Steam Frame does not use an OLED panel. Valve’s 2026 hardware specification lists a 2160 × 2160 LCD for each eye with a 72–144Hz range (144Hz is experimental), so classic OLED burn-in guidance does not directly apply. A persistent mark, bright or dark pixel, or recurring flicker should instead be investigated as a lens or environmental problem, software or streaming behavior, or a possible display-system fault.

Start with updates, a full restart, and peripheral isolation. Check whether the symptom appears in the headset dashboard, in one application, or only during PC streaming. Protect the lenses from sunlight, avoid opening the core module, and escalate persistent defects to Steam Support with photographs and the headset serial number.

What Steam Frame’s display specification means

OLED burn-in occurs when the light-emitting materials in an OLED panel age unevenly after displaying static content. Samsung and Philips describe pixel-shift, pixel-cleaning, screen-saver, and pixel-orbiting features as OLED-care measures. Those explanations are useful for understanding the term “burn-in,” but they are not Steam Frame remedies because Valve specifies LCD panels.

An LCD can still show an image that looks like retention, a dark or bright point, uneven illumination, or an intermittent image fault. On Steam Frame, treat a persistent mark as an unresolved display, optical, contamination, or software issue until support identifies the cause. Do not assume that leaving a static image on screen or running an OLED pixel-refresh routine will repair it.

Steam has not published a dead-pixel incidence rate, a burn-in rate, a flicker prevalence figure, a numeric pixel-defect tolerance, or a universal RMA threshold. Decisions are therefore made case by case through support rather than by applying a public pixel-count rule.

Identify the symptom before changing settings

Spend a minute locating the artifact. This prevents a streaming problem from being mistaken for a failed panel and gives support useful evidence.

Mark that remains in the same place

Display a light, uniform image such as a blank dashboard area, then a dark image. If the mark remains fixed relative to the lens view across the dashboard and several applications, record its position and appearance. A mark that changes with the application or disappears after a restart is more consistent with software, rendering, or streaming behavior than with a permanently damaged pixel.

Dark, bright, or colored point

A dead pixel is typically a persistent dark point. A stuck pixel can stay bright or remain fixed in one color. Check the point against white, black, red, green, and blue areas without pressing the lens or display. Note whether it is visible in both eyes, only one eye, and in the dashboard as well as games.

Flicker, flashes, or brightness pulsing

Note whether the flicker is continuous, periodic, tied to head movement, limited to a particular refresh rate, or confined to PC streaming. Also record whether it appears in the standalone dashboard after a restart. Flicker that exists in the dashboard is stronger evidence of a headset-side issue; streaming-only flicker may involve the host, SteamVR, wireless path, or refresh settings. This comparison is a reporting aid, not a published Valve diagnostic matrix.

Safe troubleshooting sequence

Perform these steps in order. Stop if the headset becomes unusually hot, smells damaged, or shows signs of physical or liquid damage, and contact support instead of continuing.

  1. Install every available update. On the headset, open Steam Settings > System > Updates and install all offered Steam Frame updates. When using PC streaming, update the Steam Client and SteamVR on the host computer as well. Restart after installation.
  2. Restart the complete setup. Restart the headset, both controllers, and the host PC or other streaming device. Test the dashboard before launching a game so you have a clean baseline.
  3. Disconnect unnecessary peripherals. Remove nonessential USB devices and disconnect unneeded Bluetooth accessories, then retest. Reconnect devices one at a time if the symptom disappears; this can expose interference or a device-specific interaction.
  4. Separate standalone play from PC streaming. Run a locally installed experience and inspect the dashboard. Then test the same type of content through PC streaming. Write down the host operating system, SteamVR version, wireless-adapter placement, and selected refresh rate whenever the issue occurs only while streaming.
  5. Check the lenses and viewing environment. Turn the headset off and inspect both lenses for dust, fingerprints, haze, or a film that moves when the lens is viewed from another angle. Use a clean, dry microfiber cloth. For occasional cleaning, put a small amount of isopropyl alcohol on the cloth rather than directly on the headset. Do not use water or household glass cleaners.
  6. Remove bright light from the test. Test indoors with the lenses pointed away from windows and lamps. Steam warns that even indoor sunlight entering the lenses can permanently damage the display system. Store the headset with the lenses turned away from windows and bright light whenever it is not in use.
  7. Repeat the observation and document it. Photograph a dead pixel or fixed mark through the lens if your camera can focus on it; capture screenshots for software artifacts when possible. Record the date, application, eye affected, refresh setting, and whether the dashboard shows the defect.
  8. Escalate rather than disassemble. If the problem survives the tests, open a Steam Frame Support ticket with the serial number, a precise symptom description, and photographs or screenshots. Steam’s support flow can handle replacement-product cases. Do not open the core module or attempt an internal repair; Steam states that damage caused by opening or modifying it is not covered by the product warranty.

How to handle an apparent burn-in or image-retention mark

Because the panels are LCD, do not present OLED pixel-care procedures as a cure. Pixel shifting, OLED “pixel cleaning,” and orbiting features described by OLED manufacturers are designed for OLED aging mechanisms and are not documented Steam Frame fixes.

Rule out contamination and optical damage

A smear, dried residue, or a scratch can look like a panel mark and may change as the viewing angle changes. Power down, use the microfiber procedure, and repeat the test on a uniform image. Never scrape the lens, press on it, or use abrasive material.

Rule out a software or streaming overlay

If the mark appears only in one game, one menu, or PC streaming, update the relevant software and capture a screenshot. Compare it with the standalone dashboard. A persistent mark in every view after a restart should be reported as a possible display fault rather than “burn-in.”

Protect against sunlight

Sunlight focused through VR lenses can permanently damage the display system, including when the headset is indoors. This is a physical-light hazard, not OLED burn-in. Keep the lenses pointed away from windows during storage and while setting the headset down.

Dead and stuck pixels: what you can and cannot do

Do not press, massage, tap, or heat the panel. Such techniques can spread damage, damage the optics, or create pressure marks, and they are not an approved Steam procedure. Do not disassemble the headset to reach the display.

Document the defect consistently

  • Record whether the point is dark, white, or a fixed color.
  • Check both eyes and note the affected side.
  • Check the Steam Frame dashboard, at least two applications, and PC streaming if available.
  • Photograph the point against a uniform background, including enough of the view to show its location.
  • Include the serial number and the date the defect was first noticed in your support request.

Official Steam material does not state how many defective pixels qualify for replacement and does not provide a self-repair process. Support must evaluate the evidence and the product’s warranty status.

Display flicker: isolate the path

Flicker in the dashboard and standalone content

Install updates, restart the headset and controllers, disconnect unnecessary peripherals, and test at a normal supported refresh setting rather than treating the experimental 144Hz mode as a baseline. If flicker remains in the dashboard after these steps, report it as a headset-side symptom with a short video if possible.

Flicker only during PC streaming

Capture the host operating system, Steam Client and SteamVR versions, refresh-rate setting, wireless-adapter placement, and the application where the issue occurs. Repeat the test after updating both the headset and host software. If standalone content is stable while streaming flickers, describe that boundary explicitly; it helps support investigate the streaming path without claiming a specific cause.

Flicker linked to a single application

Test another application and the dashboard. A game-specific artifact should be reported with the game name, graphics settings, and whether changing refresh rate affects it. Do not infer that the LCD panel is defective solely from one title.

Power, storage, and care checks that prevent misleading symptoms

Use an appropriate power source

Steam recommends a compatible 45W supply. Its guide estimates about 1.5 hours for a full recharge with that supply and about 3.5 hours through a PC or adapter. Those are charging estimates, not guarantees of runtime or a fix for flicker. If charging is unusually slow, retest with a known-compatible 45W supply before treating low charge as a display failure.

Choose the right microSD card

Steam Frame supports UHS-I microSD cards rated class 3 or better. A card specification concerns storage performance; it does not repair a dead pixel or an LCD artifact. Remove a newly installed card only as an isolation step if the symptom began after a storage change, and report the result.

Respect temperature limits

Store the headset between −20°C and +40°C and operate it in ambient temperatures from 0°C to +35°C, according to Steam Support. Let a device outside those ranges return to a safe temperature before testing. Avoid leaving it in a sunny car or beside a heater, where both heat and concentrated light can create damage that looks like a display fault.

When to request an RMA or replacement

Request support when a defect persists in the dashboard and multiple applications after updates, restarts, peripheral isolation, and lens inspection; when a dead or stuck pixel is consistently visible; or when flicker continues in standalone use. Include the serial number, purchase or order information requested by the support form, a concise timeline, and clear photos or video.

Describe observations rather than conclusions: “a green point remains at the upper-left of the right-eye view in the dashboard and two games” is more useful than “OLED burn-in.” State whether the headset was exposed to direct or window sunlight, whether the issue is streaming-only, and which refresh setting was active. Steam has not published a universal RMA threshold, so support—not an online pixel-count chart—determines the next step.

What not to do

  • Do not call the panel OLED or apply OLED pixel-cleaning instructions as though they were Steam Frame procedures.
  • Do not press, massage, heat, or scratch a suspected defective pixel.
  • Do not use water, household cleaners, or abrasive cloths on the lenses.
  • Do not aim the lenses at a window, even indoors, during storage or testing.
  • Do not open the core module or install internal modifications; resulting damage is excluded from the product warranty.
  • Do not buy an accessory as a “cure” for a panel defect. A 45W USB-C supply, UHS-I microSD card, or microfiber cloth can meet power, storage, or care needs, but none repairs LCD damage.

Support-ticket checklist

  • Steam Frame serial number.
  • Exact symptom: fixed mark, dark point, colored point, flashes, or brightness pulsing.
  • Affected eye and approximate location in the view.
  • Whether it appears in the dashboard, standalone applications, PC streaming, or only one game.
  • Steam Frame, Steam Client, and SteamVR versions after updating.
  • Refresh-rate setting, including whether experimental 144Hz was selected.
  • Host operating system and wireless-adapter placement for streaming reports.
  • Steps already tried: restart, peripheral removal, lens cleaning, and standalone-versus-streaming comparison.
  • Photographs or screenshots, plus a short video for intermittent flicker when possible.

The practical verdict is straightforward: Steam Frame’s LCD specification rules out OLED burn-in as the default explanation. Clean and protect the optics, update and restart the system, isolate streaming and peripherals, and document any defect that remains. Persistent dead pixels, flicker, or image marks belong with Steam Support, not an improvised internal repair.
