Neither Steam Remote Play nor Moonlight is proven to be universally faster or smoother. Both stream a game running on your gaming PC to another device, and both depend heavily on your host, client, video encoding and decoding, settings, and network. Steam Remote Play is usually the simpler fit for a Steam library and has a distinct advantage for inviting friends into supported local multiplayer through Remote Play Together. Moonlight with Sunshine is a separate host-and-client setup that offers broad client support and documented hardware encoding for AMD, Intel, and Nvidia GPUs. The better choice is the one that fits your games and devices—and performs better on your actual network.

How Steam Remote Play and Moonlight work

In either setup, the game runs on the gaming PC, not on the device in your hands. The host PC renders the game, captures its video and audio, and sends the stream over the network. Your remote device displays it and sends controller or keyboard input back to the game. Streaming changes where you play; it does not move the game’s rendering workload off the host.

Steam Remote Play

Steam Remote Play connects a computer running Steam to another Steam-connected computer or a supported Steam Link device. Valve says all Steam games can be streamed between a user’s own computers. Steam Link extends the experience to supported devices, but check availability and compatibility for the particular device and app you intend to use. Valve’s Steam Remote Play support page and Remote Play feature page describe the supported workflows.

Moonlight with Sunshine

Moonlight is the client; Sunshine is a host program installed on the gaming PC. Moonlight’s FAQ recommends Sunshine as the host. Sunshine supports hardware encoding on AMD, Intel, and Nvidia GPUs, as well as software encoding. After installing Sunshine, you pair a Moonlight client with it and launch an available game or app. Sunshine includes Steam and a remote desktop entry, and lets you add other apps. The Moonlight FAQ and Sunshine documentation explain the roles of the two programs.

Which one fits your use case?

What matters to you Better starting point Why
Your games are already in Steam and you want a straightforward setup Steam Remote Play Start from Steam on the host and sign in to Steam on the client; you can launch from your library.
You want friends to join a supported local-multiplayer game you own Steam Remote Play Together The host launches the game and invites friends through Steam. Valve says up to four players can join, or more with fast connections; the feature applies to supported games.
You want to stream an app or desktop entry beyond the normal Steam library workflow Moonlight with Sunshine Sunshine has a remote desktop entry and supports adding apps to launch from Moonlight.
You need a particular client device Check both platforms first Moonlight lists official clients across several operating systems and device types; Steam Link availability is device-specific. Confirm current support for the exact device and app.
You are willing to configure a separate host/client stack and tune more settings Moonlight with Sunshine It requires installing Sunshine on the host, installing Moonlight on the client, pairing them, and selecting an app or game.

The table is a decision guide, not a performance ranking. The official documentation reviewed does not provide a controlled head-to-head test that establishes one option as categorically lower-latency or better-looking.

Where the two options differ

Games and invitations

For streaming your own Steam games between your computers, Valve says all Steam games can be streamed. That does not mean every game supports every related feature: Remote Play Together is for supported local-multiplayer games, and device suitability can differ. Check the game’s Steam store page for Remote Play Together support when inviting friends is the goal.

Remote Play Together is not just a way to give another player a separate stream of your desktop. One player launches the supported local-multiplayer game and invites friends through Steam. Valve’s feature page describes a limit of up to four players, with more possible on fast connections. The reviewed Moonlight documentation describes streaming host games and apps, not a matching Steam friends-invite feature.

Host and client compatibility

For Valve’s documented Remote Play guidance, the host should have at least a quad-core CPU; the client should have a GPU capable of hardware-accelerated H.264 decoding. Valve recommends wired networking for the best experience. These are recommendations, not guarantees of a particular stream quality or frame rate.

  • The unique flat cable shape allows for a cleaner and safer installation. You can easily and seamlessly make the cable run along walls, follow edges & corners or even make it completely invisible by sliding it under a carpet.

Sunshine’s documented hardware-encoding support covers AMD, Intel, and Nvidia GPUs, with software encoding also available. That does not by itself establish that every specific PC can encode every format at a desired resolution and frame rate. The client still has to decode the chosen stream smoothly. Moonlight’s Setup Guide lists requirements by client platform and warns that older PCs without hardware-accelerated H.264 decoding may rely on the CPU; older systems may struggle to stream at 60 FPS without lag.

Client devices

Moonlight lists official clients for Windows, macOS, Linux, Raspberry Pi 4, Steam Link hardware, Android, Amazon Fire tablets and TVs, iOS, Apple TV, and ChromeOS. Check the current Moonlight setup guide for the requirements for your target platform, since device support and operating-system requirements can change. For Steam Remote Play, Valve documents PC-to-PC streaming and support through Steam Link; verify current availability for the particular device and app.

Special case: VR

Valve’s VR Remote Play guidance is separate from ordinary game streaming. Its stated requirements include Windows 10 or newer, a GTX 970 or better, 5 GHz Wi-Fi 5, a wired PC-to-router connection, and a Meta Quest 2, 3, or Pro. Valve also says Remote Play Together is not supported for VR. Do not apply these VR-specific requirements to ordinary Steam Remote Play; review Valve’s Remote Play feature page for that use case.

Network quality matters more than the name of the app

A stream has to travel from the host through the network to the client, then be decoded and displayed. A weak wireless hop, a busy connection, or a client that cannot decode smoothly can undermine either setup. Start by improving the path between host and router, then check the client connection and decoding performance before changing several streaming settings at once.

  • Wire the host to the router when practical. Valve recommends wired networking for the best Remote Play experience. Moonlight recommends Ethernet from the host to the router and a strong 5 GHz Wi-Fi 5 (802.11ac) or Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax) connection to the client.
  • Give the client a strong connection. For Moonlight, the setup guide recommends a mid- to high-end router with good 5 GHz Wi-Fi 5 or Wi-Fi 6 coverage to the client. A wired client connection can also be useful where available.
  • Reduce load if the stream struggles. Valve suggests lowering the game resolution or disabling VSync if you need to improve the Remote Play experience. Change one setting at a time so you can tell what helped.
  • Check the client decoder. Hardware-accelerated H.264 decoding is part of Valve’s recommended client guidance. Moonlight notes that older PCs may fall back to CPU decoding, which can be a bottleneck.

If the gaming PC currently connects to the router over Wi-Fi, using Ethernet for the host is a sensible troubleshooting step, not a promise that a new cable will fix every problem. Moonlight’s network recommendations and Valve’s Remote Play guidance both emphasize the connection path.

How to set up Steam Remote Play

Valve’s documented workflow is to run Steam on the gaming PC and sign in to Steam on the client. Exact labels and device steps can vary by platform, so use Valve’s support page for the current instructions for your device.

  1. Prepare the host: connect the gaming PC to the network, launch Steam, and sign in. Keep the PC available to run the game during the stream.
  2. Prepare the client: sign in to Steam on another computer or open Steam Link on a supported device. Confirm that the client device and app currently support the feature.
  3. Connect and launch: select the host or its game library from the client, then start the game. The game runs on the host while the client receives the stream.
  4. For local multiplayer, check support first: verify Remote Play Together support on the game’s store page. Launch the game on the host and invite friends through Steam.

For troubleshooting, begin with the host’s network connection and the client’s decode capability. If the stream is not satisfactory, Valve suggests reducing game resolution or disabling VSync. The Steam Remote Play support FAQ includes Valve’s current recommendations and performance options.

  5. Test locally before adding remote access. Confirm that pairing, controls, video, and audio work on the home network before configuring access from outside it.

Moonlight’s FAQ describes UPnP as an automatic option for Sunshine internet access and lists other setup paths. It also notes that some connections without a dedicated public IP can use ZeroTier, which requires more configuration. If you expose a host for remote access, understand the router and firewall changes you make rather than assuming local pairing automatically enables safe internet access.

Streaming over the internet instead of at home

Steam Remote Play can be used beyond a local host-client setup, subject to the connection and configuration. Moonlight’s guide covers internet access to Sunshine, including UPnP and other paths. Remote streaming depends on the home network’s upload capacity as well as the client-side connection: Moonlight recommends leaving at least 1 Mbps beyond the selected streaming bitrate in the home’s upload capacity for other traffic. That is a recommendation from Moonlight’s guide, not a guarantee that a connection will be stable at a particular bitrate.

For Moonlight remote access, decide whether to use the documented automatic UPnP route or another supported configuration based on your network. If you lack a dedicated public IP, the FAQ identifies ZeroTier as an option that involves additional setup. Consult the Moonlight guide and FAQ before changing router or firewall settings.

HDR, performance overlays, and what they can tell you

HDR is conditional, not an automatic consequence of choosing either app. Moonlight’s guide describes HDR10 support on certain clients and specifies codec and display requirements, along with known issues. Check the live requirements for the host, client, codec, and display combination before relying on HDR.

Both ecosystems provide ways to inspect performance, but their numbers are not a head-to-head benchmark. Valve documents a performance overlay and hardware-encoding options. Moonlight provides client performance statistics, with available measurements varying by client and hardware. Compare figures only when you understand what each overlay measures; unlike metrics cannot establish that one service is faster.

How to compare them fairly at home

No controlled head-to-head latency or image-quality result is established by the official material cited here. If performance is the deciding factor, make a repeatable comparison on the devices and network where you actually plan to play.

  1. Use the same gaming PC, client device, game, gameplay scene, controller, and network location for both attempts.
  2. Match output resolution and frame rate, and use hardware encoding and decoding where each setup supports them. Record the codec and bitrate so a different stream configuration does not masquerade as an app advantage.
  3. Play the same scene for several minutes in each setup. Note perceived input response, stutter, image artifacts, audio behavior, and connection stability.
  4. Inspect each app’s overlay or available logs, while keeping in mind that different tools may report different measurements.
  5. Repeat the comparison from the network location you will actually use, such as another room or an internet connection away from home. A result on a wired local network may not predict remote performance.

This method helps isolate settings and connection differences; it is not a published benchmark. The host’s encoder, client’s decoder, and network path can all confound a casual comparison.
