What does “Free Weekend” mean on Steam?
Steamworks defines a Free Weekend as a time-limited promotion that lets players temporarily access and play an eligible game for free. It is a trial window, not a permanent giveaway: the promotion provides access to the base game through its current app ID, while a demo is a separate build with a separate demo app ID. A free-to-play game, by contrast, remains available at no cost.
#1 Best Overall
- How to Play: 2 Squads compete in 3 rounds. The object is to get your Squad to guess the words on the cards.
- Designed for 4-20+ players ages 17+: Great for small groups and large parties. Make a night of it, or sneak in a quickie.
- 3 Rounds Per Game: Round 1 – Anything Goes. Round 2 – One Word. Round 3 – Act It Out.
- What’s Inside: 300 cards carefully created to make you laugh. Endless entertainment where no game will be like the last.
- Pro Tip: House Rules Make the Game as Easy or Difficult as You Like: You will compete, you will laugh, you will blush, you will learn something, and you will have fun.
What happens when the promotion ends?
When the event ends, Steam removes the temporary free package from the store page. Participants may still see the game in their Steam library, but they can only uninstall it; continued play requires purchasing the full version.
Is every Free Weekend four days long?
No. Steamworks says Free Weekends typically run from Thursday at 10 AM Pacific to Monday at 10 AM Pacific, but that pattern is not a guarantee for a particular game. Follow the event-specific announcement for its actual cutoff. Steam also says events may be spaced out to avoid overlapping promotions.
