Steam Remote Play is the best first choice for most Steam Deck owners playing games from a Steam Library. It is built into Steam, starts from the Library, and needs little configuration when the game already runs correctly on the host PC. Moonlight paired with Sunshine takes longer to configure, but it can launch Steam, manually added programs, and the host desktop while exposing more host and HDR controls.

Neither option has a universal latency or smoothness advantage. Encoding hardware, client decoding, Wi-Fi interference, router configuration, game behavior, and stream settings can change the result. If responsiveness is critical, test both on your own network rather than relying on a blanket winner.

What is the difference between Steam Remote Play and Moonlight?

Steam Remote Play keeps the game in Steam

Steam Remote Play runs the game on your gaming PC. Steam captures the host’s video and audio, sends that stream to the Steam Deck, and returns the Deck’s controls to the game. Valve says games can be streamed between a user’s Steam-connected computers, with supported Steam Link devices extending access. The normal workflow is to sign in to Steam on both devices and choose Stream from the remote Library. Valve describes this as requiring minimal setup when the game launches correctly on the host. See Valve’s Steam Remote Play documentation.

Moonlight uses Sunshine as a separate host service

Moonlight is the client installed on the Steam Deck. Sunshine is the host software installed on the gaming PC. After pairing with the PIN shown by Sunshine, Moonlight presents available applications. Sunshine includes Steam and Remote Desktop by default; you can add other programs or stream the entire desktop. Sunshine’s current Getting Started documentation is identified as version v2026.914.233613 and puts host configuration in a local web interface: Sunshine Getting Started. Moonlight’s setup sequence is documented in its official Setup Guide.

Which is easier for Steam games?

Reader priority Steam Remote Play Moonlight + Sunshine
Starting a game already in Steam Open the remote Steam Library and select Stream; Valve describes minimal setup when the host launches the game correctly. Install and configure Sunshine, install Moonlight, pair with a PIN, then choose Steam or another application.
Non-Steam programs Valve says non-Steam games may work, but they are not officially supported. Add programs manually or stream the desktop, subject to launcher and game compatibility.
Available tuning Controls include speed-versus-quality preference, bandwidth, maximum capture resolution, and advanced encoding options. Sunshine and Moonlight expose host and client configuration, providing more control with more setup.
Recommended network arrangement Valve recommends wired networking for the best streaming experience. Moonlight recommends wiring the host to the router and using strong 5 GHz Wi-Fi on the client, preferably Wi-Fi 5 (802.11ac) or Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax).
HDR documentation The consulted Valve material does not establish a general Steam Deck-specific HDR guarantee. Sunshine documents Windows HDR support subject to GPU, encoder, display, and operating-system conditions; Linux host HDR is experimental, and Moonlight labels HDR10 beta on certain clients.
Controller path Steam Input and Deck controls are integrated with Steam. Valve documents that Steam Input should not add additional latency. Sunshine can emulate gamepads, but available backends and features vary by platform; some newer Windows HID features require a paid machine license.

This table describes workflow and documented capabilities, not a benchmark. Official documentation consulted for this comparison does not establish a controlled, current Steam Remote Play-versus-Moonlight latency winner for every Steam Deck network.

How do I stream PC games to my Steam Deck with Steam Remote Play?

  1. Prepare the host PC. Install or update Steam, sign in to the account that owns the game, and confirm the game starts locally. Remote Play depends on the host being able to launch the title normally.
  2. Sign in on the Deck. Use the same Steam account on the Steam Deck and the gaming PC. Keep both devices connected to the network before starting the stream.
  3. Open the Library. On the Deck, select the game. When the PC is available, the normal launch control changes to Stream; select it.
  4. Adjust the stream if needed. Steam exposes a speed-versus-quality preference, bandwidth controls, maximum capture resolution, and advanced encoding options. Change one setting at a time so you can identify which adjustment fixes a problem.
  5. Check the performance overlay. Steam provides an overlay that can show streaming behavior. Valve notes that variable network time can coincide with stutter or freezing; use the overlay while reproducing the problem instead of guessing.

Steam Remote Play is the natural starting point when every game you want is already in the Steam Library and you prefer one account, one Library, and integrated Deck controls.

How do I set up Moonlight and Sunshine on Steam Deck?

  1. Install Sunshine on the host PC. Follow the current Sunshine Getting Started instructions for the host operating system. Sunshine’s local web interface is where host settings and application entries are managed.
  2. Install Moonlight on the Steam Deck. Launch Moonlight on the Deck after Sunshine is running on the same home network.
  3. Pair the devices locally first. Select the host shown by Moonlight. Moonlight displays a PIN; enter that PIN in Sunshine’s pairing prompt. The Moonlight guide recommends completing this home-network pairing before attempting Internet streaming.
  4. Choose an application. Sunshine supplies Steam and Remote Desktop entries by default. Select Steam for the Steam interface, choose a manually configured program, or use the desktop entry when you need to operate a launcher or application that has no dedicated entry.
  5. Configure only what you need. Moonlight and Sunshine expose host and client settings for resolution, frame rate, codec, input, and other stream behavior. More controls are useful when you have a specific issue, but each additional change creates another variable during troubleshooting.

Moonlight is the better fit when you need a desktop session, a launcher outside Steam, or explicit host-side configuration that Steam Remote Play does not expose in the same way.

  • The unique flat cable shape allows for a cleaner and safer installation. You can easily and seamlessly make the cable run along walls, follow edges & corners or even make it completely invisible by sliding it under a carpet.

What network does each option need?

Wire the gaming PC when practical

Connect the host PC to the router with Ethernet whenever possible. Valve calls wired networking best for the streaming experience, and Moonlight likewise highly recommends a wired server connection. An Ethernet cable is useful only if the current host-to-router link is the weak point; the documentation does not establish a required cable category, brand, speed rating, or guaranteed performance gain.

Give the Deck a strong 5 GHz connection

Moonlight recommends strong 5 GHz client Wi-Fi and identifies Wi-Fi 5 (802.11ac) or Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax) as suitable standards with a mid- to high-end wireless router. A weak signal, congested channel, or distant access point can add jitter even when the Internet connection itself is fast. A new router is not a universal requirement; consider one only when the existing wireless coverage or capacity is inadequate.

Separate local streaming from Internet streaming

Get local pairing and a stable in-home stream working before attempting remote access over the Internet. This isolates host, client, and home-network problems from Internet routing and firewall issues.

How should I tune quality and diagnose stutter?

  1. Reproduce the issue with a consistent game scene. Use the same menu or gameplay area after each change so you can compare behavior.
  2. Watch Steam’s performance overlay when using Remote Play. If network-time variability spikes while the image freezes, first lower stream quality, bandwidth, or maximum capture resolution.
  3. Check the physical path. Verify that the host is actually using Ethernet, the Deck is on the intended 5 GHz network, and the access point is not separated by a weak-signal area.
  4. Change one variable. Lowering resolution can reduce encode and decode work; lowering quality or bandwidth can reduce network pressure. Do not change every option at once, or you will not know which setting helped.
  5. Compare both clients on the same conditions. If responsiveness is decisive, run the same game, host, Deck position, and network conditions through Steam Remote Play and Moonlight. Treat the result as specific to that setup rather than a universal ranking.

Host encoding, client decoding, Wi-Fi interference, router configuration, and the game itself all affect perceived delay. A result on one Deck and router cannot be generalized to every setup.

What are the HDR requirements?

Sunshine on a Windows host

Sunshine documents HDR streaming as officially supported on Windows when the host GPU from Intel, AMD, or NVIDIA can encode HEVC Main 10 or AV1 10-bit. HDR must be active in the host operating system and enabled in Moonlight. A connected HDR display or an EDID emulator may be needed so the host exposes the required display mode. Calibration matters, and an encoder’s HDR path can reduce image quality or performance compared with SDR.

Sunshine on a Linux host

Sunshine describes Linux HDR support as experimental and lists additional requirements involving VAAPI, KMS capture, and an HDR-capable compositor. A Linux host therefore needs more than a compatible GPU; the capture and display stack must also meet those conditions.

Moonlight client caveats

Moonlight’s documentation labels HDR10 streaming beta on certain clients. Stream and host display resolutions that do not match can produce artifacts or scaling problems. Treat HDR as conditional on the Deck model, SteamOS and client version, host operating system, GPU encoder, display settings, game, and calibration. Do not assume that enabling HDR on the monitor automatically produces a plug-and-play HDR image on every Deck.

How do controller input and Steam Deck controls differ?

Steam Remote Play input

Steam Input and the Deck’s controls are part of the Steam workflow. Valve’s Steam Deck FAQ states: “Steam Input should not add additional latency.” That is Valve’s documented expectation, not an independent latency measurement. Valve also notes that combining gyro with a joystick or trackpad can suit camera and cursor control.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Sunshine input emulation

Sunshine’s Windows documentation lists Xbox 360 and DualShock 4 emulation through the limited ViGEmBus alternative. Its optional Virtual HID Broker can expose additional gamepad types and features, but an active paid machine license is required for that option. Sunshine also notes that the ViGEmBus project has reached end of life. These are host configuration considerations; they do not prove that Moonlight input is faster or slower than Steam Remote Play.

Can I use either method for non-Steam games?

Steam Remote Play

Valve says all Steam games can be streamed between a user’s computers. Non-Steam games may work, but Valve does not officially support them in the same way. Launchers, overlays, anti-cheat systems, and games that require special startup behavior can prevent a reliable session.

Moonlight and Sunshine

Sunshine’s manual application entries and desktop streaming broaden what you can launch. You can add a program, open the desktop, and start a launcher from there. That flexibility does not guarantee compatibility with every launcher, anti-cheat system, or game; some software may block capture, reject virtual input, or require an interaction that is awkward from a streamed desktop.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Which option should you choose?

Choose Steam Remote Play first when

  • Your games are already in the Steam Library.
  • You want the shortest setup and a launch button directly in the Deck Library.
  • You rely on Steam Input, gyro, trackpads, or other integrated Deck controls.
  • You prefer Steam’s built-in bandwidth, quality, capture-resolution, and performance-overlay controls.

Choose Moonlight with Sunshine when

  • You need to stream non-Steam applications or the entire desktop.
  • You want to add programs manually instead of depending on Steam’s Library integration.
  • You need explicit host configuration and are prepared to troubleshoot more components.
  • HDR configuration is a priority and your host GPU, operating system, display, and client meet the documented requirements.

Try both when latency decides the purchase

Install both on the same Deck and test them on the same host and network. Keep the host wired, use the same game and display conditions, and use the available diagnostics. There is no official documentation establishing one universal winner for Steam Deck latency or smoothness.

What you need before starting

  • A gaming PC capable of running the game locally, with Steam for Remote Play or Sunshine for Moonlight.
  • A Steam Deck with Steam signed in for Remote Play, or Moonlight installed for the Sunshine workflow.
  • A home router and a stable connection between host and Deck.
  • Ethernet for the host whenever practical and strong 5 GHz Wi-Fi for the Deck when using Moonlight’s recommended arrangement.
  • For HDR, a compatible host GPU encoder, operating-system HDR mode, display path, client support, and calibration.

No subscription or specific accessory is required by the cited setup instructions. A cable or newer router is an optional network remedy, not a universal prerequisite.
