If a Linux game freezes when you Alt+Tab back to it, first change the game from exclusive fullscreen to borderless windowed or ordinary windowed mode. That is the lowest-risk way to test whether the failure is a focus or display-mode transition. If the freeze remains, isolate presentation with gamescope, compare your X11 and Wayland sessions, and—when the game uses Proton—capture a Proton log before changing renderers or drivers.
Start by identifying what actually freezes
“Freeze after Alt+Tab” describes several different failures. The picture may stop while sound continues, the game may stop accepting input, the entire desktop may become unresponsive, or the game may return only after a long delay. These distinctions determine which test to run first. A picture that stops while audio continues is a useful clue that focus or frame presentation may have failed, but it does not prove that one particular component is responsible.
Reproduce the problem once before changing anything and write down the conditions. Record the game title and Steam AppID, whether it is a native Linux build or runs through Proton, the Proton version if applicable, your Linux distribution and kernel, GPU vendor and driver version, whether the desktop session is X11 or Wayland, the number of monitors, each monitor’s refresh rate, the game’s display mode, and every Steam launch option. Also note whether sound continues, whether the mouse or keyboard still reaches the game, and whether switching to another virtual terminal or application recovers the desktop.

Test borderless or windowed mode first
Exclusive fullscreen is the first variable to isolate because Alt+Tab asks the game, display server, desktop compositor, and monitor pipeline to change focus and presentation state at the same time. Borderless windowed mode normally keeps the game inside the desktop’s existing display layout, while ordinary windowed mode makes the transition even more explicit.
Use the game’s video settings
- Launch the game and open its video, graphics, or display settings.
- Change Display Mode from Fullscreen to Borderless Windowed. If that option does not exist, choose Windowed.
- Apply the change, return to the game, press Alt+Tab, and switch back several times.
- Test the same scene or menu each time so that loading, shader compilation, or a one-off transition is not mistaken for the original failure.
If borderless mode fixes the problem, leave it as the practical workaround unless you need exclusive fullscreen for a specific reason. If borderless fails, test ordinary windowed mode. A failure in both modes points away from an exclusive-fullscreen transition and toward the session, compositor, renderer, driver, or the game itself.
Use Steam launch options only when the game setting is insufficient
Steam’s launch-options documentation lists -fullscreen and -windowed (also written as -sw by some titles). To set one, open Steam, right-click the game in your library, choose Properties, stay on General, and enter the option in Launch Options. Use the option documented for that title; not every game implements every flag, and a generic flag cannot guarantee a borderless mode.
For a clean comparison, use one display-mode option at a time. Do not leave -fullscreen and -windowed together, and temporarily remove performance, graphics, compatibility, or debugging flags that are unrelated to this test. After each change, fully exit the game and start it again rather than relying on an in-game restart.

Choose the least disruptive presentation mode

There is no universal winner. A mode that avoids the freeze may have different latency, scaling, multi-monitor, or frame-pacing behavior. Compare modes with the same in-game resolution and graphics settings where possible, and judge the result by both recovery from Alt+Tab and normal play.
Use gamescope as an isolation step
Valve describes gamescope as “the micro-compositor formerly known as steamcompmgr.” Running a game through it can separate the game’s presentation from the compositor used by your normal desktop session. That makes it a diagnostic boundary: if direct launch freezes but a gamescope launch does not, the difference is meaningful even if it does not identify a single root cause.
Wrap a Steam game conservatively
- Open the game’s Steam Properties and select General.
- Put
gamescope -b -- %command%in Launch Options. - Start the game and repeat the same Alt+Tab sequence used in the baseline test.
- If the game does not start, remove the wrapper and verify that the game launches normally before trying another gamescope option.
The -b option requests a borderless gamescope window. Gamescope also documents -f for a fullscreen window. Use one of these presentation choices at a time; do not infer that -f recreates the game’s original exclusive-fullscreen path, because gamescope is still controlling the outer presentation.
Control output size only when necessary
Gamescope supports separate game and output resolutions through its documented width and height options, -w and -h. Start without changing resolution. If you need to test scaling or a monitor-specific mode, add the resolution deliberately and record both values. Changing resolution at the same time as changing the compositor makes the result harder to interpret.

Compare nested sessions and collect diagnostics
Gamescope can run nested from another Wayland or X11 session. The gamescope wiki also documents Steam integration using gamescope -e -- steam -tenfoot -steamos. That command changes the way Steam itself is presented, so treat it as a separate session-level experiment rather than as a normal per-game launch option. The -d option enables additional debugging information; capture that output only when you need evidence for a report.
A gamescope result is most useful when you record the exact command, whether -b or -f was used, any -w/-h values, your X11 or Wayland session, and the monitor arrangement. “Gamescope fixed it” without those details cannot be reproduced reliably.
Compare X11 and Wayland instead of guessing
The desktop session and compositor participate in window focus and presentation. The gamescope documentation explicitly supports nesting from both Wayland and X11, which makes a session comparison a useful diagnostic. It is not a guaranteed cure and does not establish that one protocol is universally better.
- Check which session you are using in your desktop’s session information or login-screen choice.
- Reproduce the freeze in the current session with the same game mode and launch options.
- Log out, choose the other available session type at the login screen, and repeat the test without changing anything else.
- Compare direct launch and the same gamescope command in each session.
If only one session fails, report that distinction. Also report whether the problem appears only with two or more monitors, only when refresh rates differ, or only when the game is on a monitor other than the primary display. Those observations narrow the focus-transition path without requiring you to assume a particular compositor bug.

For Proton games, capture a log before changing the renderer
When the title is a Windows game running through Proton, capture evidence before switching Proton versions or graphics backends. Valve’s Proton FAQ documents the launch option PROTON_LOG=1 %command%. Add exactly that to the game’s Steam launch options, reproduce the freeze once, then exit the game and preserve the generated per-game log named in the form steam-<APPID>.log.
- Open the game’s Properties in Steam and select General.
- Temporarily replace unrelated launch options with
PROTON_LOG=1 %command%. If you also need gamescope, keep the command structure unambiguous and test the logger alone first. - Launch the game, reproduce the Alt+Tab freeze once, and wait for the game to close or recover.
- Locate the resulting
steam-<APPID>.log, save it unchanged, and note the timestamp and the exact Proton version. - Only after preserving that log, test one Proton version at a time so that each result has a clear cause.
Use wined3d as a diagnostic renderer switch
The Proton repository documents PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1. This changes the rendering path from Vulkan-based DXVK to OpenGL-based wined3d. It is a diagnostic switch, not a universal fix: performance, visual output, and compatibility can change substantially. Test it as a separate launch configuration, reproduce the same Alt+Tab sequence, and record whether the symptom changes.
A result in which wined3d avoids the freeze suggests that the Vulkan/DXVK path deserves investigation; it does not prove that wined3d is the best long-term configuration. If the freeze is unchanged, remove the variable and continue with session, display-mode, and driver checks.

When several games freeze, verify the graphics foundation
A problem limited to one title can be a game or Proton interaction. If several unrelated games freeze after Alt+Tab, broaden the investigation to the graphics stack. Valve’s Linux Steam support guidance specifically calls out 32-bit OpenGL support and graphics-driver installation. Missing or mismatched 32-bit components can affect Steam games broadly, including titles that otherwise appear to launch correctly.

- Check that the installed graphics driver matches your GPU and distribution’s current instructions.
- Verify that 32-bit OpenGL support is installed, not only the 64-bit driver libraries.
- Confirm that Vulkan and OpenGL applications work in the same desktop session in which Steam runs.
- Repeat one native Linux title and one Proton title, if available, to see whether the scope crosses runtimes.
- Record driver and library changes before retesting; changing several packages at once hides which change mattered.
Do not treat a broad symptom as proof that the driver is defective. The display-mode and session tests remain valuable because a shared compositor or monitor transition can affect many games even when ordinary desktop graphics appear normal.
Read the result as a decision tree

Prepare a useful support report
Once you have a working and failing configuration, report the difference rather than only saying “Alt+Tab freezes.” Include:
- Game name, Steam AppID, and whether it is native Linux or Proton.
- Proton version and the exact launch options, including environment variables.
- Linux distribution, kernel, desktop environment, and X11 or Wayland session.
- GPU model, driver version, and whether 32-bit OpenGL support is installed.
- Number of monitors, each resolution and refresh rate, and which display shows the game.
- Original display mode and the results of borderless, windowed, direct fullscreen, and gamescope tests.
- Whether sound continues, whether input still works, and how the game or desktop recovers.
- The preserved
steam-<APPID>.logfor a Proton title, with the relevant excerpt and timestamp.
Keep logs attached to the configuration that produced them. A log captured after changing Proton, gamescope, display mode, or drivers may no longer describe the failure you are asking others to diagnose.

What not to change first
- Do not begin by replacing every driver, desktop session, and Proton version at once; you will lose the comparison that identifies the trigger.
- Do not assume that audio continuing means the game process is healthy or that a renderer switch will solve it.
- Do not stack multiple fullscreen, window, gamescope, and renderer flags without recording their order and purpose.
- Do not treat
PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1as a performance recommendation; it changes from DXVK/Vulkan to wined3d/OpenGL specifically for testing. - Do not assume gamescope behaves identically on every desktop or build. Its documented controls are a way to isolate presentation, not a promise of identical latency or multi-monitor behavior.
A compact, repeatable sequence
- Reproduce once and record native/Proton status, session, GPU and driver, monitors, refresh rates, display mode, input, and audio behavior.
- Switch the game’s own setting to borderless windowed, then ordinary windowed if needed.
- Use one documented Steam option such as
-windowedonly when the in-game setting cannot enforce the mode. - Remove unrelated launch flags and retest after a complete restart.
- Try
gamescope -b -- %command%; test-for documented-w/-hvalues only as separate experiments. - Compare X11 and Wayland with the same game and options.
- For Proton, capture
PROTON_LOG=1 %command%, preservesteam-<APPID>.log, and test one Proton version at a time. - Use
PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1only as a renderer comparison. - If several games are affected, verify 32-bit OpenGL support and graphics-driver installation.
- Report the exact failing and working configurations, not just the symptom.
The practical verdict is straightforward: treat exclusive fullscreen as the first variable, use borderless or windowed mode as the safest immediate workaround, and use gamescope, session comparisons, Proton logs, and graphics-stack checks to turn a vague Alt+Tab freeze into a reproducible diagnosis.
