If Steam opens and immediately closes after a 64-bit system or client update, check the operating system’s glibc version and 32-bit graphics support before reinstalling Steam. A 64-bit kernel by itself is not sufficient: Steam needs compatible 64-bit and 32-bit glibc, OpenGL/Vulkan libraries, and graphics drivers. The fastest reliable path is to verify the support baseline, run a 32-bit OpenGL test, repair the graphics stack, reboot, and then refresh the official Steam launcher.
First, identify which part is failing
There are two different failures that are often described as “Steam will not launch.” The fix depends on which one you have.

Do not begin by changing Proton if the Steam client itself cannot stay open. Proton is used to run many Windows games; it does not repair a broken Steam desktop client.

Steam for Linux is a 64-bit application, but it still starts 32-bit components and launches software that expects 32-bit graphics libraries. Your kernel can report x86_64 or AMD64 while the user-space libraries Steam needs are missing, too old, or installed for only one architecture.

Valve’s current Linux requirements call for the latest Ubuntu release or an Ubuntu LTS release with a 64-bit x86_64/AMD64 kernel. They also require current 64-bit and 32-bit graphics drivers and both 64-bit and 32-bit glibc. Valve states that glibc 2.31 or newer is required from 15 August 2025. A distribution with an older glibc is outside the supported baseline; reinstalling the Steam client on that system is not a substitute for upgrading the operating system.
This cutoff affects the distribution, not merely the Steam package. A machine can be fully 64-bit and still fail because its glibc, OpenGL loader, Mesa stack, or proprietary-driver 32-bit components do not meet the requirement.
Check the support baseline before changing Steam
Check the glibc version
On Debian-derived systems such as Ubuntu, run:
ldd --versionThe first line reports the installed glibc version. If it is below 2.31, use the distribution’s supported release-upgrade procedure. Do not try to replace glibc manually with files downloaded from an unrelated source: glibc is a core system component, and an unsupported replacement can make the entire desktop unbootable.
If the command reports 2.31 or newer, glibc meets Valve’s stated minimum. That does not prove that Steam will launch; it only removes one system-level incompatibility from the list.
Confirm that the distribution is still supported
- Use a current Ubuntu release or a supported Ubuntu LTS release.
- Use a 64-bit x86_64/AMD64 installation rather than a 32-bit operating system.
- Keep the kernel, graphics stack, and firmware updated through the distribution’s normal update mechanism.
- Install both amd64 and i386 user-space graphics support when the distribution provides separate packages.
An end-of-life distribution can have a new-looking Steam shortcut while retaining obsolete libraries. In that case, an operating-system upgrade is the durable repair.
Repair 64-bit and 32-bit graphics support
Steam Support identifies missing or incorrectly installed OpenGL drivers as a major cause of Linux startup failures. The useful test is not whether a 64-bit desktop renders; it is whether a 32-bit OpenGL program can start successfully.

Run the 32-bit OpenGL test on Ubuntu
- Refresh package metadata:
sudo apt update- Install the 32-bit OpenGL test utility:
sudo apt install mesa-utils:i386- Run the renderer check with verbose loader diagnostics:
LIBGL_DEBUG=verbose glxinfo -BA successful result should start a 32-bit OpenGL program and report a renderer rather than failing to load a library or display. The verbose output can show which loader and driver files are being selected. If this test fails, Steam is not ready: repair the graphics installation first.
The exact driver package varies by GPU vendor and distribution. Do not install a random driver archive over the distribution’s stack. Keep the 64-bit and 32-bit parts from the same supported driver family so that they use compatible versions.
NVIDIA systems
Install the proprietary driver recommended by your distribution and verify that its 32-bit components are installed as well as its 64-bit components. A working 64-bit desktop does not establish that the i386 OpenGL libraries exist. Re-run the 32-bit glxinfo -B test after correcting the package set.
AMD and Intel systems
Use the distribution’s current Mesa and Vulkan packages. Update the complete graphics stack rather than copying a single shared library into /usr/lib. Then repeat the OpenGL test. If Mesa updates were held back because the distribution release is obsolete, upgrade the distribution through its supported process.
Make sure i386 packages can be installed
On a Debian-derived 64-bit installation, the package manager must have the i386 architecture available before it can install packages such as mesa-utils:i386. If apt says that the architecture or package cannot be found, enable i386 using your distribution’s documented multi-architecture procedure, refresh apt metadata, and install the matching 32-bit graphics packages. Keep amd64 enabled; Steam needs both architectures.
Restart after graphics or package changes
Reboot after updating the graphics driver, Mesa, kernel, or Steam-related packages. Ubuntu documentation specifically recommends restarting after updates of this kind. A running desktop session can retain old libraries or an old graphics server, so testing immediately after an update can produce the same failure even though the packages are now correct.

After the reboot, run LIBGL_DEBUG=verbose glxinfo -B again. If the 32-bit check still fails, return to the driver and architecture repair rather than reinstalling Steam repeatedly.
Refresh the official Steam launcher
Once the operating system and OpenGL test are healthy, refresh Steam itself. Valve publishes an official steam_latest.deb package and an apt repository. Use one official installation path and let its bootstrapper download the current client files.
- Close every Steam process you can see, including a tray icon.
- Ensure the amd64 and i386 architectures are enabled in apt.
- Install or reinstall the current official Debian package, or use Valve’s apt repository according to its instructions.
- Allow the bootstrapper to download the client components it needs.
- Reboot or log out and back in if the package installation changed graphics or desktop integration components.
- Launch Steam from the desktop menu and wait for the first update to finish.
Avoid mixing several packaging formats while diagnosing one failure. Installing a distribution package, a separate downloaded package, and another sandboxed copy can leave multiple library and runtime locations. If more than one copy is already installed, choose the official path you intend to keep and remove or disable the others only through the package method that installed them.
Refresh Steam Runtime when the client or runtime is stuck
Steam Runtime supplies a controlled user-space environment for games and some client components. It is a software layer, not a replacement for your system’s glibc or graphics driver. Runtime repair is useful after the client can open but a runtime download is stuck, or when a runtime update itself has become inconsistent.
- Start Steam and allow it to download the updated game or runtime files.
- When the download completes, choose Steam’s normal exit command; do not merely close a window while background processes remain.
- Start Steam again so it rebuilds or reloads the updated runtime.
- If the problem remains, record the runtime version information requested by Valve’s bug-reporting guidance before reporting the issue.
Valve’s Linux Runtime documentation identifies Steam Linux Runtime 2.0, also called “soldier,” with app ID 1391110. That runtime is used by official Proton versions 5.13 through 7.0. The identifier is useful when checking which runtime Steam has downloaded; it is not a command that fixes a missing graphics driver.
When Steam opens but games do not
Treat this as a separate troubleshooting branch. A functioning client proves that the desktop launcher can start, but each game can still depend on different native libraries, runtime files, graphics APIs, or compatibility settings.

Update Linux and graphics drivers
Install the current updates offered by the distribution, including Mesa or the supported proprietary driver. Reboot after a graphics-stack update before testing the game again.

Verify the game’s files
For a title that remains at “Preparing to Launch,” use Steam’s installed-file verification command for that game. Steam compares the local installation with the server copy and downloads damaged or missing files. This addresses game content; it does not repair an unsupported operating system or missing i386 OpenGL libraries.
Select an appropriate Proton version
Proton is Valve-developed compatibility software that allows many Windows games to run on Linux through Steam Play. If a Windows game stopped launching after an update, open that game’s properties, find the compatibility settings, and select a supported Proton release. If the normal supported version shows a title-specific regression, try Proton Experimental for that title. Change the setting one game at a time so you can identify which choice changes the result.
Changing Proton is reversible and has a narrower scope than upgrading the operating system. It should therefore be tried after the client launches and after system and graphics updates are complete.
Review per-game launch options
Ubuntu’s troubleshooting guidance documents per-game launch options and notes that Proton Experimental can help with some native-game launch failures. Remove temporary options that were copied from an old guide, then test with the game’s default settings before adding one option at a time. A launch option that works for one title can prevent another from starting.

Common symptoms and the next action
Steam flashes briefly and closes
Check ldd --version, then run the 32-bit OpenGL test. A glibc version below 2.31 requires an operating-system upgrade. A failed 32-bit OpenGL test requires graphics-driver or multi-architecture repair.

Steam says it is updating forever
Close Steam completely, reboot after any package or driver update, and refresh the official launcher. If the runtime download itself is stuck, let it finish when possible, exit Steam completely, and start it again.
The desktop works, but Steam reports a graphics error
The desktop may be using only 64-bit libraries. Install and test the i386 OpenGL path, then confirm that both architectures use the same supported driver family.
Only a Windows game stopped launching
Leave the client installation alone initially. Update Linux and the graphics stack, verify the game’s files, and test a supported Proton version. Use Proton Experimental only as a title-specific troubleshooting choice.

Proton settings are per game. Keep the working selection on the affected title and return other games to their previous supported setting instead of changing the global default.
A clean order of operations
- Determine whether the client or only a game fails.
- Run
ldd --version; upgrade the distribution if glibc is below 2.31. - Confirm a current supported Ubuntu release or equivalent supported distribution and a 64-bit x86_64/AMD64 installation.
- Ensure amd64 and i386 graphics support are available.
- Install
mesa-utils:i386where applicable and runLIBGL_DEBUG=verbose glxinfo -B. - Repair the supported NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel graphics stack until the 32-bit test works.
- Restart the computer.
- Refresh Steam through Valve’s official
steam_latest.debor apt path, without mixing package formats. - If the client opens but a runtime is stuck, allow the runtime update, exit Steam completely, and relaunch.
- For game-only failures, verify files and change Proton or per-game launch options for that title.
This sequence separates irreversible system work from easy per-game changes. It also prevents a Proton tweak or game-file verification from masking a missing 32-bit graphics library.
