Choose a Steam Deck if most of your library is on Steam and you want SteamOS with Valve’s Deck Verified guidance. Choose a Windows handheld if you rely on Xbox Game Pass, Epic Games Store, GOG, or several PC launchers. The important difference is not raw performance alone: it is whether each game and launcher in your existing library is supported with an acceptable amount of setup. Compatibility is title-specific on both platforms, so check the individual game before buying or installing.
What the operating system changes
A handheld PC is still a PC, but its operating system determines how naturally a game launcher, controller interface, updates and account system fit together. The Steam Deck uses SteamOS. Windows handhelds such as ASUS’s ROG Xbox Ally and ROG Ally X use Windows and are designed to open the same storefronts and subscription apps you would use on a Windows desktop.
SteamOS, Steam and Proton
SteamOS is built around the Steam library and a console-style interface. Valve describes Proton as the compatibility technology that allows Windows games to run on SteamOS; it is not a guarantee that every Windows title will work. A game can fail because of its launcher, copy-protection system, anti-cheat implementation, video codec, required service or another title-specific dependency.

Ratings can change as a game or Proton version changes.

Windows and the wider PC ecosystem
Windows provides the native environment expected by most PC launchers. ASUS explicitly lists Steam, Xbox Game Pass, Epic and GOG among the compatible services for the ROG Ally X on its official product page. ASUS presents the 2025 ROG Xbox Ally as a Windows handheld for PC titles and games included with Game Pass.
Native Windows support removes one compatibility layer, but it does not make every game identical to a desktop experience. A title can still require a particular Windows version, launcher update, account, anti-cheat service, controller configuration or graphics setting. Windows also exposes more desktop controls, which can mean more setup on a small screen.
Launcher-by-launcher comparison
| Question | Steam Deck with SteamOS | Windows handhelds covered here |
|---|---|---|
| Steam library | Native SteamOS experience with Deck Verified guidance. Proton handles many Windows games, but support is game-specific. | Steam is a listed compatible launcher on the ROG Ally X. |
| Epic Games Store | SteamOS is not Windows. Valve’s cited pages describe Proton for Windows games generally, but they do not establish an effortless native Epic launcher workflow. Verify the exact game and setup path before buying. | Epic is explicitly listed as compatible with the ROG Ally X. |
| GOG | No cited Valve page establishes a native GOG launcher workflow on SteamOS. Treat each game as a separate compatibility decision. | GOG is explicitly listed as compatible with the ROG Ally X. |
| PC Game Pass | Do not assume every Game Pass PC title installs and behaves like a Steam game on SteamOS; the cited material does not establish that workflow. | ASUS promotes Game Pass on the ROG Xbox Ally and lists Xbox Game Pass for the ROG Ally X. |
| Per-game checks | Use the game’s Deck Verified status and read its notes. | Use Xbox’s handheld compatibility information where applicable, then check the game’s own requirements. |
| Interface and maintenance | SteamOS is focused on a controller-friendly Steam experience; non-Steam workflows may require more investigation. | Windows gives broad launcher access but retains Windows-style account, update and desktop management. |
Can you play Epic Games and GOG titles on a Steam Deck?
You can own a Steam Deck and still have games purchased outside Steam, but the safe answer is not that every Epic or GOG title will install with one universal, officially documented process. Valve’s documentation establishes Proton support for Windows games and the Deck Verified program; it does not, in the cited pages, promise a native Epic or GOG launcher experience.
For a non-Steam game, separate three questions:
- Can the launcher or game start on SteamOS? Proton compatibility is title-specific.
- Can you sign in and complete the launcher’s required account or update step? A game may depend on a service that behaves differently outside Windows.
- Does the game remain playable after updates? A launcher or anti-cheat change can alter compatibility even after an earlier successful setup.
If a large part of your library is in Epic or GOG, count the time and uncertainty of those checks as part of the purchase decision. A Windows handheld is the lower-friction choice when native access to those storefronts matters more than the SteamOS interface.

Is a Windows handheld better for Game Pass?
For PC Game Pass, Windows is the straightforward fit in this comparison. ASUS markets the ROG Xbox Ally around games included with Game Pass and lists Xbox Game Pass for the ROG Ally X. You still need the appropriate subscription, account and game requirements, and individual titles can have separate compatibility constraints.
On SteamOS, do not treat a Game Pass catalog as if it were a Steam library. The cited Valve material does not establish that every PC Game Pass title can be installed, updated and launched through SteamOS in the same way. If Game Pass is the center of your library, put Windows compatibility at the top of your decision list rather than trying to retrofit the catalog afterward.
What “free games” means on a handheld
“Free” describes several different arrangements. Identify which one you mean before comparing devices or offers.
Permanent store giveaways
A storefront may let you claim a game at no charge during a limited window and keep access afterward. The claim period, account region and eligibility rules matter. The available offer can change quickly; no specific live giveaway is established here, so use the relevant storefront’s current promotion page and verify its end date before promising a title.
Free-to-play games
A free-to-play game normally has no purchase price for the base download, but may require an account, online service, optional purchases or a particular launcher. Check whether the game’s anti-cheat and controller support work on your chosen operating system. A free download is not evidence that it is Deck Verified or that it will run on every Windows handheld.
Subscription-included games
Game Pass and similar subscriptions provide access while the subscription and catalog rights remain active. A title can leave the catalog, and access generally ends when the subscription or entitlement ends. Record whether you are claiming a permanent license or using a time-limited subscription before treating the game as part of your long-term library.
A safe claiming and installation checklist
- Open the official storefront or subscription page and confirm the current offer, region and claim deadline.
- Check whether the title is a permanent entitlement, a free-to-play download or a subscription inclusion.
- On Steam Deck, look for the game’s Deck Verified status and read any warnings before installing.
- On a compatible Windows handheld, check the Xbox handheld compatibility information when the title is in the Xbox ecosystem, then review the game’s own PC requirements.
- Claim or install only after confirming that the required launcher and account can be used on the operating system you selected.
- Keep the offer’s end date and entitlement conditions in mind; a subscription title is not the same as a permanent giveaway.
How to check a game before you spend money
Steam Deck: use Deck Verified as a first filter
- Find the game in the Steam store or your Steam library.
- Read the Deck Verified indicator and open its details rather than relying only on the color or headline label.
- Check notes about text legibility, controller input, launchers, performance or other requirements.
- Confirm that the game’s current version and online services match what you intend to play; compatibility can change after updates.
- If the game is outside Steam, do not transfer the Steam label to it. Verify the separate launcher and title workflow instead.
Valve’s software page is the reference for the program. If SteamOS needs repair or reinstallation, Valve’s SteamOS Installation and Repair guidance is the appropriate support source; it is not a substitute for checking a game’s compatibility.
Recommended Free Tools
Windows handheld: use the Xbox compatibility program and the game page
- For an Xbox or Game Pass title, open Xbox’s handheld compatibility page.
- Search for the individual game and read the result rather than assuming that the entire catalog has the same status.
- For Steam, Epic or GOG purchases, open the game’s own PC requirements and the launcher’s current system requirements.
- Check account, online-service and anti-cheat requirements before downloading.
- After installation, apply launcher and game updates before judging whether the title works; an outdated client can look like a hardware failure.
Why anti-cheat and other requirements deserve a separate check
A game can have modest graphics requirements yet fail on a handheld because its online protection or supporting service does not function in the chosen environment. Treat anti-cheat, launchers and required background services as compatibility requirements, not optional extras. Neither Deck Verified nor Xbox compatibility should be read as a guarantee for every future patch or every mode of a game.

Models and prices in the cited US listings
The following figures are manufacturer-page prices checked on October 13, 2026. They are not a retailer survey, and stock, configuration and promotional pricing can change. Confirm the live listing before ordering.
| Device | Operating system and positioning | Price shown in the cited US page | What the page establishes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Steam Deck OLED 512GB | SteamOS handheld centered on Steam | $949 on the returned page material | Valve lists an OLED 512GB model; verify the current configuration and price. |
| Steam Deck OLED 1TB | SteamOS handheld centered on Steam | $949 on the returned page material | Valve lists an OLED 1TB model; verify the current configuration and price. |
| ROG Xbox Ally (2025) | Windows handheld positioned around PC titles and Game Pass | $599.99 | ASUS’s US page presents the 2025 model and its Game Pass-oriented positioning. |
| ROG Ally X (2024) | Windows handheld with broad launcher compatibility | $799.99 | ASUS explicitly names Steam, Xbox Game Pass, Epic, GOG and more as compatible services. |
The identical $949 figures shown for the two listed OLED capacities are unusual enough that you should recheck Valve’s live page for the exact configuration, availability and any sale condition. Do not infer that the prices are permanent or that every regional store uses the same currency.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A decision framework for your existing library
Make a list of the games and launchers you actually use, then score each criterion by importance. The device that wins the most important criteria is usually a better fit than the one with the most attractive headline specification.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors| Priority | Favor Steam Deck when… | Favor a Windows handheld when… |
|---|---|---|
| Storefront | Your purchases are predominantly in Steam. | Your library is split across Steam, Epic, GOG, Xbox and other Windows launchers. |
| Subscription | Game Pass is occasional or not central. | PC Game Pass is a primary reason to buy the handheld. |
| Setup effort | You prefer a focused Steam interface and are willing to verify non-Steam titles individually. | You want the launchers you already use to run in their native Windows environment. |
| Compatibility confidence | You are comfortable checking Deck Verified notes for every important Steam game. | You will check Xbox handheld compatibility and each game’s Windows requirements. |
| Controls and suspend behavior | You value SteamOS’s console-style flow. | You accept Windows management in exchange for broad launcher access. |
| Hardware feel | You will choose based on the model, display, battery and ergonomics that suit you. | You will compare those same factors rather than assuming the operating system decides them. |
| Price | The current Valve listing and configuration fit your budget. | The current ASUS model and its launcher access justify its listed price. |
The cited product pages do not provide a controlled, independent comparison of battery life, frame rates, display quality, suspend behavior or ergonomics. Those are real buying criteria, but they should be evaluated from the exact model’s current specifications and reliable hands-on testing rather than inferred from launcher compatibility.

Practical setup paths
Steam-first workflow on Steam Deck
- Start with your Steam library and mark the games you consider essential.
- Check each essential game’s Deck Verified status and detailed notes.
- Install one or two priority games and test launching, controls, text and online features before filling the storage.
- For a game bought through another storefront, confirm a supported SteamOS path for that exact title; do not assume the Windows launcher will behave like Steam.
- For a free offer, claim it through the official storefront first, then verify that the title and its launcher are usable on SteamOS.
- Keep a recovery plan for SteamOS problems using Valve’s Installation and Repair documentation.
Multi-launcher workflow on Windows
- Write down every storefront and subscription tied to your library.
- Confirm that the Windows handheld model you are considering lists the services you need; ASUS explicitly lists Steam, Xbox Game Pass, Epic and GOG for the ROG Ally X.
- Sign in to each required account and install the launcher from its official source.
- For Xbox titles, check the individual game in the Xbox handheld compatibility program before downloading a large file.
- For every launcher, review the game’s PC requirements and online-service or anti-cheat dependencies.
- Test your most important game first, then adjust storage and library organization around what actually works.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Assuming a free offer works everywhere
A no-cost claim does not override operating-system compatibility. Confirm the storefront, launcher, region, claim window and device support separately.
Reading a platform label as a permanent guarantee
Deck Verified and Xbox handheld compatibility are useful checks for an individual title, not promises that every update, mode or future service change will remain compatible.
Buying for the launcher instead of the games
Windows solves the native-launcher question, but a particular game can still fail because of requirements or anti-cheat. SteamOS offers an excellent Steam path, but a non-Steam library may demand more investigation. Start with your ten most-played games, not with a generic platform preference.
Comparing prices without matching models
The listed Steam Deck OLED capacities and the two ASUS models are not a like-for-like hardware survey. Verify model year, storage, stock, regional currency and current price before treating the figures as a buying comparison.
Expecting one device to remove all maintenance
SteamOS can require title-specific compatibility checks, while Windows can require launcher, account and system maintenance. Choose the kind of maintenance you find less disruptive to your gaming routine.
Bottom line
Steam Deck is the focused choice for a Steam-heavy library and a preference for Valve’s SteamOS flow and Deck Verified guidance. A Windows handheld is the practical choice when Game Pass, Epic, GOG or several native PC launchers are central. For free games, first determine whether the offer is permanent, free-to-play or subscription-based, then verify the exact title on the operating system and storefront you intend to use. No platform makes every game equally effortless, so let your own library and its individual compatibility checks decide.
