SteamLite is a Windows utility described as a DLL that controls Steam’s Chromium Embedded Framework (CEF) and offers lightweight launch options. But the reviewed project documentation does not publish measurements or a benchmark method supporting a 96% RAM reduction. Treat that percentage as an unverified claim, not an established result.
What SteamLite does
The project describes SteamLite as “A tiny program to condense Steam’s resource usage by controlling its CEF (Chromium Embedded Framework) and offering lightweight launch options.” The README says the utility loads as a DLL from the Steam installation directory. Its settings are stored in SteamLite.ini in the Steam root folder.
SteamLite is intended to change how Steam’s embedded browser component behaves and to provide launch options. The README does not establish that those changes will produce a particular memory saving on every system.

The reviewed README does not state a 96% reduction or provide RAM measurements, baseline conditions, a tested Steam or Windows version, hardware details, sample size, or a reproducible benchmark. The project documentation therefore does not substantiate the headline figure. That is a limit of the documentation reviewed; it does not prove that no separate test exists.

Steam Support explains that when a computer runs short of memory, the operating system may move some RAM contents to slower disk-based storage. This is general context about memory pressure, not evidence that SteamLite reduces memory use by 96% or improves game performance. Steam Support: Steam Overlay performance monitor FAQ.
SteamLite’s documented CEF modes and launch options
The README lists three CEF modes. It does not spell out which individual Steam screens or features remain available with CEF disabled, so do not assume every browser-dependent feature will work in that mode.

The project also lists launch minimized, no joystick, and no GPU for CEF. It does not publish comparative memory results for these options, so their presence should not be taken as proof of a specific RAM saving.

The following steps reflect the project README’s instructions; they have not been independently tested here. Check the current release notes and Steam compatibility before using the utility, since both can change.
- Download the latest release from the SteamLite GitHub Releases page.
- Place
user32.dllin the folder that containssteam.exe. - Start Steam and configure the desired CEF and launch options.
- Close Steam. The README says saving options creates or updates a desktop shortcut that launches Steam with those options.
- Use the SteamLite desktop shortcut to launch Steam with the selected configuration.
The project’s README also identifies GCC in an MSYS2 environment as its build setup and credits AveYo’s steam_min.bat for shortcut-creation commands. These details describe the project, not a guarantee of compatibility with a particular Steam client release.
Resetting or removing SteamLite
- Reset settings: Close Steam and delete
SteamLite.inifrom the Steam root directory, as the README’s reset note instructs. - Remove the utility: Delete
user32.dllfrom the Steam installation directory, following the README’s uninstall instruction.
If Steam does not behave as expected after changing configuration, close it before resetting or removing the files. The README does not provide a broader recovery procedure or compatibility troubleshooting guide.

- Look for measurements that identify the Steam and Windows versions, hardware, test conditions, and baseline.
- Distinguish a change in Steam’s reported memory use from an improvement in game performance; one does not establish the other.
- Confirm the current release and compatibility information on the project page before installing a DLL in Steam’s folder.
