Choose Steam Link if your games already run through Steam and you want the quickest setup. Choose Moonlight with Sunshine if you need to add non-Steam games, launch desktop applications, or use a wider range of host and client platforms. Neither is a universal latency or image-quality winner: the result depends on your PC encoder, phone decoder, router, Wi-Fi conditions and controller.
Steam Link is Valve’s Remote Play client. Moonlight is a client that pairs with host software, most commonly Sunshine. Both send encoded video and audio to your phone and return your inputs to the gaming PC, but their setup models and documented capabilities differ.
What Steam Link and Moonlight actually do
Steam Remote Play runs the game on your computer, encodes the video and audio, streams them to another device, and sends controller or touch input back to the PC. Valve describes the technology as “real-time video encoding over a custom low-latency network protocol.” Steam Link is the phone client for that workflow, so Steam must be running on the host computer.

Moonlight is a family of streaming clients. Its setup guide documents pairing with Sunshine and also describes an older GeForce Experience host workflow. The project’s FAQ recommends Sunshine, describes it as fully open source, and says it supports more platforms and GPUs than the older GeForce Experience software. In practice, Moonlight separates the client on your phone from the host service on your PC; you choose or add the applications that the host exposes.

Is Moonlight better than Steam Link?
Pick Steam Link for a Steam-first setup
Steam Link is the lower-effort choice when your PC already runs Steam and the games you want are in your Steam Library. You do not need to install a separate host service, create Sunshine credentials or manually add each game. Valve’s product page is specifically built around streaming the Steam Library to phones and other supported devices.
This simplicity also makes troubleshooting more direct: verify that Steam is running, the phone is paired with the same account and network, and Remote Play is enabled. If your goal is “play my Steam games on my phone,” Steam Link usually has fewer moving parts.
Pick Moonlight with Sunshine for a broader documented workflow
Moonlight is the stronger fit when you want a desktop session, manually added games, emulators or other applications. Sunshine’s documented setup includes Steam and Remote Desktop entries and allows additional applications, so the host is not limited to a Steam Library view.
Moonlight is also attractive when you want one client family across several operating systems or when your PC does not fit the older GeForce Experience host model. The Moonlight FAQ says Sunshine supports more platforms and GPUs than that legacy host, but you should still check the current Sunshine and Moonlight documentation for your exact operating system, GPU and phone.

Do not choose solely on promised latency
Neither project’s official documentation provides a controlled head-to-head test proving that it is always faster or clearer. A phone with a weak hardware decoder, a congested 5 GHz channel or a PC connected over Wi-Fi can erase any software-level advantage. Select the workflow that matches your applications first, then tune the network and video settings.
Requirements before you install either app
Steam Link requirements
Valve’s Android Steam Link support page lists Android 5.0 or newer, a computer running Steam, a supported operating system and a 5 GHz wireless router. The basic arrangement is a PC running Steam and a phone on the same local network. Valve lists Steam Controller, Xbox One S, DualShock 4 on Android 9.0 or newer, Razer Kishi and Raiju Mobile among supported Android input devices; other controllers may work without being officially supported.
Moonlight requirements
Moonlight’s setup guide lists Android 4.1 or newer, iOS 9.3 or newer and tvOS 12 or newer as client minimums, while warning that newer, faster Android devices are more likely to decode smoothly. It recommends a mid- to high-end wireless router, 5 GHz Wi-Fi 5 or Wi-Fi 6, and an Ethernet connection from the gaming PC to the router. Requirements can change, so check the current app listing and guide before relying on an old phone or operating-system version.

- Connect the gaming PC to the router by Ethernet whenever practical.
- Put the phone on the 5 GHz band rather than a congested 2.4 GHz network.
- Keep the phone within strong Wi-Fi coverage; walls and distance increase retransmissions and delay.
- Start with the resolution and frame rate your phone can decode reliably, then raise them one step at a time.
Valve’s suggested Steam Link network settings and Moonlight’s setup guide both emphasize the network path. Improve that path and inspect the app’s performance statistics before buying a new router.

How to set up Steam Link on an Android phone
- On the gaming PC, install or update Steam and sign in to the account containing the games.
- Leave Steam running. In Steam’s Remote Play settings, confirm Remote Play is enabled.
- Connect the phone to the same local network as the PC, preferably 5 GHz Wi-Fi.
- Install Steam Link from the phone’s app store and open it.
- Follow the on-screen pairing process. If Steam displays a PIN on the PC, enter it in the phone app.
- Run the connection test, then select the PC and choose a game from the Steam Library.
- Pair a controller before launching a demanding game, or use the app’s touch controls for games that support them.
If the PC is not found, first verify that both devices are on the same network and that Steam is still running. Guest Wi-Fi, VPN isolation and firewall rules can prevent local discovery even when both devices appear to have internet access.
How to set up Moonlight with Sunshine
- Download Sunshine for the host PC from the current project documentation and install it.
- Start Sunshine and open its configuration interface. Create a unique username and password when prompted.
- Install Moonlight on the phone and connect it to the same home network as the PC.
- Select the detected Sunshine computer in Moonlight. The PC displays a pairing PIN.
- Enter that PIN in Sunshine’s interface and wait for the client to show the paired host.
- Launch a listed entry such as Steam or Remote Desktop, or add another application in Sunshine’s configuration.
- Test at a modest resolution and frame rate. Increase quality only after the stream is stable.
Protect the Sunshine configuration interface with a unique password. The setup guide warns that someone who can access that interface may be able to add clients that access the computer. Do not expose the interface to the public internet, and do not reuse a password from another service.
Can Moonlight stream games without an Nvidia GPU?
Moonlight is a client, not a requirement for a particular GPU brand. Its FAQ recommends Sunshine and says Sunshine supports more platforms and GPUs than the older GeForce Experience host. The practical requirement is that the host operating system and GPU provide a hardware encoder Sunshine can use, and that the phone can decode the selected stream. Check current Sunshine compatibility for your exact GPU rather than assuming that every graphics adapter offers identical codecs or performance.

Steam Link is built around Steam Remote Play, and Valve documents streaming the Steam Library. Steam can add some non-Steam programs as shortcuts, but that is a Steam feature rather than a guarantee that every launcher, anti-cheat system or game will behave correctly. Moonlight with Sunshine is the clearer choice when manually adding applications or launching a desktop is central to your use case because those workflows are explicitly documented in the Moonlight guide.

Phone operating systems and controller support
| Client or platform | Documented details |
|---|---|
| Steam Link on Android | Android 5.0+ on Valve’s support page. Listed controllers include Steam Controller, Xbox One S, DualShock 4 on Android 9.0+, Razer Kishi and Raiju Mobile. |
| Steam Link on Apple devices | Valve lists iOS and Apple TV as supported Remote Play destinations; consult the current Apple-specific support information for OS and controller details. |
| Moonlight on Android | Android 4.1+ is the listed minimum, but newer, faster devices are more likely to decode smoothly. |
| Moonlight on iOS/tvOS | The guide says iOS/tvOS 13+ can use Xbox One S and PS4 controllers over Bluetooth. It lists controller vibration support on iOS/tvOS 14 for those devices. |
Controller compatibility depends on the phone’s operating-system version, Bluetooth implementation and current app release. Before buying a phone-mounted controller, confirm that exact model and OS combination in the current Steam Link or Moonlight documentation. A Bluetooth phone game controller is optional, but it is usually more practical for action games than touch overlays.
Does Moonlight have less input lag?
There is no official, controlled comparison in the cited documentation that establishes lower input lag for Moonlight or Steam Link across phones and networks. End-to-end delay includes game processing, host encoding, network travel, phone decoding, display scan-out and the controller connection. A wired PC, strong 5 GHz signal and a phone with hardware video decoding can matter more than the client name.
Moonlight’s FAQ specifically cautions that its reported statistics vary with resolution, frame rate and hardware, and that “These numbers can’t be used to compare to other non-Moonlight clients, since each value may not be measuring the same thing, despite potentially having the same name.” Use the performance overlay to find where delay or dropped frames occur, but do not treat an overlay number as a cross-app benchmark.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesPractical latency checklist
- Wire the PC to the router and avoid a Wi-Fi hop on the host side.
- Use 5 GHz Wi-Fi on the phone and move closer to the access point for testing.
- Stop large downloads, cloud backups and video streams on the same network.
- Lower stream resolution or frame rate if the phone’s decoder is overloaded.
- Use a wired or low-latency Bluetooth controller and compare with touch input to identify controller delay.
- Check the app’s statistics while reproducing the problem instead of judging from one brief session.
Image quality, codecs and HDR
Image quality is determined by the chosen resolution, frame rate, bitrate, host encoder, network loss, phone decoder and display. Raising bitrate can preserve detail but may cause stutter on a busy network; lowering it can stabilize play at the cost of compression artifacts. Change one setting at a time so you can identify the cause.
Best Value
- Compatible with Android devices and fits mobile devices ranging from 100mm to 170mm in length.
- Hall Effect Joysticks and Triggers
- Refined bumpers and D-pad. Light and tactile.
- 2 Pro back paddle buttons

Moonlight documents HDR10 streaming as beta. On Android, the guide lists Android 7.0 or newer, an HEVC Main10 hardware decoder and an HDR10-compatible display, along with known issues including color and scaling artifacts. That is a conditional feature, not a general Moonlight advantage: the host, client hardware, software versions and game must all cooperate. If colors look wrong, disable HDR and test standard dynamic range before changing several other settings.
Streaming outside your home
Steam Remote Play and Moonlight can be used beyond the local network, but remote access is not automatic in every household. Moonlight’s guide documents optional Sunshine UPnP configuration for forwarding the required ports and recommends pairing first on the home network. Router behavior, carrier-grade NAT, firewall policies and ISP restrictions can prevent inbound connections.
Apple guidelines require iOS and tvOS users to pair on the same network, according to the Moonlight setup guide. Pair at home before attempting remote use, and treat any request to expose a host service or configuration interface to the internet as a security decision. Never forward Sunshine’s administrative interface; only configure the documented streaming path and keep the interface protected by its unique password.
Troubleshooting by symptom
The phone cannot find the PC
- Confirm the phone and PC are on the same non-guest network.
- Check that Steam is running for Steam Link or Sunshine is running for Moonlight.
- Temporarily test without a VPN, mesh-network isolation or aggressive firewall rule.
- Restart the app and host service, then pair again on the local network.
Video stutters while audio continues
- Move the phone closer to the 5 GHz access point.
- Connect the PC to Ethernet.
- Lower bitrate, resolution or frame rate.
- Check the performance overlay for network loss versus decode or encode overload.
The picture is sharp but controls feel delayed
- Test with fewer devices using the network.
- Reduce resolution or frame rate to reduce encode and decode queues.
- Compare a wired or known-compatible Bluetooth controller with touch input.
- Check whether the display is applying a high-latency picture mode.
Moonlight shows no game or desktop entry
Open Sunshine’s configuration interface and verify that the application is enabled and correctly points to the executable or desktop session. Re-pair only after confirming the host service is running. Keep the interface password protected.
HDR has artifacts or incorrect colors
Confirm every HDR requirement: Android 7.0 or newer, HEVC Main10 hardware decoding, an HDR10-capable display and compatible host settings. If any condition is uncertain, disable HDR and use standard dynamic range.
Which should you install?
Install Steam Link first when your library is in Steam, your priority is a short setup, and you mainly want local streaming to one phone. Install Moonlight with Sunshine when you need a desktop, manually added applications, broader documented client choices or a host workflow not centered on Steam. In both cases, spend your first troubleshooting effort on Ethernet for the PC, 5 GHz Wi-Fi for the phone and decoder-compatible settings; official documentation does not support a universal claim that one client always has lower latency or better image quality.
