Steam Client Beta now shows desktop Linux users an unsupported dialog when installing a game that Valve knows does not work with Proton. The warning is a stronger signal than an ordinary compatibility rating, but it is not a universal verdict on Linux gaming—and the absence of a warning is not a guarantee that a game will run.
What Steam changed
Valve’s Steam Client Beta release notes add an installation-time warning for desktop Linux. When Valve has identified that a title does not work with Proton, Steam displays the same unsupported dialog used on SteamOS: “On Desktop Linux we will now show the SteamOS unsupported dialog when installing games that are known to not work with Proton.”
The release note describes a beta-channel change. It does not give a date for when the dialog will reach every user of the stable Steam client, so availability can differ by client channel and rollout status.

The same Linux section says the compatibility-tool selector is always visible. Steam puts the recommended compatibility tool—or a native game’s Steam Runtime—at the top and labels it Default. The selector also supports aliases such as Proton Stable, making the available choices easier to understand.

What Proton does
Proton is Valve’s modified distribution of Wine for running Windows game titles on Linux through Steam Play. Valve describes Proton as including Vulkan-based implementations of Direct3D 11 and Direct3D 12, bridges for Steamworks and OpenVR, fullscreen and gamepad improvements, and the esync patchset. Valve says these Wine improvements were designed and funded in a joint development effort with CodeWeavers.
Because Proton translates and adapts Windows software rather than turning it into a native Linux build, compatibility depends on how a game uses graphics APIs, launchers, copy protection and online services. Valve specifically cautions that games using complex digital-rights-management systems or anti-cheat systems may be difficult or impossible to support.

How to interpret the unsupported dialog
It is a known-Proton incompatibility signal
The dialog means Valve has identified the current Proton route as not working for that game. Treat it as a practical stop sign before downloading or buying, particularly if you need the title to work without troubleshooting.

First determine which build you are dealing with. A game may have a native Linux build, or Steam may be preparing the Windows build to run through Proton. The warning described in the beta notes concerns a game known not to work with Proton; it should not be read as a statement that every possible Linux build, distribution or future update is unusable.

No warning does not mean guaranteed compatibility
Valve’s support guidance describes Steam Play as potentially able to run Windows-only games on Linux, while also stating that compatibility is not guaranteed. Proton versions, game updates, graphics drivers, launchers, DRM and anti-cheat policies can change the result. Valve also warns that manually searching for games supported by the Linux Steam client does not guarantee correct results.
Desktop Linux, SteamOS and Steam Deck are not the same signal
This feature targets the desktop Linux client, even though it reuses the SteamOS unsupported dialog. Reusing that interface does not turn a desktop installation into SteamOS and does not mean the computer is being evaluated under Steam Deck’s hardware or verification rules.

For a desktop Linux user, the relevant question is whether the Windows build is expected to work through Proton. For a SteamOS or Steam Deck user, an unsupported dialog may be part of the platform’s own compatibility and verification presentation. Keep those contexts separate when reading community reports or troubleshooting advice.

What to do when Steam shows the warning
- Check the build. Confirm whether the store offers a native Linux version or whether Steam is using the Windows version with Proton.
- Assume the current Proton path will fail. The warning is based on a known incompatibility, so do not plan on a normal installation working without a change in the game, Proton, or its online-service requirements.
- Check current reports before spending money or time. Look for recent player reports and the developer’s stated position on anti-cheat and DRM. Reports can become outdated after a game or Proton update, so pay attention to dates and the exact game version.
- Review the compatibility selector. Steam keeps the selector visible and places its recommended tool or native Steam Runtime first as Default. You can inspect the available Proton aliases, including labels such as Proton Stable, rather than assuming every listed tool has the same behavior.
- Only experiment if you accept failure. Selecting a different Proton version may be useful for a title that has changed since Valve’s detection, but it cannot fix an unsupported anti-cheat service, an incompatible DRM system or a server-side policy. A forced launch attempt can still fail, crash, or leave you unable to join online play.
Native Linux versus Proton: the practical difference

Why anti-cheat and DRM matter so much
Proton can translate many graphics and platform calls, but it cannot unilaterally make a game’s security service trust a compatibility layer. Kernel-level or otherwise restricted anti-cheat components may refuse to run, while DRM and launchers can depend on Windows behavior that Proton cannot reproduce reliably. That is why a game can be sold on Steam yet remain unsuitable for Linux through Proton.

These limits also explain why changing Proton versions is not a universal remedy. A newer or older tool can address a regression or a game-specific bug, but it cannot override a developer’s anti-cheat decision or a DRM system that blocks the environment.
How reliable is Steam’s information?
The new dialog is useful because it records a known incompatibility at the point where you install the game. It is more actionable than treating a generic Linux search result as proof of support. However, it remains a point-in-time signal. Compatibility can change after a Proton release, a game patch, a driver update or a change in an online service.
Use the warning as a reason to stop and verify, not as evidence that Linux gaming as a whole is impossible. Conversely, proceed cautiously when no warning appears: Steam’s own guidance says Steam Play compatibility is potential rather than guaranteed.
