Tech Mahindra delivered the biggest boost
Tech Mahindra was the strongest Sensex constituent, climbing 8.45%. The move followed its July–September FY27 results, which showed consolidated net profit rising 32.74% to Rs 1,585.6 crore.
Other major technology winners
- Tata Consultancy Services rose 4.61%.
- Infosys gained 4.55%.
- HCLTech advanced 1.08%.
Bharti Airtel, Mahindra & Mahindra and Bajaj Finance were also among the notable gainers. InterGlobe Aviation, Reliance Industries, Asian Paints and Bharat Electronics were listed among the session’s biggest laggards, showing that the rally was selective even within the large-cap universe.

Why analysts said Indian shares rose
Vinod Nair, head of research at Geojit Investments Limited, attributed the recovery to sustained IT buying after strong quarterly results and upbeat management commentary. In his view, those signals improved confidence in the sector’s earnings outlook. He also pointed to softer crude oil prices and a strengthening rupee as supports for sentiment.
Ajit Mishra, senior vice-president of research at Religare Broking, said the second-day rebound was primarily driven by IT stocks responding to quarterly results, with other sectors providing support. He also said the rupee’s appreciation against the US dollar offered relief to domestic sentiment.
These are analysts’ explanations for the day’s move, not a guarantee that the same factors will drive subsequent sessions.
Global and macroeconomic signals
- Brent crude fell 0.30% to USD 105.6 per barrel, easing one pressure point for oil-importing India.
- Asian markets, including South Korea’s Kospi, Japan’s Nikkei 225, Shanghai’s SSE Composite and Hong Kong’s Hang Seng, ended higher.
- European markets were mostly positive, while US markets had closed higher on Thursday.
- Foreign institutional investors sold Indian equities worth Rs 5,285.37 crore on Thursday, a counterweight to the domestic and sector-specific buying seen in the latest session.
The combination of stronger overseas cues and domestic IT earnings helped benchmarks rise despite the recent foreign-investor selling.

SEBI changes the closing-auction and derivatives framework
On October 16, SEBI revised the Closing Auction Session after reviewing the existing framework, considering public comments, receiving recommendations from its Secondary Market Advisory Committee and discussing the changes with stock exchanges.
Revised closing-auction timing
The 10-minute closing auction now runs from 3:30 pm to 3:40 pm on trading days. This session determines closing prices through the auction process rather than ordinary continuous trading.
Best Value
Derivatives trading and expiring contracts
Stock and index derivatives generally continue until 3:45 pm. Expiring index derivatives are an exception to that general schedule.
For derivatives that expire, settlement is based on a volume-weighted average price calculated from the final 30 minutes of continuous trading. Traders should therefore distinguish the closing-auction window for cash-market securities from the settlement methodology and schedule that apply to expiring derivatives.

The headline gains in the Sensex and Nifty mask a narrower leadership pattern. Large IT companies and selected heavyweight stocks carried the benchmarks, while the declines in the BSE MidCap Select and SmallCap Select indices showed that buying did not extend uniformly to smaller companies. Investors reading the advance as a broad-based risk-on move should account for that concentration.
The Bottom Line
Indian benchmarks finished higher for a second day on October 16, 2026, because strong IT-sector buying—led by Tech Mahindra’s results and gains in TCS and Infosys—outweighed weaker breadth in mid- and small-caps. A firmer rupee, lower Brent crude and positive global markets supported the move, while SEBI’s revised 3:30–3:40 pm closing auction and final-30-minute VWAP rule changed the day’s market mechanics.
