The best Steam Link alternative depends on where you want the game to run. Moonlight with Sunshine streams games from your own Windows gaming PC and works with games from multiple stores. GeForce NOW runs supported games on NVIDIA’s cloud computers, so you do not need your own gaming PC at the moment you play. Steam Link remains the simplest baseline when your library and setup are already centered on Steam.

These are streaming solutions, not Android ports: the game renders on a host PC or cloud server, while your phone or tablet receives video and sends controller input. A stable network and a physical gamepad usually matter more than the Android app itself.

Steam Link alternatives at a glance

Choose according to the computer that will run the game. Steam Link and Moonlight/Sunshine use a PC you control; GeForce NOW uses NVIDIA’s cloud infrastructure. That single distinction determines whether you need a gaming PC switched on, which game stores you can use, and how much setup is involved.

Option Where the game runs Best fit Main trade-off
Steam Link Your home PC running Steam Players who already use Steam and want the most direct setup The PC must be on, signed in, and running Steam
Moonlight with Sunshine Your home PC, with the PC doing the encoding Multi-store libraries, desktop access, and flexible self-hosting You must configure a host and maintain a capable, stable network
GeForce NOW NVIDIA cloud servers Players without a suitable gaming PC nearby, where the desired games are supported Experience depends on service availability, supported titles, internet latency, and membership tier

Moonlight is the Android client; Sunshine is the host application installed on your PC. GeForce NOW is not remote access to your personal computer: NVIDIA’s servers render the game and stream it to Android. The services and catalogs change, so check current regional availability, supported games, and membership terms before committing.

How Android game streaming works

In every option, three paths must work at the same time:

  • The host must run the game and encode its video output.
  • Your network must carry the video stream to the Android device with low enough delay.
  • Controller or touch input must travel back to the host quickly enough to feel responsive.

For a self-hosted stream, the PC-to-router connection is just as important as the router-to-phone connection. A powerful gaming PC cannot compensate for a congested wireless link. Cloud streaming adds a second variable: the route from your home to the provider’s data center.

Moonlight and Sunshine: the flexible self-hosted alternative

Moonlight is a free, open-source Android client that can stream games, individual programs, or the complete desktop. It supports games purchased from any store. A new setup normally uses Sunshine as the PC host; Sunshine supports all GPU vendors. Moonlight also documents NVIDIA GeForce Experience as an alternative host, but Sunshine is the practical choice for a fresh, vendor-neutral installation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What Moonlight can stream

  • Games installed through Steam or another PC storefront.
  • Applications that you add manually in Sunshine.
  • The Windows desktop, which is useful for launching a title that is not listed automatically.

Moonlight supports H.264, HEVC, and AV1 streams. AV1 requires Sunshine and a host GPU that can encode AV1. Android gamepad support is included, so a Bluetooth controller can be used instead of on-screen controls.

Moonlight and Sunshine setup

  1. Install Sunshine on the gaming PC. Open Sunshine’s first-time web interface and complete its initial configuration. The web interface is where you manage the host and the applications exposed to Moonlight.
  2. Install Moonlight on the Android phone or tablet. Put the Android device and gaming PC on the same home network for the first connection.
  3. Pair the devices. Moonlight should discover the host. Select it; Moonlight displays a PIN. Enter that PIN in Sunshine’s pairing prompt.
  4. Start with a built-in entry. Sunshine includes Steam and Remote Desktop entries. Launch Steam first if your library is managed there, or use Remote Desktop to confirm that the desktop stream works.
  5. Add another game or application if necessary. Sunshine’s web interface lets you add programs manually. Use this for games from other stores or launchers that do not appear automatically.
  6. Test a complete session on the home network. Confirm that video, sound, input, and controller buttons all work before attempting internet access.
  7. Configure remote access only after local streaming is reliable. Internet streaming introduces router, firewall, and latency variables. Treat it as a separate project rather than the first troubleshooting step.

Pairing locally first gives you a known-good baseline. If a later remote connection fails, you can isolate the problem to internet access instead of wondering whether Sunshine, Moonlight, or the game itself is misconfigured.

Apple EarPods Headphones with USB-C Plug, Wired Ear Buds with Built-in Remote to Control Music, Phone Calls, and Volume
  • SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
  • HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
  • BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
  • COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
  • INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.

Network requirements and realistic expectations

Moonlight recommends a strong connection to the Android device, particularly 5 GHz Wi-Fi, and recommends connecting the gaming PC to the router by Ethernet. Its setup guidance strongly recommends a mid- to high-end wireless router using Wi-Fi 5 (802.11ac) or Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax). Those are project recommendations, not guarantees of a specific frame rate or latency.

  • Prefer Ethernet for the PC. This removes one wireless hop and makes the host-to-router link more consistent.
  • Use 5 GHz Wi-Fi for the phone or tablet. Keep the device within reliable range of the access point; walls and distance can reduce throughput.
  • Reduce competing traffic while testing. Large downloads or busy video streams can create stutter even when an internet speed test looks fast.
  • Test at the location where you actually play. A strong signal beside the router does not prove that the sofa, bedroom, or travel hotspot will behave the same way.

Moonlight explicitly warns that results vary with the client device and network setup. Do not promise that a particular Android model, router, or game will deliver identical quality to another setup.

HDR and codec limitations

HDR streaming has several simultaneous requirements. The Android client must support HDR10, the host GPU must be able to encode HEVC Main 10, and the game must have HDR10 enabled. Games that use operating-system-level HDR may also require an HDR display connected to the host PC. If any one of those conditions is missing, use standard dynamic range rather than assuming the app is broken.

Moonlight controller and input guidance

Moonlight supports Android gamepads. A Bluetooth Android gamepad is optional but usually more comfortable for longer sessions than touch controls. Check that the controller is supported by both your Android version and the game. A phone clip can hold the display above a separate controller, but it is an accessory choice, not a requirement.

GeForce NOW: cloud gaming without your own PC

GeForce NOW is the alternative when you want the game to run on NVIDIA’s cloud computers. Your Android device receives the stream; your home PC does not need to render the game. This can solve the biggest obstacle for someone with an older laptop, no desktop, or a PC that is unavailable while traveling.

Android requirements published by NVIDIA

NVIDIA lists these minimum Android requirements:

  • Android 7.0 or later.
  • At least 1 GB of available memory.
  • OpenGL ES 2.0 support or higher.

Meeting the minimum only establishes technical eligibility. It does not guarantee a comfortable session, because display resolution, Wi-Fi quality, controller behavior, and the distance to NVIDIA’s data center still affect play.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Bandwidth and latency guidance

NVIDIA recommends the following network targets:

Target stream Recommended bandwidth
HD up to 60 FPS 15 Mbps
Full HD at 60 FPS 25 Mbps
QHD at 120 FPS 35 Mbps

NVIDIA recommends Ethernet or 5 GHz Wi-Fi and says latency to an NVIDIA data center should be below 80 ms. These are NVIDIA’s requirements and recommendations, not independent performance measurements. A connection can meet the bandwidth figure and still feel poor if latency spikes, packets are lost, or the wireless channel is congested.

On Android, 1440p and 120-FPS streaming requires a GeForce NOW Ultimate membership. Membership features and prices can change, so verify the current terms for your country before choosing a tier.

Games, stores, and catalog limits

GeForce NOW does not automatically stream every game in your Steam, Epic, or other store library. A title must be supported by the current GeForce NOW catalog, and you may still need to own it through the required store. The technical requirements page does not establish complete catalog coverage or regional availability. Search for each game you care about in the current GeForce NOW app or catalog before signing up.

Controllers for GeForce NOW on a phone

NVIDIA lists Microsoft Xbox controllers and Sony PS5 DualSense and DualShock 4 controllers for phone play. It recommends a gamepad clip that attaches the controller to the phone. The Android app includes an on-screen virtual gamepad, but NVIDIA does not recommend it for long-term play. For short tests it can confirm that a session launches; for extended games, a compatible physical controller is the safer choice.

Steam Link as the baseline

Steam Link is a free Android app using Valve’s Steam Link streaming technology. Basic use requires turning on the home PC, launching Steam, and signing in. If every game you play is in Steam and your PC is already configured for it, Steam Link usually has the fewest moving parts.

Its limitation is also its simplicity: it is tied to the Steam session on your own PC. It does not remove the need for that computer to be powered on and reachable. Moonlight can expose other launchers, standalone programs, and the desktop, while GeForce NOW removes the requirement to own a gaming PC at all.

Detailed comparison for choosing an app

Decision factor Steam Link Moonlight + Sunshine GeForce NOW
Personal gaming PC Required and running Steam Required; Sunshine runs on the host Not required for the cloud session
Where games are purchased Steam library Games from any store, plus manually added programs Only titles currently supported by the service and their required stores
Setup effort Turn on PC, launch Steam, sign in, then connect Install Sunshine, configure its web UI, pair with a PIN, then add apps as needed Install the Android app, meet requirements, and check title and membership support
Network path Android device to your home PC Android device to your home PC; remote access adds internet configuration Android device to an NVIDIA data center
Android controls Depends on the game and Android input setup Android gamepads supported Xbox, DualSense, and DualShock 4 controllers listed; virtual gamepad available but not recommended long term
High-end Android streaming Depends on the host and client configuration HDR requires HDR10 client, HEVC Main 10-capable host GPU, and an HDR10 game; 1440p/120 FPS is not established by the cited Steam Link or Moonlight guidance 1440p and 120 FPS on Android require Ultimate membership

There is no universal winner. Select Steam Link when the Steam-only workflow is more valuable than flexibility. Select Moonlight/Sunshine when you own a PC and want multi-store or desktop streaming. Select GeForce NOW when cloud-hosted play is more practical than maintaining a reachable home PC.

Accessories and network upgrades that can help

Bluetooth Android gamepad

Both Moonlight and GeForce NOW support Android gamepad play. A Bluetooth controller is therefore the most broadly useful optional accessory for this use case. Confirm Android compatibility, button mapping, and the specific game’s controller support before buying; the available guidance does not establish one model as the best choice.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Phone clip

NVIDIA specifically recommends a gamepad clip for attaching a phone to a supported controller. It improves portability but is not needed if you play with a tablet, a stand, or a separate screen.

5 GHz Wi-Fi and Ethernet

Moonlight recommends 5 GHz Wi-Fi for the Android device and Ethernet from the gaming PC to the router. NVIDIA also recommends Ethernet or 5 GHz Wi-Fi. Upgrade only the weak link: if the PC is already wired and the phone has a strong 5 GHz signal, a new router may not change the experience. If the PC uses unstable Wi-Fi, wiring that machine is the first sensible test.

Troubleshooting by symptom

Moonlight cannot find the PC

  1. Confirm Sunshine is installed, running, and completed its first-time web configuration.
  2. Put the Android device and PC on the same home network, not separate guest networks.
  3. Retry discovery and complete the PIN pairing in Sunshine.
  4. Use the Sunshine web interface to confirm that Steam or the intended application is listed.

The stream works but stutters

  • Move the Android device to a stronger 5 GHz signal.
  • Connect the host PC to the router by Ethernet.
  • Stop competing downloads or high-bandwidth streams during the test.
  • Compare a short local-network session with a remote session. If local play is smooth and remote play is not, investigate the internet path rather than changing the game.

HDR does not appear

Check all HDR conditions together: HDR10 support on the Android client, HEVC Main 10 encoding on the host GPU, and HDR10 enabled in the game. For operating-system-level HDR, attach an HDR display to the host PC as required by the game.

GeForce NOW feels delayed

Check the connection against NVIDIA’s guidance: use 5 GHz Wi-Fi or Ethernet, measure whether latency to the NVIDIA data center stays below 80 ms, and test when the local network is quiet. Bandwidth alone is not a latency guarantee. If the game is not in the current supported catalog, changing Android settings will not make it available.

Touch controls are uncomfortable

Pair a compatible Bluetooth controller and verify the game’s input support. For GeForce NOW, NVIDIA describes the virtual gamepad as available but not suitable for long-term play and recommends a physical controller, optionally with a phone clip.

A practical decision checklist

  1. Do you have a gaming PC you can leave on? If no, start with GeForce NOW and check each desired title’s current support.
  2. Are your games spread across stores or do you need desktop access? If yes, Moonlight with Sunshine is the flexible self-hosted choice.
  3. Are all your games in Steam and do you want minimal setup? Try Steam Link first.
  4. Can the PC use Ethernet and the phone use 5 GHz Wi-Fi? If not, address the network before judging streaming quality.
  5. Will you play for more than a few minutes? Plan for a compatible Bluetooth gamepad rather than relying on touch controls.
  6. Do you need remote access outside home? Prove local streaming first with Moonlight/Sunshine, then configure internet access; cloud play through GeForce NOW avoids exposing your home PC but remains dependent on service availability and latency.

What to verify before installing

Service details are volatile. Before installing or paying for anything, verify the current Android app requirements, the games you want, supported regions, membership features, and any device-specific controller limitations. The technical figures above are the published guidance from the respective projects and NVIDIA; they are not a promise that every phone, router, game, or location will perform identically.
