Steam Frame is not an immediate, walk-in purchase. Valve’s September reservation window has closed, and new signups now join the end of a regional waitlist. Before joining, decide whether a streaming-first Steam VR headset fits how you play, choose between the 256GB and 1TB kits, and check the order window shown on your logged-in Steam product page.

This guide explains the queue, regional ordering routes, prices, specifications, network implications, standalone software, accessories, and the practical trade-offs that determine whether reserving Steam Frame makes sense.

What Steam Frame is—and what you are actually reserving

Steam Frame is Valve’s wireless VR headset and controller kit for Steam VR and non-VR play. Valve positions it as streaming-first: it is designed to receive PC-rendered VR content over a wireless connection while also supporting standalone VR and non-VR titles. That distinction matters more than a single display specification. A buyer who expects to use a powerful gaming PC and a well-placed wireless network has a different priority from someone who wants to install games directly on the headset.

A reservation or waitlist signup does not create an immediate shipment. Valve randomized the original reservation order after signups closed, then began fulfillment on September 18, 2026. In Valve’s October 9 update, reservation holders saw an expected purchase-email window of either December or 2027 on the product page while signed in to Steam. The estimate attached to your account is the useful one; a general announcement cannot predict an individual queue position.

Valve labels some specifications as subject to change before availability. Treat the listed figures as manufacturer specifications rather than independent test results, and recheck the live product page for price, eligibility, stock, and timing before committing.

Check your reservation or join the waitlist

If you reserved during the original window

Sign in to Steam and open the Steam Frame product page or your Steam account hardware area. Valve displays the expected window for your purchase email there. Keep the email address on the account current and monitor both the inbox and the account page; a reservation is not a shipping confirmation.

If you did not sign up before the deadline

The original signup period opened September 14, 2026 and closed September 17. Valve’s current policy places anyone joining afterward at the end of the waitlist, in the order they join. Queues are separated by region, and Valve says it draws from a region’s waitlist only after that region’s reservation queue is exhausted.

1. Sign in to the Steam account that will own the headset.
2. Open the live Steam Frame product page and confirm that your country or region is eligible.
3. Select the 256GB or 1TB configuration. The model choice was locked after the original randomization; canceling a reservation or leaving the waitlist releases that position.
4. Review the displayed queue or order estimate before confirming the waitlist request.
5. After joining, use the account page—not assumptions about the announcement date—to track the status.

When the purchase email arrives

Valve gives each recipient 72 hours to complete the purchase. If the order is not completed in that period, Valve moves to the next person in the queue. Check the account page and email regularly, and make sure payment and shipping details are ready before your window opens.

Where Valve ships and how regional ordering works

Valve’s launch announcement identifies direct Steam shipping to the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, the European Union, and Australia. For Japan, Taiwan, and Hong Kong, Valve names KOMODO as the authorized distributor. The announcement said South Korea would ship at a later date. Eligibility, distributor arrangements, and queue timing can change, so use the live Steam Frame page or the named regional distributor for the current answer.

Regional queues and prices are not interchangeable. Joining from one region does not transfer you to another region’s queue, and a reservation tied to one model cannot be changed after the stated randomization. Confirm the delivery country, currency, model, and expected purchase window before you submit a new waitlist request.

Choose 256GB or 1TB

The 1TB kit costs US$240 more than the 256GB kit at Valve’s listed US prices. Both models have a microSD card slot, so the decision is not simply “enough storage or no storage”; it is whether the additional internal capacity is worth the premium and the convenience for your library.

Choose 256GB when streaming is your normal play mode

PC streaming keeps the headset’s internal storage from being the limiting factor for a large PC library. The 256GB model is the more economical starting point if you expect to install only a handful of standalone games, use the headset mainly for streamed Steam VR, and are comfortable managing local storage with a microSD card.

Choose 1TB when standalone use is central

The 1TB model is easier to live with when you want a broad on-device library, large non-VR installations, or fewer storage-management decisions. The product materials do not establish game-by-game installation sizes or independent loading benchmarks, so base this choice on your own library plans rather than a promised number of simultaneous titles.

Do not treat the microSD slot as a reason to ignore internal storage

Expansion adds flexibility, but it does not make the two models identical. Internal UFS capacity and removable-card capacity are separate choices, and Valve does not publish a performance comparison between internal and card storage in the cited product materials. If you want the least juggling, select the internal capacity that matches your likely local library.

These are the headset-kit prices, not a guarantee that every accessory, delivery charge, tax treatment, or distributor price will be identical in every region.

Specifications that affect the buying decision

All figures in this table are vendor-published specifications. Valve says some specifications may change before availability, and the cited materials contain no independent battery-life test, comparative benchmark, or measured network performance.

Streaming-first use: plan the network, not just the headset

Steam Frame’s wireless PC experience depends on the path between the computer, the included adapter, the headset, and the physical layout of your home. Valve lists Wi-Fi 7 in the headset, dual radios for simultaneous 5GHz Wi-Fi and 6GHz VR streaming, and a supplied Wi-Fi 6E adapter for a direct low-latency PC link. Those capabilities describe the hardware; they do not establish how well streaming will perform through walls, across a congested apartment, or on a particular router.

Before ordering, identify where the PC and play area will sit. Keep the wireless equipment close to the headset’s intended play space, reduce obstructions where practical, and avoid assuming that an internet upgrade will fix a local wireless bottleneck. PC streaming is a local-network task even when the game itself uses online services. The product information does not specify a universal internet speed or router requirement, so do not treat an unlisted number as an official minimum.

Questions to answer before you reserve

• Will the gaming PC be near the play area, or will the signal cross several rooms?
• Can you dedicate a clear location for the included wireless adapter?
• Is your current network already busy with high-bandwidth traffic during the hours you play?
• Would you still use the headset if PC streaming were unavailable, or is standalone support only a backup?

Standalone games and included software

Valve’s launch announcement said more than 100 games were Steam Frame Standalone Verified at launch. That is a dated, manufacturer-reported count, not a permanent catalog size or a promise that a particular title is supported today. Check Valve’s current standalone verified list for every game you intend to install, and check it again if your purchase window is far in the future.

Valve also says Half-Life: Alyx can be redeemed from Settings after you log in to Steam Frame. Each device can redeem one copy; an account that already owns the title cannot redeem another copy. The redemption is therefore an included-device benefit, not a transferable second license for an existing owner.

Fit, vision, tracking, and passthrough considerations

IPD and glasses

The target interpupillary-distance range is 60–70mm, and Valve lists a maximum glasses width of 140mm. These are fit boundaries, not a promise of identical optical clarity for every wearer. Measure your IPD if you do not know it, and measure the width of your frames before assuming they will fit. Prescription inserts are available from Zenni as a named accessory, but confirm current compatibility, prescription limits, stock, and regional availability before purchasing.

Passthrough and cameras

The base headset uses four outward-facing monochrome tracking cameras, so its passthrough view is monochrome. Valve lists an optional Arcturus Vision Camera for 5K HDR color passthrough and spatial-video capture. That camera is an accessory choice, not a specification of the base headset. Confirm its current stock and fit before adding it to your plan.

Weight and battery expectations

The listed 440g includes the core module and headstrap; the core module alone is listed at 185g. The battery is specified as 21.6Wh, but no independent runtime result is provided in the product materials. Do not convert the watt-hour figure into a promised number of play hours. Actual endurance depends on software, refresh mode, wireless activity, brightness, and other variables that Valve has not quantified here.

Valve describes products carrying the Steam Frame Compatible mark as tested to work with the headset. The three first-party kits in the table are described as add-to-cart options during the Steam Frame checkout flow, not as guaranteed standalone marketplace purchases. Choosing 1TB solely because it sounds future-proof

The 1TB model is useful for a large local library, but the cited materials do not provide installation-size forecasts or performance tests. If most games will be streamed from a PC, the 256GB model plus removable expansion may be the more rational allocation of money.

Expecting color passthrough from the base headset

The base outward-facing cameras provide monochrome passthrough. Color passthrough and spatial-video capture require the separately listed Arcturus Vision Camera, subject to availability.

Converting battery capacity into runtime

21.6Wh is a capacity specification, not a measured play-time claim. Look for Valve’s current runtime information if it is added before your purchase window; do not infer a guaranteed duration from watt-hours alone.

Waiting until after the email arrives to solve fit or payment issues

The purchase window lasts 72 hours. Resolve account access, payment, shipping, IPD, glasses, and network questions while you are waiting rather than during that short checkout period.
