Steve and Alex use the same player character, but their default skin models are not shaped the same. Steve is associated with Minecraft’s classic, wide-arm model, while Alex is associated with the slim-arm model. The arm geometry is the meaningful structural difference; hair, clothing colors, and other visible details belong to the skin artwork rather than a different set of abilities.
That distinction matters when you create or import a skin, choose a model in a profile, or wonder why sleeves look misaligned. A skin painted for the wrong arm type can show missing, shifted, or oddly wrapped pixels even when the image otherwise looks correct. The guide below separates model geometry from cosmetic artwork and explains how to identify the model you are actually using.

Steve and Alex at a glance
The simplest answer to “Steve vs Alex” is a comparison of arm models. Steve represents the classic model, whose arms are four pixels wide in the skin layout. Alex represents the slim model, whose arms are three pixels wide. The slim version removes one quarter of the arm width used by the classic version, so the difference is visible along the player’s silhouette, especially at the wrists and upper arms.

Everything else that looks different in a screenshot—hair color, shirt, trousers, facial pixels, and accessories—is part of the particular skin design. It is not evidence that Steve and Alex have different movement, health, damage, crafting, or other gameplay statistics. Treat the names as labels for default character appearances and model choices, not as character classes.

The pixel counts describe the rendered arm column, not a recommendation for a particular image editor. When a skin is mapped to the slim model, the narrower arm changes how the side, front, and back regions wrap around the geometry. A texture can therefore contain the right colors yet still look wrong if it is assigned to the other model.
Why the arm difference is visible
Silhouette and spacing
In third-person view, the arms hang beside the torso. A one-pixel reduction on each arm’s width changes the negative space between the arm and body and makes Alex’s outline look less bulky. The change is most obvious when the character stands still, wears a short-sleeved shirt, or is viewed against a plain background.
Sleeves and layered clothing
Modern skins can use an outer layer for jackets, sleeves, hats, and similar details. The inner arm and its outer sleeve still have to agree with the selected model. A sleeve painted for a wide arm may overhang or leave an unexpected gap when displayed on a slim arm. Conversely, a slim-arm sleeve can appear clipped or uneven on a classic model.
Texture pixels are interpreted by the model
The Minecraft Wiki’s Skin page notes that the slim model ignores the rightmost pixels of the skin image’s arm area. Those pixels exist in the shared texture layout but are not rendered as part of a three-pixel-wide arm. This is why changing only the profile setting can make an existing skin appear to lose a stripe or trim: the model is reading the same image through a different arm map.
How to identify the model you are using
Use the arms as a visual test
- Put the skin on your player.
- Switch to a clear third-person view so both arms are visible from the front and side.
- Look at the wrist and forearm outline. A classic arm has the wider block profile; a slim arm has the narrower profile.
- Check a straight-on pose rather than a running or swinging animation. Movement can hide the one-pixel difference.
- If the skin has bulky sleeves, hats, or large shoulder decorations, temporarily use a plain skin or inspect the inner arm so the base geometry is easier to see.
Hair color is not a reliable test. A skin can copy Steve’s or Alex’s colors while using the other model, and custom skins can use any palette.

Check the Java profile setting
The Minecraft Wiki identifies a Java Edition profile-page control for choosing between the three-pixel slim model and the four-pixel classic model. Menu labels and account pages can change, so look for the skin or model option in the current official profile interface rather than relying on an old screenshot. If the selector is available, the selected model is authoritative for that Java profile; the skin image alone does not tell you which option is active.

Do not assume that a missing control means the skin has no model. Bedrock Edition, console releases, managed accounts, launchers, and third-party skin workflows can present different controls. In that situation, identify the arm shape in-game and verify the skin in the edition’s own character-creator or skin screen. The evidence available for this comparison does not establish one universal Bedrock menu path, so edition and platform should be treated separately.
Creating or converting a skin
Choose the target model before painting
Start by deciding whether the finished skin is intended for classic or slim arms. Most skin editors have a model toggle or separate templates. Select it before drawing sleeves, cuffs, armor, or thin stripes. If you paint first and change the model later, details at the outer edge of each arm may be ignored or shifted.
Keep arm details symmetrical when appropriate
A stripe that runs around a classic arm needs a different placement on a slim arm because the side surface is narrower. Paint the front, side, back, and inner surfaces deliberately instead of copying one rectangle across every face. Check the character preview from several angles; a pattern that looks centered from the front can be off-center on the side.
Use the preview as a rendering check
- Apply the base skin with no outer-layer clothing.
- Rotate the preview through front, back, and both sides.
- Confirm that cuffs meet the hands and that shoulder seams meet the torso.
- Enable the outer layer and check that sleeves do not float, clip, or expose an unintended strip of the inner arm.
- Export or upload only after the preview matches the intended model.
If a tool offers separate classic and slim exports, keep both only when you have deliberately painted both. Renaming a file does not convert its geometry.

A third-party guide lists the following default arm assignments. Because that guide is secondary and the available evidence does not verify every current edition, treat this as a practical reference rather than a timeless rule.

The same guide says Steve and Alex were made available in both arm models after a 2022 texture update. That detail is not independently verified here, and edition, platform, and game version can affect what appears in a character menu. If a current menu offers a model toggle for either name, trust the option shown in that menu rather than an older list of defaults.
Steve, Alex, and custom skins
The name does not lock the geometry
Players commonly use “Steve skin” to mean the familiar default appearance and “Alex skin” to mean the familiar slim appearance. Custom skins break that shortcut. A skin based on Steve’s colors can be authored for slim arms, and a skin using Alex’s colors can be authored for classic arms. The model selection and the artwork are related but independent.
What changes when you switch models
Switching the model changes the way the arm texture is wrapped and rendered. It does not recolor the rest of the skin, replace the face, or redesign the torso. If the new silhouette looks correct but a sleeve pattern is missing, inspect the arm-region mapping rather than repainting the entire character.
What does not change
- Player movement and combat rules are not identified as different for Steve and Alex.
- The model choice does not create a separate inventory, crafting system, or progression path.
- A multiplayer server sees a player using a skin/model appearance; the choice is not a gameplay class.
Common problems and fixes
A sleeve has a missing strip
Likely cause: The skin was painted for a classic arm but is being rendered as slim, so the outermost arm pixels are not used.
Fix: Set the intended model in the editor or profile, then repaint the sleeve using that model’s template. Do not fill the missing area blindly until you have confirmed which model should be active.
The arm looks too thick
Likely cause: A slim design is being shown with the classic model, or the skin was exported with the wrong template.

Fix: Compare the in-game arm outline with the editor preview. Select slim for a narrow silhouette, or rebuild the arm details on the classic template if the wider shape is intentional.

One side looks correct and the other looks broken
Likely cause: The texture was mirrored or copied without accounting for the different face order around the arm.
Fix: Inspect each arm face separately in the preview. Re-align front, side, back, and inner details instead of duplicating one face across the entire arm.
The skin preview and in-game character disagree
Likely cause: The preview is using one model while the account or game profile is using another, or the game is showing a cached appearance.
Fix: Re-select the skin and model in the official character/profile screen, save the change, restart the relevant game session, and verify again in a stationary third-person view. If the discrepancy persists, test a plain skin to separate an account-setting issue from a texture-mapping issue.
A guide’s default list does not match the menu
Likely cause: The list describes a different release, platform, or character set. Default assignments are not a safe substitute for the current in-game setting.

Fix: Use the model shown by the current character screen and inspect the arms directly. Record the edition and platform when asking for support, because a Java profile option does not establish the same control path on Bedrock or console.

There is no performance or gameplay advantage to either model. The practical choice is visual: decide how wide you want the arms to look and whether your clothing artwork was built for that geometry.
What is known—and what should not be assumed
The reliable core distinction is the arm model: Minecraft Wiki pages describe Steve with the classic four-pixel-wide arms and Alex with the slim three-pixel-wide arms. The same Skin page explains that the slim mapping does not render the rightmost arm pixels. Those points are sufficient to identify the models and fix most sleeve problems.

Several commonly repeated details need more caution. Skin-format dimensions should not be inferred from an isolated snippet; a conflicting report gave dimensions that do not match the modern format, so no single size is quoted here. Likewise, reported introduction dates for Alex and a claimed half-pixel adjustment in a later release are not established by the available evidence and should not be used to date or diagnose a skin. Check official release notes or the current Minecraft Wiki page if a version-specific historical answer is essential.
Bottom line for players and skin artists
Use the arm silhouette, not hair color or the character’s name, to determine the model. Keep the profile setting, editor template, and sleeve artwork aligned. Steve’s familiar appearance is tied to the classic wide-arm shape, while Alex’s is tied to the slim shape, but custom skins can use either model. Once the geometry is correct, the remaining differences are simply the pixels you chose to paint.
