Use Steam when you need a picture of how players are experiencing a game now; use Metacritic’s Metascore when you want the published critical response; use Metacritic’s User Score when you specifically want another player-rating signal. These numbers are not competing measurements of the same thing. Steam aggregates recommendations from eligible Steam customers, while the Metascore is a weighted summary of selected critics. Neither score can predict whether you personally will enjoy a game.
The most dependable decision comes from matching the metric to your question, checking the release date and version, and reading enough dated reviews to understand why people rated the game as they did.
Steam, Metascore and User Score measure different populations
A score is meaningful only when you know who supplied it and what they were asked to rate. Steam and Metacritic use different contributors, rules and time windows.

Metacritic does not add user votes to the Metascore. Its support documentation explicitly separates the critic calculation from the User Score (Metacritic’s explanation of user votes). Calling the Metascore a player rating therefore gives the wrong impression.

What the Steam score includes
Recommendation, not a standardized review mark
Steam asks a customer to recommend or not recommend a product. The written review can discuss far more than design quality: value for money, bugs, business practices, customer service and the behavior of the game’s community are all within scope. Steam’s User Reviews documentation describes the store score as an aggregate of positive and negative reviews.
This makes the score useful for a practical purchase question, but it also means two people can evaluate the same game on different grounds. One may recommend a technically rough game because the core play is exceptional; another may not recommend it because a publisher changed monetization or because multiplayer matchmaking is empty.
Eligibility and visible reviews
Only reviews from accounts that purchased the game on Steam are included in the score. Steam can display reviews written by people who played through another route, such as a key or a shared library, so the visible review feed is broader than the population that determines the headline percentage. Check the purchase indicator and the text when that distinction matters.
Recent versus lifetime reception
Steam shows a lifetime score and a score for the past 30 days. The recent figure can reveal whether a patch, price change or service problem has altered the experience, while the lifetime figure records the full history of the product. A new release with only a short history can swing quickly; an established game may have a stable lifetime score that hides a current decline or improvement.

Steam’s prominent-review display favors recently written, helpful reviews. Authors can update a review after playing more, and Early Access reviews are labeled. Treat a highly visible review as a starting point, not as a statistically representative sample.
What the Metacritic scores include
The critic Metascore
Metacritic converts critics’ publication scores to a common 0–100 scale and applies undisclosed publication weights. The company says the scores for games come from the publications themselves rather than being assigned by Metacritic staff. Its methodology explanation describes the result as a weighted average, and the About Us page presents it as a summary of critical consensus.
Because the participating outlets, their review policies and the weighting system differ from Steam’s customer pool, a Metascore is not a more formal version of the Steam percentage. It is an answer to a different question: how the selected critic record assesses the game.

The User Score
The User Score is Metacritic’s separate player-facing average. It is the relevant Metacritic number when you are comparing users with Steam users. Do not substitute it for the Metascore in a critics-versus-players comparison, and do not assume that a high User Score and a high Steam score represent the same audience or rating process.

Why the numbers can disagree
Different scores are expected when the underlying conditions differ. A mismatch is a reason to investigate, not proof that one service is wrong.

Which player ratings should you trust?
There is no evidence-based universal winner. Trust the signal that matches your decision and then verify it with dated text.
If you are deciding whether to play the game now
Start with Steam’s recent score and current reviews, especially when the game is a live service, recently patched or dependent on an active community. Look for reports from the same operating system, graphics hardware, console generation or region you will use. The lifetime score supplies history; it should not override a clearly documented current problem.

Read the Metascore alongside several of the linked critic reviews. The aggregate can show the broad direction of criticism, but the individual articles explain whether praise or criticism concerns level design, writing, accessibility, technical performance or another criterion that matters to you.

If you specifically want a second player signal
Use Metacritic’s User Score, not the Metascore, and compare its vote count and dated comments with Steam’s. The populations are not identical, so agreement is reassuring but disagreement is not automatically evidence of manipulation.
A practical method for comparing scores in ten minutes
- Write down the question. Decide whether you are evaluating current playability, long-term value, critical craft or player satisfaction. This determines which score gets priority.
- Record all three available signals. Note Steam’s recent and lifetime scores, the Metascore and the Metacritic User Score, together with each displayed contribution count.
- Check release status. Confirm whether the game is in Early Access, newly launched or fully released. Metacritic allows Early Access critic reviews to be visible, but those reviews are not scored toward the final Metascore. Metacritic enables game user ratings after full release, according to its Early Access policy.
- Match platform and version. Filter or search for reviews that name your platform and read the date. A launch-build complaint may be irrelevant after a fix; a recent console performance complaint may not apply to a high-end PC.
- Inspect the distribution. On Steam, look at the balance of positive and negative recommendations and whether the recent graph differs sharply from lifetime reception. On Metacritic, treat a small User Score sample as volatile rather than as a precise measurement. No universal sample-size cutoff establishes when either score is statistically reliable.
- Read reasons, not just adjectives. Open recent positive and negative Steam reviews, then read several critic articles behind the Metascore. Extract concrete claims about crashes, frame rate, progression, matchmaking, monetization, accessibility and content length.
- Investigate sudden changes. Identify the event before a spike or drop: a patch, price change, account policy, server outage or unrelated controversy. Steam documents a process for reducing the visibility of off-topic review-bombing periods and removing reviews that violate its rules, but that policy does not prove that any particular score is manipulated.
- Apply your priorities. Decide which documented strengths and weaknesses matter to you. A score is evidence to weigh, not a substitute for that decision.
How to read Steam’s time and language context
Recent reviews can be more relevant, not automatically more accurate
A recent score reflects the product people are encountering now, which is valuable for evolving games. It can also be dominated by a short-lived event. Read the review dates and the event that prompted them before treating a sudden shift as a permanent change.
Language-specific scores
Valve announced language-specific review scores in 2025 for games with at least 2,000 publicly visible reviews and at least 200 reviews in one language (Steam’s announcement). Where the feature applies, the displayed score can vary by language. The threshold describes when Valve says the feature is available; it is not evidence that one language’s score is more accurate. If your store view offers a language filter, compare the relevant language rather than silently mixing audiences.

Early Access, launches and old versions
Release stage is one of the easiest ways to make a false comparison. An Early Access Steam review may evaluate an unfinished build and is labeled as such. Metacritic can show Early Access critic reviews, but they do not enter the eventual final Metascore, and users cannot submit a game User Score until full release under the policy linked above.

For a launch comparison, separate reviews written before and after the first major patch. Note whether a critic reviewed a review code supplied before launch while Steam customers bought the public build. Neither timing is inherently more trustworthy; they answer different questions about the product at different moments.
Review bombing and coordinated campaigns
Steam defines review bombing as a surge intended to lower a score and provoke a response. It may remove reviews that break its rules; reviews judged off-topic can receive reduced visibility while still counting. That means a sharp movement deserves context rather than an automatic dismissal. Read the dates, the stated reasons and independent discussion of the triggering event.
Do not label a score manipulated solely because it is low, high or different from Metacritic. The available documentation explains Steam’s handling process, but it does not establish that any specific game’s current score is fraudulent. A campaign can contain legitimate customer grievances, off-topic posts or both; the written evidence tells you which concerns apply to your purchase.

Common mistakes to avoid
- Calling the Metascore a player rating. It is a weighted critic score. Use User Score for Metacritic’s player signal.
- Comparing a lifetime Steam score with a launch-week Metascore without dates. The products and versions being evaluated may not match.
- Equating a percentage with review quality. Steam’s positive recommendation does not grade every element on a common scale.
- Ignoring contribution counts. A score based on few votes is less settled, even though no official universal cutoff tells you exactly how many are enough.
- Assuming visible Steam reviews all count toward the store score. The score includes reviews from Steam purchasers; other visible reviews may not affect the aggregate.
- Reading only the top positive review. Sort through recent and negative reviews to find recurring failure modes and whether they were fixed.
- Treating a disagreement as proof of bias. Different populations, platforms, dates and questions naturally produce different results.
Bottom line
For the question “Will players like this experience in practice right now?”, Steam’s recent score and review text are usually the most directly relevant evidence. For “How did selected critics assess the finished game?”, use the Metascore and the underlying publications. For a player-to-player comparison across services, compare Steam with Metacritic’s User Score, never with the Metascore alone. In every case, the trustworthy part is the combination of the correctly identified metric, matching version and platform, contribution context and specific reasons in the reviews.
