Choose the Nova 7X if Xbox support matters. SteelSeries’ comparison lists the original Nova 7X as compatible with PC, PlayStation 4/5, and Xbox, while the original Nova 7 and Nova 7P are listed for PC and PlayStation 4/5 but not Xbox. Between the non-X models, the practical distinction is the control you get: Nova 7 and 7X provide ChatMix for balancing game and chat volume; Nova 7P provides Sidetone for hearing your own voice. All three original models include Bluetooth and can mix Bluetooth audio with 2.4 GHz wireless audio.
This guide covers the original Nova 7 family launched in 2022. SteelSeries now also sells a Nova 7 Gen 2 family, whose advertised specifications should not be applied to original Nova 7, 7P, or 7X headsets.
At a glance: which Nova 7 should you buy?
| Model | Officially listed compatibility | Distinctive control | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Arctis Nova 7 | PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5; no Xbox listed | ChatMix | PC or PlayStation users who want to balance game and voice-chat volume |
| Arctis Nova 7P | PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5; no Xbox listed | Sidetone | PlayStation users who want to hear their own voice in the headset |
| Arctis Nova 7X | PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and Xbox | ChatMix | Players who need one headset for Xbox as well as PC or PlayStation |
The 7P is not a special PlayStation-only requirement: SteelSeries lists PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 support for all three original models. The 7X is the only model in this comparison with Xbox compatibility in the cited support table.

Xbox: select the Nova 7X
If an Xbox console is part of your setup, the Nova 7X is the relevant choice. The original Nova 7 and Nova 7P are not listed as Xbox-compatible by SteelSeries. This is a model-level difference, not merely a matter of which USB transmitter is included.

Buying an Xbox transmitter separately does not convert a Nova 7 or Nova 7P into a Nova 7X. SteelSeries’ transmitter support guidance says Xbox compatibility is built into the specific headset model and cannot be added with a different dongle. A headset that must work on Xbox should therefore be identified as a 7X before purchase.
PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5: all three are listed
For PlayStation 4 or PlayStation 5, the official comparison lists Nova 7, Nova 7P and Nova 7X. Choose between them for the control layout and for any other platform you expect to use, rather than assuming that “7P” is required for PlayStation.
PC: all three are listed
SteelSeries lists PC compatibility for all three original variants. The choice on PC is consequently driven by ChatMix versus Sidetone, whether you also use Xbox, and the availability of the correct transmitter if you are buying secondhand.

Families that share a headset between a PlayStation and an Xbox should treat the 7X as the only suitable model of these three. A Nova 7 or 7P can still be the sensible choice for a single-platform PC/PlayStation user, but buying one with the intention of adding Xbox later creates a hardware limitation that an accessory cannot solve. If your current console is PlayStation but an Xbox purchase is likely, the 7X avoids replacing the headset later.
ChatMix versus Sidetone: the control that changes your choice
ChatMix on Nova 7 and Nova 7X
ChatMix balances game audio against voice-chat audio. It is useful when you want to turn teammates up or down without changing the overall headset volume or opening a software mixer. Because both Nova 7 and Nova 7X have this control, Xbox users who want ChatMix should choose the 7X; the non-X Nova 7 offers the same control but not the listed Xbox support.
ChatMix is particularly relevant in multiplayer games where the game soundtrack, effects and team conversation compete for attention. It is a hardware control distinction, so selecting the correct model matters more than searching for a software setting after purchase. If a listing says Nova 7P but shows a control scheme associated with ChatMix, verify the exact model rather than assuming the listing is accurate.
Sidetone on Nova 7P
Sidetone feeds your own microphone signal back into the headset so you can hear yourself while speaking. It can make conversation feel more natural and helps prevent accidentally shouting, especially when the ear cushions isolate outside sound. The Nova 7P is the model in this three-way comparison identified with Sidetone control.
Recommended Free Tools
Sidetone and ChatMix solve different problems. Sidetone changes how much of your own voice you hear; it does not replace a game-versus-chat balance control. Conversely, ChatMix changes the relative game and chat levels; it is not a substitute for monitoring your microphone. The support comparison assigns ChatMix to Nova 7 and Nova 7X and Sidetone to Nova 7P. If you specifically need game/chat balancing, select a model with ChatMix; if hearing your own voice is the priority, select the 7P.
Bluetooth and 2.4 GHz audio on all three models
The original Nova 7 family supports Bluetooth as well as 2.4 GHz wireless through its dedicated transmitter. SteelSeries says the headset can maintain both connections at the same time, allowing game audio over 2.4 GHz while audio or a call arrives from a phone over Bluetooth. The two streams can be mixed in the headset.
What simultaneous connections are useful for
- Play a game from a PC or console through the 2.4 GHz transmitter while listening to music or a navigation prompt from a phone.
- Keep a phone connected for a call without disconnecting the headset from the gaming device.
- Adjust the relative levels of the two sources using the headset controls and the source devices’ own volume controls.
- Move between gaming and mobile audio without physically swapping the headset between devices.
This dual-connection feature is shared across Nova 7, Nova 7P and Nova 7X. It does not remove the need for the right 2.4 GHz transmitter: Bluetooth availability does not turn a missing or incorrect dongle into a compatible console connection.
The microphone limitation during a Bluetooth call
The microphone does not transmit your voice to both sources at once. When a Bluetooth call is active, the microphone serves that call. In practical terms, you can hear game audio and the call together, but your microphone is not simultaneously sending your voice to a game chat and the Bluetooth caller.

That limitation matters if you expect to remain in a console party while taking a phone call. You may continue hearing both audio sources, but the microphone path is assigned to the active Bluetooth call. Plan to resume game chat after the call rather than expecting one microphone stream to serve both conversations at the same time.
Transmitter and replacement-dongle rules
Each original model uses its own dedicated wireless transmitter. SteelSeries lists separate Nova 7, Nova 7P and Nova 7X transmitters and states that a headset requires the transmitter intended for that model. A generic Nova transmitter, or a transmitter from another Nova 7 variant, should not be treated as an interchangeable replacement.
If you are buying a used headset
- Read the model marking on the headset itself: Nova 7, Nova 7P or Nova 7X.
- Confirm that the listing includes the matching transmitter, or budget for the transmitter made for that exact model.
- Check the platform you need. A missing 7X transmitter is an accessory problem; a non-X headset is not made Xbox-compatible by purchasing an X transmitter.
- Ask the seller to identify the transmitter model rather than relying on a photograph that only shows a USB plug.
- Confirm that the seller is not describing a Gen 2 product as an original model or mixing photographs from different generations.
This check matters because a headset and transmitter can look similar across the family while still having different platform support. Bluetooth may continue to work with a phone even when the 2.4 GHz transmitter is missing, but that does not restore console compatibility through the wireless link.
Replacing a lost transmitter
Replacement is reasonable when the headset itself is the correct model and only its transmitter is missing. Order or identify a Nova 7, Nova 7P or Nova 7X transmitter that matches the label on the headset. Do not choose solely by the word “Nova” or by the connector shape. If the headset is a non-X model and Xbox is now required, replacement of the headset is the relevant upgrade; an X transmitter is not a conversion kit.

Battery claims and the original-versus-Gen 2 distinction
In its August 23, 2022 launch announcement, SteelSeries advertised up to 38 hours of battery life for the original Nova 7 family and said a 15-minute fast charge provides six hours of use. These are manufacturer claims, not independent test measurements. Actual runtime can vary with volume, wireless mode, Bluetooth use, microphone use and battery condition.
| Family | Advertised battery information | Evidence qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Original Nova 7 / 7P / 7X | 38 hours; six hours after a 15-minute charge | SteelSeries launch claims dated August 23, 2022; no independent comparative result established |
| Nova 7 Gen 2 family | 50+ hours; mobile-app control is advertised | Current SteelSeries product-page claims accessed in 2026; these figures do not describe original models |
Retail listings can mix the generations in titles, photographs or specification fields. Verify whether a listing says “Gen 2” before using the 50-plus-hour figure. Do not assume that a Nova 7, Nova 7P or Nova 7X sold as the original 2022 version has the newer battery claim.
The 38-hour and six-hour fast-charge numbers apply to the family announcement, not to an independently measured winner among the three variants. There is no established basis here for saying that Nova 7, 7P or 7X lasts longer than the others. Use battery claims to distinguish generations, not to rank the original models.
How to set up the headset for each connection
Using 2.4 GHz wireless
- Identify the headset variant and use the transmitter intended for that exact model.
- Connect the transmitter to a compatible USB port on the PC or console.
- In the device’s audio settings, select the Nova headset for game or system output and for microphone input when you want to use voice chat.
- Start a game or chat session and adjust the headset’s volume. On Nova 7 or 7X, use ChatMix when you need to change the game-to-chat balance; on Nova 7P, use Sidetone when you want to adjust how much of your own voice you hear.
Menu names differ between Windows, PlayStation system software and Xbox. The important compatibility check is the model and its matching transmitter, not a software toggle that can add Xbox support to another variant.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Adding a phone over Bluetooth
- Activate Bluetooth pairing on the headset using its Bluetooth control, following the model’s supplied instructions for the pairing gesture.
- Open the phone’s Bluetooth settings and select the Nova 7-series headset when it appears.
- Leave the 2.4 GHz transmitter connected to the gaming device if you want both sources available.
- Play audio from the phone and the game to confirm that both streams are present, then set each source’s volume to a comfortable level.
When a Bluetooth call arrives, remember that the microphone is assigned to that call rather than being sent to both the phone and game chat simultaneously.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
“I bought a 7P because I have a PlayStation.”
The 7P will work with PlayStation, but so will the original Nova 7 and Nova 7X according to SteelSeries’ comparison. Choose the 7P when Sidetone is the feature you want, not because PlayStation requires it.
“An X transmitter will make my Nova 7 work on Xbox.”
It will not. Xbox compatibility is built into the headset model. Replace a lost transmitter with the exact model-specific part, but replace the headset itself with a 7X if Xbox support is required.

“ChatMix is missing from my 7P.”
That is the stated control difference: Nova 7P uses Sidetone, while Nova 7 and Nova 7X use ChatMix. Confirm the model before troubleshooting software or assuming the control is defective.
“The battery lasts less than the number on the box.”
The 38-hour figure is an advertised maximum-style claim from the 2022 launch, not an independent guarantee under every usage pattern. Bluetooth, microphone use, volume and battery age can change runtime. Also verify that you are not comparing an original headset with a Gen 2 listing that advertises 50-plus hours.
“All Nova 7 dongles should work because they use USB.”
A common connector does not establish model interchangeability. SteelSeries identifies dedicated transmitters for the three original variants. Match the transmitter name to the headset name before buying a replacement or accepting a secondhand bundle.
“Bluetooth means I can use any console without the transmitter.”
Bluetooth is a shared feature, but the cited console compatibility is based on the model and its 2.4 GHz wireless transmitter. Bluetooth pairing with a phone does not add Xbox support to a Nova 7 or Nova 7P, and it does not replace the intended console connection.
A practical decision framework
Choose Nova 7X when platform flexibility comes first
Select Nova 7X if you own an Xbox now, may add one later, or want one original Nova 7-family headset for Xbox, PlayStation and PC. You retain the ChatMix control that the standard Nova 7 has, while adding the platform compatibility the other two lack.
Choose Nova 7 when you use PC and PlayStation and want ChatMix
The original Nova 7 is the straightforward choice for PC and PlayStation users who do not need Xbox and prefer game/chat balancing. Its listed platform support excludes Xbox, so do not choose it for a mixed Xbox setup.
Choose Nova 7P when Sidetone matters more than ChatMix
Choose Nova 7P if hearing your own voice is the deciding feature and your listed platforms are PC and PlayStation. It is not the only PlayStation-compatible option, and it is not listed as Xbox-compatible.
Use a four-question check before ordering
- Will this headset need to work with Xbox? If yes, choose Nova 7X.
- Do you want game/chat balancing or microphone monitoring? Choose ChatMix on Nova 7/7X or Sidetone on Nova 7P.
- Is the listing for the original family or Gen 2? Match battery and app claims to the stated generation.
- Does the box include the transmitter for the exact model? If not, identify the correct replacement before assuming the deal is complete.
This sequence prevents the most expensive mistakes: buying a non-X headset for Xbox, paying for the wrong control layout, treating a Gen 2 specification as an original one, or discovering that a used headset has no matching transmitter.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What is and is not established about these models
The distinctions above come from SteelSeries’ support comparison, transmitter guidance, product information and the August 2022 launch announcement. The available material does not establish independent battery testing, a controlled sound-quality ranking, regional price or inventory, or whether every retailer’s SKU description is accurate. Treat retailer specifications as something to verify, especially when a listing combines original and Gen 2 terminology.
No price, stock status or regional SKU difference is established here, so a recommendation should not be based on an assumed discount or advertised bundle. Compare the exact model name, generation and included transmitter in the listing you are considering.
For a purchase decision, confirm four items in this order: the console platforms you need, ChatMix versus Sidetone, the generation, and the transmitter included or required. Those checks resolve the meaningful differences among the original Nova 7, Nova 7P and Nova 7X without assuming that a replacement accessory can change a headset’s built-in platform support.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which SteelSeries Nova 7 model works with Xbox?
The original Nova 7X is the only one of these three that SteelSeries lists as Xbox-compatible. Nova 7 and Nova 7P are listed for PC and PlayStation 4/5, not Xbox.
Is Nova 7P required for PS5 or PS4?
No. SteelSeries lists the original Nova 7, Nova 7P and Nova 7X as compatible with PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5. The 7P’s distinction is Sidetone control, not exclusive PlayStation support.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →What is the difference between ChatMix and Sidetone?
ChatMix balances game audio against voice-chat audio and is assigned to Nova 7 and Nova 7X. Sidetone feeds your own microphone signal back to you and is assigned to Nova 7P.
Can I use Bluetooth and 2.4 GHz at the same time?
Yes. All three original models support simultaneous Bluetooth and 2.4 GHz connections, so game audio can come through the transmitter while phone audio or a call is mixed in.
Can the microphone talk to game chat and a Bluetooth caller simultaneously?
No. When a Bluetooth call is active, the microphone serves that call rather than transmitting to both sources at once.
Can a Nova 7X dongle make a Nova 7 work on Xbox?
No. SteelSeries says Xbox compatibility is built into the specific headset model. An X transmitter cannot add Xbox support to a Nova 7 or Nova 7P.
Which transmitter should I buy as a replacement?
Buy the transmitter made for the exact headset variant: Nova 7, Nova 7P or Nova 7X. The family uses model-specific transmitters, so do not rely only on the USB connector’s appearance.
How long does the original Nova 7 battery last?
SteelSeries advertised 38 hours for the original family and six hours of use after a 15-minute charge in its August 23, 2022 announcement. Those are manufacturer claims, not independent measurements.
Is the Nova 7 Gen 2 battery claim the same as the original?
No. SteelSeries’ current Gen 2 page advertises 50-plus hours and mobile-app control. Those claims should not be applied to original Nova 7, Nova 7P or Nova 7X units.
Which model is best for a PC and PlayStation user?
Choose Nova 7 if you want ChatMix, or Nova 7P if hearing your own voice through Sidetone is more important. Choose Nova 7X instead if Xbox may be part of your setup.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Nova 7X is the only original model listed for Xbox. Nova 7 and Nova 7X provide ChatMix, while Nova 7P provides Sidetone. All three support PC, PlayStation 4/5, Bluetooth and simultaneous 2.4 GHz plus Bluetooth audio. Match any replacement transmitter to the exact model, and keep the original family’s 38-hour claim separate from the newer Gen 2 family’s 50-plus-hour claim.
