Choose Steam Deck if you want portable play and the option to connect to a TV or monitor later. Choose Steam Machine if you want a dedicated SteamOS computer for a fixed television or desk and prefer the higher hardware class Valve lists. The right choice depends on where you play, the display you already own, the games you need to run, and the cost of the complete setup—not just the device.
Steam Machine vs. Steam Deck at a glance
These are not two versions of the same form factor. Steam Deck is a handheld PC with a built-in screen, controls and battery. Steam Machine is a compact PC designed to stay connected to a television or monitor and an AC outlet. Both use SteamOS, but they solve different problems.

What Steam Deck is—and what Steam Machine is not
Steam Deck: a handheld PC that can become a console
The Steam Deck OLED combines a screen, controls, computer, battery and storage in one device. You can play on a sofa, in bed, while travelling or anywhere you can safely carry it. Its USB-C port also supports an external display, so the same library can appear on a television or monitor.
#1 Best Overall

- 4K@120Hz HDMI Output (Upgraded): Experience double the refresh rate compared to the previous 4K@60Hz version. Whether you’re battling online or watching cinematic cut-scenes, enjoy buttery-smooth gameplay and reduced screen tearing on external monitors.
- Full-Speed 100W Charging: Supports up to 100W PD charging, easily powering your handheld in Turbo Mode. Keeps your gaming sessions uninterrupted — no need to worry about battery drain even during marathon play. Note: The ROG Ally's 30W Turbo Mode is fully supported, but a 100W charger is recommended.
- Gigabit Ethernet: Enhance your gaming with gigabit Ethernet for seamless online play, rapid updates, and quick file transfers. Enjoy lightning-fast downloads and uploads, eliminating lag and latency for uninterrupted sessions.
- Expanded Device Compatibility: Now works with Steam Deck LCD/OLED, ROG Ally / Ally X, Legion Go / Go S, and MSI Claw — making it your all-in-one solution across multiple handhelds. NOTE: Not for ROG XBOX Ally / XBOX Ally X.
That flexibility comes with handheld compromises. The integrated display is much smaller than a television, battery life changes with the game and settings, and the Deck’s processor and graphics hardware are designed around portable power and heat limits. Docking improves connectivity and screen size, but it does not add a faster CPU or GPU.
Steam Machine: a dedicated SteamOS living-room or desk PC
Steam Machine has no built-in screen, controls or battery. You place it near a TV or monitor, connect power and video, then use a controller, keyboard and mouse, or another compatible input device. It is closer to a compact desktop than to a handheld console.
This arrangement is useful when the machine will remain in one room. You can connect it to a large display, wired network and several USB peripherals without adding a dock. It is less convenient if you want to play away from that display or move the system frequently.

The component lists indicate a major performance-class difference, especially for CPU-heavy games, higher resolutions and demanding graphics settings. They do not, by themselves, establish a frame rate for a particular title. Game engine, resolution, graphics preset, driver, shader compilation and patches all matter.
How much faster is Steam Machine?
Valve’s Steam Machine page says it has “over six times the horsepower of Steam Deck.” That is a Valve marketing statement, not an independent benchmark, and the page also warns that some specifications may change before availability. Treat the phrase as an indication of the intended product tier rather than a promise that every game will run at exactly six times the frame rate.
The listed Zen 4 processor, RDNA3 graphics with 28 compute units and separate GDDR6 video memory place Steam Machine above the Deck OLED’s Zen 2 and RDNA 2 design on paper. The advantage is most relevant when you want to drive a large external display, use higher graphics settings, run CPU-intensive simulations or leave more headroom for future games.
Steam Deck’s lower power target is not automatically a disadvantage. At its native 1280 × 800 display resolution, its hardware has fewer pixels to render than a 1440p or 4K television. Many games also offer console-style presets that work well on the handheld. If you mainly play at the Deck’s native resolution, paying for a more powerful fixed system may not improve the experience enough to justify the extra equipment.

Display, portability and power
Handheld play
The Deck OLED’s 7.4-inch, 1280 × 800 screen is the complete display solution. Valve lists refresh up to 90 Hz. The 50 Wh battery is rated for 3–12 hours of gameplay, but that is an estimate whose result depends on the game, brightness, frame rate, wireless use and other conditions. A demanding 3D title can consume power far faster than a lightweight 2D game.
Television and monitor play
Steam Machine is designed around an external display, so budget space and inputs for a TV or monitor as well as the computer. Its HDMI 2.0 and DisplayPort 1.4 outputs allow you to select a display that matches your preferred resolution and refresh rate. The machine remains connected to AC power.
A docked Steam Deck can also use a large screen. Valve’s Steam Deck Docking Station provides HDMI 2.0, DisplayPort 1.4, three USB-A ports, Gigabit Ethernet and power passthrough. Valve states support for up to 4K at 60 Hz or 1440p at 120 Hz on external displays. Those are output capabilities, not a guarantee that every game will render at those settings.
Moving between rooms
Deck is the practical choice if you expect to undock, carry the system to another room or play during travel. Steam Machine can be moved, but each new location needs a display, power and input devices. If you already have multiple TVs and want one permanent system, that limitation may not matter.
How to use Steam Deck on a TV or monitor
Docking gives Deck a console-like setup without buying a second gaming computer. The dock is optional; the handheld itself remains the same hardware whether it is in your hands or connected to a display.
- Connect the dock’s power supply and place the Deck into the dock’s USB-C connection.
- Run an HDMI or DisplayPort cable from the dock to the matching input on your TV or monitor.
- Connect a controller, keyboard or mouse through USB, Bluetooth or another supported connection. Plug wired network equipment into the dock’s Ethernet port if you prefer it over Wi-Fi.
- Select the correct input on the display, then wake the Deck. SteamOS should detect the external screen.
- In the display settings, choose the resolution and refresh rate your screen supports. Start with the native mode; lower the resolution or refresh rate if a game struggles.
- Launch the game and adjust its own graphics settings separately. External-display output does not increase the Deck’s processing power.
Check the ports on your particular monitor or television before buying cables. A display may accept HDMI but not DisplayPort, or may reserve its highest refresh rate for a specific input. Also confirm that your controller and other USB devices have the connectors or adapters they require.
SteamOS and game compatibility
Both products use SteamOS, Valve’s Linux-based operating system. Proton provides a compatibility layer for many Windows games, and Steam’s compatibility labels are intended to indicate how a title behaves on supported hardware. A label is useful evidence, not a substitute for checking the exact game you intend to play.

Before choosing either device, make a short list of your must-play titles and inspect each one’s current Steam compatibility information. Pay particular attention to multiplayer games with anti-cheat systems, launchers, unusual video codecs, virtual-reality requirements and software that depends on Windows-only utilities. Updates can improve or break compatibility, so status is not permanent.
Valve’s SteamOS page currently identifies Steam Deck and Legion Go S as officially supported devices on that page, while the Steam Machine product page describes Steam Machine as running SteamOS. Support programs and labels can change; verify the device-specific status close to purchase on Valve’s SteamOS information page and the individual game listing.
What the complete setup requires
Comparing only the two computer boxes can make the Steam Machine appear more or less expensive than it really is. List every part you need in the room where you will play.
- Display: Deck includes one; Steam Machine needs a TV or monitor with a suitable input.
- Controls: Deck includes integrated controls. Steam Machine needs a controller, keyboard and mouse, or another compatible input device.
- Power: Deck can run from its battery but needs charging for long sessions. Steam Machine needs a permanent AC connection.
- Storage: Compare the listed 512 GB, 1 TB and 2 TB configurations with the size of your library. Both devices provide a microSD slot, but game load times and available capacity can vary by storage choice.
- Network: Both can use wireless networking; wired Gigabit Ethernet is available through the Deck dock or on Steam Machine.
- Cables and adapters: Confirm HDMI or DisplayPort cable requirements, USB connector types and whether your display needs an adapter.
- Room layout: Measure shelf space, cable distance and ventilation. A fixed PC near a TV needs airflow and an accessible power outlet.
Regional pricing, taxes, shipping and ordering availability can change. Check the product pages for your country and calculate the complete setup rather than comparing a handheld configuration with a bare computer connected to equipment you do not already own.

Choose Steam Deck for portable-first gaming
- You want to play away from a desk or television.
- You value one integrated device with built-in controls and a screen.
- You are comfortable managing battery life and using the native 1280 × 800 display.
- You want the option to dock later instead of committing to a fixed setup now.
Deck is also the safer choice when your household has no spare TV or monitor. It works immediately as a self-contained system, and a dock can be added when a larger screen becomes useful.
Choose Steam Machine for a permanent big-screen setup
- You primarily play from a sofa or desk and already have a suitable display.
- You want the higher hardware class Valve lists for demanding games or higher-resolution output.
- You prefer a wired network, several USB peripherals and no battery-management routine.
- You do not need to carry the computer between rooms.
Steam Machine makes more sense when the room is already organized like a console or desktop station. Its performance potential is less valuable if your screen, games or settings do not require it.
Choose Steam Deck when you want one device for both modes
Deck is the compromise option: handheld during the week and docked on a television when you want a larger image. Remember that docking changes the connections and display, not the internal CPU and GPU. If your main reason for considering Steam Machine is performance at high resolution, a docked Deck may not meet that goal.

Limitations and potential surprises
Do not assume every Steam game works perfectly
SteamOS compatibility is title-specific. A game can be listed as playable yet have a problem with a particular mode, launcher or peripheral. Test or verify the games that matter most before you make the device your only gaming computer.
Do not treat Valve’s performance claim as a benchmark
The “over six times” statement does not provide a standardized test, resolution, graphics preset or frame-rate comparison. It cannot predict performance in your exact game. Wait for independent testing and finalized specifications before making a purchase decision based solely on that figure.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Steam Machine specifications may change
Valve flags possible specification changes before availability. Confirm the final CPU, GPU, memory, storage, ports, release information and regional ordering status on the product page when you are ready to buy.
Docking does not solve every display problem
A dock can expose HDMI and DisplayPort, but the television still determines supported resolutions, refresh rates, HDR behavior and input latency. If the screen is limited to an older mode, the dock cannot create a faster panel.
Battery estimates are ranges, not guarantees
The Deck OLED’s 3–12-hour figure covers different content and conditions. Lower brightness, a frame-rate limit and a less demanding game can extend a session; high brightness and intensive 3D rendering can shorten it. Plan for charging during long trips.
A practical decision checklist
- Write down where you will play most often: handheld, TV, desk or a mix.
- List the display, controller, network connection and cables you already own.
- Identify the games you consider essential and check their current SteamOS compatibility labels individually.
- Decide whether battery operation is a requirement or an inconvenience you would rather avoid.
- Compare the storage configuration you need, including room for updates and a microSD expansion plan.
- For a TV setup, verify HDMI or DisplayPort inputs, target resolution, refresh rate and available space for ventilation.
- For Steam Machine, wait for final specifications and regional availability if those details affect your purchase.
- Compare the total cost of the computer, display, controls, dock, storage and cables—not just the advertised device configuration.
Bottom line: Steam Deck or Steam Machine?
Steam Deck is better for most people who want flexibility: it is ready to play without another screen, works away from an outlet for a limited time, and can later connect to a TV or monitor through a dock. Steam Machine is better when your gaming life is centered on one permanent display and you specifically want the more powerful hardware class Valve lists.
Choose based on your actual room, games and complete equipment list. A docked Deck is not a faster Steam Machine, and a Steam Machine is not a portable Deck. Once you separate mobility from performance and account for the display and accessories each setup requires, the choice is straightforward.
