These routes provide ways to stream games, but the published information does not establish that any is a performance-equivalent replacement for Steam Frame.

This is a guide to documented compatibility and features, not a tested performance ranking.
Use Steam Link VR with a supported headset
Steam Link VR streams from a PC running Steam and SteamVR to a compatible headset. Valve lists Meta Quest 2, Quest 3, and Quest Pro on its Steam Remote Play page. Valve’s headset support FAQ also names PICO 4 Ultra, PICO 4, PICO Neo 3, HTC Vive Focus Vision, and HTC Vive XR Elite. Check the current FAQ for your precise model; support for these consumer devices should not be assumed to cover every headset from the same brands or business models.
Valve’s September 25, 2025 announcement said Steam Link VR was available on the named PICO and HTC models with basic streaming functionality. The current support FAQ is the better place to verify whether a model remains listed.

Meet the published network requirements
Valve’s Remote Play guidance and headset FAQ call for a 5GHz Wi-Fi 5 network for the listed VR setup and recommend connecting the PC to the router with Ethernet. These are setup requirements and guidance, not guarantees about latency, image quality, or reliability. A compatible headset and a suitable network are both needed; wireless streaming does not remove the PC and SteamVR host requirements.
Stream to a TV, phone, tablet, or computer with Steam Link
If you do not need VR, Steam Link may be enough to play a Steam library from another room or on a TV. Valve lists clients across phones, tablets, televisions, computers, and Raspberry Pi devices. The client receives the game stream and sends your input back to the host PC. Check Valve’s Steam Remote Play page for destination support, and its Steam Link Hardware guidance for TV streaming and network information.

This route is for streaming games to a screen, not a substitute for a VR headset. Whether it suits a particular game also depends on the destination device and how you plan to provide input.
Consider Sunshine and Moonlight for broader device streaming
Moonlight is an open-source game-streaming client project with clients for desktop, mobile, television, and other platforms. Its FAQ identifies Sunshine as a host option. Together, they offer another way to stream from a PC to compatible devices, particularly if you want an option beyond Steam Link.

The cited Moonlight information does not establish Steam Frame-like VR feature parity or a comparative latency result. Before choosing it, check that the host and client platforms you plan to use are supported and that you are comfortable configuring both sides.
Treat GameStream as a legacy-specific option
NVIDIA’s GameStream User Guide describes streaming from a GeForce GTX or RTX PC to a SHIELD TV or SHIELD Tablet, and advertises capability up to 4K HDR at 60 FPS. Those are NVIDIA’s published capability statements, not independent test results. Moonlight’s project information says NVIDIA’s GeForce Experience and SHIELD streaming feature are being discontinued, so check NVIDIA’s current guidance before planning a new setup around GameStream.

What Steam Frame offers beyond streaming software
Valve describes Steam Frame as a streaming-first wireless VR headset that can also run standalone games using SteamOS. Its product page lists 2160×2160 LCD panels per eye, supported refresh rates of 72–144Hz, Wi-Fi 7, and an included Wi-Fi 6E adapter for a direct PC link. These are Valve’s stated specifications and product positioning, not independent measurements.
That makes Steam Frame more than a streaming app or client: its dedicated adapter, dual radios, and standalone play are part of the product description. Existing Steam Link, Moonlight, or SHIELD setups can provide useful streaming paths, but the available official information does not show that they reproduce those hardware features or establish a performance winner between them.

How to make the decision
- Already own a supported VR headset? Check Valve’s current headset FAQ and begin with Steam Link VR if your model is listed.
- Only want to play on a conventional screen? Check Steam Link support for your TV, phone, tablet, or computer before considering a headset.
- Want another PC-to-device software route? Confirm Sunshine host and Moonlight client compatibility for your devices.
- Have an NVIDIA SHIELD? Review NVIDIA’s current GameStream guidance and the discontinued-feature context before relying on it for a new setup.
- Choosing based on image quality or latency? The official sources cited here do not provide comparable independent tests, so they cannot support a reliable ranking on those measures.
