For the broadest out-of-the-box Steam compatibility, choose the ASUS ROG Ally. Its Windows 11 operating system runs the same Windows PC builds that Steam distributes on a desktop, so it avoids the Linux compatibility layer that can block some anti-cheat systems, launchers and utilities.
Choose Steam Deck for the most console-like Steam experience. SteamOS, Valve’s Linux-based system, presents a unified library and Proton runs a very large share of Windows games. However, each title depends on its Steam Deck rating, Proton behavior, launcher support and anti-cheat implementation. There is no single percentage that proves one handheld runs a particular share of the Steam catalog reliably: results change with the game, patches, drivers, anti-cheat updates and power settings.

Valve says Proton allows the vast majority of the Steam library to run and reported more than 18,000 titles when its SteamOS information was crawled in 2026. That is a broad statement about the library, not a guarantee for every game or every update. For a purchase decision, your own must-play list matters more than a catalog-wide claim.
Why the operating system determines compatibility
Steam Deck: SteamOS plus Proton
Steam Deck uses SteamOS 3.0, a Linux-based operating system. When a game has a native Linux build, Steam can use it directly. For Windows-only games, Proton translates the Windows game’s calls so they can run on Linux. Valve maintains Proton and evaluates games against handheld-specific expectations.

This approach is why Deck compatibility is not binary. A game can launch and play well, launch only after a setting change, fail because of a launcher or anti-cheat component, or simply have no completed evaluation. A Proton update can improve one title while a game patch changes behavior later.
ROG Ally: Windows 11 and native Windows builds
The ROG Ally runs Windows 11. Steam installs the Windows version of a game, and the game communicates with Windows drivers, launchers and middleware in the normal PC path. The Ally can therefore use Steam alongside other Windows launchers and utilities without translating the game through Proton.
That direct path removes one major compatibility variable, but it does not make every title guaranteed. A game can still reject a device, require a particular driver, have controller problems, or depend on a launcher that misbehaves on a small screen. Windows also exposes more desktop maintenance than SteamOS, so recovery can involve drivers, updates or input settings.
How to read Steam Deck compatibility labels
Valve’s Steam Deck Verified program tests four areas: supported input, display readability, seamlessness and system support. System support includes the game’s Proton behavior and anti-cheat support. The label is a useful signal, but it describes the current review state rather than a permanent promise.

Valve says the review process is ongoing while tens of thousands of Steam titles and daily game updates continue to arrive. A rating can therefore change. The label also does not promise a fixed frame rate, battery life or visual quality; it addresses the compatibility criteria above.
Why the Ally usually wins on breadth
Windows-only multiplayer and anti-cheat
Some competitive games use anti-cheat software that expects Windows components or kernel-level access. Valve includes anti-cheat support in its system-support review, but Proton support is game-specific. If a must-play title relies on an anti-cheat implementation that does not work through Proton, the Deck can remain Unsupported even when the game itself is otherwise undemanding.

The Ally starts with the Windows version and is therefore the less risky choice for a library dominated by competitive multiplayer. You should still check the game’s own requirements and current driver behavior; Windows compatibility is a stronger baseline, not an unconditional guarantee.

Third-party launchers
Steam can hand a game to another launcher. On Deck, that launcher must function through Proton and present controls and sign-in screens correctly in a handheld environment. A launcher update can introduce a new failure even if the game previously worked.
On Ally, the Windows launcher runs in its native environment. Steam, Epic, EA or Ubisoft titles can coexist with the Windows desktop, although switching between launchers may feel less streamlined than SteamOS’s single-library interface.
Mods, utilities and unusual PC features
Games that depend on Windows mod managers, external overlays, virtual-reality software or specialized peripherals are more likely to need extra work on Deck. Proton can sometimes support these tools, but the compatibility rating does not turn every mod into a supported configuration. Windows on the Ally is the more flexible base for utilities, while the trade-off is more manual setup and troubleshooting.
Game Pass and non-Steam software
Windows 11 lets the Ally use PC Game Pass and other Windows applications directly. Steam Deck is optimized around SteamOS and Proton; services that require a Windows-only client may need workarounds or may not be practical. If a subscription library outside Steam is central to your handheld use, the Ally’s operating system is the safer fit.

Compatibility and performance are different questions. A game can launch on both handhelds yet feel steadier on one because of resolution, refresh rate, graphics settings or power limits.

The Ally’s Z1 Extreme option and 1080p/120Hz panel provide more raw headroom when a game can use it, but rendering at 1920×1080 is also more demanding than rendering at 1280×800. Deck’s lower target resolution can make supported games easier to run consistently within its fixed SteamOS-oriented design. Neither specification overrides a game’s compatibility status.
Audit your own Steam library before buying
A short library audit is more reliable than a generic claim about which handheld runs more games. Separate titles you must play from games you would merely like to try, then check each must-play title.
- Make a must-play list. Include multiplayer games, recently purchased games, games with separate launchers, modded titles and anything you expect to use with a headset or unusual controller.
- Open each game’s Steam store page. Look for the Steam Deck compatibility section and record whether Valve marks it Verified, Playable, Unsupported or Unknown.
- Read the qualification behind the label. A Playable result can identify small text, keyboard input, a launcher or manual settings as the reason for the lower rating. Those details matter more than the label alone.
- Flag anti-cheat and launcher dependencies. Treat these as higher-risk on SteamOS because Proton must support the complete chain, not only the game executable.
- Decide how much tinkering you accept. If you want to install and play with no compatibility work, favor Verified titles. If you are comfortable selecting a Proton version or adjusting controls, Playable titles may be fine.
- Recheck shortly before purchase and after major updates. Valve’s review is ongoing, and game patches, Proton releases and anti-cheat changes can alter the result.
Steam Deck: a reliable setup and recovery path
Start with the rating, not a workaround
Install Verified games first. For Playable games, read the notes and make one change at a time. Proton version selection is available when a title needs it; use the version recommended by current community or developer guidance rather than changing several variables simultaneously.

Keep expectations realistic for Unsupported and Unknown
An Unsupported result means Valve currently considers the game nonfunctional on Deck. It is not a challenge to solve with an accessory. An Unknown result means Valve has not completed its check, so the outcome is genuinely uncertain. If the title is essential, the Ally avoids this particular Proton-rating risk by using the Windows build.
When a previously working game breaks
First check whether the game or SteamOS recently updated. Revisit the game’s compatibility notes, try the recommended Proton version and verify that the problem is not a launcher sign-in or anti-cheat failure. If a title remains unstable after those checks, do not assume that reinstalling hardware or adding storage will change compatibility.
ROG Ally: a reliable Windows workflow
Install the Windows version and its dependencies
Install Steam in Windows 11, sign in, and install the game normally. For a title that uses another launcher, install and sign in to that launcher as required. Keep Windows, graphics drivers and the game current, because the Ally’s compatibility depends on the same software stack used by Windows PCs.

Handle controller and desktop friction
Windows gives the Ally broad software access but is not as tightly curated for handheld use as SteamOS. If a game launches without recognizing controls, check the active controller profile and whether the launcher has focus. If a game fails after an update, investigate the Windows launcher, driver or game service before blaming the hardware.

Choose the right Ally processor tier
The listed Ally family includes AMD Ryzen Z1 and Ryzen Z1 Extreme options. Both use Windows 11, so the basic Steam compatibility path is the same. The Z1 Extreme provides more performance headroom for demanding games; it does not make a Windows-incompatible title compatible.

For this comparison, reliable means more than launching once. Consider whether a game starts, accepts input, survives its launcher and anti-cheat checks, maintains an acceptable frame rate and continues working after updates.
Resolution and refresh rate
Deck’s 1280×800 display asks less of the graphics hardware than the Ally’s 1920×1080 panel. The Ally can offer a sharper image and a 120Hz refresh target, but demanding games may require reduced resolution or quality settings to use that headroom. Deck models are listed at up to 60 or 90Hz, so the available refresh rate depends on the specific Deck model.
Power modes and consistency
Higher power limits can improve performance while reducing battery endurance and increasing heat. Lower limits can make a demanding title feel less responsive. Because no universal benchmark establishes a reliability percentage for either handheld, compare the settings you actually intend to use rather than assuming the fastest mode is always the most consistent.
Updates are part of the equation
Drivers, Proton, SteamOS, Windows and game patches all change the software environment. A title that is Verified today can receive a launcher or anti-cheat change tomorrow; a previously problematic title can become Playable after a Proton update. Keep a note of your must-play ratings and check them again when a major update arrives.

Storage and accessories: useful, but not compatibility fixes
microSD expansion
Both handheld families support microSD storage. A high-capacity card is practical for a large library and lets you keep more installed games without replacing internal storage. It does not alter a game’s Steam Deck rating, add Proton support or repair a Windows launcher.
USB-C docks
A compatible USB-C dock with suitable power delivery can connect either handheld to an external display and peripherals. Docking expands connectivity; it does not change the operating system, anti-cheat support or the game executable’s compatibility.
Model and region checks
When buying a Deck OLED or an Ally, verify the exact storage, processor tier, display specification and regional availability. The commonly listed Deck OLED capacities are 512GB and 1TB. Ally listings include Ryzen Z1 and Z1 Extreme variants. Those are different purchasing choices, but neither accessory nor capacity changes whether a specific title is supported.
Decision framework
Choose ROG Ally when breadth is the priority
- Your priority is the largest possible set of Steam games working without Proton-specific exceptions.
- Your library contains anti-cheat-heavy competitive games or several third-party launchers.
- You want PC Game Pass, Windows utilities, mods or software outside Steam.
- You accept Windows-style driver, launcher and controller troubleshooting.
Choose Steam Deck when simplicity inside Steam matters most
- Most of your important games are Verified or Playable.
- You want a console-like interface centered on one Steam library.
- You prefer a lower-resolution handheld target that can feel consistent for supported games.
- You are willing to select a Proton version or adjust settings for occasional exceptions.
Use a two-question tie-breaker
- Are your non-negotiable games marked Verified or Playable on Deck today?
- Do you need Windows-only launchers, anti-cheat, Game Pass or utilities?
If the first answer is yes and the second is no, Steam Deck is the better Steam-first appliance. If the second answer is yes, ROG Ally is the safer compatibility choice even if you prefer Steam’s interface.

The ROG Ally is the more flexible option because Windows 11 runs PC Game Pass, other launchers and Windows utilities directly. Steam Deck is designed primarily around SteamOS and Proton.
