Neither method is universally best. U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidance published March 19, 2025 lists both boiling and steam as ways to sanitize infant feeding items after they have been cleaned. Boiling uses a five-minute boil; steam uses a compatible microwave container or plug-in system according to the equipment and bottle manufacturer’s instructions. The right choice depends on your baby’s health needs, the parts you use, and which method you can perform correctly every time.
A dishwasher can also remove the need for a separate sanitizing step when it uses hot water plus a heated-dry cycle or a sanitizing setting. In every case, cleaning after each feeding comes first.
The short answer: choose the method that fits your baby and your bottle parts
Boiling and steam are both recognized CDC sanitizing methods. Current guidance does not establish that one is faster, cheaper, safer, or more effective than the other. It also does not require a dedicated countertop sterilizer.
| Question | Boiling | Steam system | Qualifying dishwasher |
|---|---|---|---|
| What you do | Put disassembled, cleaned items in a pot, cover with water, bring to a boil, and boil for 5 minutes. | Put disassembled, cleaned items in a microwave steam container or plug-in steam system and follow the system and item instructions for sanitizing, cooling, and drying. | Clean items with hot water and use heated drying or a sanitizing setting; CDC says a separate sanitizing step is then unnecessary. |
| Equipment | Pot, water, heat source, and clean tongs. | Compatible microwave steam container or plug-in steam appliance. | Dishwasher and feeding parts approved for that dishwasher. |
| Main decision | Whether every part can tolerate boiling water and you can handle hot items safely. | Whether every part fits and is approved for that specific steam method. | Whether the dishwasher reaches the stated conditions and the parts are dishwasher-safe. |
| What the evidence does not show | No head-to-head CDC test establishes a winner for speed, cost, energy use, or measured germ reduction. | ||
If your baby is younger than 2 months, was born prematurely, or has a weakened immune system because of illness or medical treatment, daily sanitizing is particularly important. For an older, healthy baby, daily sanitizing may not be necessary when bottles and parts are carefully cleaned after every use.

Cleaning is required before either sanitizing method
Sanitizing is an additional step, not a substitute for washing. Milk residue and biofilm can remain on a nipple, valve, collar, or bottle seam if an item is only exposed to heat.
- Clean after every feeding. Take the bottle apart so water and detergent can reach every component.
- Clean the supporting tools. Wash the bottle brush and any basin used for bottle washing before you use them for sanitizing preparation.
- Rinse and inspect. Look through vents, threads, and valves for trapped milk, cloudiness, cracks, or damage.
- Sanitize only clean parts. Use boiling, steam, or a qualifying dishwasher cycle after washing is complete.
Follow the bottle, nipple, valve, and appliance instructions whenever they are more specific than a general procedure. A set may include parts made from different materials, so compatibility must be checked piece by piece.
How to sanitize baby bottles by boiling
Boiling is the CDC’s timed procedure and requires no dedicated appliance. It is a practical option when you have a suitable pot and your feeding equipment’s instructions allow exposure to boiling water.

What you need
- A clean pot large enough for all disassembled parts to remain fully covered.
- Clean water and a heat source.
- Clean tongs for removing hot items.
- A clean, unused towel or paper towel placed in a protected drying area.
Five-minute boiling procedure
- Clean first. Wash the bottles, nipples, rings, caps, valves, and other feeding items after the feeding. Clean the bottle brush and washing basin as well.
- Check compatibility. Read the current instructions for every component. Do not boil a part unless its manufacturer permits it.
- Disassemble completely. Separate pieces that normally touch or trap milk. Keep small parts together in a clean, manageable group so none is overlooked.
- Cover with water. Place the parts in the pot and make sure water covers them fully. Arrange them so they are not wedged together.
- Bring the water to a boil. Once the water is boiling, boil the items for 5 minutes. This is a CDC instruction, not a laboratory comparison or guarantee that every product can tolerate the heat.
- Remove with clean tongs. Avoid reaching into the pot with bare hands. Drain each piece without touching surfaces that could recontaminate it.
- Air-dry protected from dirt. Place parts on a clean, unused towel or paper towel in an area protected from dust and household contamination. Let them dry thoroughly. Do not rub or pat them dry with a dish towel.
- Store only when dry. Moisture left inside a nipple or valve can provide a place for residue to remain. Keep dry parts protected until the next use.
Boiling pitfalls and fixes
- A part warps, clouds, or becomes sticky: Stop boiling that component and check its instructions. Replace it if it is damaged or no longer seals correctly.
- Parts float above the water: Turn off the heat safely, reposition the pieces, and make sure all are submerged before restarting the timed boil.
- You cannot identify a small valve or membrane: Keep the set’s parts together during washing and consult the product instructions before applying heat.
- Items are handled with a damp or used towel: Put them back on a clean, protected surface and allow them to air-dry; do not wipe them dry.
How to sanitize baby bottles with steam
Steam sanitizing uses either a microwave steam container or a plug-in steam system. The method is not simply “put the bottles in and run heat.” The system’s instructions determine the water amount, loading pattern, cycle, cooling period, and drying or storage steps.
Steam procedure
- Clean every item. Wash feeding parts after the feeding and clean the brush and basin used for washing.
- Disassemble. Separate bottles, nipples, collars, caps, valves, and membranes. Steam must reach the surfaces that contact milk.
- Verify suitability. Confirm that each part is approved for the particular microwave container or plug-in unit. Also verify that the container’s dimensions and loading instructions accommodate the parts without forcing them into place.
- Add water exactly as directed. Use the quantity and type of water specified by the steam-system instructions. Too little water can interrupt the cycle; too much can change how the system vents or heats.
- Load for steam access. Position pieces as directed, with openings oriented so steam can reach interior surfaces. Do not close or stack components in a way the manufacturer forbids.
- Run the specified sanitizing cycle. Follow the system’s time, power setting, and cycle instructions rather than improvising a microwave setting.
- Respect the cooling period. Steam and the container remain hot after the cycle. Follow the stated wait time and open the unit in the manner described by the manufacturer to avoid burns.
- Dry or store as directed. If the instructions call for air-drying, use a clean, protected area and do not wipe parts with a dish towel. Keep the container closed only when its instructions say that storage inside is appropriate.
Steam-specific failure modes
- The lid will not close: Do not compress or modify the load. Remove incompatible or excess parts and check the model’s capacity instructions.
- A part is not labeled for steam or microwave use: Set it aside and use the method permitted by its manufacturer. Compatibility with boiling does not automatically establish compatibility with microwave steam, and the reverse is also true.
- Water remains inside a valve: Follow the unit’s cooling and draining instructions, then allow the part to dry fully before assembly.
- Steam escapes unexpectedly: Stop the cycle if it is safe to do so, let the unit cool, and inspect the seal, lid, water level, and loading arrangement against the manufacturer’s instructions.
When a dishwasher is enough
CDC guidance provides a third route. If infant feeding items are cleaned in a dishwasher using hot water and either a heated-drying cycle or a sanitizing setting, a separate sanitizing step is not necessary.
Dishwasher checklist
- Confirm that each bottle and component is dishwasher-safe.
- Disassemble parts so spray reaches threads, valves, and interiors.
- Place small pieces in a closed basket or other holder approved for the dishwasher, if the item instructions call for one.
- Select the cycle that provides hot water and heated drying or the appliance’s sanitizing setting.
- When the cycle ends, inspect parts for trapped water, residue, cracks, or deformation before the next feeding.
A normal cool-water cycle or an unheated drying cycle does not meet the specific condition described above. If your dishwasher cannot provide hot water plus heated drying or sanitizing, use an approved boiling or steam procedure instead.

How often should you sanitize?
The frequency decision starts with the baby, not the appliance. CDC says to clean bottles after every feeding. It recommends daily sanitizing, or more often, for extra germ removal and identifies three situations in which daily sanitizing is particularly important:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- The baby is younger than 2 months.
- The baby was born prematurely.
- The baby has a weakened immune system because of illness or medical treatment.
For an older, healthy baby, daily sanitizing may not be necessary if every feeding item is cleaned carefully after each use. A pediatrician may give different advice for a child with a medical condition; follow that individualized guidance.
How to choose between boiling and steam
Choose boiling when
- Your bottle and component instructions explicitly permit boiling.
- You want a method based on a simple five-minute timed instruction.
- You have a suitable pot, clean tongs, and a protected place for air-drying.
- You do not want to buy or maintain a separate steam appliance.
Choose steam when
- Your bottle parts are approved for the specific microwave or plug-in steam system.
- You can follow the system’s water, loading, cycle, cooling, and drying instructions precisely.
- You sanitize frequently and the system’s capacity fits the number and shape of parts you use.
Use the dishwasher when
- All parts are dishwasher-safe.
- The dishwasher supplies hot water and heated drying or has a sanitizing setting.
- You can disassemble and position parts so the spray reaches every surface.
If a component’s compatibility is unknown, do not choose a method based on convenience alone. Use the manufacturer’s instructions or replace the component with one whose care requirements are clear.

Safe handling, drying, and storage
Heat treatment can leave parts hot, wet, and easy to contaminate. Handling is part of the procedure.
- Wash your hands before touching cleaned or sanitized parts.
- Use clean tongs for boiled items and follow the steam unit’s instructions for unloading hot parts.
- Place parts on a clean, unused towel or paper towel in a protected area.
- Allow complete air-drying; do not use a dish towel to rub or pat parts dry.
- Inspect dry parts before assembly. Discard or replace pieces with cracks, tears, clouding, distorted seals, or other damage.
- Store dry parts where dust, splashes, and hands cannot contaminate them.
Common questions about bottle sanitizing
Do I need a baby-bottle steam sterilizer?
No. CDC lists steam systems as an option, but it does not require a dedicated appliance. Boiling is also an accepted method, and a qualifying dishwasher can eliminate a separate sanitizing step.
Is boiling safer than steam?
Current CDC guidance recognizes both methods and does not provide a head-to-head result showing that one is safer or removes more germs. Safe use depends on cleaning first, following compatibility instructions, completing the prescribed cycle, and preventing recontamination during cooling and drying.

Can I sanitize a bottle without taking it apart?
No procedure should assume that heat reaches hidden milk residue. Disassemble feeding items before boiling, steaming, or placing them in the dishwasher, and clean each piece after every feeding.
Can I towel-dry sanitized parts?
CDC’s procedure is to let sanitized items air-dry thoroughly on a clean, unused towel or paper towel in a protected area. Do not rub or pat them dry with a dish towel.
Does a microwave automatically sanitize bottles?
No. Use only a microwave steam container approved for the parts, add the specified amount of water, and follow its power, cycle, cooling, and drying instructions. Never place a bottle component in a microwave unless its instructions specifically allow that use.

For a healthy older baby whose parts are cleaned carefully after every feeding, daily sanitizing may not be necessary. When sanitizing is needed, boiling for five minutes and manufacturer-directed steam are both CDC-listed choices. Pick boiling if your parts tolerate it and you prefer a pot-based process; pick steam if every part fits and is approved for your particular system; or use a dishwasher that combines hot water with heated drying or a sanitizing setting. The method matters less than complete cleaning, correct compatibility checks, careful hot-item handling, and thorough protected air-drying.
