A Steam Machine owner says a modification using conductive EMI-shielding tape stopped their controller from disconnecting from the machine’s internal receiver. The poster estimated the materials would cost $15 or less and reported several hours without a dropout—but this is one person’s account, not a confirmed fix or a Valve repair. If your machine is still under warranty, contact Valve support before opening it.

What the $15 Steam Machine controller fix involves

In a Reddit post published October 11, 2026, user freestylemaster proposes wrapping the internal receiver’s 2.4 GHz antenna cable in double-conductive EMI shielding tape, then using another piece of tape to connect the shielding to bare metal on the heatsink. The poster’s explanation is that shielding may reduce interference; the cause of the reported disconnections has not been independently established.

The poster estimates the materials and a Torx driver, if needed, would cost $15 or less. They report that the controller stayed connected for hours while the CPU was at 90°C and the fan was above 1,600 RPM. Those temperatures, the test conditions, and the result are the poster’s account, not independently verified measurements or evidence of long-term reliability. Read the original Reddit post.

Should you try the tape modification?

It is an invasive, unverified DIY modification—not an official repair. The post itself warns that opening the machine can damage it and may affect warranty coverage. If the machine is in warranty, contact Valve support before opening the enclosure. A commenter in the same discussion says they sent a machine to Valve for warranty repair and that it seemed to work afterward, but they had not tested it much; that report does not establish likely eligibility, turnaround time, or outcome.

If you decide to consider the modification anyway, understand that the post describes a procedure rather than a verified repair guide. It requires opening the Steam Machine and handling a small antenna connector and cable. The post calls for a Torx T9H driver, while a commenter reportedly identifies the bit as T8. Check the fit rather than forcing a driver into a screw.

What the poster describes

  1. Unplug the Steam Machine, remove its back cover, and take out additional screws.
  2. Slide out the internal board to reach the 2.4 GHz antenna cable.
  3. Carefully lift and disconnect the antenna connector. Do not pull on the cable.
  4. Wrap the cable in double-conductive EMI shielding tape and reconnect the antenna.
  5. Press a larger piece of tape into the gap so it contacts bare heatsink metal. Keep conductive tape away from exposed circuit-board components.

This is a summary of the poster’s instructions, not an independently checked set of service steps. If you are not comfortable with the risk of damage or uncertain about the correct driver, do not proceed.

Try the external wireless puck before opening the machine

The included wireless puck offers a reversible troubleshooting option that does not require opening the Steam Machine. In a July 2026 owner discussion, some users said the puck reduced dropouts, while others reported continuing problems or suspected software, interference, or system-load causes. Reports differ, so it is not a guaranteed fix. One commenter said the puck must be plugged into the Steam Machine to act as the receiver; when the controller is paired with the machine, the puck serves as a charger. Read the owner discussion.

PC Gamer’s June 22, 2026 hands-on review describes using the included puck during initial setup and says pairing with the internal receiver was awkward for the reviewer. That is useful context for the two connection options, but the review does not diagnose the disconnection issue or test the tape modification. Read the PC Gamer review.

Compare the available options

Option Open the machine? Risk and reversibility Cost and evidence
Conductive-tape modification Yes; the described steps involve opening the enclosure and handling the antenna cable. Highest hardware-intervention risk of these options; the change is not as readily reversible as changing the receiver setup. The post warns of possible damage and warranty impact. The poster estimates $15 or less, including a driver if needed. The reported success is a single owner’s anecdote, with no independent replication.
External wireless puck No. Reversible; owner reports on whether it reduces dropouts are mixed. No additional cost is established by the cited sources. The puck is included with the machine, according to the PC Gamer review.
Valve support or warranty service No user-performed internal modification. Avoids the risks of opening the machine yourself. Eligibility and outcome depend on Valve’s assessment. Cost, turnaround, and repair outcome are not established by the cited sources.

Is this a common Steam Machine problem?

The cited discussions show that some owners have reported controller dropouts, but they do not establish how prevalent the fault is. They also do not show whether later production runs addressed it or whether Valve endorses the tape modification. Treat the $15 claim as one owner’s estimate and the reported fix as an unconfirmed, single-user result—not a dependable repair promise.
