The best Steam Machine alternative for 1440p depends on whether you value a turnkey living-room appliance or the higher performance and upgrade path of a small desktop with a discrete graphics card. A compact ready-built PC such as the Minisforum AtomMan G1 Pro is the simplest route and has published 1440p results in selected games. A small-form-factor (SFF) build using a Radeon RX 9060 XT can deliver substantially more graphics performance, but it occupies more space and requires component selection and setup. Integrated-graphics mini PCs are smaller and often cheaper, yet the available evidence positions them mainly for lighter 1080p gaming.
None of these labels guarantees a fixed frame rate in every modern game. Resolution, quality presets, ray tracing, upscaling and frame generation all change the result. Use the tested games and settings below as reference points, then match the machine to the titles you actually play.
What counts as a Steam Machine alternative?
Valve’s Steam Machine is the reference point: a compact, living-room PC designed around SteamOS and a semi-custom AMD processor and graphics solution. Valve’s product page notes that some specifications may change before availability, so confirm the live listing before relying on a final specification, launch date or regional configuration: Valve Steam Machine product page.

- Ready-built gaming mini PC: Buy a configured system, connect it to a display and install or use the operating system it ships with. The cited example is the 3.8-liter Minisforum AtomMan G1 Pro with a low-profile RTX 5060.
- Small-form-factor desktop: Assemble or order a compact desktop around a conventional discrete graphics card. The cited LDLC PC Box example uses an AMD Radeon RX 9060 XT and a case volume of 11.5 liters.
- Integrated-graphics mini PC: Use a processor’s built-in graphics to keep cost, power draw and size down. The Minisforum Venus UM790 Pro is presented as a light-gaming or 1080p option, not as the strongest general 1440p choice.
The distinction matters because a tiny chassis and console-like simplicity usually limit cooling capacity and upgrade options, while a discrete-GPU desktop needs more room and configuration work but offers greater graphics headroom.
Quick comparison
| Path | Evidence-supported example | What the 1440p evidence shows | Main trade-offs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ready-built compact gaming PC | Minisforum AtomMan G1 Pro, low-profile RTX 5060 | PC Gamer reports playable results in selected 1440p tests, including 59 average FPS in Baldur’s Gate 3 at Ultra and 52 average FPS in Metro Exodus Enhanced at Ultra. | Very small 3.8-liter chassis; demanding games may require reduced settings or upscaling. Verify the exact SKU, stock and price. |
| DIY or retailer SFF desktop | LDLC PC Box example with Radeon RX 9060 XT | TechRadar describes substantially more graphics performance than the Steam Machine, but does not provide FPS figures that can be transferred to other games. | Larger 11.5-liter footprint, more assembly or configuration, and additional living-room thermal and noise considerations. The discrete GPU can be replaced later. |
| Integrated-graphics mini PC | Minisforum Venus UM790 Pro | PC Gamer frames it around playable 1080p gaming; the cited material does not establish it as a strong all-purpose 1440p recommendation. | Lowest complexity and compactness, but limited performance in demanding 1440p games and no discrete GPU to upgrade. |
The examples are not a head-to-head laboratory test. They were reviewed in different contexts, so compare like-for-like games and settings rather than treating the table as a universal ranking.
Steam Machine baseline: what its benchmark actually means
PC Gamer’s Steam Machine review lists a Zen 4 six-core, twelve-thread CPU, RDNA 3 graphics with 8 GB of GDDR6 memory and two storage-capacity choices. The review also records compromises in benchmark performance. In Cyberpunk 2077, it averaged 28 FPS at 1440p on the Medium preset with ray tracing enabled and Quality FSR upscaling; frame generation was disabled. That is a useful workload reference, not a claim that every game will run at 28 FPS or that 1440p High is guaranteed. See the full test context at PC Gamer’s Steam Machine review.

There is another M.2 2280 PCIe4.0 slot available for expanding the storage. Without worrying about lack of capacity, you can run software smoothly, watch and storage large-scale movies, photos without any stress.
The result illustrates why the phrase 1440p capable needs a qualifier. A game with a lighter rendering load can run considerably faster, while a current ray-traced title may need a lower preset, an upscaler or both. If you want native 2560×1440 rendering with no reconstruction, treat any benchmark using FSR or another upscaler as a different mode.
Ready-built choice: Minisforum AtomMan G1 Pro
The AtomMan G1 Pro is the clearest plug-and-play alternative in the cited evidence. PC Gamer’s mini-PC guide, updated September 30, 2026, lists a low-profile RTX 5060 in a 3.8-liter chassis and reports 1440p tests in named games. The tiny volume suits a media cabinet or desk where a conventional tower would be intrusive, while a discrete GPU gives it a meaningful advantage over integrated graphics.
Published 1440p results
| Game and settings | Average FPS | 1% low | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Baldur’s Gate 3, Ultra, 1440p | 59 FPS | 42 FPS | A near-60 average in this tested configuration, with lower frame-time performance represented by the 1% low. |
| Metro Exodus Enhanced, Ultra, 1440p | 52 FPS | 36 FPS | Still around the 60-FPS target on average, but the 1% low shows that busy scenes can feel less smooth. |
Those figures are measurements for two specific games and presets. They do not establish performance in a complete library, and they do not show how the machine behaves with every ray-tracing mode, upscaler or driver version. Use them to set expectations: high-quality 1440p is plausible in some games, but a demanding new release may require a lower preset or reconstructed output.

Why the small chassis is useful—and limiting
- Living-room fit: At 3.8 liters, the system is easier to place beside a console or behind a display than an 11.5-liter SFF desktop.
- Simple deployment: A ready-built unit avoids selecting a motherboard, power supply, cooler and case that all fit together.
- Thermal headroom: A very small enclosure has less space for airflow and heat dissipation. Expect fan behavior and sustained performance to depend on room temperature, dust and the manufacturer’s power limits.
- Upgrade limits: Confirm which memory, storage and graphics components are replaceable before purchase. A low-profile, system-specific GPU is not as flexible as a standard desktop card.
Who should choose it?
Choose the AtomMan G1 Pro when you want the least setup, a genuinely small footprint and a discrete GPU that can handle selected 1440p workloads. It is a better fit than an integrated-graphics mini PC for modern 3D games, but it is not a promise of Ultra settings or a fixed frame rate in every current release. Check the exact memory, storage, operating-system edition and graphics configuration on the seller’s live listing; model names can cover regional SKUs.
Higher-performance route: an SFF desktop with Radeon RX 9060 XT
TechRadar’s cited LDLC PC Box example pairs a compact desktop chassis with an AMD Radeon RX 9060 XT and describes substantially more graphics performance than the Steam Machine at the same stated price in that article. It does not publish a universal FPS table that can be reused for every game, so the safe conclusion is relative: the discrete card gives this class of build more rendering capacity and a stronger upgrade foundation, not a guaranteed number of frames.
What the discrete GPU changes
- More graphics headroom: A full desktop graphics card is designed for higher sustained power and cooling than an integrated GPU, making high-resolution textures and demanding effects more practical.
- Upgrade path: When a future card fits the case, power supply and motherboard, you can replace the GPU without replacing the entire computer.
- Component choice: You can balance CPU, memory, storage and cooling around the games you play instead of accepting one fixed mini-PC configuration.
What you give up
The cited example occupies 11.5 liters—still compact beside a mid-tower, but almost three times the AtomMan’s stated volume. You must verify physical clearances, power connectors, cooling and operating-system installation. A build that is quiet on an open test bench can be louder in a closed cabinet, so leave ventilation around the intake and exhaust and avoid stacking heat-producing devices directly on top of it.

Buying a retailer-assembled system reduces assembly risk but does not remove the need to check the parts list. A DIY system adds cable routing, firmware updates and driver installation to the first-day workload. In return, standard desktop parts generally make later repairs and upgrades easier than proprietary mini-PC modules.
Who should choose it?
Pick the RX 9060 XT SFF route if 1440p performance and future GPU replacement matter more than the smallest possible enclosure. It is the stronger choice for a broad modern-game library, but only after confirming that the case, power supply and cooling are appropriate for the selected card. The RX 9060 XT is a component recommendation for a compatible desktop, not a standalone Steam Machine replacement.
Budget and light-gaming route: integrated-graphics mini PC
The Minisforum Venus UM790 Pro represents the integrated-graphics approach in PC Gamer’s guide. The cited coverage presents it around playable 1080p gaming and does not establish it as a general 1440p recommendation. That makes it relevant when your priorities are low cost, low power, a tiny enclosure or games with modest graphics demands.

When integrated graphics are enough
- Older games, competitive titles and 2D or strategy games that run well at 1080p.
- Streaming or remote-play use where the mini PC is not rendering a demanding game locally.
- A secondary system for travel, a child’s desk or a media-room cabinet where size and simplicity outweigh visual quality.
Where expectations need to change
Integrated graphics share system memory and have less dedicated bandwidth than a discrete card. Lowering the resolution, using a balanced preset and enabling an appropriate upscaler can help, but those measures do not turn the UM790 Pro into an equivalent of the AtomMan G1 Pro or an RX 9060 XT desktop. If your target is native 1440p Ultra in current AAA games, start with a discrete-GPU option instead.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Native 1440p, upscaling and frame generation
Always record three details alongside a frame-rate claim:
- Output resolution: A game may output a 1440p image while internally rendering at a lower resolution.
- Quality preset and effects: Medium, High and Ultra can change GPU load dramatically; ray tracing is particularly expensive in many titles.
- Temporal features: FSR or another upscaler reconstructs the displayed image from a lower internal resolution. Frame generation can increase the displayed frame count but does not remove the underlying input latency or rendering workload.
The Steam Machine’s 28-FPS result used Quality FSR and had frame generation off. The AtomMan figures were reported as Ultra 1440p results, but the cited summary does not attach an upscaling mode to those two numbers. Do not merge the results into a single performance score.
Compare total ownership, not just frame rate
| Decision factor | AtomMan G1 Pro | RX 9060 XT SFF desktop | Venus UM790 Pro |
|---|---|---|---|
| Initial setup | Lowest: ready-built compact PC. | Highest: select or assemble compatible components and configure software. | Low: ready-built mini PC, with lighter gaming expectations. |
| Graphics class | Discrete low-profile RTX 5060. | Discrete Radeon RX 9060 XT in the cited example. | Integrated graphics. |
| Physical volume in cited coverage | 3.8 liters. | 11.5 liters. | Not stated in the cited comparison. |
| 1440p evidence | 59/42 FPS in Baldur’s Gate 3 Ultra; 52/36 FPS in Metro Exodus Enhanced Ultra (average/1% low). | More graphics performance than the Steam Machine is reported, but no transferable FPS figures are supplied. | Coverage centers on playable 1080p, not broad 1440p performance. |
| Upgrade outlook | Must be checked for the exact SKU; compact proprietary parts may limit options. | Discrete GPU and standard desktop components offer the clearest future replacement path, subject to case and power limits. | Integrated graphics cannot be swapped for a desktop GPU. |
Prices, stock and final specifications change by region and date. Treat any retailer total as a snapshot, include memory and storage in the calculation, and add the cost of an operating-system license or peripherals if they are not bundled.
How to choose in five steps
- List your actual games. Separate lightweight or competitive titles from ray-traced AAA releases. A 1440p target means something different for each group.
- Set your image-quality rule. Decide whether 1440p output with an upscaler is acceptable or whether you require native rendering. Also decide whether a 60-FPS average is sufficient or whether you need stronger 1% lows.
- Measure your space. Record shelf width, height, depth and ventilation clearance. Compare the cited 3.8-liter and 11.5-liter volumes, then check the complete dimensions because volume alone does not describe orientation or cable access.
- Choose your tolerance for setup. Select the ready-built mini PC for a console-like deployment; select the SFF desktop if firmware, drivers, cable routing and future part replacement are acceptable work.
- Verify the live configuration. Confirm the exact GPU, memory, storage, power supply, operating system, warranty, price and stock in your region before ordering.
Setup checklist for a living-room installation
Ready-built mini PC
- Place the unit where intake and exhaust vents have unobstructed airflow; do not seal it inside a tight cabinet.
- Connect the display at its native 2560×1440 mode and update the system firmware, graphics driver and operating system.
- Install one representative demanding game and test native 1440p, your preferred quality preset and an upscaled mode. Record average FPS and whether stutter appears in busy scenes.
- Set a frame-rate limit appropriate to the display and listen for fan noise from your normal seating position.
- Keep the manufacturer’s recovery method or installation media available before changing partitions or replacing storage.
SFF desktop
- Confirm GPU length, height, thickness, power connectors and power-supply capacity against the case and motherboard documentation.
- Assemble or inspect the system with airflow paths clear and cables secured away from fans.
- Update motherboard firmware, install chipset and graphics drivers, then validate temperatures and fan curves during a sustained game session.
- Test the same game settings you intend to use in the living room; an open workbench can produce different noise and temperature results than a cabinet.
- Document the component model numbers and keep spare mounting screws and modular cables with the system for future upgrades.
Common buying mistakes
- Treating one benchmark as a guarantee: The AtomMan’s two results and the Steam Machine’s Cyberpunk result are title-specific measurements.
- Confusing output resolution with native rendering: An upscaled 1440p image can look good, but it is not the same workload as native 1440p.
- Ignoring 1% lows: Average FPS can hide short dips that are noticeable during traversal or combat; use the reported 42- and 36-FPS 1% lows as a reminder to examine frame-time behavior.
- Buying by chassis volume alone: A smaller case can restrict GPU size, cooling and serviceability. Check the complete dimensions and ventilation requirements.
- Assuming every regional SKU matches: Memory, storage, wireless hardware, operating system and power adapters can vary. Match the exact listing to the review configuration.
- Forgetting the display: A 1440p monitor or television, variable-refresh support and the correct cable can affect the experience as much as a small preset change.
Verdict
For the simplest compact 1440p experiment, the AtomMan G1 Pro is the strongest ready-built fit in the cited evidence: it combines a 3.8-liter enclosure with measured Ultra-1440p results in two games. For the highest graphics headroom and a credible future GPU upgrade, choose an appropriately cooled SFF desktop with a Radeon RX 9060 XT, accepting its 11.5-liter footprint and greater setup burden. Choose an integrated-graphics mini PC such as the Venus UM790 Pro only when light gaming, 1080p output and compactness matter more than demanding 1440p performance.
