The Steam Frame currently available is an LCD headset, not an OLED model. Its documented hardware uses two 2160×2160-per-eye LCD panels, pancake lenses, and 72Hz, 90Hz, 120Hz, with 144Hz listed as experimental. Valve has not confirmed an OLED Steam Frame for sale, a release date, pricing, or specifications. References to “deckard-oled” in source code suggest an explored prototype branch, not a product announcement.
For gaming, OLED could eventually deliver darker blacks and stronger perceived contrast, especially in dark VR scenes. That is a theoretical benefit: there is no shipping OLED Steam Frame or controlled OLED-versus-LCD test. The current LCD headset is the only engineered, documented choice, and its pancake optics, eye-tracked foveated streaming, wireless design, resolution, and refresh modes matter at least as much as panel technology.
Steam Frame OLED vs. LCD at a glance
There are two different questions hidden in this comparison: what the Steam Frame is today, and what an unannounced OLED revision might improve. The first has firm specifications. The second has only limited evidence from software references and reporting.

Is the Steam Frame OLED or LCD?
The shipping design is LCD. Each eye receives a 2160×2160 LCD image, and the panel uses red, green, and blue subpixels rather than an OLED or Micro-OLED arrangement. The choice is paired with pancake optics, which are intended to correct aberrations while keeping the headset compact and preserving useful clarity toward the edges of the view.
Reports in 2025 found “deckard-oled” and “deckard-plano” references in Steam Frame-related source code. Those names show that Valve appears to have explored alternative display or optical configurations. They do not establish that an OLED headset exists as a finished device. Internal branches can be experiments, development targets, or abandoned work. The reporting explicitly cautions that an OLED model may never ship.
What an OLED panel could change in VR gaming
OLED pixels can turn themselves off, so a dark pixel can approach black instead of relying on an LCD backlight that remains on behind the panel. In a game with caves, space scenes, night driving, or a dark user interface, that can produce deeper blacks and higher perceived contrast. This is the most credible reason to wait for an OLED revision.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →That advantage is not a measured Steam Frame result. No controlled comparison exists between a shipping LCD Frame and a shipping OLED Frame. Actual image quality would also depend on lens glare, persistence, brightness, resolution, subpixel geometry, refresh timing, eye tracking, and the quality of the streamed image. A theoretical OLED benefit should therefore be treated as one criterion, not as proof that an OLED revision would look better in every scene.
Black level and contrast
LCD is illuminated by a backlight, so very dark areas can retain some glow. OLED’s self-emissive pixels can suppress that glow. The difference is most noticeable when the surrounding scene is dark enough for stray light and lens reflections not to dominate. Pancake lenses can introduce glare or “bloom” around bright objects; a better black level cannot remove optical artifacts created after the panel.

Brightness and highlights
There is no published Steam Frame OLED brightness specification, and the available evidence does not establish whether a future OLED would be brighter, dimmer, or equally bright. OLED and LCD implementations use different power and thermal strategies, so panel type alone cannot predict highlight intensity or sustained brightness.
Persistence and motion
Pixel response and persistence affect motion clarity in a headset. OLED can offer very fast pixel transitions, but perceived motion also depends on how long each frame is displayed, the selected refresh mode, tracking quality, and the rendering pipeline. The current Frame can operate at 72Hz, 90Hz, and 120Hz, with 144Hz identified as experimental. There is no controlled measurement showing that a hypothetical OLED version would reduce motion blur or latency relative to those modes.
Color and subpixel structure
The current LCD uses an RGB subpixel layout at 2160×2160 per eye. A future OLED could use a different arrangement, and the apparent sharpness of text and fine geometry would depend on that layout as well as pixel count. Without a confirmed panel, resolution, or subpixel map, claims that an OLED Frame would be sharper or more colorful are speculation.
Refresh rates: 72Hz, 90Hz, 120Hz and experimental 144Hz
Refresh rate determines how often the headset updates the image. Higher modes can make head movement and fast action feel smoother, but they increase rendering and bandwidth demands. The documented Frame modes are:
- 72Hz: the lowest listed mode and one of the defaults used when the headset is conserving power.
- 90Hz: the other default noted in review coverage, balancing smoothness and power use for many sessions.
- 120Hz: a supported high-refresh option when the game, render workload, and connection can sustain it.
- 144Hz: listed as experimental, so it should not be treated as a universal or guaranteed operating mode.
A future OLED panel would not automatically add a higher refresh rate. The display controller, processor, wireless link, game frame rate, and thermal envelope all have to support it. Conversely, the current LCD’s 120Hz mode may be the more practical choice than chasing an experimental 144Hz setting that a particular title or streaming setup cannot hold.

Resolution, pancake optics, and the clarity you actually see
At 2160×2160 pixels per eye, the Frame has a substantial amount of image detail to deliver. The panel is only one part of the visual chain. Valve chose pancake optics for aberration correction, compactness, and edge-to-edge clarity. Those lenses can let you read menus or inspect a scene without moving your head as much as with simpler optics, although the final result still depends on fit, eye position, rendered resolution, and lens cleanliness.
Eye tracking enables foveated streaming: the system can send or render more detail where you are looking and less detail in peripheral regions. The included dedicated wireless adapter is central to that design. A stable link can preserve detail and reduce the compromises required by transmitting a full high-resolution image uniformly. If the wireless path is congested or unstable, an OLED panel would not fix compression artifacts, dropped frames, or latency.
This is why a display-type comparison should not be reduced to “OLED has better contrast.” A well-positioned LCD image through clear pancake lenses, with reliable eye tracking and streaming, can be more useful in play than a theoretically superior panel fed by an unstable or heavily compressed signal.
Power, heat, battery, and weight
The known Frame has a 21.6Wh battery and weighs 435g. Those figures describe the documented LCD product. No OLED battery capacity, runtime, thermal measurement, or weight has been announced, so there is no factual basis for promising that an OLED revision would last longer or feel lighter.
Review measurements provide useful context rather than a universal guarantee. In one Half-Life: Alyx session, standalone play drew approximately 17–19W, while streaming the game from a PC drew approximately 10W. The lower streamed figure reflects that particular review setup and workload; it is not a Valve battery-life rating. A streamed game can move some rendering work to the PC, while the headset still powers its displays, tracking, wireless radios, and decoding hardware.

OLED’s power behavior is scene-dependent: dark content can reduce pixel power, while bright full-screen content can raise it. LCD backlights behave differently. Without an OLED prototype and matched measurements, neither technology can be declared the battery winner for Steam Frame.
Streaming-first design and standalone play
Jeremy Selan of Valve described the product as “a streaming first device.” The headset includes a dedicated wireless adapter for PC streaming, while its Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor and onboard storage also support standalone use. PC Gamer’s review guidance was that “the best way to play on the Steam Frame is over the included wireless adapter,” a recommendation attributed to that review rather than to Valve.
Streaming is particularly relevant to the OLED-versus-LCD decision. A display can show only the signal it receives. Eye-tracked foveated streaming, wireless stability, decoder latency, and the PC’s render settings may change perceived clarity and responsiveness more than a panel swap. If your priority is wireless PC VR today, the current LCD Frame already provides the feature that matters most: a purpose-built link rather than relying solely on a general network.
For standalone games, the headset’s local processor, thermal limits, storage capacity, and battery become more important. Lawrence Yang of Valve described the goal as “a new way to play your entire Steam library.” That statement describes the platform ambition, not a promise that every title will run identically in standalone and streamed modes.
Should you buy the LCD Steam Frame or wait for OLED?
Buy the current LCD model when
- You want a headset now rather than an indefinite future option.
- Wireless PC streaming through the included adapter is a major reason for buying.
- 2160×2160-per-eye resolution, pancake optics, eye tracking, and 120Hz support meet your needs.
- You prefer documented hardware over an unconfirmed revision.
- You can accept that 144Hz is experimental and that defaults may be 72Hz or 90Hz depending on power mode.
Wait when
- Deep blacks are your highest priority, particularly for dark games and night scenes.
- You are comfortable with an indefinite timeline and the possibility that no OLED version will ship.
- You do not need a headset until Valve publishes an actual OLED product with specifications and availability.
Waiting is a decision to forgo confirmed hardware for a possible improvement. A source-code branch is not a reservation list, launch plan, or guarantee of compatibility with the current Frame’s software and accessories.

Can you upgrade the Steam Frame screen later?
There is no documented user-upgrade path for replacing the Steam Frame’s LCD panels with OLED panels. The display, optics, electronics, thermal design, firmware, and mechanical alignment are integrated into a headset. Even if Valve eventually sells an OLED model, that would most likely be a separate product rather than a panel module users install at home. Do not buy the LCD model assuming an OLED screen can be added later.
Storage and practical accessories
The directly compatible storage accessory is a microSDXC card. Coverage says the Frame accepts cards up to 2TB, can run games from a reasonably speedy card, and can share cards with Steam Deck and Steam Machine. Choose a card with sufficient sustained performance rather than treating the capacity number alone as a guarantee of load times.
A USB-C power bank is another practical option because the headset can be powered while playing. Replacement straps, hot-swappable battery straps, prescription inserts, and comfort accessories may become useful categories, but availability and compatibility should be checked for the specific headset revision. None of those accessories changes the LCD-versus-OLED image characteristics.
A sensible setup for the current LCD headset
- Start at 90Hz. It is one of the documented default modes and offers a practical balance between motion smoothness and power demand.
- Use 120Hz when the workload is stable. Select it for games and streaming conditions that can maintain the required frame rate without dropped frames.
- Try 72Hz for longer battery-focused sessions. It is a documented mode and may reduce display and rendering demands, although the exact runtime depends on the game and power profile.
- Treat 144Hz as experimental. Test it only when the title, render settings, and wireless path remain stable; do not assume every game supports it equally.
- Position the headset carefully. Pancake lenses provide useful edge clarity, but eye alignment and fit still determine how much of the 2160×2160-per-eye image appears sharp.
- Prefer the dedicated wireless adapter for PC VR. A clean link helps the eye-tracked foveated stream deliver its intended detail and latency.
- Keep storage performance in mind. If you install games on microSD, use a reasonably fast card and leave enough free space for updates.
What evidence would justify waiting for OLED?
A meaningful OLED buying decision needs more than a code name. Look for an official product announcement that identifies the panel, resolution, refresh modes, brightness, battery, weight, price, and availability. Independent testing should then compare black level, persistence, lens glare, sustained brightness, wireless latency, battery draw, and image quality under matched settings.
Until those facts exist, “OLED is better” is too broad. OLED has a plausible black-level advantage; the current LCD has the only verified Steam Frame specification and a complete feature set that already includes pancake optics, eye tracking, high resolution, wireless streaming, and multiple refresh modes.
Bottom line
The Steam Frame is LCD today. Buy it if you value immediate access to Valve’s wireless, streaming-first VR platform and its documented 2160×2160-per-eye, pancake-lens design. Wait for OLED only if darker blacks matter more than having a headset now and you accept both an indefinite timeline and the possibility that Valve never ships an OLED revision. No measured OLED advantage, release date, price, battery figure, or upgrade path has been confirmed.
