The fairest way to compare Steve Madden with Naturalizer, Nine West, or Sam Edelman is model against model—not brand against brand. Match the occasion, silhouette, heel height and base, materials, available fit options, current price, and return terms. Then look for comfort or durability evidence for that exact shoe. The available listings do not establish a brand-wide winner, so a careful comparison is more useful than declaring one label universally better.

Steve Madden’s official kitten-heel category describes the style as typically one to two inches tall and positions it as an alternative to a four-inch stiletto. The same page says, “The kitten heel is typically one to two inches tall, which means all-day comfort and sophistication.” That sentence is promotional copy from the brand, not independent testing or a guarantee that every wearer will find the style comfortable. When comparing a kitten heel with another low heel, check the actual heel placement, toe room, insole, and upper material.
Block, wedge, stiletto, and other bases
A block heel has a wider contact area than a narrow stiletto, but width alone does not reveal whether the shoe suits your foot. A wedge distributes support along more of the sole, while a kitten heel changes the angle of the foot with a shorter rise. A slingback or ankle strap can change security without changing height. Record the base shape and strap placement for every candidate so that you are comparing like with like.

1. Define the occasion and walking requirements
Write down where and how long you expect to wear the shoes. “A formal event with a short walk from car to venue” is a different requirement from “an eight-hour workday with stairs.” Note whether the floor will be smooth, uneven, wet, or outdoors, and whether you need to carry the shoes in luggage. This prevents a highly embellished sandal from being judged against a practical pump for the wrong reason.
2. Match the silhouette

If the product page does not state a measurement, record it as not stated instead of estimating from a photograph. Include platform height when a platform is present, because the difference between platform and heel affects the effective angle.
4. Check upper, lining, and finish materials
Steve Madden’s category pages show options described as leather, suede, metallic, and patent, while individual retailer listings identify materials and finishes for specific products. Those labels do not describe every shoe in the brand. Compare the actual model’s upper and lining, and note whether a finish is likely to show scuffs, stretch, or water marks.

Material affects appearance and care, but it does not by itself prove comfort or longevity. Two shoes listed as leather can differ in thickness, lining, internal structure, and finishing. If a page names only the upper material and says nothing about the lining or footbed, mark those details as not stated.
5. Compare sizes, widths, and toe construction
Fit is model-specific. DSW’s heel-category guidance notes that fit can vary by brand, style, and material. Do not automatically size up or down because another shoe from the same label fit differently. Check the current size chart, offered widths, toe shape, heel-counter description, and model-specific wearer comments where available.
Look for practical fit signals:
- Whether the widest part of your foot sits over the shoe’s widest point.
- Whether your heel lifts when you take a normal step.
- Whether straps can be adjusted without cutting into the ankle or forefoot.
- Whether the toe box leaves room for your toes to lie flat rather than being forced together.
- Whether the material is described as structured, soft, stretch, or synthetic, all of which can affect how the shoe breaks in.
Reviews can reveal recurring reports of slipping or rubbing, but they are not a substitute for a consistent fit test. Separate comments about one size or color from patterns that appear across the model.
6. Separate documented support from marketing language
Some product pages identify cushioning, padded footbeds, arch support, flexible construction, or anti-slip details. Treat those as model-specific features and verify that the description applies to the exact color and version you are buying. A category slogan about comfort is not evidence that every heel from the brand feels the same.
The available material does not provide independent, head-to-head wear testing for Steve Madden, Naturalizer, Nine West, or Sam Edelman. It therefore cannot support a categorical claim that one of these brands is more comfortable or more durable. If comfort is the priority, weigh the model’s geometry, fit, documented padding, and credible wearer reports together.
7. Compare the complete purchase terms
Record the current price, whether the item is on clearance, shipping cost, return window, return shipping rules, restocking fees if any, and exclusions for final-sale items. A low displayed price can be less valuable if the shoe cannot be returned after an indoor fit check. Policies can differ between a retailer and a brand’s own store, so read the policy attached to the actual order channel.

On the pages checked on October 13, 2026, DSW displayed sampled Steve Madden heels and pumps from roughly $44 to $140, including clearance listings. Steve Madden’s kitten-heel page showed examples from roughly $40 to $150. These are dated listing observations, not stable price bands; individual models, colors, sizes, promotions, and inventory can change the amount shown at checkout.
Naturalizer
Use Naturalizer as a comparator only after selecting a matching model. Compare a pump with a pump or a block-heel sandal with a block-heel sandal at a similar height. Check the exact upper, lining, footbed description, width options, and current return terms rather than assuming that the brand’s general reputation applies to every design.
Nine West
For Nine West, record the same fields: silhouette, heel height, base, toe shape, materials, sizes and widths, model-specific fit comments, price, and return eligibility. A visually similar pump can fit differently if its toe is narrower, its heel counter is lower, or its upper uses a less forgiving finish.
Sam Edelman
Sam Edelman belongs in the same comparison set when the model matches the occasion and construction. How to test fit without damaging a return
- Confirm that the seller accepts returns for the condition in which you plan to try the shoes. Do not remove protective materials until you have read the policy.
- Try both shoes indoors on a clean, hard surface while wearing the socks, tights, or bare feet you expect to use.
- Stand for several minutes, then walk, turn, climb a few steps, and sit. Watch for heel lift, toe pressure, strap movement, and any edge that rubs.
- Check the fit again after your feet warm up. A shoe that feels fine for a few seconds may become restrictive after several minutes.

Materials, finish, and care differences
Leather
Leather may soften and develop a different appearance with wear, but the exact finish determines how it should be cleaned and protected. Keep care instructions supplied with the model and test any product in an inconspicuous area.
Suede
Suede can show water and oil marks more readily than smooth finishes. Use the care method specified for that shoe and avoid treating it as if it were patent or coated leather.
Patent and metallic finishes

After narrowing the list to two or three models, score each one against the needs that matter to you. Use a simple 1-to-5 scale, but keep the evidence attached to each score so that a promotional claim does not become a false measurement.

Mistake: treating retailer placement as a ranking
Seeing several brands in one retailer’s category means they are available for comparison, not that the retailer has certified them as equal or ranked them by performance. Fix this by matching individual models and recording evidence for each.

Mistake: comparing a clearance price with a regular price
Clearance and promotional prices can make one brand look cheaper on a particular day. Fix this by labeling every price as regular, sale, or clearance and checking whether the return policy changes.
Mistake: assuming a lower heel is automatically comfortable
Height does not reveal toe-box shape, pressure points, lining, or heel security. Fix this by checking the complete construction and performing an indoor fit test.
Mistake: using one shoe’s fit to predict another
Different lasts, materials, straps, and toe shapes can fit differently within the same brand. Fix this by treating each model as its own sizing decision.
