historical pattern of an immediate decline after major geopolitical events, but country and sector effects vary and recovery is not assured. Government bonds can provide a safety bid when deflationary fear and liquidity demand dominate, yet inflation, borrowing and sovereign risk can reverse that result. Gold offers a different exposure and may respond positively to uncertainty, but it has no income and can experience large losses. Cash is the least meaningful category until its form, issuer and currency are specified, and the cited evidence does not justify a universal geopolitical cash rule.

Use these patterns to ask better questions about a particular event rather than to assign any asset a permanent safe-haven label. The event’s mechanism, the asset’s issuer and currency, and the time horizon determine which historical analogy is relevant.
