Choose Steam Next Fest when you want a concentrated, weeklong event full of demos for upcoming PC releases. Choose itch.io when you want an always-available stream of independent, experimental, browser-playable, DRM-free, or creator-led projects. Neither platform is proven to have more or better demos overall; they solve different discovery problems.
The short answer
Steam Next Fest is a scheduled promotion built around a large batch of upcoming games. Valve describes it as a weeklong event focused on promoting upcoming games with playable demos. Participating developers can also host livestreams and chats, while Steam groups games through registration categories, store tags, recommendations and wishlists.
itch.io is an open marketplace for independent digital creators. It operates continuously rather than as a festival. A project can be free, pay-what-you-want or paid; its creator controls the project page, files and presentation. Games may run in a browser, offer downloadable builds, or use the itch app for installation and updates, depending on the project.

Steam Next Fest: a time-boxed event
Next Fest gathers participating games into a defined festival window. The event’s start and end dates, registration rules and developer deadlines vary by edition, so use the dates shown for the specific festival you plan to attend. During the event, you can browse a large organized batch instead of searching the store one project at a time.
Steam’s event presentation is designed for sampling. The official press-preview guidance says players can hover over a game, choose the button to install its playable demo, try many demos and add promising games to a wishlist for launch notifications. The same event ecosystem includes developer livestreams and chats, giving you a way to see a game in motion or hear directly from its team.
itch.io: an always-on marketplace
itch.io has no single festival window that controls discovery. New projects, updates and bundles can appear at any time, and older demos remain available unless a creator removes or changes them. The site’s open-marketplace model gives creators control over how their pages look and how they distribute files.
Discovery tools include staff picks, a randomizer, personalized recommendations, jams and browse-page feeds. The platform’s API documentation exposes RSS feeds for browse pages, which can help you follow a chosen category or filter in a feed reader. Because projects remain discoverable outside a fixed event, itch.io is suited to building a personal queue over weeks or months.

itch.io’s signal comes from several smaller systems rather than one standardized event. No official apples-to-apples count or quality score establishes that either service has more or better free demos. Treat “better” as a question of curation style and your own tolerance for browsing, not as a proven platform-wide ranking.

What you are likely to find in Next Fest
Next Fest emphasizes games that are heading toward release on Steam. The demo is usually a preview of a planned commercial product, so the format is useful when you want to decide which future releases deserve a wishlist, a launch-day purchase or more coverage on your personal radar.
Because the event is organized around upcoming games, the catalog is less focused on finished freeware, prototypes or projects that have no commercial launch plan. Its strength is concentration around a specific type of question: “Which forthcoming Steam games should I watch?”

itch.io spans free projects, pay-what-you-want releases, paid games, browser games, experimental work and other digital formats supplied by independent creators. A project may be a polished commercial demo, a short freeware game, a prototype from a jam or a complete game offered for free.

You can look for a browser game when you do not want to install anything, choose a downloadable project when you want offline play, or search for a creator whose work you already enjoy. The trade-off is that there is no single release horizon or event deadline to tell you which projects are the newest or most important.
How to find and install demos on Steam Next Fest
- Open the current Next Fest event page during its published dates. Event dates and participation rules are edition-specific, so verify that the festival is active before troubleshooting a missing demo.
- Start with a category or store tag. Use the event’s registration categories and Steam tags to reduce a large catalog to genres, formats or themes you actually want to play.
- Open a game’s event listing and inspect the preview. Look for the game’s description, screenshots and any scheduled livestream or chat information before installing.
- Choose the playable-demo install control. Steam’s press-preview instructions describe hovering over a game and using the install-demo button. The download then uses Steam’s normal library and installation flow.
- Keep a shortlist while you play. Add games you want to follow to your wishlist. This separates “interesting enough to try” from “I want a launch notification.”
- Return before the event closes. A Next Fest demo’s visibility is tied to the event schedule. If a game matters to you, install or play it while the festival is running rather than assuming the same event page will remain unchanged.
If an event demo will not install
- Confirm that the event’s published window has not ended.
- Open the individual game listing rather than relying only on a search result.
- Check whether the developer has enabled a playable demo for the participating edition.
- Make sure Steam is signed in and has enough storage for the download.
- If the game offers a livestream but no install control, treat the stream as viewing content rather than proof that a playable demo is currently available.
How to find and play demos on itch.io
- Choose a discovery route. Browse a category, use staff picks, try the randomizer, follow personalized recommendations, explore a jam or subscribe to a browse-page RSS feed.
- Read the project page before downloading. Check whether the creator offers a browser build, downloadable files, a free demo, a complete free game or a paid project with a free preview.
- Inspect the available platform files. itch.io projects can provide platform-specific downloads. Confirm that the page includes a build for your operating system before starting a large download.
- Play in the browser when offered. A browser option can avoid installation, but it is available only when the creator has supplied a browser build and it works with your browser and hardware.
- Download from the project page or use the itch app. The itch app downloads, installs, updates and runs games and software from itch.io on Windows, macOS and Linux. Use it when you want one place to manage multiple installed projects.
- Check the creator’s instructions after installation. Controls, save locations, required runtimes and known issues are project-specific, so the page’s notes are more authoritative than a generic platform assumption.
How creators mark a free demo
For creators, itch.io says a separate demo page is unnecessary. They can upload the demo to an existing project page and tick the “This file is a demo and can be downloaded for free” checkbox. As a player, this means the demo may appear alongside other files on the main project page rather than under a separate product listing.
Browser, DRM and download expectations
Some itch.io projects run in a browser; others require a download. Some are offered without digital-rights-management restrictions, but that depends on the individual project and its files. Check the page for the creator’s stated format instead of assuming every itch.io title is browser-playable or DRM-free.

Valve’s June 2026 press-preview material described participating games as planning to offer a free demo and directed players to the install-demo control. That applies to the playable preview during the event; it does not establish that the complete game will be free at launch.

itch.io
itch.io lets a creator set a project’s minimum price to zero and accept optional support from fans. Other projects can be pay-what-you-want or paid, and a paid project may still include a free demo. Read the price and file labels on the specific project page before downloading or purchasing.
itch.io’s pricing documentation reproduces a historical figure from a 2015 blog post: 30% of money spent on the platform was described as “extra” money above the minimum, and the average purchase was about $1.50 above that minimum. This is historical marketplace context, not a current platform-wide measurement and not a prediction of what any particular demo or full game will cost.
Safety and trust when downloading
itch.io is an open marketplace, so project pages are controlled by individual creators. That openness is useful for small and experimental work, but it means you should evaluate each download on its own terms. Prefer files clearly labeled for your operating system, read the creator’s instructions and comments, and scan unfamiliar downloads with the security tools you already trust. A browser build can reduce the need to install a file, but it is still subject to the project’s own implementation and your browser’s security settings.

You do not have to pick one platform permanently. Use each where its structure is strongest:
- During Next Fest, make a time-limited shortlist. Filter by tags, install demos that match your interests and wishlist the games you may want at launch.
- After the festival, use itch.io for breadth. Explore staff picks, jams, recommendations and the randomizer when you want projects that are not tied to a major release schedule.
- Separate previews from complete games. Record whether each item is a demo, a finished free release, pay-what-you-want or a paid game with a free sample.
- Choose the least-friction format. Use a browser build when you want a quick trial, Steam installation when the title is part of your future-release watchlist, or the itch app when you expect to keep several itch.io projects installed.
This workflow avoids the false choice between event-scale sampling and long-tail exploration: Next Fest supplies a focused burst, while itch.io supplies an ongoing source of independent experiments.
What the evidence can—and cannot—prove
The platforms publish descriptions of their features, but there is no official apples-to-apples measurement showing that one has a larger total of free demos or a higher average demo quality. Counts also change as projects are added, removed or updated. A claim that one platform has “the best” demos therefore depends on the reader’s goal: upcoming Steam releases, independent experimentation, browser access, persistent discovery or structured event programming.
