Steam can suppress soilborne pathogens, weeds and some nematodes, but it is not yet a universal replacement for chemical fumigation. In California strawberry trials, a tractor-drawn steam applicator produced weed and pathogen control comparable to chloropicrin plus 1,3-dichloropropene under the tested conditions. Results depend on heating the full target soil volume to an effective temperature, and commercial throughput, cost and long-term performance remain uncertain. Chemical fumigation is established in some production systems, but product labels, buffer rules and local restrictions govern every use.

What the comparison actually shows

The strongest direct comparison comes from a USDA Agricultural Research Service evaluation at four California sites over two years (2011–2013). Steam was injected and mixed through formed strawberry beds with a tractor-drawn applicator. Weed and soilborne-pathogen suppression was statistically comparable to a commercial chloropicrin plus 1,3-dichloropropene treatment in those trials. The finding applies to those crops, soils, pests, equipment and operating conditions—not to every field or disease.

A 2025 California Council on Science & Technology assessment summarized field studies reporting marketable strawberry-yield increases of 18% to 214% over untreated soil. That is a range across studies, not a prediction for an individual farm. The same assessment found limited evidence on how long suppression lasts, no published statewide commercial-adoption acreage, and unresolved questions about energy use, throughput and economics.

California’s Department of Pesticide Regulation (DPR) stated on August 6, 2026, that an independent study found no existing alternative that can directly substitute for chemical fumigants on a wide scale. A $175,000 Santa Cruz County pilot began testing steam in berry fields near sensitive locations in summer 2026 and is expected to continue research into 2027. Steam is therefore best treated as a target-specific option—especially where fumigant exposure is a concern—rather than as a drop-in replacement.

How steam soil disinfestation works

Heat must reach the whole treatment zone

Steam transfers heat into soil. Pathogens, weed seeds and nematodes are suppressed only where the soil reaches the required temperature for the required exposure time. Cold pockets, compacted layers, excessive depth or poor steam distribution can leave viable inoculum behind. Bed shape, soil texture, moisture, organic matter and the applicator’s mixing action all affect uniformity.

Pests that can be targeted

The California assessment discusses suppression of fungal pathogens, weeds and plant-parasitic nematodes, including Pythium ultimum, Macrophomina phaseolina, Fusarium oxysporum, Verticillium dahliae and Meloidogyne arenaria. “Suppression” is the defensible term: the available evidence does not establish guaranteed eradication of every organism or protection for every crop.

What equipment does

Field systems generate steam, deliver it into a bed or soil layer, and commonly mix the heated soil mechanically as the machine advances. Commercial applicators and contract services exist, but the published California assessment does not establish current prices, machine capacities or service coverage. Greenhouse and small-plot work can use stationary steam sources, insulated covers or specialized treatment chambers; field-scale work requires substantially more heat-generation, delivery and handling capacity.

How chemical fumigation differs

Chemical fumigation uses registered pesticide products that move through soil as gases or volatile compounds. The California comparison used chloropicrin plus 1,3-dichloropropene, but efficacy, application method, waiting period and permitted crops are product-specific. A grower must follow the current U.S. Environmental Protection Agency label and state or local requirements; there is no generic, safe application rate that applies to all fumigants.

Fumigants can create worker and off-site exposure concerns because vapors may move beyond the treated bed. California’s program includes sensitive-site concerns and buffer-zone controls. Steam avoids applying those fumigant chemicals, but the available sources do not quantify comparative occupational risk and do not support calling steam risk-free. Hot surfaces, pressurized steam, burns, heat stress, soil recontamination and incomplete treatment remain practical hazards.

Evidence comparison

Decision axis Steam treatment Chemical fumigation
Disease and pest efficacy Can suppress multiple pathogens, weeds and nematodes in soil that receives the required heat exposure. Performance depends on depth, temperature uniformity, moisture and equipment. Can provide broad preplant control, but efficacy and permitted uses are specific to the product, target pest, crop and label. The California field comparison used chloropicrin plus 1,3-dichloropropene.
Scale and equipment Needs steam-generation, delivery and often soil-mixing equipment. Commercial systems and services exist; published adoption acreage and universal capacity figures are not established. Established systems remain widely used in some production contexts, subject to regulated products, application expertise and local restrictions.
Community exposure Does not apply a chemical fumigant. California is testing it near sensitive locations, but the sources do not quantify risk reduction. Volatile products can create worker and off-site exposure concerns; buffer zones and other controls may apply.
Duration One cited study observed nematode suppression for at least seven weeks, the longest observation point in that study. Duration across crops and pathogens is not settled. No comparable persistence result is established here. Follow product-specific directions and target-pest evidence.
Cost and throughput No general cost per acre, break-even acreage, fuel use or throughput has been established. Efficiency and economics remain research needs. No direct current cost comparison was established in the cited sources; costs vary with product, rates, labor, regulation and field conditions.

When steam is a sensible choice

  • Sensitive locations: Fields near schools, homes or other sites where fumigant vapor-management requirements are difficult or unacceptable may justify evaluating steam.
  • High-value or contained production: Greenhouses, nurseries, research plots and small high-value beds can sometimes absorb specialized equipment or labor more readily than broad-acre operations.
  • Known shallow targets: Steam is easier to validate when the pathogen or weed problem is concentrated in a defined, reachable soil depth.
  • Integrated programs: Steam can be combined with sanitation, resistant cultivars, clean transplants, drainage improvement, rotation and biological or cultural tactics rather than treated as a stand-alone guarantee.

Steam is a poor fit when the target lies deeper than the system can heat uniformly, when continuous acreage exceeds available generation capacity, or when the crop’s schedule cannot accommodate treatment and cooling. A pilot on representative beds is more defensible than converting an entire farm without local performance data.

Greenhouse and small-scale steam procedure

UMass Extension guidance for greenhouse soil recommends bringing the entire soil mass to 160°F–180°F (about 71°C–82°C) for 30 minutes. This is greenhouse guidance, not a universal field prescription. Crop, substrate, depth, equipment and target organism may require a different validated protocol.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Define the target and treatment depth. Identify the pathogen, weed or nematode, the crop to be planted and the soil volume that must be treated. Do not assume a surface temperature represents the full bed.
  2. Prepare the soil. Remove plant debris and break up clods or compacted layers that could block heat. UMass advises soil moisture similar to good planting conditions: soil squeezed in the hand should crumble easily. Overly wet soil heats slowly, while some moisture is necessary for efficient heat transfer.
  3. Moisten evenly in advance when possible. The extension guidance suggests moistening two to three weeks before treatment when practical, allowing moisture to equilibrate through the soil rather than leaving wet and dry pockets.
  4. Position the steam system and seals. Use the equipment manufacturer’s cover, injector or chamber arrangement. Prevent steam from bypassing the soil at edges, cracks or drainage paths.
  5. Place multiple accurate thermometers or probes. Measure at several locations and depths, including edges and the coldest-looking areas. Heating is complete only when the entire monitored soil mass reaches the chosen threshold.
  6. Hold the target temperature. For the cited greenhouse protocol, maintain 160°F–180°F throughout the soil mass for 30 minutes. Record readings rather than relying on elapsed machine time.
  7. Cool and protect the treated soil. Avoid walking contaminated tools, containers, irrigation lines or plant material back into the treated area. Recontamination can undermine an otherwise successful treatment.
  8. Document the run. Keep date, soil moisture, depth, probe locations, temperatures, hold time, equipment settings and any untreated control. These records make a farm-specific decision possible at the next crop cycle.

Planning a field steam trial

Start with a mapped problem

Map disease incidence, weed escapes, soil texture, bed dimensions and irrigation zones. Sample soil or plants through an appropriate diagnostic laboratory before treatment. A mixed field average can conceal a hot spot that the machine does not heat adequately.

Set measurable endpoints

  • Record temperatures at multiple depths and across the bed width.
  • Count target weeds or assay pathogen and nematode levels before and after treatment.
  • Measure stand establishment, plant vigor, disease incidence and marketable yield.
  • Leave untreated comparison strips where agronomically safe, and document any standard fumigation or alternative treatment separately.
  • Track machine hours, fuel or energy consumption, labor, water, covers, transport and downtime.

Check depth and uniformity before expanding

A machine may produce adequate heat in the center of a formed bed but not at shoulders, wheel tracks or deeper layers. Verify the coldest points under the actual soil moisture and bed geometry used in commercial production. If the system cannot meet the target consistently, changing the pest-management claim is safer than simply increasing speed.

Choosing chemical fumigation responsibly

  1. Identify the exact product and target. Confirm that the product is registered for the crop, site and pest in your jurisdiction.
  2. Read the current label. Labels control rates, injection depth, sealing, worker-protection requirements, reentry, planting intervals, buffer zones and emergency procedures.
  3. Check state and local rules. Requirements can be stricter than the federal label, especially near sensitive sites or populated areas.
  4. Use certified expertise. Application may require a licensed or certified applicator, trained handlers, monitoring equipment and a written management plan.
  5. Plan for neighbors and workers. Follow notification, posting, buffer and air-monitoring requirements where applicable. Never improvise a fumigant rate from another crop or product.
  6. Verify planting clearance. Do not plant until the label’s waiting period and any required concentration or aeration checks are satisfied.

These steps do not make fumigation interchangeable with steam; they show why a chemical option must be evaluated as a regulated product-specific operation.

Economics, labor and throughput: what is known

The available evidence does not establish a general steam cost per acre, break-even acreage, comparable fuel or energy use, or universal throughput. Steam may avoid fumigant purchase and some exposure-management burdens, but it can require substantial capital, fuel, water, labor, transport and treatment time. A slow machine can create opportunity costs during a narrow planting window.

Fumigation economics likewise vary with product price, application contractor, bed preparation, sealing, buffer-related acreage, monitoring and delays. Because no direct current comparison was established, calculate both options with local quotations and records rather than using an online per-acre assumption.

Duration and reinfestation

Heat treatment does not create a permanent biological barrier. Pathogens or nematodes can return in contaminated transplants, tools, irrigation water, windblown soil, compost or adjacent untreated ground. The California assessment cites one study with nematode suppression lasting at least seven weeks—the study’s longest observation point—not a guaranteed field-life estimate. It also reports limited published data on duration of inactivation across crops and organisms.

Plan sanitation and follow-up monitoring from the start. If disease returns after a short interval, determine whether treatment failed to reach the target depth, the initial diagnosis was incomplete, or the site was rapidly recontaminated.

Safety and environmental limits

Steam hazards

  • Pressurized steam and hot metal can cause severe burns; guard hoses, fittings and access points.
  • Use lockout and depressurization procedures before servicing.
  • Manage heat stress, visibility and slip hazards around condensate and wet soil.
  • Keep untrained workers and bystanders away from the operating zone.
  • Verify that plastic covers, seals and sensors are rated for the operating temperature.

Fumigant hazards

  • Follow the product label, applicator certification rules and worker-protection requirements.
  • Respect buffer zones, posting, notification, monitoring and reentry restrictions.
  • Plan for vapor movement, weather changes, leaks and emergency response.
  • Never infer safety from odor; some hazardous concentrations may be difficult to detect reliably by smell.

Steam avoids applying the fumigants used in the California comparison, but the cited sources do not provide a quantified risk reduction or a claim that steam is harmless.

What current California projects mean for growers

The USDA trial demonstrates technical feasibility in California strawberries, not universal replacement. The 2025 state assessment identifies unresolved commercial-scale questions. DPR’s 2026 announcement explicitly says no alternative currently substitutes for fumigants at wide scale, while the Santa Cruz pilot is testing whether steam can work near sensitive sites. UC Santa Cruz researcher Jenny Broome, who has studied preplant fumigant alternatives with UC Davis weed scientist Steve Fennimore for 13 years, called steam “one of the most promising approaches” for moving away from soil fumigants, particularly near schools and other sensitive sites. That is her expert assessment, not a regulatory finding.

Growers should treat these projects as reasons to measure local performance, not as proof that a particular machine, crop or county has already solved the scale problem. Commercial efficiency, economics and treatment longevity remain under evaluation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does steam soil treatment replace fumigation on every farm?

No. California’s regulator said in 2026 that no existing alternative directly substitutes for chemical fumigants at wide scale. Steam performance must be validated for the crop, pest, soil depth, equipment and production schedule.

What temperature and time should greenhouse soil reach?

UMass Extension greenhouse guidance calls for the entire soil mass to reach 160°F–180°F for 30 minutes, checked at several locations with accurate thermometers. Field systems require crop- and equipment-specific protocols.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is steam cheaper than chemical fumigation?

The available sources do not establish a general cost-per-acre or break-even comparison. Measure local equipment, energy, water, labor, product, compliance and delay costs.

How long does steam keep nematodes suppressed?

One cited study observed suppression for at least seven weeks, which was its longest observation point. That is not a universal duration guarantee.
