If a SteamVR firmware update is still running, let it finish—do not unplug Vive components or interrupt the process. If an HTC Vive update has failed, Valve’s documented recovery is to remove SteamVR’s USB devices, then reconnect the Link Box and restart SteamVR. For Valve Index, follow the Index-specific connection and restart checks instead; Valve directs users to Steam Support if blinking red LEDs persist.

First identify what “won’t update” means

A headset that appears stuck during an update needs a different response from one that reports “Firmware update failed” or one that completed an update but is now missing from SteamVR. Record the exact message and the headset model before changing connections. The official recovery path described for a failed firmware update is specifically for HTC Vive; it is not a universal SteamVR reset procedure.

What you see What to do first Model guidance
The update is still in progress Allow it to complete. Do not disconnect components or interrupt it. Valve’s warning specifically names Vive components.
SteamVR reports “Firmware update failed” Use the USB-device removal sequence below if the headset is an HTC Vive. Do not apply that sequence to Index by analogy.
The update ended, but SteamVR says the headset is unavailable or not detected Check power, USB, display, and device connections; then use the relevant model’s support steps. Vive and Index have different documented guidance.

There is no single recovery sequence established here for every headset, SteamVR version, or firmware failure. In particular, the available Index guidance does not describe a manual firmware-recovery procedure. Keep troubleshooting within the steps documented for your model.

Before changing anything, capture the current state

Write down the headset model, the exact wording of the SteamVR message, and whether SteamVR still sees the headset over USB or sees its display. Note the headset LED pattern and whether the update is visibly progressing, has failed, or has finished. This takes less than a minute and prevents a later support report from becoming a list of guesses.

Also note which step was last completed successfully. For example, “the update reached the failure message,” “the headset disappeared after relaunching SteamVR,” or “the Link Box was reconnected but no USB device appeared.” Those distinctions help separate a firmware failure from a connection failure. Avoid changing several cables, drivers, and settings at once; if the symptom changes, you need to know which reversible step caused it.

If the firmware update is still running, do not interrupt it

Valve’s support guidance says pending firmware updates should be allowed to complete and warns against unplugging Vive components or interrupting an update in progress. That means a slow-looking update is not, on its own, a reason to pull the USB cable, disconnect the Link Box, or power-cycle the headset mid-process.

Wait for SteamVR to report that the update has finished or failed before moving to recovery steps. If the process does report failure, note the displayed error and the headset’s LED state. Do not infer that an update is frozen solely because you want to move on to a different troubleshooting step; the documented advice is to let it complete.

Do not launch the Vive USB-removal procedure while the firmware operation is active. That procedure is intended for a reported failed update and requires the Link Box USB cable to be disconnected. Using it early would itself interrupt the connection that Valve says must remain in place while the update runs.

For a failed HTC Vive update: remove SteamVR USB devices

Valve’s documented firmware-failure flow for Vive resets SteamVR’s USB-device setup. Follow the sequence in order: unplug the Link Box cables from the PC before asking SteamVR to remove its USB devices, confirm that the Link Box USB cable remains disconnected when prompted, then reconnect the Link Box only after the removal operation finishes.

  1. Disconnect the Link Box from the PC. Unplug all Link Box cables from the computer. The Link Box USB cable must be disconnected for the removal step.
  2. Open SteamVR’s Developer settings. In SteamVR, go to Settings > Developer. If Developer settings are not visible, enable Developer Settings first.
  3. Remove the SteamVR USB devices. Select Remove all SteamVR USB Devices. When asked, verify that the Link Box USB cable is unplugged and confirm.
  4. Wait for the operation to finish. Do not reconnect the Link Box USB cable while SteamVR is carrying out the removal.
  5. Quit SteamVR. After the operation completes, exit SteamVR before reconnecting the Link Box.
  6. Reconnect and relaunch. Reconnect the Link Box’s USB, HDMI, and power connections, then launch SteamVR again and check whether it detects the headset.

Reconnect all three named Link Box connections—USB, HDMI, and power—rather than testing only one cable. The purpose is to restore the complete connection path after SteamVR’s old USB-device entries have been removed. Once SteamVR relaunches, check both the headset status and the original update message; a headset that is detected again is not necessarily evidence that a firmware update completed, so verify the status shown by SteamVR.

This procedure changes SteamVR’s USB-device setup; it is not a way to interrupt an active firmware update or a firmware file installer. Use it for the documented failed-update situation, not preemptively while an update is underway.

If SteamVR still has a general problem

When the headset is not detected or SteamVR behaves incorrectly after the model-specific steps, Valve’s general troubleshooting guidance includes checking SteamVR’s tool files, graphics drivers, SteamVR itself, Room Setup, and Windows. These steps address broader SteamVR or PC problems; they do not replace the Vive failed-update sequence.

  1. Validate SteamVR’s tool files. In the Steam Library, right-click SteamVR, open Properties > Local Files, and choose the option to verify the integrity of the tool files.
  2. Check graphics drivers. Make sure the PC’s graphics drivers are current. This is also among Valve’s recommended checks for Index problems.
  3. Restart SteamVR. Quit and reopen SteamVR, then see whether the headset status changes.
  4. Rerun Room Setup. If the problem remains, run SteamVR’s Room Setup again.
  5. Restart Windows. Reboot the computer and check SteamVR again after it starts.

Run these in a controlled order and check the headset after each major change. Verifying files addresses a damaged or incomplete SteamVR tool installation; a driver check addresses the graphics path; Room Setup addresses SteamVR’s environment configuration. None of these steps should be presented as a firmware rewrite, and none substitutes for contacting support when a model-specific firmware symptom persists.

These checks are useful when the issue may involve SteamVR or the PC rather than firmware itself. If SteamVR continues to show an update failure or the headset remains unavailable, preserve the exact error and move to the headset-specific steps or support route rather than repeatedly changing unrelated settings.

For Vive detection or USB problems

If the Vive update has ended but the headset is not detected, or if SteamVR appears to have a USB connection problem, Valve’s Vive troubleshooting steps focus on restarting the headset and checking the Link Box and USB connection. Try the simpler reversible checks before considering different hardware.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Reboot the headset from SteamVR. Use the headset’s icon in SteamVR to restart it.
  2. Power-cycle the Link Box from the PC side. Disconnect and restore its connection as part of the troubleshooting check; do not do this during an active firmware update.
  3. Try another USB port. A different port can help identify a port or USB-connection issue.
  4. Restart the computer. If the headset is still not detected, reboot Windows and check again.

These checks target the USB and Link Box path, not the firmware payload. A headset that reappears after a different USB port points toward detection or chipset behavior; it does not prove that the earlier update failed or succeeded. Keep the original error text so you can tell support exactly what changed.

Valve names the Inateck KTU3FR-2O2I two-port USB 3.0 PCIe card as something that may help with some persistent Vive USB-chipset problems. This is a narrow optional consideration after trying another USB port and the documented reset steps—not a firmware updater, a standard fix for a failed update, or a guaranteed compatibility solution. Check current availability and compatibility with your PC before buying; the support guidance does not establish current stock or price.

For Valve Index: check connections and escalate firmware symptoms

Index troubleshooting is not the same as Vive troubleshooting. Valve’s Index FAQ points users to check the headset’s power, USB, DisplayPort, PC, and headset cable or tether connections; check graphics drivers when needed; and restart the headset or SteamVR. Work through those connections before concluding that the firmware itself is the cause.

  • Confirm the headset’s power connection.
  • Check the USB and DisplayPort connections.
  • Check the PC and the headset cable or tether for a connection problem.
  • Update graphics drivers if needed.
  • Restart the headset or SteamVR.

Check the connection layers separately. Power is required for the headset to start; USB affects device communication; DisplayPort carries the display path; and the tether connects the headset to the PC. A headset may therefore be powered while still unavailable to SteamVR if its USB, DisplayPort, or tether connection is not established.

Valve says persistent blinking red LEDs may indicate a headset firmware issue and directs Index owners to contact Steam Support. The FAQ does not provide an Index firmware recovery sequence. Do not use the Vive instruction to remove all SteamVR USB devices as a substitute for Index support guidance.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Interrupting a merely slow update. A progress delay is not the same as a failure message. Leave Vive components connected until SteamVR reports completion or failure.
  • Reconnecting the Link Box too early. During the Vive USB-device removal operation, keep the Link Box USB cable disconnected and wait for completion.
  • Mixing model procedures. The Vive reset is documented for HTC Vive. Index guidance emphasizes connections, drivers, restarts, and Steam Support for persistent red blinking.
  • Buying hardware first. Try another USB port and the documented reset before considering the optional Inateck card. It is not a universal remedy.
  • Reporting only “it won’t update.” Include the exact error, LED state, model, last completed step, and whether USB or display detection works.

When and how to contact Steam Support

Escalate if an Index continues to show blinking red LEDs after the connection and restart checks, or if the relevant model’s documented steps do not restore detection. A concise report helps support understand where the process failed. Gather these details before submitting a hardware request:

  • The headset model.
  • The exact SteamVR error text, including whether it says the firmware update failed or the headset is not detected.
  • The headset’s LED state, including whether it is blinking red.
  • The last troubleshooting step completed and its result.
  • Whether SteamVR detects the headset over USB or detects its display connection.

Valve’s Index support flow asks for a SteamVR system report when submitting a hardware request. Include it when the support form requests it. Do not claim a firmware recovery succeeded or keep repeating a reset when the headset remains unavailable; report what the device does and let Steam Support guide the next model-specific step.

Choose the next step by symptom, not by guesswork

The practical distinction is whether the firmware process is active, has failed, or has ended with a detection problem. An active update calls for patience; a failed Vive update has a documented USB reset; a detection issue calls for connection and general SteamVR checks; and suspected Index firmware trouble calls for Steam Support.

Situation Appropriate next action Avoid
Update still progressing Wait for completion. Unplugging Vive components or interrupting the update.
Failed HTC Vive update Follow the exact SteamVR USB-device removal and Link Box reconnect sequence. Reconnecting USB before the removal finishes.
Vive not detected after update Check headset restart, Link Box, USB port, SteamVR files, and Windows restart. Treating an optional USB card as a firmware recovery tool.
Index with persistent blinking red LEDs Use Index connection checks and contact Steam Support. Applying the Vive recovery sequence as though it were an Index procedure.

Frequently Asked Questions

What should I do if my Vive firmware update looks stuck?

Leave the Vive components connected and let SteamVR finish. Valve warns not to unplug components or interrupt an update that is in progress. Use recovery steps only after SteamVR reports failure.

How do I fix “Firmware update failed” on an HTC Vive?

Disconnect the Link Box cables from the PC, open SteamVR Settings > Developer, choose Remove all SteamVR USB Devices, confirm that the Link Box USB cable is unplugged, and wait for removal to finish. Quit SteamVR, reconnect USB, HDMI, and power, then relaunch SteamVR.

Can I use the Vive USB reset on a Valve Index?

Do not assume so. Valve’s Index guidance calls for checking power, USB, DisplayPort, PC, and tether connections, updating graphics drivers when needed, and restarting the headset or SteamVR. Persistent blinking red LEDs should be taken to Steam Support.

What does a headset not detected after an update mean?

It can be a USB, Link Box, DisplayPort, power, tether, graphics-driver, SteamVR, or Windows issue rather than a confirmed firmware failure. Record the exact message and work through the connection and general SteamVR checks for your model.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is the Inateck KTU3FR-2O2I card required for Vive updates?

No. Valve mentions it only as an optional possibility for some persistent Vive USB-chipset detection problems. Try another USB port and the documented reset first, and verify current compatibility before buying.

What information should I send Steam Support?

Provide the headset model, exact SteamVR error, LED state, last completed troubleshooting step, and whether USB or display detection works. Valve’s Index hardware flow also asks for a SteamVR system report when the form requests one.

The Bottom Line

Do not interrupt an update that is still running. For a failed HTC Vive update, follow Valve’s exact SteamVR USB-device removal and Link Box reconnect sequence. For a Valve Index, check every connection and restart path, and contact Steam Support if blinking red LEDs persist. Keep the model, error text, LED state, and detection results together so the next step is based on the symptom rather than guesswork.
