Valve’s SteamOS 3.9.3 Beta is now available through the Beta and Preview update channels, with its headline change being “Improved support for Steam Frame wireless adapter.” The build also brings a Linux 7.2 kernel rebase and fixes for Steam Machine streaming, graphics, audio hot-plugging and several games. It is a test-channel release, not a stable-channel rollout.
What SteamOS 3.9.3 Beta changes
Improved Steam Frame wireless-adapter support
Valve lists improved support for the Steam Frame wireless adapter as a general change in the SteamOS 3.9.3 Beta release notes. The wording confirms software work for the adapter, but it does not provide a latency, throughput or reliability measurement. No performance figures should be inferred from the update.
Better Steam Machine-to-Steam Frame streaming behavior
The broader SteamOS 3.9 branch fixes a frame-limiter problem in which limits could be applied incorrectly to VR titles while streaming from Steam Machine to Steam Frame. That fix connects the adapter work to the complete host-to-headset streaming path rather than treating the dongle as an isolated peripheral.

- Improved resume performance for STAR WARS: Galactic Racer on Steam Machine.
- Resolved a GPU-error issue in The Crew Motorfest.
- Addressed audio behavior when a monitor is hot-plugged.
- Included security and stability fixes.
- Reintroduced Android binder IPC support.
Does SteamOS 3.9.3 fully support the Steam Frame adapter on Linux?
Not yet in the same sense as Windows. Valve’s Steam Frame support guide states: “Full support for SteamVR and Steam Frame streaming via the wireless adapter are currently available on Windows only.” For Linux-PC users, Valve says that once Steam Frame ships, the wireless dongle will require either SteamOS 3.9 or newer, or a Linux kernel version 7.2 or newer.

That makes SteamOS 3.9.3 a relevant compatibility step for Linux users, but the Beta release should not be described as proof that every Linux streaming workflow is already fully supported. Windows remains the platform Valve documents for full adapter-based SteamVR and Steam Frame streaming at this stage.

How to switch to SteamOS 3.9.3 Beta
- Open Settings on the SteamOS device.
- Select System.
- Open System Update Channel.
- Choose the available Beta or Preview channel.
- Return to the system-update screen and check for updates, then install SteamOS 3.9.3 if it is offered.
Because these channels contain software still under test, install the update only on hardware and a game library you can afford to troubleshoot. Keep important saves synchronized or backed up before changing channels, and expect that a later update may alter behavior.

What this release does not establish
Valve’s notes do not state a retail price, stock status or verified retailer listing for the wireless adapter. They also do not publish numeric latency, bandwidth or reliability results for SteamOS 3.9.3. Those details must be checked separately when the hardware is available.

SteamOS 3.9.3 Beta is an important compatibility build for people following Steam Frame and Steam Machine streaming, especially on Linux. Its practical requirements are clear: SteamOS 3.9 or Linux kernel 7.2 or newer for the Linux path, while Valve still identifies Windows as the only platform with full documented adapter streaming support. For everyone else, the Beta and Preview channel status is the main reason to wait for a stable release.
