The quickest check is the headset’s power-button LED—not the microphone LED. SteelSeries uses that LED to report an estimated battery range, but the color chart differs between older Arctis models and Nova models. To verify that the battery is actually gaining charge, connect the correct cable to a known-working USB power source, then check the level in SteelSeries Engine, a compatible mobile app, or a supported transmitter/gamehub OLED display. A color by itself is not a universal “charging in progress” animation.
What the LED actually tells you
On SteelSeries headsets without a swappable battery, the power-button LED is the battery indicator. SteelSeries states that “The colour of the headset power button LED (not the microphone LED) indicates the battery level.” You can read the manufacturer’s full guidance in SteelSeries Support’s battery-level and charging article.
That distinction matters because the microphone LED has its own status function. Looking at it will not tell you whether the battery is low or full. The power LED also should not be treated as a universal charging-progress meter: the support guidance defines battery-level ranges, not a guaranteed sequence of colors that proves current is flowing while the cable is connected.
Use the correct color chart for your headset family
First identify whether your headset is one of the older Arctis models covered by SteelSeries’ older-Arctis list or a Nova model. The lower color bands are different, so applying the wrong chart can make a normal reading look incorrect.

| Headset family in SteelSeries’ support guidance | Green | Yellow | Orange | Red |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Older Arctis | 100–50% | 49–20% | Not listed | 19–10%; fast-blinking red at 9–1% |
| Nova | 100–50% | 49–15% | 14–6% | 5–0% |
Green has the same stated range for both groups: 100–50%. The difference appears below 50%: older Arctis guidance moves from yellow to red, while Nova guidance includes a separate orange range and reserves red for 5–0%. These are battery-level estimates supplied by SteelSeries; they do not establish how quickly the level is changing during a particular charging session.
SteelSeries also describes a beep at the lowest battery levels, around 15%. Treat that sound as an approximate low-battery warning, not confirmation that a charger is connected or working.
How to charge a SteelSeries headset
For Arctis and Nova headsets without swappable batteries, SteelSeries’ basic method is to connect the charging cable to the headset’s charging jack and connect the other end to a USB power source. Depending on the model, that jack is Micro-USB or USB-C. The same port may also be used for firmware updates on Arctis models.

- Inspect the charging port. Make sure the socket is clear and that the plug can seat fully without unusual looseness.
- Insert the matching cable. Use Micro-USB or USB-C as required by the headset. Do not force a connector.
- Connect to USB power. A wall adapter, computer USB port, or powered hub can be used as a test source. If one source produces no response, test another known-working source.
- Allow the headset to respond. Check the power-button LED, then verify the battery level through Engine, a supported app, or a compatible base station as described below.
- Recheck the level after use or a charging period. Because the LED colors are ranges rather than a charging animation, a battery-level reading that rises is stronger evidence of charging than a color seen immediately after plugging in.
Ways to verify the battery level beyond the earcup LED
SteelSeries Engine on a computer
SteelSeries says battery levels can be viewed in the Engine gear tab for all of its headsets. Connect the headset or its wireless transmitter as your model requires, open Engine, and select the gear/settings view for the device. The displayed level gives you a second reading when the LED color is ambiguous or when you want to check whether the percentage has increased.
SteelSeries’ mobile app
Mobile battery checks are limited to the compatible devices listed by SteelSeries, rather than every headset. The listed products include Arctis Nova Elite, Arctis Pro Omni, Arctis Nova 7, 7X and 7P generations 1 and 2, Arctis Nova 5, SteelSeries GameBuds, and Nova 3 Wireless. If your model is not on that list, use Engine or the headset’s other supported indicator instead of assuming the app will report it.
Transmitter or gamehub OLED display
Owners of Nova Pro Omni, Nova Elite, Nova Pro Wireless, and Arctis Pro Wireless can use the battery icon on the applicable gamehub or base-station OLED display. These models have a battery compartment. The battery inside the headset can also be charged through USB-C beneath the left speaker plate, so make sure the battery is seated correctly before diagnosing a cable problem.
How to tell whether it is charging, not merely showing a color
A color that appears after you plug in the cable only tells you the battery indication currently falls within a stated range. It does not prove that the battery is gaining charge. For a practical confirmation:
- Record the level shown in Engine, the compatible app, or the base-station display.
- Keep the headset connected to a confirmed power source.
- Check the same display again later and look for a higher level or a corresponding change in the battery range.
- If the level never changes, test the cable, port, and power source in the order in the troubleshooting section.
Do not use the microphone LED as a substitute, and do not interpret the approximate 15% beep as evidence that charging has started.

Choose the right replacement cable
Cable type is model-dependent. SteelSeries’ replacement-cable guidance is at Where can I get a replacement charger cable for my headset?.
| Models or family identified by SteelSeries | Charging connector | Replacement guidance |
|---|---|---|
| Arctis Nova line | USB-C | Use a compatible USB-A-to-USB-C cable when that matches the power source and headset port. |
| Arctis 7+, 7P+, and 7X+ | USB-C | SteelSeries lists a USB-A-to-USB-C replacement cable for these newer models. |
| Older wireless models | Micro-USB | SteelSeries says it no longer sells these cables directly; select a data-capable Micro-USB cable rather than a charge-only cable. |
Check the physical port, the packaging, or the exact product page before buying. A cable advertised as “USB-C” is not automatically compatible with every headset, and a replacement cable cannot by itself prove that the headset’s charging circuit is healthy. First test with a known-working cable and power source whenever possible.
Troubleshoot a headset that appears not to charge
Follow this sequence before attempting a reset. It isolates simple connection problems without applying instructions from the wrong model.
1. Clear the charging port
Look for lint, dust, or other debris in the headset socket. A plug that cannot seat fully may provide an intermittent connection. Disconnect power before cleaning and avoid forcing anything into the port.
2. Examine the cable and connectors
Check for kinks, cuts, bent ends, or a connector that feels loose. If the cable only works when held at an angle, stop relying on it and test a replacement of the correct connector type. For older Micro-USB models, use a data-capable cable as SteelSeries recommends, not a charge-only lead.
3. Try another compatible cable
Use a cable known to work with another device, while still matching the headset’s USB-C or Micro-USB port. A different cable is a diagnostic step, not a guarantee that any cable with the same plug will support every headset function.
4. Change the USB power source
Test a known-working wall adapter, computer port, or powered hub. SteelSeries’ general troubleshooting guidance recommends checking that the source supplies enough power. If the headset responds on one source but not another, the original source or its connection is the likely variable.
5. Recheck the reading in software or on the display
After changing the cable or source, look in Engine’s gear tab, the compatible mobile app, or the applicable gamehub/base-station OLED display. A stable or rising battery reading is more informative than a one-time LED color.

6. Use only the reset procedure for your exact model
SteelSeries lists reset switches for some headsets, but the location and required hold time vary. Consult the support instructions for the exact model before inserting a pin or holding a button. Do not transfer a reset location or timing from one Arctis or Nova model to another.
Arctis 7: model-specific reset and checks
For an Arctis 7 that will not turn on or charge, SteelSeries gives additional checks in Arctis 7 Won’t Turn On / Charge. Confirm that the USB source supplies enough power, test the cable and port with another device, and inspect the headset connection.
The Arctis 7 reset pinhole is beneath the left ear cushion on the microphone side. SteelSeries describes holding the reset switch for about one second. This instruction is specifically for the Arctis 7; it should not be treated as a universal Arctis reset method.

SteelSeries says wireless Arctis headsets can be used while charging. Platform behavior and connection requirements can still vary by model, so keep the correct wireless transmitter or wired connection in place as your headset requires.
For Arctis Nova 3 Wireless, SteelSeries specifically says the included USB-C cable supports simultaneous use and charging, with some console functionality varying by platform. Its support page is Can I use the Arctis Nova 3 Wireless while charging?.
Nova 3 Wireless charging figures
SteelSeries gives two timing figures for Nova 3 Wireless: “A full charge takes around 3 hours,” and “A quick 15-minute charge provides up to 6 hours of playtime.” Those statements apply specifically to Nova 3 Wireless and should not be generalized to every Arctis or Nova headset. The manufacturer does not provide a universal full-charge time in the general battery-level guidance.
Identify your model before interpreting any symptom
Many charging mistakes come from using a valid instruction for the wrong headset. Before selecting a cable, LED chart, app, or reset method, confirm:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

- The complete model name, including suffixes such as 7+, 7P+, or 7X+.
- Whether the headset is an older Arctis model or part of the Nova family.
- Whether the charging port is USB-C or Micro-USB.
- Whether the headset has a removable battery compartment and a matching base station or gamehub.
- Whether your device appears on SteelSeries’ compatible mobile-app list.
This short identification step prevents the most common errors: reading a Nova color range as an older-Arctis range, buying a Micro-USB cable for a USB-C headset, or attempting a reset meant for another model.

Compare the available battery checks
| Method | What it shows | When to use it | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Power-button LED | Battery range by color | Fast check at the headset | Ranges differ between older Arctis and Nova; it is not a charging-progress animation. |
| Engine gear tab | Battery level in software | Computer users and charging verification | Requires the headset or its transmitter to be recognized. |
| Compatible mobile app | Battery level on supported devices | Owners of listed models | Not every SteelSeries headset is supported. |
| Gamehub/base-station OLED | Battery icon or level | Models supplied with the applicable display | Only specific Nova Pro, Nova Elite, and Arctis Pro variants have this option. |
Use two methods when diagnosing a failure: the LED tells you the headset’s immediate range, while software or an OLED display lets you compare readings over time. A repeatable increase is the useful test; a single color is only a snapshot.
Common misconceptions that lead to false charging diagnoses
“The microphone light changed, so the battery must be charging.”
Incorrect. SteelSeries identifies the power-button LED—not the microphone LED—as the battery indicator.
“Any red light means the same battery percentage.”
Incorrect. Older Arctis guidance places red at 19–10% and fast-blinking red at 9–1%, while Nova guidance places red at 5–0%. The family must be identified first.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors“A color changed after plugging in, so charging is confirmed.”
Not necessarily. The published color ranges describe battery level, not a universal charging animation. Confirm with a later software or OLED reading and a known-working source.
“All SteelSeries headsets use the same replacement cable.”
Incorrect. Listed newer models use USB-C, while older wireless models use Micro-USB. Connector type and cable capability both matter.
“The Arctis 7 reset hole applies to every model.”
It does not. Reset locations and hold times are model-specific; use the exact support article for your headset.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I know the battery level of my SteelSeries headset?
Read the power-button LED, not the microphone LED. Older Arctis and Nova models use different lower-level ranges, so identify the family first. For a percentage-style check, use the Engine gear tab, a compatible mobile app, or a supported gamehub/base-station OLED display.

Does a red or green light prove that charging is working?
No. The colors indicate a battery range, not a universal charging animation. Compare a software or OLED reading before and after a charging period. A higher reading is stronger evidence that the battery is actually gaining charge.
Which SteelSeries headsets use USB-C charging cables?
SteelSeries identifies the Arctis Nova line and Arctis 7+, 7P+, and 7X+ as USB-C models. Confirm the physical port and exact product page before buying; the family name alone is not a sufficient compatibility check.
Where can I get a replacement charger cable?
For listed newer models, use a compatible USB-A-to-USB-C cable. SteelSeries says it no longer sells cables for older wireless Micro-USB models, so choose a data-capable Micro-USB cable from a compatible seller. Test the cable and source before assuming the headset is defective.
Recommended Free Tools
Can I use a SteelSeries headset while it charges?
SteelSeries says wireless Arctis headsets can be used while charging. Nova 3 Wireless specifically supports simultaneous use and charging with its included USB-C cable, although console functionality can vary by platform.
How long does a Nova 3 Wireless charge take?
SteelSeries states that a full Nova 3 Wireless charge takes around three hours and that a 15-minute quick charge provides up to six hours of playtime. These figures apply to Nova 3 Wireless, not every Arctis or Nova model.
Where is the reset for an Arctis 7 that will not charge?
SteelSeries places the Arctis 7 reset pinhole beneath the left ear cushion on the microphone side and describes holding it for about one second. Do not apply that location or timing to another headset model.
The Bottom Line
Identify the exact headset first, then read the power-button LED with the matching Arctis or Nova chart. Confirm charging by comparing Engine, a supported app, or an OLED display over time—not by treating one color as proof. If the level does not rise, clean the port, test a compatible cable and known-working USB source, and use only the reset procedure written for that model.
