Choose Steam Remote Play if your games are in Steam and you want the least setup, or if you need Remote Play Together for online local co-op. Choose Moonlight with Sunshine if you are willing to configure a separate host and client and want Moonlight’s wider documented range of client platforms and GPU vendors. Neither option has an official, controlled benchmark proving universally lower latency or better picture quality, so your network, hardware, game and controller should decide the final choice.
Steam Remote Play vs. Moonlight at a glance
| Decision point | Steam Remote Play | Moonlight with Sunshine |
|---|---|---|
| Basic model | Steam streams a game running on one Steam-connected computer to another supported device; input returns to the host. | Moonlight is a client for NVIDIA’s GameStream protocol. Sunshine is the recommended open-source host server. |
| Best fit | Games already in Steam, minimal configuration, and Remote Play Together sessions. | People comfortable installing, pairing and tuning a separate host/client stack. |
| Remote co-op | Remote Play Together lets a Steam user invite friends into supported local co-op games; guests do not need to own or launch the game. | No equivalent Steam-specific invitation feature is provided by Moonlight itself. |
| Host software | Steam must be running on the host computer. | Install and configure Sunshine (or another compatible host) on the gaming computer. |
| GPU support documented by the host project | Depends on Steam’s supported host and encoding path. | Sunshine documents hardware encoding for AMD, Intel and Nvidia GPUs. |

| Configuration effort | Usually low when the game launches normally in Steam. | Higher: host installation, encoder settings, pairing, game discovery and client configuration. |
| Official latency or image-quality winner | Not established. The available official documentation does not provide a controlled head-to-head test. | |
What Steam Remote Play actually does
Steam Remote Play runs the game on a primary computer and sends its video and audio to another device while sending keyboard, mouse or gamepad input back to the host. Steam describes it as requiring minimal setup when the game launches correctly on the primary PC. The host does the rendering and game logic; the client is a display and input endpoint. The Steam Remote Play support page explains the supported flow and current limitations.
For a personal library, Steam says all Steam games can be streamed between your own computers. That does not mean every title, controller or operating-system combination behaves identically: overlays, launchers, anti-cheat systems and legacy input devices can still affect a session.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesRemote Play Together is the feature that most clearly separates Steam from Moonlight in this comparison. A player who owns and launches a local co-op game in Steam can invite friends to join remotely; invited players do not have to buy or launch that game themselves. Details and supported behavior can change, so use Valve’s Remote Play product page and the in-client invite controls for the current game.

What Moonlight and Sunshine do
Moonlight is not a game host. It is an unofficial, open-source client for NVIDIA’s GameStream streaming protocol. The Moonlight project recommends Sunshine as its open-source host. Sunshine runs on the gaming computer, captures and encodes the game, then presents games or applications to a paired Moonlight client. Sunshine’s documentation describes hardware encoding support for AMD, Intel and Nvidia GPUs.
This separation is powerful but adds decisions. You select a host operating system, install Sunshine, grant the permissions it requests, pair the client with a PIN, and decide which games or desktop applications Sunshine exposes. Moonlight then connects to that host over your network. The project’s Setup Guide lists current platform and configuration details; check it before installing because operating-system support and instructions can change.
Moonlight’s documented clients cover more device categories than a typical Steam-only setup: Windows, macOS, Linux, Raspberry Pi 4, Steam Link hardware, Android, Amazon Fire tablets and TVs, iOS, Apple TV and ChromeOS. Its FAQ states that there is no pure web client, so a browser-only television or laptop cannot be treated as a Moonlight endpoint without another supported device.

You want the shortest path from library to living-room screen
If the game is already in Steam and starts normally on the host, begin with Remote Play. Steam handles the game launch, account relationship and streaming session in one ecosystem. You do not have to maintain a second host application or manually add every executable. This is particularly convenient for a household where the host PC is used directly and occasionally streams to a laptop, handheld or television device.

You need Remote Play Together
For couch-style games that support local multiplayer, Remote Play Together is the decisive feature. The host starts the game, opens the friends or invite interface and sends invitations. Remote participants provide their controller input while the host supplies the game process. They do not need their own copy or a separate Moonlight/Sunshine installation.
You prefer Steam’s account and update workflow
Steam updates the game and launches it through the same client you already use. That reduces the number of services to diagnose when a title changes its launcher or executable. Non-Steam applications can sometimes be streamed through Steam, but Steam’s FAQ says that use is not officially supported, so do not choose Remote Play solely for a non-Steam library.
Choose Moonlight with Sunshine when these are your priorities
Your client is outside Steam’s convenient path
Moonlight’s published client list is useful when your endpoint is a Raspberry Pi 4, Apple TV, ChromeOS device, Android television, Amazon Fire TV or another platform where you want a dedicated streaming client. Verify the exact model and operating-system version rather than assuming that every device in a product family is supported.
You want a configurable host/client stack
Sunshine exposes host-side choices that appeal to technically minded users: encoder selection, application entries, resolution and frame-rate targets, and other stream parameters. The trade-off is maintenance. You are responsible for installing updates, pairing clients, correcting permissions and keeping the host reachable on the local network.

Your gaming PC uses AMD or Intel graphics
Sunshine documents hardware encoding on AMD, Intel and Nvidia GPUs. That broadens the host choices beyond an Nvidia-only assumption. Actual results still depend on the GPU generation, driver, operating system, encoder settings and game workload; the documentation is a capability statement, not a promise of identical output across vendors.
Setup walkthroughs
Set up Steam Remote Play
- Install the current Steam client on the gaming computer and the intended client device, or install the supported Steam Link app for that device.
- Sign in to the same Steam account on both personal computers, or follow the app’s pairing process for a Steam Link device.
- On the host, open Steam and confirm that the game launches locally before troubleshooting streaming.
- On the client, open the Steam library or Steam Link interface and select the host computer when it appears.
- Start the game from the client. Steam captures the host’s video and audio and routes client keyboard, mouse or controller input back to the host.
- For local co-op, launch a game that supports Remote Play Together, open the Steam friends or invite overlay and send invitations. Guests join through the invitation rather than launching the game independently.
If the host is not discovered, first confirm that both devices are signed in and on a network that permits local discovery. Steam specifically lists public, workplace, school or university, guest, gateway-login and access-point/client-isolation networks as unsupported scenarios for Remote Play. The Steam Link suggested network settings page describes the network conditions Valve expects.
Set up Moonlight with Sunshine
- Choose a host computer and check the current Sunshine requirements for its operating system and GPU in the Sunshine documentation.
- Install Sunshine on the host. The Moonlight setup guide currently lists Windows 10/11, macOS 12 and newer as experimental, and certain Linux distributions as host options; treat those labels as version-sensitive and verify the live guide before installation.
- Open Sunshine’s web configuration interface, complete its initial account or security setup, and confirm that the host’s hardware encoder is detected.
- Install Moonlight on the client device from the project’s supported platform options.
- Ensure host and client can communicate on the same local network for initial pairing. In Moonlight, select the host; Sunshine displays a PIN or pairing prompt. Enter the PIN in Sunshine’s interface and approve the client.
- Use Sunshine’s application list to launch a game or application. Add an executable or launcher only when it is not detected automatically, and test the title locally on the host first.
- Set a conservative resolution and frame-rate target for the first session. Increase quality after confirming stable discovery, input and audio.
Moonlight’s client and controller behavior can vary by device. Its setup documentation recommends testing particular Android-device and controller combinations because some combinations can show latency or disconnection problems.

Network requirements and failure points
Use a predictable local path first
For the first test, place the host and client on the same private home network. Steam recommends a wired network for Steam Link hardware; a wired connection from the host to the router is particularly useful because it removes one variable from the capture-and-encode path. A Cat 6 Ethernet cable is a reasonable optional purchase when both devices have Ethernet ports, but a cable alone cannot guarantee smooth streaming.

Wi-Fi can work, but radio congestion, distance, interference, mesh-node handoffs and client power-saving behavior can create stutter even when an internet speed test looks fast. Keep the host near the access point or wire it, then test the client in the room where you will actually play.
Recognize unsupported network types
Steam lists public, workplace, school or university, guest, gateway-login and access-point/client-isolation networks as unsupported for Remote Play. These networks may block device discovery or the peer-to-peer traffic required for the session. A managed network administrator, not a new game-streaming setting, may be the only person who can change that.
Separate discovery problems from stream problems
- Host does not appear: confirm both devices are signed in, on the same permitted network, and not isolated by a guest SSID or client-isolation setting.
- Host appears but the game will not start: launch the game directly on the host, clear pending updates, and test whether its launcher or anti-cheat component blocks remote startup.
- Video is black or repeatedly disconnects: lower the client resolution or frame-rate target, update the host GPU driver and verify that Sunshine or Steam is using a supported hardware encoder.
- Controls do not work: reconnect the controller to the client, test another input mode, and check whether the game expects a particular controller layout. Legacy devices have documented limitations in Steam’s FAQ.
- Audio works but input lags: reduce wireless congestion, wire the host, and test with a lower stream target. Do not infer that one application is intrinsically faster without testing both under the same conditions.
Steam’s Steam Link Hardware FAQ includes the statement “Wired network strongly recommended.” It is a recommendation for a more predictable connection, not a measured guarantee of a particular latency or image-quality result.

If you want to compare them at home, keep the test reproducible:
- Use the same host computer, game save, client display, controller and network path.
- Match resolution, frame-rate target, bitrate or quality mode and any hardware-encoding option as closely as each application allows.
- Measure several minutes of the same gameplay rather than judging a single menu or loading screen.
- Record input delay, dropped frames, visible compression, audio glitches and disconnects separately.
- Repeat at the time and location you normally play, because Wi-Fi congestion can change the result.
This method tells you which configuration suits your home. It does not create a universal ranking for every GPU, device, game or network.

Common limitations to check before committing
- Non-Steam games: Steam says streaming non-Steam games may work but is not officially supported.
- Voice recording: Steam’s FAQ says voice recording over streaming is not currently supported.
- Old hardware: Certain legacy controllers and older systems can have Steam Remote Play limitations.
- Android combinations: Moonlight recommends testing the exact Android device and controller because some combinations can introduce latency or disconnections.
- Changing documentation: Steam, Moonlight and Sunshine can revise supported devices, operating systems and known issues. Check their live pages before buying hardware or changing a working setup.
Bottom-line recommendation
Use Steam Remote Play first when convenience, Steam-library integration or Remote Play Together matters most. It is the sensible default for a Steam household and for players who want to start streaming without designing a separate server.
Use Moonlight with Sunshine when your client device is better served by Moonlight’s platform list, your host uses a supported AMD, Intel or Nvidia encoder, or you value control over a self-hosted setup enough to accept pairing and troubleshooting work. Test both on your own network if latency or image quality is the deciding factor; the available documentation does not justify a universal winner.
