A claim that every game in one Steam library was tested on Linux needs the test results behind it: the games, the machine, the software versions, and what counted as working. Without those details, “the results shocked me” cannot be verified—and no general compatibility guide can stand in for that personal audit.
What can be established is that Steam can run some Windows-only games on Linux through Proton, but success varies by game and setup. This guide explains how to interpret a library test and what to check before deciding whether your own games will work.
What a Linux compatibility test can tell you
A properly documented test can show how a defined set of games behaved on one Linux configuration on a particular date. It cannot establish that every Steam game works on Linux, or predict every other PC’s results. Compatibility can change when games, Proton, drivers, anti-cheat support, or devices are updated.

The title describes a specific personal test, but no game list, hardware and software configuration, per-game outcomes, or definition of “shocked” is available here. So there is no substantiated result or percentage to report. Treat any claim about the tested library’s success rate as unverified unless those details accompany it.

How Steam runs Windows games on Linux
Steam Play can let Windows-only games “potentially work on Linux as well,” according to Steam Support. The compatibility tool commonly used for this is Proton. Valve describes Proton as a Steam-client tool that uses Wine to run Windows-exclusive games on Linux, and recommends the version provided through the Steam client for most users. That mechanism is not a universal guarantee. A game may fail to launch, launch with graphical or input problems, or work in single-player but not multiplayer. A successful launch alone is therefore a narrower result than “works.”
How to check a game’s compatibility in Steam
- Open the game’s properties: In your Steam Library, right-click the game and select Properties.
- Choose a compatibility tool if needed: Open Compatibility, enable the option to force a specific Steam Play compatibility tool, then select a listed Proton version. Steam Support documents per-game tool selection in its Steam Play guidance.
- Test the parts you care about: Check more than whether the game opens. Try the intended mode, controls, saves, and multiplayer features, and note any launcher or anti-cheat issues.
- Record the result with the setup: Include your Linux distribution, hardware, graphics driver, Steam client channel, Proton version, date, and any per-game adjustments. A result without this context is difficult to reproduce or apply to another PC.
What “works” should mean in a library audit
Use separate outcomes rather than a single pass/fail label. A game that starts but has broken multiplayer is not equivalent to one that launches and plays normally. At minimum, record whether it launched, whether gameplay remained stable, and which important features you checked.

- Launches with limitations: Gameplay was possible, but a feature such as a launcher, cutscene, controller, save, graphics option, or multiplayer mode was impaired or untested.
- Works for the tested use: The game met the audit’s stated criteria for the mode and features actually checked. This does not promise identical results on another setup.
- Unknown or not tested: The game was excluded, not reached, or lacks enough evidence for a conclusion. Do not count missing information as a failure.
To support a surprising result, publish the library scope and exclusions, per-game outcomes, and totals for each category alongside the procedure. If the surprise depends on a baseline—such as an expectation about multiplayer or launch reliability—state that comparison explicitly rather than implying it applies to all Linux users.

How to interpret Steam Deck ratings on a Linux PC
Valve’s Steam Deck compatibility categories are Verified, Playable, Unsupported, and Unknown. They reflect the Deck experience, including controller input, display legibility, seamlessness, and system support. Valve says its compatibility review process is ongoing, so ratings may change.
A Deck rating can provide useful context, but it does not certify a different desktop Linux PC. The hardware, controls, display, and software configuration may differ. In particular, a handheld-focused assessment is not a direct performance benchmark for a desktop setup.

Where ProtonDB fits
ProtonDB collects crowdsourced compatibility reports from people using Proton on Linux and Steam Deck. Those reports can help identify issues or workarounds worth checking, but they are not controlled results for your computer or evidence of what happened in a particular author’s test. Compare reports with your own hardware and Proton version, and treat an absent report as unknown rather than proof that a game fails.
