If a game won’t run on your Steam Deck, first check its Deck Compatibility rating and the requirements it does not meet. Then update SteamOS, restart, and temporarily close third-party apps installed through Desktop Mode. If the game begins launching and then closes, verify its files and check its system requirements. These steps help narrow down the cause, but no single fix works for every game.

First, identify what “won’t run” means

The next step depends on what happens when you start the game. Note the game’s name and exact error message, then match the symptom:

  • It never opens: Check its Deck Compatibility rating and Store-page requirements first.
  • It shows “Preparing to Launch” and then closes: Verify the game files, check for interfering software, and compare the game’s system requirements with the Deck.
  • It opens but runs poorly or becomes unstable: Install available system updates, restart, and test with third-party Desktop Mode apps closed.
  • Steam says “Game is not available on your current platform”: Check which operating systems the game supports; this message indicates an operating-system compatibility restriction.

Steam notes that games can fail to launch for different reasons across different configurations, so treat each step as a diagnostic test rather than a guaranteed fix.

Check the game’s Steam Deck Compatibility rating

Open the game’s Steam Store page and find the Steam Deck Compatibility section. Steam assigns one of four ratings:

#1 Best Overall
Valve Steam Deck OLED 1TB Handheld Gaming Console
  • 1TB NVMe SSD
  • 1280 x 800 HDR OLED display with premium anti-glare etched glass, 7.4" Diagonal display size up to 90Hz refresh rate
  • Wi-Fi 6E
  • 50Whr battery; 3-12 hours of gameplay (content-dependent)
  • Carrying case with removable liner
  • Verified: The game works well on Deck by default.
  • Playable: The game works, but may need manual configuration.
  • Unsupported: Steam does not currently consider the game playable on Deck.
  • Unknown: Steam has not tested the game. This is not evidence that it will or will not work.

For a Playable or Unsupported game, read the Store page’s compatibility details to see which requirements are not met. The rating is a useful clue, not a guarantee that every game update or configuration will behave the same way. See Steam’s Steam Deck software and troubleshooting guide.

Install updates, restart, and close third-party apps

Steam’s first software checks for Deck instability are to install available updates, restart the device, and exit or disable third-party applications installed through Desktop Mode.

  1. Open Steam > Settings > System > Software Updates and install any available updates.
  2. Open the Power menu and restart the Deck.
  3. If you use third-party apps installed through Desktop Mode, exit or disable them temporarily.
  4. Try launching the game again before changing other settings.

Testing one change at a time makes it easier to tell what affected the result. Steam’s basic-use and troubleshooting guide also recommends updates, a restart, and checking third-party apps.

Try a different Proton version for a Steam game

Proton lets Steam run many Windows games on SteamOS. If a Steam game will not start, you can test whether a different compatibility-tool setting changes the result. This is a troubleshooting option, not a way to guarantee that an Unsupported game will work.

  1. Highlight the game in your Steam Library.
  2. Open Properties > Compatibility.
  3. Enable the option to force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool.
  4. Choose the latest Proton version available and try launching the game.

Before changing the setting, note what it was originally so you can restore it if needed. Steam warns that forcing Proton may cause Steam to download the Windows version if only the Linux version of the game is installed. The option applies to Steam games; a non-Steam app may need separate troubleshooting. Steam describes the setting in its Deck software guide.

If the game closes after “Preparing to Launch”

When the game starts to launch but then exits, Steam recommends checking the installation, possible software interference, and system requirements.

Rank #3
  • Verify the game’s files using Steam’s file-integrity option for the title.
  • Disable non-essential software that might interfere with Steam, then test again.
  • Check the game’s system requirements and compare them with the device. Steam cautions that systems at or near a game’s requirements may experience issues.

Steam’s article “Games do not run after ‘Preparing to Launch’” explains these checks and notes that causes vary.

Understand a platform-availability error

If Steam displays “Game is not available on your current platform,” Steam defines this as the game not supporting the operating system currently in use. Check the game’s supported operating systems and system requirements; changing a launch setting may not remove that restriction. Steam explains the message in its platform-availability support article.

If you purchased the game directly through Steam and decide it will not work for your needs, you can submit a refund request through Steam’s help site. A request is not a guarantee of eligibility or approval.

What to record before contacting support

If the problem remains, collect details that help distinguish a compatibility issue from a launch failure:

  • The game title and exact error or behavior.
  • The game’s Deck Compatibility rating and any unmet requirements shown on its Store page.
  • Your SteamOS and Proton versions, if relevant.
  • Whether the game is using a Linux build or running through Proton, if known.
  • The troubleshooting steps you tried and whether anything changed.

Steam’s Deck guide directs users with unresolved issues to SteamOS or Steam Deck discussions, or to Steam Support. For a non-Steam app, the app’s own support team may be the right contact.
