If a Steam Next Fest demo is running poorly, first lower its resolution or internal render scale, then reduce demanding graphics options one at a time and retest the same scene. Use an upscaler only if that demo offers one. Treat frame-rate caps and V-Sync as display and frame-pacing choices, not guaranteed ways to raise FPS. There is no universal preset: each demo, PC and display can behave differently.
Why there is no universal Next Fest performance preset
Steam Next Fest is a weeklong event for upcoming games with playable demos, and it recurs three times a year. The event itself does not supply one graphics profile for those games. Each demo is an individual game, with its own settings, performance characteristics and developer guidance.
That distinction matters when troubleshooting: a menu option available in one demo may not exist in another, and a setting that helps one game may have little effect in a different one. Hardware and game engines also differ, so no particular graphics option is guaranteed to be the bottleneck on every PC. Steam Support’s general performance guidance is straightforward: increasing resolution or raising video options beyond recommended settings can immediately reduce FPS. It does not establish a universal FPS gain from changing any one setting.
Use the demo’s own graphics menu and instructions as the authority for options it actually supports. Change one demanding setting at a time, compare the result in the same scene, and keep a change only if the improved play is worth any loss in image quality.

Start with a repeatable test
Before changing several options, choose a repeatable part of the demo: a stationary view, a specific area, or a brief sequence you can replay. Observe whether the problem is low or inconsistent FPS, distracting tearing, or an image that looks too soft after a change. You do not need to assume a particular cause in advance. A controlled comparison helps show whether a setting made a difference on your system.
- Open the demo’s graphics or video settings. Menu names and available controls vary by game.
- Note the current settings. If a change makes the image or performance worse, restore the previous value before testing another option.
- Change one option. Start with resolution or render scale if performance is poor, then try graphics quality controls.
- Replay the same scene. Compare both smoothness and visual clarity under similar conditions.
- Keep, adjust or revert the change. A setting is useful only if its tradeoff is acceptable to you.
Changing one option at a time is a practical way to isolate cause and effect; it is not a promise that every difference will be easy to notice. If the demo has its own recommended preset, it can be a starting reference, but the result still depends on the game and hardware.
Which settings to change first
Resolution and render scale
When FPS is low, try lowering the output resolution if the game offers that option. A lower resolution can reduce the work the GPU has to do, but it can also make the image less sharp. If the demo provides an internal render-scale control, lowering it is another way to reduce the resolution at which the game renders. The display resolution and internal render scale are distinct controls when both are present; follow the demo’s own labels and explanation rather than assuming how a particular scale value is implemented.

Options and behavior are game-specific. Capcom’s Steam announcement for one PC demo, for example, describes that game’s own graphics choices, including resolution scaling. Those particular options should not be treated as a menu template for other Next Fest demos. If you lower a scale or resolution and the image becomes too soft, try a less aggressive change or restore the previous setting.
Graphics quality and individual effects
If lowering resolution or render scale is not an acceptable tradeoff, reduce the demo’s graphics quality gradually. A preset such as Low, Medium or High, if provided, gives you a simple starting point. If the game exposes individual options instead, use its own labels and lower one at a time. The available controls and their performance effects differ; there is no evidence-backed rule that a particular effect is always the largest FPS bottleneck.
After each change, return to the same test scene. If performance does not improve enough to justify the visual difference, restore that option and try another. Avoid dropping every setting at once: doing so makes it difficult to identify which change helped and which only reduced image quality.

Upscaling and frame generation
Some demos may offer an upscaler such as FSR or another reconstruction option; others may not. If one is available, compare the modes the game provides on your own system. The choice is a tradeoff between image quality and performance, and the useful setting depends on the demo and how its modes look in motion and in the scenes you care about.

A developer’s recommendation to use FSR or frame generation for a particular game is advice for that title, not a general instruction for all demos. Check the specific game’s documentation or menu before relying on either feature. If an option is absent, there is no setting to enable through a universal Steam Next Fest profile.
Frame-rate caps, refresh rate and V-Sync
FPS describes how many frames the game produces; refresh rate describes how often the display updates. They are related, but they are not the same measure. Steam Support explains that disabling V-Sync can lead to tearing or other artifacts. Whether V-Sync is preferable depends on how the demo behaves on your display and which visual tradeoff you find more acceptable.

A frame-rate cap limits the game’s output to a chosen rate when the game offers that control. It can be useful as a frame-pacing choice, but neither a cap nor V-Sync is a guaranteed FPS booster. They affect how frames are delivered or synchronized, and changing them may alter the experience without improving the game’s underlying performance.

Test these controls after addressing the game’s resolution and quality settings if low FPS is the main problem. Change one choice, play the same scene, and decide based on the result rather than treating V-Sync or a particular cap as a mandatory setting.

Steam allows launch options that can change how a game starts or behaves, but graphics commands are not universal. Steam’s launch-options guidance includes commands that apply only to games built on GoldSrc or Source. A command found in a general list may therefore do nothing in a third-party demo, or may not be supported by that title.

Use a launch option only when the specific game’s documentation says it supports that option. Do not paste generic graphics commands into a demo as a substitute for settings in the game’s own menu. If you have already added a command and the game behaves unexpectedly, remove the unsupported option and test the demo again.
A practical troubleshooting order
- Confirm the symptom. Decide whether you are trying to address low FPS, inconsistent frame delivery, tearing, or softness in the image. These are different problems and may call for different adjustments.
- Try resolution or render scale. Lower one control if available, then compare the same scene. Keep the change only if its performance benefit is worth the loss of clarity.
- Adjust graphics quality gradually. Try the game’s own preset or lower an individual demanding option, one at a time. Revert changes that do not help enough.
- Check for supported upscaling. If the demo offers an upscaler or frame generation, compare its available modes and consult the game’s instructions. Do not assume another demo supports the same feature.
- Evaluate frame pacing and synchronization. Compare a frame-rate cap or V-Sync behavior on your display, paying attention to tearing and perceived smoothness rather than expecting a guaranteed FPS increase.
- Use launch options only with title-specific instructions. If the game’s documentation does not confirm support for a command, leave it out.
- Escalate game-specific issues to the game’s support team. Steam advises contacting the game’s support team if resolution problems remain unresolved, since configurations vary by developer.
What to expect from the result
There is no source-backed percentage improvement or FPS figure that applies across Next Fest demos and PCs. A lower resolution or less demanding video setting is a reasonable first troubleshooting step, but the result may differ from one game or system to another. Upscaling, render scaling and frame generation are options only when the particular demo supports them.
The useful outcome is not a setting that wins for everyone. It is a configuration that makes the demo playable on your system while preserving the image quality and display behavior you prefer. If a tradeoff is not worthwhile, restore the previous setting; the game’s own controls and documentation are more reliable than a universal checklist.
