Steam Frame is Valve’s wireless VR headset built around two use modes: it is primarily intended to stream a player’s Steam library from a PC with low latency, but it can also run supported VR and non-VR experiences on the headset itself. That makes it more than a PC display accessory, although the published information does not yet establish real-world latency, comfort, battery endurance, image quality, or how individual games perform.
What is Steam Frame?
Valve describes Steam Frame as “a standalone virtual reality headset designed primarily for low-latency streaming of player’s Steam Library from a PC, while also supporting standalone experiences for both VR and Non-VR.” In practical terms, the same headset is intended to handle streamed PC VR, streamed or displayed non-VR games, and applications that run locally without a computer.
The streaming-first emphasis matters. Steam Frame is not presented as a headset whose entire library must be installed locally. Its main path is wireless access to a Steam library running on a PC, while standalone support provides a second path for compatible software when a PC connection is unavailable. Valve says some specifications may change before availability, so the product page remains the authority for final hardware details: Steam Frame product page.
Can Steam Frame play games without a PC?
Yes, for supported standalone software. Valve’s Steamworks documentation explicitly says games can run on the headset without a connection to a PC, alongside streamed PC content. That does not mean every Steam game will run locally. A particular title’s support, performance and control requirements must be checked individually; general standalone compatibility is not proof that a specific game works well.
#1 Best Overall
For PC-based VR, Steam Frame is designed to stream the game from a computer over a wireless connection. For local software, the application runs on the headset’s processor and storage. Valve’s title-specific Steam Frame Verified criteria and per-game labels are more useful than assuming that any game visible in a Steam library is suitable for local play.
Steam Frame specifications
The following are manufacturer-listed specifications, not independent measurements. Valve notes that some values could change before the headset becomes available.
| Component | Valve-listed detail |
|---|---|
| Processor | 4nm Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 platform, ARM64 architecture |
| Memory | 16GB unified LPDDR5X |
| Storage | 256GB or 1TB UFS, plus a microSD card slot |
| Display | 2160 × 2160 LCD resolution per eye |
| Refresh rate | 72–144Hz; 144Hz is listed as experimental |
| Optics | Custom pancake lenses |
| Field of view | Up to 110 degrees |
| Battery | Rechargeable 21.6Wh lithium-ion battery |
| Charging and data | Rear USB-C 2.0 port; charge input up to 45W |
| Fit targets | 60–70mm target IPD range; maximum eyeglass width of 140mm |
Those numbers describe the hardware’s intended capability, not measured frame rates, battery life, optical clarity or comfort. Valve has not supplied an independent runtime test in the published material, and headset weight is not stated in the available specifications.

Tracking, passthrough and streaming technology
Headset and eye tracking
Steam Frame uses inside-out tracking. Valve lists four outward-facing monochrome cameras for headset and controller tracking, two inward-facing cameras for eye tracking, and infrared illuminators intended to help tracking and passthrough in low light.
Passthrough
The base headset’s passthrough is monochrome according to Valve’s specification. Do not treat it as a color-passthrough device out of the box. Valve separately identifies the Arcturus Vision Camera as an accessory for color passthrough and spatial video.
Foveated streaming
Valve also describes foveated streaming, a technique that can prioritize detail in the area being viewed while reducing work elsewhere in the streamed image. The published description establishes the feature’s design intent, but not a measured bandwidth reduction or latency figure.

SteamVR and OpenXR compatibility
Steamworks documentation identifies compatibility with both SteamVR and OpenXR. That covers streamed PC VR content as well as applications designed to run on the headset itself. Compatibility with an API or runtime does not guarantee that every game supports every feature; title-specific labels and developer documentation remain necessary for reliable expectations. See Valve’s Steamworks Steam Frame documentation for the platform-level details.

Valve lists split-layout controllers with full-size magnetic TMR thumbsticks, analog triggers, bumpers, Steam, menu and view buttons, dual-stage grip buttons, haptics and capacitive finger tracking. They communicate with the headset over a dedicated 2.4GHz link and are tracked by the headset’s cameras.
Each controller uses one replaceable AA battery. Valve lists up to 40 hours of controller battery life; that is a manufacturer figure rather than an independently tested endurance result. The headset itself has a modular headstrap with integrated dual audio drivers and a rear battery.

Prescription inserts
Valve names Zenni prescription inserts as a compatible option. The listed 140mm maximum eyeglass width and 60–70mm target IPD range are fit guidance, not a guarantee that every frame or wearer will be comfortable. Check the insert maker’s current sizing information before ordering.
Color camera
The Arcturus Vision Camera is a separate compatible accessory for color passthrough and spatial video. It is not evidence that the standard headset cameras provide color passthrough.

Replacement fit parts and storage
A Valve hardware announcement lists a replacement accessory kit containing one face gasket, one head cushion and one standard light blocker. Steam Frame also supports microSD expansion in addition to its internal 256GB or 1TB storage options. Current card-model compatibility, regional stock and pricing should be verified from Valve or an authorized seller before purchase. Valve’s hardware announcements are collected at Steam Hardware announcements.
What remains unknown
The available official material establishes Valve’s design and specifications, not a finished review verdict. There is no independent evidence here for comfort over long sessions, optical quality, wireless latency, battery endurance, headset weight, thermal behavior or the performance of particular games. Regional pricing, release availability and specific retailer listings are likewise not established. Those details should be treated as open questions until Valve or independent testers publish verifiable information.
Early assessment
Steam Frame’s clearest proposition is flexibility: one wireless headset for streamed PC VR, local VR applications and supported non-VR Steam experiences. The Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 platform, expandable storage, pancake optics, eye tracking and optional accessories indicate a device designed to bridge PC and standalone use rather than replace either library outright. Whether that combination delivers convincing latency, comfort and game compatibility will require independent testing after final hardware and software are available.
