Steam Frame controllers now default to gamepad input in VR games that do not support VR inputs. To use the feature, the Frame and PC need to be on three beta channels: SteamOS beta on the Frame, plus the Steam client beta and SteamVR beta on the PC. Valve announced the change in its SteamVR 2.18.3 beta notes.
What the Steam Frame controller update changes
In VR games without VR-input support, Steam Frame controllers now use gamepad input by default. This gives a game that expects conventional gamepad controls an input mode it may recognize, rather than requiring the game to support dedicated VR controller inputs.
This is a software compatibility feature, not a promise that every game will work perfectly. Valve asks users to report titles that do not work out of the box.
The three beta channels you need
The feature requires beta software on both the Frame and the PC running SteamVR:
#1 Best Overall
- DOTTED PATTERN GRIP – Non-slip texture placed exactly where hands grip resists sweat during 50+ minute VR sessions, purpose-molded for Steam Frame controllers.
- SIZE-ADJUSTABLE SECURITY STRAP – Adjusts to any hand size and locks the controller to your wrist, eliminating drop risk during fast, dynamic VR movement.
- PADDED FOAM COMFORT STRAP – Interior foam cushioning plus an ergonomic silicone cover cut hand and wrist fatigue across extended play sessions
- FULL SILICONE PROTECTION – Complete controller coverage shields against scratches, drops, sweat, and daily wear without adding bulk or blocking sensors.
- CHECK FOR COMPATIBILITY – Designed for Valve Steam Frame VR Headset Controllers (2026)
- SteamOS beta on Steam Frame: The headset must be enrolled in the SteamOS beta channel.
- Steam client beta on PC: The computer running Steam must use the Steam client beta channel.
- SteamVR beta on PC: SteamVR on that computer must also be enrolled in its beta channel.
Valve’s Steam client beta notes clarify that Steam and SteamVR beta participation is required on the PC; the Frame also needs SteamOS beta. Because these are beta-channel requirements, they may change in later software releases.
How to change the controller mode for a game
Valve provides two per-game places to select the preferred mode:
Rank #2
- Custom Fit for Steam Frame Controllers: Specially molded grip cover perfectly matches for Steam Frame VR controllers. Precise cutouts reserve tracking signal channels without blocking sensor signals, delivering stable tracking performance while shielding handles from scratches, bumps and abrasion.
- Premium Anti-Slip & Sweat-Resistant Silicone: Constructed from high-quality soft silicone with textured surface. Boost friction significantly when palms sweat, prevent slipping during intense VR motion, and offer breathable, skin-friendly touch for long-hour gaming.
- Built-in Anti-Drop Adjustable Knuckle Strap: Comes with auxiliary knuckle strap to secure controllers firmly in your palm. Avoid accidental throwing away controllers even when you loosen your grip, great for fast-paced, action VR games.
- Upgraded Gaming Comfort & Control: Adds extra grip layer to the smooth original plastic controller. Optimizes holding posture, effectively reduces hand strain and fatigue during extended play, helping you achieve more precise in-game operations.
- Easy to Install & Remove: Flexible silicone material enables quick installation and detachment. The protective cover stays tightly fitted without loosening; washable for repeated use to keep your VR accessories clean.
- Open that game’s Steam Input settings.
- Open VR Controller settings on the game’s Now Playing page.
The preferred mode can be set separately for each VR game, so you can change an individual title without changing the default for every game.

What to expect from compatibility
Gamepad input is intended for VR games that lack VR-input support. The update does not establish a compatibility list or guarantee that every such title will behave correctly. If a game does not work out of the box, Valve asks users to report it.
