There is no universally safe or best steamer for laminate floors. Whether steam is suitable depends on the exact flooring product and its care and warranty instructions—not just the steamer’s claim that it works on laminate. Check the floor manufacturer’s current guidance first. If it does not expressly allow steam, use its approved dry or damp cleaning method instead.
Can you use a steam mop on laminate?
Only when the instructions for your specific laminate product allow it. Manufacturers do not give one rule for all laminate: Shaw says steam cleaning is not recommended for its laminate, EGGER allows it only for Aqua+ laminate, and Pergo’s guidance distinguishes between general laminate care and certain products with a wet warranty.
That distinction matters because steam-mop makers’ compatibility claims do not establish what your floor’s manufacturer permits. Shark says its steam mops can be used on sealed laminate, but also advises customers to check the flooring manufacturer’s instructions. Follow the floor maker’s guidance for your product and warranty.
Why steam can damage laminate
Laminate has joints and layers that can be vulnerable to moisture. Pergo warns that moisture can be forced into joints and between layers, potentially causing fading, discoloration, swelling, curling, or separation. Shaw also warns that steam may damage its floors, sometimes irreparably.
#1 Best Overall
- CLEANS & RESTORES SHINE: Pro formula removes stains & scuffs while maintaining a shine
- FAST DRYING: Formula is fast drying and does NOT require rinsing. Spray and wipe surface with dry mop or towel
- For use on: varnish, acrylic and polyurethane-finished wood and laminate floors, baseboards, cabinet doors and crown molding
- Not for use on: tile or floors with grout, oil finished wood floors and floors that require waxing
- FORMULA CAN BE USED WITH MOST REFILLABLE SPRAY MOPS
A surface looking dry after steaming does not establish that steam was permitted or that moisture did not reach the joints. The floor’s own care and warranty documents are the relevant authority.
What the manufacturers say
| Flooring guidance | Steam position | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Shaw | Shaw’s technical bulletin says steam is not recommended for its laminate. The bulletin was revised April 21, 2020. | Do not steam Shaw laminate; use Shaw’s approved care method. |
| EGGER | Steam is permitted only for EGGER Aqua+ laminate; EGGER does not recommend it for its other laminate. | If the floor is Aqua+, keep the cleaner moving. Otherwise, do not steam. |
| Pergo | Pergo generally recommends vacuuming and damp mopping. A separate maintenance leaflet permits steam for specified 15-year wet-warranty laminate under conditions. | Confirm that your exact product is covered by the leaflet, then follow its steam instructions. |
| Floor & Decor | Retailer guidance conditionally allows low-setting steam on waterproof or water-resistant laminate installed in residential areas. | Check the product warranty and installation guide; this retailer guidance is not a universal laminate rule. |
These instructions apply to the products and contexts each source describes; they do not combine into a general permission for laminate floors. Pergo’s FAQ says, “It is better to vacuum and damp mop wood, laminate and vinyl floors.”

If your floor explicitly allows steam
Use the exact conditions specified in the floor’s current maintenance instructions. Pergo’s cited leaflet describes steam use for specified 15-year wet-warranty laminate with a cloth covering the steam openings, low power, continuous movement along the plank length, and no lingering in one place. EGGER says to keep a steam cleaner moving on Aqua+.
Before using a steamer, verify that your floor is the named eligible product and that the applicable warranty and care instructions are current. Then check that the steamer can meet those instructions, including any low-setting, cloth or pad, and movement requirements. If you cannot confirm permission or meet the conditions, do not steam.
