To check whether a Steam game will run on a Steam Machine, open the game’s Steam Store page and read its Steam Machine, SteamOS and Steam Deck compatibility panel. Then compare the game’s CPU, GPU, RAM, storage and operating-system requirements with the specific Steam Machine hardware. If the game is unrated or carries a warning, check recent ProtonDB reports and investigate anti-cheat, third-party launchers, codecs and other middleware before installing.
A compatibility badge predicts whether the game is likely to launch and work with expected controls, but it is not a universal frame-rate guarantee. Resolution, graphics settings, updates, drivers, Proton versions and the exact hardware still determine how well it plays.
What Steam Machine compatibility actually means
Steam Machine is one of the devices Valve identifies as officially powered by SteamOS. SteamOS is Linux-based. A game with a native Linux build can run without a translation layer; a Windows game without a native Linux build is normally run through Proton, the compatibility layer Valve ships with SteamOS.
Valve said in 2025 that “the vast majority of the Steam library runs on SteamOS, thanks to the Proton compatibility layer Valve ships,” and described more than 18,000 Steam titles as supported through Proton at the time. That is a broad library count, not a promise that every title has identical performance, feature support or multiplayer functionality.

Steam Machine review results are intended to expose known problems with the game and its middleware under Proton. They answer a launchability and usability question: can the title install, start, display its interface and accept expected input under the tested conditions? They do not replace the game’s hardware requirements or guarantee a particular frame rate on every Steam Machine configuration.
The five-step compatibility check

1. Open the game’s Steam Store page
Find the title in the Steam client or on the Steam Store and scroll to the compatibility information. Look specifically for Steam Machine, SteamOS and Deck details. Valve’s review process checks the game and relevant middleware through Proton, so this panel is the fastest first filter.

2. Treat the badge as an experience forecast
Read the explanation attached to the badge, not just its color or word. Verified means the title meets Valve’s published criteria. Playable means it can work, but you may need to adjust a setting, use an on-screen keyboard, navigate a launcher or accept another stated caveat. Unsupported means Valve found a blocking issue in its review. An unrated or unknown result means Valve has not supplied a dependable verdict yet.

3. Compare hardware independently
Valve explicitly advises checking hardware requirements in addition to compatible operating systems. Read the game’s minimum and recommended CPU, GPU, RAM, storage and resolution targets, then compare them with the exact Steam Machine model you intend to use. A positive SteamOS badge cannot compensate for a graphics processor below the game’s minimum requirement.

4. Investigate multiplayer and middleware
Check for anti-cheat, third-party launchers, digital-rights-management components, media codecs and unusual video or login paths. Valve warns that some anti-cheat providers and media codecs remain unsupported. A game can therefore install and reach a menu yet fail when joining an online match, authenticating through a launcher or playing a cutscene.

5. Consult community reports when Valve’s data is incomplete
For an unrated, disputed or recently updated title, read recent reports on ProtonDB. Look for reports from hardware similar to yours and note the Proton version, launch options, graphics settings, controller behavior, multiplayer status and any workaround. ProtonDB is a crowdsourced supplement, not a replacement for Valve’s current Store rating or the game’s own requirements.

How to read the Steam Machine badges

Steamworks documentation states that Steam Machine has its own customer-visible rating and that reviews can include Proton-specific blocking bugs or performance problems. The rating is therefore more informative about launchability and known conditions than about one frame-rate number across all displays.
Match the game’s requirements to your Steam Machine
Do this comparison even when the Store badge is Verified. Record the requirements in a small checklist so you do not confuse a compatible operating system with sufficient performance capacity.

When requirements are not stated in equivalent terms, use the stricter practical interpretation: a game that lists a high recommended GPU may launch on a weaker machine but require reduced resolution or settings. A Steam rating does not remove that trade-off.
Middleware that can break an otherwise compatible game
Anti-cheat and online play
Anti-cheat is a separate compatibility gate. Valve notes that some anti-cheat providers are unsupported on SteamOS. A title may open normally and still block online matchmaking because its anti-cheat service does not operate through Proton. Check recent reports for the game’s current multiplayer status rather than inferring it from the ability to reach the main menu.
Third-party launchers and account sign-in
A launcher can make a Playable title feel very different from a native, controller-ready game. Look for reports about text entry, focus problems, account authentication, mandatory updates and whether the launcher appears every time the game starts. If a launcher is required, confirm that it accepts gamepad input or that you can reliably use a keyboard.

Digital-rights management and background services
DRM components can fail independently of the game executable. Reports that mention activation limits, services that do not start under Proton or a launcher that closes immediately are more useful than a generic “it works” statement. Prefer evidence from a recent Proton version and a similar hardware class.
Codecs, video playback and cutscenes
Valve warns that some media codecs remain unsupported. The game may therefore reach its menu while showing a black screen, skipping an introductory movie or failing at a story transition. Treat a cutscene failure as a compatibility problem even if the renderer and controls work.
Controller layout, text and interface
Valve’s badge can include interface and input conditions. Check whether text is legible at your display resolution, whether every menu is navigable with a controller and whether a virtual keyboard is needed for names or passwords. These details matter more on a living-room Steam Machine than they do on a desktop with a mouse and keyboard.
How to use ProtonDB without over-trusting it
ProtonDB collects Linux and Steam Deck reports from players. Use it when the Store page is unrated, when a recent update may have changed behavior or when Valve’s stated caveat does not explain your problem.
- Start with recent reports. Older entries may describe a Proton release, game patch or launcher version that is no longer current.
- Match the hardware. A report from a different graphics processor or memory configuration may not predict your result.
- Record the Proton version. Reports that name the compatibility tool are more reproducible than reports that only say “it runs.”
- Separate launch success from playability. Note whether the report covers the title screen, a complete session, cutscenes and online play.
- Read the workaround, not just the rating. A report that requires a launch option, a different Proton tool or a manual file change carries a higher maintenance burden.
Community evidence is valuable but variable. Use several recent reports that agree with one another, and give priority to Valve’s current rating when the two sources conflict unless the reports document a newer game or Proton update.
How to force a different Proton version
Changing the compatibility tool can resolve a regression or make an older title launch, but it can also introduce new problems. Steam Support documents this path:

- Open Library in the Steam client and select the game.
- Open Properties for that game.
- Select Compatibility.
- Enable the option to force a specific Steam Play compatibility tool and choose the Proton version you want to test.
- Launch the game and test the failure path you care about: startup, a save load, a cutscene or multiplayer login.
- Record the original setting and restore it if the change makes the game less stable or breaks another feature.
Test one variable at a time. Changing Proton, launch options, graphics settings and controller mappings simultaneously makes it impossible to identify which change helped. If a newer game update fixes the issue, remove the forced tool and return to the default so Steam can manage compatibility updates.

Comparing two games before you install them
When choosing between titles, compare more than the badge. The following framework keeps launch reliability, performance and maintenance separate.

Troubleshoot by the symptom
The game does not launch
- Re-read the Store compatibility notes for a known blocker.
- Check whether a launcher or anti-cheat service is failing before the game window appears.
- Compare your CPU, GPU, RAM and operating system against the game’s minimum requirements.
- Review recent ProtonDB reports and test a different Proton version using the documented Properties → Compatibility path.
The game reaches the menu but crashes during loading
- Check reports for a specific Proton version, launch option or video codec issue.
- Test a save load or a new game separately; a corrupted or unsupported video path can fail only at a transition.
- Undo recent forced-tool or launch-option changes and retest with the default setting.
Single-player works but online play fails
- Investigate anti-cheat support first.
- Confirm that the report covers the current game build and online mode, not only offline play.
- Do not treat successful matchmaking on another operating system as evidence that the SteamOS path is supported.
Cutscenes are black or the game freezes at a video
- Look for codec or video-playback reports.
- Check whether a newer Proton version is reported to fix the same scene.
- If the game is Playable, read the exact caveat; the badge may already identify a media limitation.
Controls or text are unusable
- Check the Store notes and community reports for controller and keyboard requirements.
- Try the documented input workaround before changing graphics or Proton settings.
- Consider whether the interface is readable at your chosen resolution and viewing distance.
What the badge cannot tell you about frame rate
No universal Steam Machine frame-rate guarantee is published in the reviewed Valve guidance. Performance depends on the game’s requirements, resolution, graphics settings, updates, drivers and the particular issue that led to a Playable or Unsupported result.
Use a performance target you can state precisely, such as a chosen resolution, preset and frame-rate range, then compare that target with the game’s recommended hardware. A Verified badge answers “does this meet Valve’s compatibility criteria?” It does not answer “will this hold my preferred frame rate at my preferred settings?”
A pre-install decision checklist
- Have you read the Steam Machine, SteamOS and Deck panel on the game’s current Store page?
- Do you understand whether the result is Verified, Playable, Unsupported or unrated?
- Have you compared CPU, GPU, RAM, storage and operating-system requirements with your exact machine?
- Have you identified your intended resolution, graphics preset and frame-rate target?
- Does the game use anti-cheat, a third-party launcher, DRM, unusual codecs or a mandatory video path?
- If Valve has not reviewed it, have you read recent ProtonDB reports from similar hardware?
- If you plan to change Proton, have you recorded the default setting so you can restore it?
- For multiplayer, have you confirmed online functionality rather than only successful startup?
Bottom line
Start with the game’s Steam Store compatibility panel, but make the decision in two layers: first establish whether SteamOS and Proton can launch and operate the title, then establish whether the Steam Machine’s hardware can deliver your chosen settings. Verified is the strongest expectation signal, Playable requires you to accept its stated caveat, Unsupported needs current contrary evidence before you spend time troubleshooting, and an unrated game requires the most investigation. Hardware requirements, middleware checks and recent ProtonDB reports turn the badge into a practical answer for your particular machine.
