A Steam Free Weekend is temporary access to a paid game’s full base game, not a permanent license. When the event ends, Steam removes the temporary free package. The game can remain visible in your library, but Steam says you can only uninstall it unless you buy the full version. A Free-to-Play (F2P) game is different: it is offered under a free download license, so its access is not governed by a Free Weekend countdown. F2P games can still sell optional items, DLC, or other content.

Steam explains the two models in its Free Weekends documentation and Free To Play documentation. The key distinction is temporary access to a normally paid base game versus a game distributed under a free license.
What a Steam Free Weekend actually grants
A Free Weekend lets customers access the full base game for a limited promotional period. Steam’s documentation says the promotion uses the game’s existing App ID rather than a separate demo build. During the event, a temporary free package appears alongside the standard paid package on the store page.

That arrangement explains why the experience can look like ownership while the event is active. You download the regular game and play the base-game offering during the approved window, but the license attached to the temporary package is conditional on the event still running. It is not a permanent addition to your account.

It is not the same as a demo
A demo is normally a separate product or build with its own limitations. Steam describes a Free Weekend as temporary access to the full base game through the current App ID. That distinction matters for expectations: the promotional package is designed to let you try the actual base game, but it still disappears when the promotion closes.
The event has a deadline, not a number of hours per player
The clock is tied to the event’s published start and end time. It does not normally begin when you first launch the game, and it is not a personal trial period that resets for each account. Steam describes a typical schedule as Thursday at 10:00 a.m. Pacific through Monday at 10:00 a.m. Pacific, or a long four-day weekend. That is a pattern, not a guarantee for every title.
What happens when the promotion ends?
Once the event closes, Steam automatically removes the free package from the game’s store page. Participants may still see the game listed in their Steam libraries, but the library entry does not represent a continuing free license. Steam’s official wording is:

“Once the Free Weekend ends, the free package is automatically removed from your store page. Players who participated will still see your game listed in their Steam libraries, but they’ll only be able to uninstall it – continued play requires purchasing the full version.”
In practical terms, the result is a change in license status rather than a disappearance of the title from your account.

The end-of-event sequence
- Before the deadline: the temporary package is valid and you can use the game under the event’s terms.
- At the deadline: Steam closes the promotion and removes the free package from the store page.
- After the deadline: the library listing can remain visible for participants, but the temporary package no longer authorizes continued play.
- To resume playing: purchase the full version. The paid license, rather than the expired promotional package, is what restores ongoing access.
Steam does not say that the library entry itself will be deleted. Therefore, seeing the title in your library after the event is expected and should not be interpreted as a permanent entitlement.
Can you keep playing a Free Weekend game after it ends?
Not on the temporary package. Steam’s documented answer is that continued play requires purchasing the full version. The library entry may remain, but it functions as a record of the title and an access point to the store rather than proof that the free promotion is still active.
How to decide before the clock runs out
- Open the game’s store page in the Steam client or on Steam’s website.
- Read the Free Weekend callout and its “time remaining” indicator. Use that event-specific timer instead of relying on the usual Thursday-to-Monday pattern.
- Check whether the page presents a temporary-event offer and a separate purchase option for the standard game.
- If you want uninterrupted access, buy the full version before or after the event. The purchase is the license Steam identifies as necessary for continued play.
- If you do not buy it, expect the promotional access to stop when the event closes even if the title remains listed in your library.
A Free Weekend may be paired with a discount, but the existence, amount, and end time of that discount are specific to the event. Treat the current store page and its announcement as authoritative rather than assuming every promotion uses the same price or duration.
Why the game can remain in your library
Steam separates the library record from the license that permits play. Participation can leave the title visible in your library after the package has been removed. That behavior is useful for finding the store page again, but it does not convert the temporary package into a perpetual copy.
Library listing versus playable license
- Library listing: identifies the game associated with your account and may remain after the event.
- Temporary package: the promotional entitlement that allowed play during the Free Weekend.
- Full purchase: the paid license required for play after the temporary entitlement ends.
If the post-event library page offers only an uninstall action or directs you to purchase, that is consistent with Steam’s documented behavior. Reinstalling the same temporary files does not create a new license; access is controlled by the entitlement, not simply by whether game data is present on your drive.

How Free-to-Play licensing is different
Steam defines a Free-to-Play game as one customers can download under a free license. The license is not created by a weekend promotion, so the end of a Free Weekend does not switch off access to an F2P title.

Steam notes that some F2P games contain in-game purchases. Those purchases can cover items, services, progression-related content, or other features chosen by the publisher. The free license describes the right to obtain and use the game under its stated terms; it does not promise that every optional element costs nothing.
DLC and purchases can exist in either model
Steam’s store documentation treats downloadable content and in-game purchases as monetization methods available to both F2P and paid games. A paid game can sell DLC, and an F2P game can sell DLC or in-game items. The presence of a shop therefore does not tell you whether a title is a Free Weekend promotion or a Free-to-Play release.
A later change to free distribution is a separate event
A publisher can choose to change a game’s commercial model, including moving a formerly paid title to free distribution. That is a product and licensing decision separate from a temporary Free Weekend. Check the current store listing for the game’s present license and purchase requirements rather than inferring them from an older promotion.
Costs after a Free Weekend versus costs in an F2P game

The financially important question is therefore not “Was I able to download it for free?” Both models can answer yes during the relevant circumstance. Ask instead whether the free access comes from a time-limited package or from the game’s standing free license.

How to verify the exact deadline
Because schedules vary, use the individual game page rather than a generic calendar.
- Search for the title in Steam’s Store tab.
- Open the title’s current store page.
- Find the Free Weekend callout and note the displayed time remaining or end date.
- Read the linked announcement if the page provides one; it may state the event’s regional timing or any associated purchase discount.
- Plan around the displayed deadline, including your own time zone and enough margin to finish downloads or sessions before the event closes.
Steam’s Thursday 10:00 a.m. Pacific to Monday 10:00 a.m. Pacific example is useful for recognizing a typical long-weekend promotion, but it should not replace the title-specific timer. The official Free Weekends page is the platform-level reference for how the feature works.

“The game is still in my library, so I must own it.”
Not necessarily. Steam says participants can continue to see the game listed after the free package is removed. The listing is not equivalent to a paid license.
“The game was free, but now Steam asks me to buy it.”
That is the expected transition for a Free Weekend. The temporary package ended, and Steam requires the full purchase for continued play.
“An F2P game asks me to pay for something.”
That does not contradict the F2P label. Steam specifically allows optional in-game purchases, and DLC can be sold in both free and paid games. Review the item description and price before confirming a transaction.

“The event page says it ends Monday, but my local clock shows another time.”
Use the countdown or deadline displayed on the specific store page and account for the time zone shown there. The generic four-day example is not a promise that every event ends at the same local hour.
“I downloaded the game but did not finish installing it before the deadline.”
The promotion is controlled by the event window and its package entitlement, not by how much of the download you completed. After the deadline, the temporary license no longer provides continued play; buying the full version is the documented remedy.
What Steam’s developer documentation does—and does not—promise
Steam says Free Weekends generally require approval from the Steam team and recommends that developers contact Steam at least a month in advance. Those are arrangements for publishers, not steps a player must complete to retain access.
The documentation also says eligible games can generally run a Free Weekend once per calendar year. “Generally” matters: it describes platform guidance for planning events, not a guarantee that every game will receive an annual promotion or that a player can request one.
Steam provides developers with participation, conversion, and other event metrics in the Steamworks Dashboard. It does not publish a universal conversion percentage in the cited documentation. You should therefore treat each promotion on its own terms rather than assuming a typical share of players will buy the game afterward.
A practical decision framework
Choose the full purchase when
- You want access after the posted event deadline.
- You are satisfied that the base game is the content you intend to keep using.
- The current store page shows a discount that makes buying during the event worthwhile for you.
Stop at the deadline when
- You only wanted a time-limited trial.
- You are not ready to pay for the full license.
- You understand that the title may remain in your library but will not remain playable on the temporary package.
Treat an F2P title differently when
- You are evaluating optional purchases separately from the free download license.
- You need to know which modes, items, or expansions are included without payment.
- You are checking the current store description because publishers can change offerings over time.
Bottom line
A Steam Free Weekend is a timed pass to a paid game’s full base game. At the event’s end, Steam removes the free package; the title can stay in your library, but continued play requires buying the full version. Free-to-Play is a standing free download license, although optional in-game purchases and DLC may still cost money. Check the individual game’s countdown and store terms whenever the distinction matters.
