Steam Remote Play streams a game running on one computer to another device. The host does the processing, while the client receives the game’s audio and video and sends controls back. Steam has two different modes: Remote Play Anywhere lets one user play their own library remotely; Remote Play Together lets a host invite friends into a supported local-multiplayer game. The hardware, ownership and network implications differ, so choose the section that matches how you plan to play.
How Steam Remote Play works
Remote Play does not move the game installation or execution to the client. The host computer launches and runs the game. Steam captures the host’s game video and audio, encodes the stream, and sends it to the client device. Your controller, keyboard, mouse or touch input travels in the opposite direction so the host can act on it. In a multiplayer session, voice communication can also travel over the connection.
The host therefore needs to be able to start and run the game normally before streaming begins. The client mainly needs to decode the video smoothly and provide a usable display and input method. This division explains why a modest tablet can play a demanding PC game while the host remains a gaming-class computer.
Remote Play Anywhere vs. Remote Play Together
| Question | Remote Play Anywhere | Remote Play Together |
|---|---|---|
| Who is playing? | The same Steam user plays from another computer or Steam Link-compatible device. | A host plays with invited Steam friends in a supported local-multiplayer session. |
| Who owns and runs the game? | The user’s host computer owns or otherwise has access to the game and runs it. | The host runs the game. An invited friend can join without owning or launching it. |
| What games work? | Games that run correctly on the host and can be streamed. | Games whose Steam store pages identify Remote Play Together support or suitability for Steam Link app streaming. |
| VR support | Steam Link can stream VR games to compatible headsets. | Valve explicitly does not support Remote Play Together for VR. |
For a Together invitation, open a supported game on the host, invite a Steam friend through the Friends interface, and follow the in-game prompt. The friend does not need to install or launch the game separately, but the title must support the feature. Store-page labels are the reliable way to check a particular game; support can differ between titles.

What do I need to host Steam Remote Play?
Host computer
- Valve’s Steam Remote Play FAQ recommends “a minimum of a quad-core CPU for the computer running the game.” This is a baseline recommendation, not a guarantee that every game will stream well.
- The game must already launch and play correctly on the host. Remote Play does not bypass the game’s own CPU, GPU, RAM or operating-system requirements.
- Keep Steam current on both computers and sign in as required for the mode you selected. Valve’s current requirements and troubleshooting steps are documented in Steam Remote Play support.
Client device
Client requirements are more modest. Valve says the client should have a GPU that supports hardware-accelerated H.264 decoding; a recent laptop or PC should generally meet the client requirement. Phones, tablets, televisions and headsets have their own app and operating-system constraints, so do not assume that a device capable of running the Steam Link app has identical requirements to a Windows or macOS computer.
Account and software checklist
- Install the latest Steam client on the host and on the computer used as the client, or install the current Steam Link app on the target device.
- Sign in to the appropriate Steam account. Anywhere uses the user’s account on both ends; Together uses the host’s account to launch the game and invite a Steam friend.
- Launch the game locally on the host once. Resolve crashes, missing drivers or controller problems before attempting to stream.
- Open Steam’s Remote Play settings and confirm that Remote Play is enabled on the host.
- Connect the client to the host, select the game, and test input and audio before starting a long session.
Which devices support Steam Link?
Valve’s Steam Remote Play feature page currently lists Steam Link support for the following device families:

App availability, minimum operating-system versions and headset compatibility can change. Check the current listings and requirements on Steam Remote Play and the relevant Steam Support page before buying or configuring a device. A platform appearing in the product list does not mean every game, controller or Remote Play mode works identically on it.
What are the requirements for Steam Link VR streaming?
VR streaming has a separate, more demanding requirement set. Valve’s Steam Link headset requirements specify this baseline for the listed Windows VR use case:
- Windows 10 or newer.
- NVIDIA GTX 970 or better, or AMD RX 570 or better. AMD RX 6400 and RX 6500 XT are excluded because they lack the required hardware encode capability.
- A router meeting at least the 5 GHz Wi-Fi 5 level.
- A compatible, supported headset model and the software version specified by Valve for that headset.
Valve’s recommendations for this VR scenario include 16 GB of RAM, a stronger graphics card than the minimum and Wi-Fi 6 or Wi-Fi 6E. These are VR-app requirements and recommendations, not universal requirements for ordinary Remote Play to a phone, television or computer. Remote Play Together remains unavailable for VR even though Steam Link can stream VR games to compatible headsets.

How should I configure my network?
Start with the host’s connection
Valve’s network guide says, “We highly recommend making sure your computer is directly connected to the router with Ethernet.” A wired host-to-router link avoids one wireless hop and is the preferred starting point. A generic Ethernet cable is optional equipment, not a universal requirement; some homes and clients cannot be wired, and a cable alone cannot correct every router or internet problem.

If Wi-Fi is unavoidable
- Prefer 5 GHz Wi-Fi over congested 2.4 GHz where range and walls permit.
- Choose a less congested wireless channel.
- Reduce stream quality or maximum capture resolution in Steam Remote Play settings if video becomes choppy.
- Avoid placing the host, router or client behind sources of interference, and reduce competing traffic during play.
When both the host and client use Wi-Fi through the same router, they contend for the same airtime. Valve identifies that arrangement as a common cause of stutter. Wiring the host first usually removes the most important source of contention; wiring the client as well can help where practical.
Networks that commonly fail
Valve’s Steam Link network guidance warns that public, workplace, school or university, guest, gateway-login and client-isolated networks are unsupported or likely to block a connection. These networks may prevent devices from discovering each other or restrict the traffic Remote Play needs. Test on a private home network before changing game settings.

Which ports does Steam Remote Play use?
Valve’s Remote Play FAQ lists UDP ports 27031 and 27036 and TCP ports 27036 and 27037. The network guide additionally lists UDP ports 10400 and 10401 for VR streaming. Port behavior can change, and firewall or router rules differ by network. Most home users should first allow Steam through the operating system firewall and test; do not manually open every port or expose a computer to the internet simply because a list exists. Consult Valve’s current Remote Play support and Steam Link network settings pages when a specific firewall or router error identifies a blocked port.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How much data does Steam Remote Play use?
Valve does not publish one universal bandwidth minimum or a standard gigabytes-per-hour figure for ordinary Remote Play. Actual network use changes with the stream’s capture resolution, quality settings, game imagery and other session conditions. Do not substitute Steam’s requirements for watching prerecorded video; those figures do not describe an interactive Remote Play stream.

You can manage the connection rather than rely on an invented data estimate. In Steam’s Remote Play settings, limit the available bandwidth and lower the maximum capture resolution or stream quality when a capped connection is at risk. Start with conservative settings, then raise quality until latency or stutter appears. Your router or internet provider’s usage meter is the appropriate way to measure consumption for your own setup.
Does Remote Play let someone access my whole computer?
Yes, Valve’s Remote Play FAQ says access to the host computer extends beyond the game being streamed. Valve also notes that, because the same Steam account is logged in on both computers, it assumes the user has full access to both computers. Treat the host as a trusted machine and avoid leaving unrelated sensitive applications open during a session.
You can disable the feature in Steam’s Remote Play settings when it is not needed. This guidance establishes the access scope; it does not establish any particular Valve data-retention, telemetry or encryption policy.
Remote Play troubleshooting by symptom
The client cannot find the host
- Confirm that both devices are on the same private network for a local connection and that Steam is running on the host.
- Disable guest-network or client-isolation features on the router.
- Allow Steam through the host firewall, then retry before changing port rules.
- Update Steam on both ends and verify that Remote Play is enabled on the host.
Video is blurry or stutters
- Connect the host directly to the router with Ethernet if possible.
- Move a wireless client to 5 GHz, select a less congested channel and reduce competing traffic.
- Lower capture resolution or bandwidth in Remote Play settings.
- Check whether the host is already overloaded running the game; streaming adds capture and encoding work.
Input or audio does not work
- Reconnect the controller or input device after the stream starts and test another supported input method.
- Check that the host game has focus and that its local audio output is not muted.
- For Together, verify that the game supports the feature and that the invited friend joined through the Steam invitation rather than launching an unsupported mode.
VR will not connect
Check the VR-specific Windows, GPU, router, headset and software requirements instead of applying ordinary Remote Play assumptions. In particular, RX 6400 and RX 6500 XT graphics cards are excluded by Valve’s VR requirements, and Remote Play Together cannot be used for VR.
What to verify before a long session
- The host launches the game normally and meets at least Valve’s quad-core CPU recommendation.
- The client can hardware-decode H.264 and is running a currently supported Steam Link app or Steam client.
- Steam is updated and the correct account is signed in for Anywhere or Together.
- The host is wired to the router when practical; otherwise Wi-Fi uses 5 GHz with a clear channel.
- Bandwidth and capture-resolution limits match your connection or data cap.
- Everyone understands that host-computer access extends beyond the streamed game.
For current device lists, software minimums, port details and mode-specific changes, use Valve’s Steam Remote Play feature page, Remote Play FAQ and network settings guide as the final reference.
