Valve may be developing an OLED-based Steam Frame refresh, reportedly codenamed Plano, but it is not a confirmed product. Code references found in Valve’s public Steam Frame kernel source describe a possible headset with 3,552 × 3,840 pixels per eye—about 2.93 times the current Steam Frame’s per-eye pixel count. The same reports indicate that hardware bandwidth could make a lower-resolution mode the normal setting.
What has been reported about Steam Frame OLED
Reports from Steam Frame Hub, Road to VR and Notebookcheck published on October 14–15, 2026 point to an OLED development configuration inside Valve’s public Steam Frame kernel source. The codename associated with the configuration is Plano.
That evidence does not establish a retail headset. Road to VR notes that the references could describe internal testing or an abandoned configuration, while continued repository activity only suggests that work may have continued. No reviewed Valve announcement confirms Plano, a launch window or commercial availability.

Steam Frame Hub characterized the project as a mid-generation refresh “mainly characterized by a pair of new displays.” That is a description from the publication’s report, not a statement from Valve or a named Valve executive.

The “nearly three times” claim comes from multiplying the reported dimensions. A 3,552 × 3,840 panel contains 13,639,680 pixels per eye, compared with 4,665,600 for a 2,160 × 2,160 panel. That is approximately 2.93 times as many pixels, not a separately published benchmark.
The reports call the panel Micro-OLED or apparent Micro-OLED. They speculate that it could resemble the type of panel used in Samsung’s Galaxy XR, but no Plano supplier has been identified. There are also no independent optical, contrast, brightness or motion tests for the rumored configuration.

Why the headset might not run at its native resolution
Display bandwidth is the key constraint
The reported default output is 1,776 × 1,920 pixels per eye, substantially below the panel’s 3,552 × 3,840 native resolution. Steam Frame Hub and Notebookcheck attribute that limitation to the display bandwidth available from the reported Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 platform.

The available evidence does not show that the headset could drive both panels at full native resolution in normal software.

Foveated scaling is not the same as foveated rendering
The reported implementation is called foveated scaling. In this description, the headset’s display controller increases pixel density around the area where the user is looking while scaling other areas differently. It is a hardware display-output technique.
That differs from game-side foveated rendering, where a game renders the center of the user’s view at higher quality and reduces rendering work in the peripheral view. The reports do not establish how many applications would support Plano-specific rendering features or how much visual benefit users would see in practice.

Is Plano a real product or only a prototype?
What the repository timeline shows

Steam Frame Hub has offered a late-2027 estimate, but that is the publication’s opinion rather than a Valve schedule. A branch name can represent a prototype, an internal experiment or work that is later cancelled.

- There is no verified launch date, launch region, reservation program or price.
- The panel manufacturer and final optical design are unknown.
- No reviewed source provides hands-on testing, final software support or a promise of native-resolution operation.

Higher panel density could improve fine detail and reduce visible pixel structure, while OLED could provide stronger black levels than LCD. Those are technology-level expectations, not measured results from Plano. The final experience would also depend on lenses, calibration, persistence, brightness and software—not just the panel’s pixel count.

Should you buy the current Steam Frame or wait?
Buy the current model when you need a headset now
If you need a known, supported device, the current Steam Frame is the only confirmed option in this comparison. Its LCD resolution, software behavior, price and availability can be evaluated as an existing product rather than inferred from source-code references.
Wait when display density is your priority
Waiting makes sense only if you can tolerate an indefinite timeline and are specifically interested in a possible OLED panel or higher per-eye resolution. Do not reserve money or make a purchase decision based on the late-2027 estimate; it is not an announced date.
Do not assume native resolution is guaranteed
Even if Plano becomes a shipping headset, the reported 1,776 × 1,920 default and 2,368 × 2,560 experimental mode suggest that the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 platform may not routinely drive 3,552 × 3,840 per eye. Valve would need to confirm the final display pipeline, supported modes and software requirements before native-resolution performance could be judged.
Bottom line
Plano is a credible-looking but unconfirmed Steam Frame OLED development effort. The reported panels would raise per-eye pixel count from 4.67 million to 13.64 million, yet the available evidence also points to lower practical output modes caused by display-bandwidth limits. Until Valve confirms the hardware, timing, price and operating modes, treat Plano as a development configuration—not a product you can buy or reliably plan around.
