Use Steam Wishlist for games you may buy and want sale or release alerts for. Use Follow when you want news published by a game’s developer. They are not competing versions of the same alert: Wishlist is tied to purchase interest, while Follow is tied to developer updates. You can use both on the same game.
Steam Support specifically recommends Wishlist as the way to avoid missing sales on games you want. Steam’s current notification page says Wishlist alerts can arrive by email or through the Steam mobile app for listed deal formats such as Daily Deals, Midweek Deals and Weekend Deals. Follow is described in Steam Community developer announcements as the control for notifications about that developer’s Steam news.
Wishlist and Follow answer different questions
The quickest decision is to ask what you want to hear about:
| Your goal | Use | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Know when a game you might purchase is discounted | Wishlist | Steam Support identifies Wishlist as the route for sale notifications. |
| Know when a wishlisted game is released | Wishlist | Steam’s Discovery Update says release notifications are sent by default for wishlisted items. |
| Receive news posted by the developer | Follow | A Steam Community developer announcement explains Follow as the way to be notified when that developer publishes Steam news. |
| Limit interruptions while keeping useful alerts | Curate Wishlist and notification preferences | Steam lets you remove titles and control email and mobile notification channels. |
There is no requirement to choose one. Wishlist a game for purchase-related alerts and follow its developer for announcements when both kinds of information matter.

What Steam Wishlist notifications currently cover
Steam’s current Wishlist Notifications page states: “We’ll let you know by email or through our mobile app when the games on your Wishlist are on sale as a Daily Deal, Midweek Deal or Weekend Deal.” Those are the examples Steam currently lists. The page does not establish a delivery time, an instant push guarantee, or that every possible discount format triggers a message.
Email and mobile are separate channels
The notification page names two delivery channels: email and the Steam mobile app. Steam’s Discovery Update 2.0 describes email as the default when a wishlisted item goes on sale or is released. Phone alerts require the Steam mobile app to be installed and its notifications enabled. Turning on one channel does not mean the other is enabled.
Sale alerts are not a price-monitoring promise
Wishlist alerts are designed to tell you that a qualifying sale or release has occurred. The official pages do not promise an alert for every price movement, a particular percentage discount, a specific currency threshold, or a particular number of minutes after a price changes. Treat the message as a prompt to check the store listing and the displayed price before buying.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →What the alert does not decide for you
A notification does not select the right edition, language, bundle or platform for your account. It also does not lock in a price. Open the store page from the message and review the current price, discount label, package contents and sale end information. If you share a family library, use multiple accounts or shop across regions, confirm that the alert belongs to the account and storefront you intend to use.
What Follow is for
Follow is associated with news from a developer rather than with a game’s price. A Steam Community announcement from a developer says to click Follow to be notified whenever that developer publishes news on Steam. That is a practical explanation of the feature, not an exhaustive Steam-wide specification of every game’s settings, notification frequency or delivery behavior.
Typical reasons to follow
- Track development updates, roadmaps or patch announcements.
- Hear about beta tests, events, downloadable content or other posts from the studio.
- Keep up with a developer’s broader catalog instead of watching only one store price.
- See launch information or post-release communication without adding every related title to your Wishlist.
Following a developer should not be treated as a substitute for Wishlisting a game you may buy. A developer-news post can mention a sale, but Follow is not documented as the purchase-intent alert route.
Why Wishlist is the better choice for sale alerts
Steam Support’s Steam Sales – Purchasing and billing FAQ answers “How can I avoid missing sales for the games that I want?” by pointing users to Wishlist. That direct support guidance is the clearest reason to Wishlist a game when your primary concern is price.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWishlist also keeps release interest in the same place. The Discovery Update says Steam sends a default email when a wishlisted item is released, so a game can remain useful on your list before launch and after release. You can then remove it if you no longer want purchase or release notices.
This makes Wishlist useful across a game’s lifecycle. Before launch, it can represent purchase intent and release interest. After launch, it can remain a shortlist for future discounts. If you bought the game, decided against it or only added it temporarily, removing it keeps later alerts from becoming background noise.

How to set up Wishlist alerts
- Open the game’s store page in a web browser or the Steam client.
- Select the Add to your Wishlist control on the store page.
- To review or edit the list, open your Wishlist in the client or in a browser and remove games that no longer represent an active interest.
- Keep email notifications enabled if you want the default email route described by Steam.
- For phone alerts, install the Steam mobile app and allow its notifications at the operating-system level and in the app.
- When an alert arrives, open the game page and verify the current deal, edition, currency and end date before purchasing.
Steam’s support material confirms that Wishlist items can be added from a store page and that the list can be edited in the client or a web browser. It does not provide a single permanent menu path for every notification setting, so labels can differ by client version, platform and account interface.
Build a useful Wishlist, not an archive
Add titles that represent a realistic future purchase, not every game you might investigate. A short list makes sale messages easier to recognize and gives you a clear reason to open each one. Revisit the list after a purchase, a canceled project or a change in taste. Removing a title is a curation decision; it is not a replacement for changing email or mobile preferences.

How to use Follow without confusing it with Wishlist
- Open the relevant developer’s Steam presence or a Steam Community announcement from that developer.
- Select the Follow control presented for the developer’s Steam news.
- Leave the game on your Wishlist separately if you also want sale or release interest tracked.
- Review the news feed or notification controls available to your account if updates become too frequent.
The documented purpose of Follow is to hear when the developer publishes Steam news. Steam’s cited developer announcement does not promise that every post will arrive through every channel or at a fixed interval.
Follow is therefore broader by subject but different in intent. One developer may publish news about several games, patches or events. Following can expose you to that wider stream, whereas Wishlisting a single title keeps the tracking focused on that game’s purchase and release status.
Current deal examples versus Valve’s older broad wording
A March 15, 2016 Valve blog post, Improvements To Wishlist E-mail Notifications, said: “If a game is on your Steam Wishlist, we’ll now send you an e-mail if any type of discount is applied on that game.” The post named several sale formats and developer-configured discounts at the time.
That historical statement is useful context, but it should not be silently treated as a current guarantee. The current Wishlist Notifications page uses narrower examples—Daily Deal, Midweek Deal and Weekend Deal. For a present-day decision, rely on the current page’s wording and regard the 2016 promise as a dated description of the system then.
The distinction matters when you are waiting for an unusual promotion, a bundle, a publisher event or a developer-configured offer. The safest approach is to check the store page directly rather than assume that an alert covers every possible price change.
Choosing one, the other or both
Choose Wishlist only when
- You are building a list of games you may purchase later.
- You mainly care about discounts, releases or both.
- You want to avoid following a developer’s entire news output.
- You prefer a title-by-title list that can be pruned as your priorities change.
Choose Follow only when
- You already own the games or are not waiting for a price drop.
- You care about the studio’s announcements more than store pricing.
- You want news across a developer’s games rather than one title.
- You are interested in development progress, events or updates even when no purchase is planned.
Use both when
- You are waiting for a discount and also want development news.
- A game is unreleased and you want a release alert plus developer updates.
- You want purchase alerts for one title while following the studio’s wider work.
- You want to separate a focused shopping list from a broader news feed.
Notification controls and reducing noise
Steam’s current notification page says users can opt out of email and turn off mobile notifications. The 2016 Valve post also directed users to email preferences to opt out of particular email categories or all email. The exact location and labels of those controls can change, so use the notification or email-preference controls shown in your account rather than relying on an old menu path.
Keep alerts useful
- Remove games from the Wishlist when you have bought them, lost interest or no longer need an alert.
- Use Wishlist for a deliberate purchase shortlist instead of adding every game you might someday investigate.
- Keep mobile notifications off if email is sufficient, or disable email if phone alerts are the channel you actually check.
- Follow only developers whose announcements you genuinely want to read.
- Change a channel preference before deleting a useful list entry simply because messages became inconvenient.
Steam does not publish a rule saying that removing a game from the Wishlist also unfollows its developer. Treat the two actions as separate controls and review each one independently.

Wishlist visibility is separate from notification delivery
Steam says a Wishlist’s visibility is tied to your Community Profile privacy settings. That controls who can see the list; it is not the same as whether Steam sends you email or mobile notifications. You can therefore review profile privacy and notification preferences as separate decisions. Making a Wishlist private does not, in the cited documentation, turn sale alerts on or off.
What to check when an alert does not appear
The game is not actually on the Wishlist
Open the store page or Wishlist and confirm that the title is still listed. Accidental removal, a different account or viewing the wrong regional store page can make a title appear untracked.
Email is going to the wrong place
Check the email address associated with your Steam account, spam or junk folders and any email-category opt-outs. The official documentation confirms that email can be disabled, so an absent message may reflect a preference rather than a sale failure.
Mobile alerts are disabled
For phone notifications, verify that the Steam mobile app is installed, signed in to the intended account and allowed to send notifications by the phone’s operating system. Steam’s Discovery Update specifically makes mobile-app installation and notification permission prerequisites for phone alerts.
The promotion is outside the current examples
The current page names Daily Deals, Midweek Deals and Weekend Deals. It does not say that every promotion, bundle, publisher event or price change generates an alert. Check the store page directly when you expect a discount that does not fit those listed examples.
Recommended Free Tools
You expected a developer-news message
Wishlist and Follow monitor different activity. A price change will not necessarily produce a Follow notification, and a developer post will not necessarily produce a Wishlist sale alert. Confirm that the relevant game is wishlisted and the developer is followed, rather than assuming one setting covers both.
You are checking the wrong channel
A phone alert requires the app and its permissions; an email alert requires the account’s email route to remain enabled. Check both independently. Steam’s documentation does not promise that enabling one channel automatically duplicates every message in the other.
Important limits of the documented features
- No stated delivery timing: Steam’s cited pages do not promise instant, push-only or guaranteed delivery.
- No universal discount guarantee: The current page lists examples rather than an explicit promise covering every discount type.
- No fixed Follow schedule: The developer explanation describes news notifications but does not define a universal frequency or channel policy.
- Regional and account differences may apply: Store presentation, app behavior and available controls can vary by client, platform and account settings.
- Prices still need checking: An alert does not confirm that a particular edition, currency, bundle or final checkout total is right for you.
- No claim of reliability testing: The cited pages describe intended features, not an independent test of delivery success or timing.
A practical decision workflow
- Define the alert: If the alert is about buying or a release, start with Wishlist. If it is about developer-published news, start with Follow.
- Set the channel: Keep the email default if that is where you reliably read messages. Add the Steam mobile app only if you want phone notifications and can keep its permissions enabled.
- Curate the source: Remove stale Wishlist entries and unfollow developers whose news no longer helps you.
- Verify the event: Open the Steam page after an alert and check the live price, edition and promotion details.
- Revisit preferences: If messages are too frequent, change email or mobile controls rather than deleting every useful Wishlist entry.
Examples
You are waiting for a discount on an unreleased game
Add the game to your Wishlist. That aligns with Steam’s documented sale and release notifications. Follow the developer as well if you want progress posts, launch details or other studio news.
You already own a developer’s games
Follow the developer if its Steam announcements are useful to you. Do not Wishlist every owned game merely to receive news; Wishlist is the purchase-and-release tracking tool.

You want fewer emails but still want sales
Keep a curated Wishlist and adjust email preferences or use the mobile channel if that better fits your routine. Steam documents controls to opt out of email and to turn off mobile notifications, so the solution is preference management rather than choosing Follow for prices.
You want a studio’s updates but only one possible purchase
Follow the studio for its news and Wishlist the one title you may buy. This combination avoids filling the Wishlist with games you already own or do not plan to purchase while preserving the developer’s broader announcements.

Does Following a developer send sale alerts?
Follow is documented as a way to hear when a developer publishes news on Steam. Steam Support points to Wishlist for sale alerts, so Wishlist is the appropriate setting when price notifications are the goal.
Does Wishlist send release notifications?
Yes, Steam’s Discovery Update says email is sent by default when a wishlisted item goes on sale or is released. The current notification page separately lists sale examples, so keep the release statement tied to that Discovery Update wording.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Will I get an alert for every Steam discount?
Do not assume that. The current Wishlist Notifications page names Daily Deals, Midweek Deals and Weekend Deals. Valve’s March 15, 2016 blog used broader “any type of discount” wording, but that is a dated description and not proof of identical current coverage.
Are Wishlist alerts push notifications?
Steam documents email and notifications through its mobile app. It does not promise instant delivery, push-only delivery or a particular response time. Mobile alerts also require the app and notification permissions.
Can I use Wishlist and Follow together?
Yes. They track different interests. Wishlist the game for sale or release interest and Follow the developer for Steam news when you want both.
Does making my Wishlist private stop alerts?
Steam ties Wishlist visibility to Community Profile privacy settings. Visibility and notification delivery are separate decisions in the documented feature descriptions, so review notification preferences independently.
How do I stop unwanted messages?
Remove stale games, unfollow developers whose posts no longer help, and use Steam’s email opt-out or mobile-notification controls. The available labels and locations can change, so follow the controls displayed in your account.

Why did a sale alert not arrive?
Confirm the game remains on the correct account’s Wishlist, check email preferences and spam folders, verify mobile-app permissions, and compare the promotion with the current page’s listed deal examples. The documentation does not guarantee every price change will produce a message.
Bottom line for most Steam users
Wishlist the games you may buy, and Follow the developers whose Steam news you want. Wishlist is Steam’s documented choice for sale alerts and also covers release interest; Follow is the better fit for developer announcements. Because the two features track different events, using both is often the most complete setup, while careful curation and channel controls keep the resulting notifications manageable.
