Simcoe County Museum’s Fall Steam Up gave visitors a rare, working view of construction technology that disappeared from ordinary job sites generations ago. An Erie steam shovel operated in the gravel pit behind the Midhurst museum, alongside antique tractors, classic trucks, steam rollers and other road-building equipment. The machines were presented through a collaboration between the museum and the Historical Construction Equipment Association.
What visitors saw at the Fall Steam Up
The event combined live demonstrations with static displays. The centerpiece was an Erie steam shovel working in the museum’s gravel pit, where visitors could watch it dig rather than simply view a preserved machine behind a barrier. The program took place on the Saturday described in an October 17, 2026 report, before the equipment was put away for winter.
Other displays broadened the picture of early road and construction work. Antique tractors, classic trucks, steam rollers and road-building equipment showed how jobs were organized before diesel-powered fleets became standard. Some machines were demonstrated; others remained on static display so visitors could examine their construction at close range.
How an Erie steam shovel works
Boiler and wood fuel
Unlike a battery-electric or diesel machine, the shovel begins with a boiler. Burning wood heats water and produces steam pressure. That pressure supplies the engine’s power, while the boiler, firebox and associated controls must be managed as part of every operating session.

Cables and pulleys instead of hydraulics
Charlie Huson of Tiny Township described the machine as “a boiler and wood fired, true steam power, all cables and pulleys, as opposed to hydraulics now.” The shovel’s digging and positioning movements are therefore visible mechanical operations: drums, cables and pulleys transmit the engine’s force to the boom, dipper and other working parts. A modern excavator generally sends pressurized fluid through hydraulic pumps, valves and cylinders instead. The report does not identify a particular modern excavator or provide specifications for a one-to-one performance comparison.
Why the motion is so compelling
Huson said, “You can see it when he’s digging, how well it works and the simplicity.” That visibility is a major part of the experience. A cable tightening, a pulley turning and a boom moving make the power path understandable without specialized instruments. Visitors can observe the sequence from fuel and boiler pressure to mechanical motion in a way that is largely hidden inside contemporary equipment.

Steam construction equipment versus later machinery
| Aspect | Steam construction equipment | Modern hydraulic equipment |
|---|---|---|
| Energy source | Fuel is burned in a boiler to create steam pressure; the demonstrated shovel was wood-fired. | Typically uses an engine to drive hydraulic pumps; the event report gives no specifications for a particular machine. |
| Power transmission | Mechanical cables, drums and pulleys transfer motion to the working equipment. | Pressurized hydraulic fluid moves cylinders and motors. |
| Operating period | Steam construction machines remained in use into the 1930s and early 1940s, according to Reg Johnston of the Historical Construction Equipment Association. | Hydraulic systems dominate current construction equipment, but no specific model or adoption date is identified in the report. |
| Maintenance and preservation | Requires care of the boiler, firebox and mechanical drive system, as well as specialist restoration knowledge for equipment no longer manufactured. | Uses modern engines, pumps, valves and electronic or mechanical controls; maintenance requirements vary by machine and are not detailed in the event report. |
| Visitor experience | Fuel, heat, moving cables and exposed mechanisms are directly observable during a demonstration. | Power delivery is generally more enclosed and controlled, making the operation less visually legible to a casual observer. |
When did diesel replace steam?
There is no single changeover year that applies to every construction machine or region. Johnston told the report that steam equipment continued into the 1930s and early 1940s, until diesel and gasoline engines displaced it. Huson recalled that diesel machines were already out by 1916 and connected steam shovels with major canal and lock-building projects of the late 1800s and early 1900s, while acknowledging that he was estimating. Those statements are best read as informed local recollections rather than a universal engineering timetable: different manufacturers, jobs and markets adopted newer engines at different speeds.

Why steam machines still attract an audience
They are no longer being built
When asked what makes steam engines unique today, Johnston answered, “There aren’t any,” referring to new machines being manufactured. Surviving examples are therefore historical artifacts as well as functioning equipment. Each operating demonstration depends on preservation, restoration and operators who understand systems that disappeared from mainstream production long ago.
The mechanics are visible
Steam equipment exposes a chain of cause and effect that modern machinery often conceals. A wood fire, boiler pressure, engine, cable drum and pulley can be followed with the eye. That makes the machines useful teaching tools for visitors interested in engineering, industrial history or the evolution of construction methods.

Nostalgia and working history
Johnston summarized the emotional appeal plainly: “It’s nostalgia, really. They’re just neat to have.” The attraction is not only sentiment. Watching the Erie shovel perform the task it was designed for connects a preserved object with the canal, lock, quarry and road projects that shaped earlier communities.
What the event says about preserving heavy equipment
A static exhibit can show scale, materials and craftsmanship, but a live steam-up adds sound, heat, movement and operating risk that photographs cannot convey. Demonstrating a machine also reveals the labor behind preservation: boilers must be prepared, mechanical components maintained and operation managed carefully. The Fall Steam Up’s combination of active demonstrations and static displays let visitors see both the working principles and the broader family of equipment used on historic construction sites.
