Steam Free Weekend access is temporary. You can play the base game during the event, normally from Thursday at 10 a.m. Pacific to Monday at 10 a.m. Pacific, but the exact event listing controls. When the event ends, Steam removes the free package. You may still see the game in your library, but continuing to play requires buying it. Save and achievement carryover are game-specific, while a later purchase is covered by Steam’s normal refund rules if it meets the current conditions.
What a Steam Free Weekend actually gives you
Valve describes a Free Weekend as a time-limited promotion that lets players temporarily access and play an eligible game at no charge, usually over a long four-day weekend. The promotion opens the game’s base package through the existing Steam app rather than creating a permanent license.
The usual schedule is Thursday at 10 a.m. Pacific through Monday at 10 a.m. Pacific. That is a typical pattern, not a guarantee for every title. A publisher can use different dates or times, so treat the start and end time shown on the game’s event page as authoritative. Convert the displayed Pacific time to your local time and allow for the possibility that the event ends exactly at the stated minute.

A Free Weekend is therefore a trial window, not a “free to keep” promotion. Steam may leave an entry for the title in your library after the event, but that listing does not prove that you still own a playable license.
What happens when the event ends?
The free license expires
Once the advertised period closes, Steam automatically removes the free package from your account. Launching the title may show a purchase prompt or prevent the game from starting. The game can remain visible in your library because Steam retains the app history, but visibility is not continued entitlement.
You can uninstall the game
If you decide not to buy it, you can uninstall the downloaded files through the normal Steam library controls. Removing the local installation does not change the event’s expiration or delete a purchase, because no paid license was created by the promotion.

Buying after the weekend
Purchasing the full version after the event grants the normal paid license for that edition. Check the store page for the exact edition and any discount attached to the event; a Free Weekend does not itself guarantee a particular price once the promotion ends.

Will your save file carry over if you buy the game?
There is no universal Steam promise that Free Weekend progress will transfer. Save behavior depends on the individual game, its save locations, and whether the developer has enabled and correctly implemented Steam Cloud.
Why the answer varies by game
Steam Cloud can store several kinds of game data, including save files, but each game chooses what to synchronize and when. A title may save locally only, synchronize selected files, use a separate account system, or handle progression on its own servers. Two games in the same Free Weekend can therefore behave differently.
Steam’s Cloud guidance also warns that lost cloud data is unlikely to be recoverable. Cloud synchronization is a convenience, not a backup guarantee. A conflict, disabled synchronization, corrupted file, or unsupported save location can prevent a transfer even when the game displays a cloud icon.
How to protect progress before the event ends
- Check the game’s store and event announcements. Look for a current statement from the developer about Free Weekend saves, cross-progression, or account-based progression. Do not infer the answer from another game.
- Confirm Steam Cloud is enabled. In the Steam client, open Steam > Settings > Cloud and make sure cloud synchronization is enabled. The game can still opt out or use only selected data.
- Let synchronization finish. Exit the game normally and wait for Steam to show that cloud status is up to date before shutting down the client or changing devices.
- Keep a local copy when the game supports ordinary save files. Find the developer’s documented save location and copy the relevant files to another folder. Do not overwrite files blindly; keep the original folder intact until you confirm the purchased installation reads the save.
- After buying, resolve any cloud conflict carefully. If Steam asks whether to use local or cloud data, choose the copy containing your latest progress. Compare timestamps and, when possible, preserve both versions before selecting one.
If the developer has not made a clear statement, the accurate expectation is uncertainty: your progress may carry over, but Steam’s general Free Weekend documentation does not establish that it will.

Do achievements earned during a Free Weekend stay on your account?
Steam’s general Free Weekend information does not promise that achievements earned during the event will persist or unlock after you purchase the game. Achievement handling is therefore game-specific. Some titles may record progress through Steam normally; others may delay, suppress, or re-evaluate unlocks when the free package is removed.
For a definitive answer, check the game developer’s current event announcement, support page, or discussion for that specific promotion. Avoid treating another game’s behavior as a platform-wide rule. The absence of a general promise does not prove that achievements are always deleted, and it does not prove that they are always retained.
Reviews and trading cards during the trial
Reviews
Free Weekend participants may post Steam reviews. Steam categorizes those reviews as coming from non-Steam purchases, so they do not affect the game’s review score while the account has only the free access. If you later buy the game, Steam can treat the review as a purchase review under its normal systems.
Trading cards
Free Weekend players do not receive Steam Trading Card drops simply by playing the trial. Card drops become available only if the player has purchased the game on Steam or activated a product key, subject to the game’s normal card eligibility rules.

Can you refund the game after buying it?
The Free Weekend itself is not a paid transaction to refund. If you purchase the title after trying it, that purchase is evaluated under Steam’s standard game-refund policy and any applicable exceptions.
The standard conditions
Steam’s refund policy says the general offer applies when you request a refund within 14 days of purchase and have played the game for less than two hours. Both conditions are stated as part of the standard offer. The policy page was last updated April 23, 2024, so check the live policy before relying on these terms.

Steam describes refunds as a way to reduce the risk of purchasing titles, not as a method for obtaining games for free. Policy exceptions and product-specific rules can apply, so read the current refund page when submitting a request.
Does Free Weekend playtime use up your refund allowance?
Steam’s general Free Weekend information does not establish a universal rule for how event playtime is treated against the two-hour threshold on a later paid purchase. Do not assume that the trial either consumes or preserves refund eligibility without checking the current Steam policy and any game-specific notice. The enforceable reference is the refund decision on the paid transaction, including Steam’s recorded playtime and applicable exceptions.

How to request a refund
- Open Steam Support and sign in to the account that purchased the game.
- Select the game from your purchases and choose the option to request a refund.
- Review the displayed purchase date, playtime, and refund method.
- Submit the request and keep the confirmation. If approved, Steam says the refund is issued within one week, depending on the selected payment method.
If your request falls outside 14 days or reaches two hours of paid-game playtime, you can still submit it for consideration, but the standard guarantee no longer applies.
A practical decision checklist before buying
Use the short window efficiently rather than waiting until the final minutes:
- Record the exact end time from the event page, including its time zone.
- Test the part of the game you would actually play: onboarding, controls, multiplayer matchmaking, performance, accessibility options, and the first progression loop.
- Check the edition and price that will remain available after the event; free access does not guarantee a permanent discount.
- Find the developer’s save and achievement guidance before investing many hours.
- Allow time for a clean exit and cloud synchronization before the event closes.
- Keep the refund conditions in view if you buy: the normal offer is a request within 14 days and under two hours of playtime, with policy exceptions possible.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Assuming the library entry means ownership
A library listing can remain after Steam removes the free package. Ownership and play access are separate from the listing, so verify whether the store page asks you to purchase the game.

Cloud support is selected and implemented by the game. Check the title’s cloud indicator and developer documentation, and keep a local copy when possible.
Treating achievements as guaranteed
The platform’s general Free Weekend material does not promise achievement persistence. Seek a game-specific answer before you make achievement progress a deciding factor.
Waiting until the advertised day changes
Typical Thursday-to-Monday timing is only a pattern. Publishers can schedule a different window, and the event page’s exact time takes precedence.
Buying solely to create a refund experiment
Steam states that refunds are intended to remove purchase risk, not provide free games. Buy only if the paid license is worth keeping, then use the refund policy as a safety net rather than as the purpose of the transaction.
