There is no universal winner. Choose a Steam Deck when most of your games are on Steam and you want a controller-first SteamOS interface. Choose the ROG Xbox Ally X (2025, RC73XA) or another Windows handheld when you need a conventional Windows desktop, several launchers, or non-Steam software. Choose the MSI Claw 8 AI+ A2VM when an Intel-powered design is specifically important and its exact game performance, availability, and price suit you.
These are product families, not interchangeable specifications. This guide compares the named generations, explains what the operating system changes, and gives a way to verify compatibility, battery life, performance, ergonomics, and total cost before buying.
The short answer: start with your games and operating system
Handheld PC decisions are often framed as AMD versus Intel or one benchmark score versus another. For most owners, the first question is simpler: where do your games live, and how much Windows do you want to manage on a small screen?
Recommended Free Tools
| Your priority | Start with | Verify before buying |
|---|---|---|
| Mostly Steam games and a console-like interface | Steam Deck OLED or LCD | Compatibility of each important game, desired variant, storage, display, and current regional price |
| Windows, multiple launchers, or a familiar PC desktop | ROG Xbox Ally X (2025) or MSI Claw 8 AI+ | Launcher support, Windows setup comfort, controls, weight, and current configuration |
| An Intel-powered handheld in particular | MSI Claw 8 AI+ A2VM | Exact SKU, game-specific testing, driver/software state, and availability |
| Long unplugged sessions | Whichever has equivalent runtime testing for your games | Matched tests at the same brightness, frame-rate limit, power mode, and game settings |
SteamOS is generally the more streamlined route for a Steam-focused library. Windows 11 offers broader software access but brings desktop setup, updates, launchers, and occasional controller or overlay troubleshooting. Neither operating system guarantees that every PC game will behave like a console game.

What is actually being compared?
“Steam Deck,” “ROG Ally,” and “Intel handheld” each describe more than one product. Mixing generations can make a comparison misleading, so the hardware below is identified by model.
Steam Deck: choose OLED or LCD, not just “a Deck”
Valve sells Steam Deck variants with different displays, batteries, storage options, and availability. Valve’s technical specifications are the controlling reference for the current hardware. Confirm whether a listing is an OLED or LCD model and check the exact storage configuration. A conclusion about one variant should not automatically be applied to the other.
ROG Xbox Ally X (2025), model RC73XA
ASUS identifies the 2025 Ally X as model RC73XA. It runs Windows 11 Home and uses an AMD Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme processor with eight cores, 16 threads, and a quoted maximum clock of up to 5.0 GHz. The opened UK specification page lists a weight of 715 g and an 80 Wh battery. Regional configurations, included chargers, and retail bundles can differ, so confirm the specification for the country and SKU you will buy.
MSI Claw 8 AI+ A2VM
MSI’s documented Intel example is the Claw 8 AI+ A2VM. It runs Windows 11 Home with an Intel Core Ultra 7 258V, has an 8-inch 120 Hz touchscreen with variable refresh rate (VRR), an 80 Wh battery, and two Thunderbolt 4 ports. MSI highlights efficiency and XeSS in its product messaging; those are vendor claims and should not be treated as proof of identical gains in every game.
SteamOS is not limited to one brand
Lenovo announced SteamOS configurations of the Legion Go S at CES 2025. That matters because operating-system choice and hardware brand are not the same decision. Availability and the exact Go S configuration can change, so verify that a specific SteamOS model is actually sold in your market before treating it as a current alternative.
SteamOS versus Windows 11 for handheld gaming
SteamOS: fewer desktop decisions when your library is on Steam
SteamOS is designed around Steam’s controller interface. Suspending a game, navigating with sticks and buttons, and returning to the library generally follow a console-like flow. Steam’s compatibility tools can run many Windows games through a compatibility layer, but support is game-specific rather than universal.
Before purchase, check every “must-play” title for anti-cheat behavior, launcher requirements, video or codec issues, and online-service restrictions. A game that starts is not necessarily a game that supports all multiplayer or mod features. Community reports can change after a game or compatibility layer update, so check current information rather than relying on an old list.

Windows 11: the broadest software environment, with more maintenance
Windows 11 Home supports PC launchers and applications beyond Steam, including stores that require Windows. It also gives you the familiar desktop for file management, mods, peripheral utilities, and other PC software. The trade-off is that a handheld screen and controller are not Windows’ primary design target. You may need the touch screen, an on-screen keyboard, a trackpad, or a dock and mouse for setup tasks.
Windows updates, graphics drivers, launcher patches, shader compilation, and background services can affect storage, battery drain, or startup behavior. The experience can be excellent once configured, but it is less appliance-like than SteamOS.
Use a title-by-title compatibility check
- List the games you expect to play most often, including multiplayer and games from non-Steam stores.
- Check the current compatibility status for the SteamOS device or Windows requirements for each title.
- Pay special attention to anti-cheat, launchers that open a browser, third-party accounts, and games that require a keyboard or external software.
- Check whether the desired performance target is realistic at the device’s native resolution or a lower resolution with upscaling.
- Recheck the two or three games that would make you regret the purchase if they failed; those titles should decide the platform.
Hardware comparison at a glance
| Model | Operating system | Processor information established by the cited specification | Display information established | Battery capacity | Other documented details |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Steam Deck OLED or LCD | SteamOS | Varies by variant; use Valve’s current technical page | Differs between OLED and LCD variants | Differs by variant | Storage and availability differ by variant |
| ROG Xbox Ally X (2025), RC73XA | Windows 11 Home | AMD Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme; 8 cores, 16 threads; up to 5.0 GHz | Exact regional display details should be confirmed on the listing | 80 Wh | 715 g on the cited UK specification page; charger and regional configuration may vary |
| MSI Claw 8 AI+ A2VM | Windows 11 Home | Intel Core Ultra 7 258V | 8-inch, 120 Hz touchscreen with VRR | 80 Wh | Two Thunderbolt 4 ports; MSI promotes efficiency and XeSS |
The table deliberately does not turn missing values into guesses. A larger screen, newer processor, or higher refresh rate can be valuable, but those attributes do not by themselves establish better frame rates, longer runtime, or better comfort.
Performance: how to compare it without being misled
Why a specification-only verdict fails
Handheld performance depends on the game engine, graphics settings, resolution, frame-rate cap, power mode, cooling, driver version, memory behavior, and whether upscaling is enabled. Two devices can exchange leads from one game to another. A processor name is useful for identifying a model, not for predicting a universal winner.
What the available testing does—and does not—show
A Windows Central review reports benchmark measurements for a tested MSI Claw configuration. Those results belong to that review’s hardware, firmware, drivers, power settings, and methods. They are not matched, same-game tests against the exact Steam Deck and Ally X configurations in this comparison. An independent 2026 comparison describes SteamOS as more streamlined for Steam and Windows as broader for software access, but its prices and qualitative conclusions are secondary reporting rather than a controlled laboratory ranking.
A fair test procedure for your shortlist
- Use the same game version and save point on every device.
- Match resolution, graphics preset, upscaling mode, frame-rate cap, brightness, and refresh-rate setting.
- Record the device’s power mode and wattage behavior; do not compare a plugged-in high-power run with a battery-saver run.
- Measure an identical play segment long enough to capture traversal and combat, not only a static menu.
- Record average frame rate, frame-time consistency, one-percent lows if available, fan noise, temperature, and battery drain.
- Repeat after updates if a driver or game patch materially changes behavior, and date the result.
When you cannot perform matched testing, describe the configuration and source instead of declaring an FPS champion. Look for evidence that names the game, device SKU, wattage or power mode, settings, tester, and test date.
Screen, controls, weight, and portability
Screen size is a usability choice
The Claw 8 AI+ provides an 8-inch 120 Hz panel with VRR. A larger display can make small interface text easier to read, while a smaller device may feel easier to hold for long sessions. Refresh rate and VRR can improve perceived smoothness when frame rates vary, but they do not create performance that the game or GPU cannot deliver.
Rank #3
- Operating System: SteamOS 3.0
For the Steam Deck and Ally X, verify the exact panel characteristics of the specific listing. Compare brightness, resolution, refresh behavior, and glare in addition to diagonal size. If you play mostly at a desk with a monitor, the built-in panel may matter less than controls, ports, and docking.
Ergonomics are as important as chip performance
Compare stick position, button reach, trigger travel, grip shape, vent placement, and weight against your hands. The cited UK Ally X specification lists 715 g; do not assume that number applies to every region or bundle. MSI and Valve variants should likewise be checked on their exact product pages.
Read comfort reports critically. A device that is faster in a short benchmark may be worse for a two-hour session if its grips, weight distribution, or heat around the hands do not suit you. If possible, buy from a retailer with a clear return policy and test the controls in the games you actually play.
Battery capacity is not battery life
Both the cited Ally X and Claw 8 AI+ list 80 Wh batteries. That is stored energy, not a promised number of gaming hours. Runtime changes with game load, frame-rate target, brightness, refresh rate, speakers, wireless radios, background processes, and power mode. Steam Deck battery capacity also varies by OLED or LCD variant.
For a meaningful comparison, seek tests that use the same game, brightness, frame-rate cap, resolution, and power profile. If a review gives only a capacity figure, it cannot answer how long your game will run. A larger battery may add weight, and a more efficient configuration may last longer even when capacities are similar.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsPractical ways to extend a session
- Set a frame-rate limit appropriate to the game rather than leaving the panel at its maximum refresh rate.
- Reduce brightness and disable radios or background software you do not need.
- Use the device’s balanced or battery profile before lowering every graphics option; then adjust settings that have the least visual cost.
- Carry a charger that meets the handheld’s power requirements, and verify USB-C charging behavior before relying on a third-party adapter.
Storage, ports, and accessories
Storage planning
Modern PC games can consume substantial storage, and shader caches, launchers, mods, and screenshots add to the total. Check the exact internal-storage configuration of the Deck, Ally X, or Claw listing. A compatible microSD card can expand a library where the device supports it, but it does not increase frame rates. Confirm supported capacity, speed expectations, and installation steps for the exact model.
Docking and external displays
A USB-C dock can turn a Windows handheld into a desk PC with a monitor, keyboard, mouse, Ethernet, and charging. Confirm the precise handheld’s power-delivery needs, display output, USB bandwidth, and port placement before buying a dock. The Claw 8 AI+ specification lists two Thunderbolt 4 ports, which can be useful for high-bandwidth peripherals, but the practical result still depends on the dock, cable, monitor, and power adapter.

A case, screen protector, dock, microSD card, or replacement charger can improve convenience. None substitutes for a platform that supports your games or for comfortable controls. Include accessories and any required Windows peripherals in the total cost.
Setup experience and common failure points
Steam Deck first setup
- Complete SteamOS updates while connected to power and Wi-Fi.
- Sign in to Steam and install one important game first rather than filling the drive immediately.
- Check its current compatibility notes, controller layout, launcher behavior, and online features.
- Set a frame-rate limit and display brightness suited to handheld play.
- Add a microSD card only after confirming its compatibility and formatting it through the device.
If a game fails to launch, check whether it relies on unsupported anti-cheat or an external launcher before repeatedly changing graphics settings. A reinstall cannot solve a platform-level incompatibility.
Windows handheld first setup
- Install Windows updates, manufacturer firmware, chipset and graphics drivers, and the control-center software supplied for the exact model.
- Connect each launcher you intend to use and enable its offline or sign-in options where supported.
- Test the built-in controls in a game and in the Windows desktop; keep a touch or mouse method available for setup.
- Set a power profile, refresh rate, frame-rate cap, and sleep behavior, then verify that the settings persist after a reboot.
- Create recovery media or confirm the manufacturer’s recovery procedure before experimenting with drivers or system partitions.
When controls stop working after an update, restart the manufacturer control service, check for a firmware or driver update, and test with the built-in gamepad diagnostic if provided. If a launcher opens off-screen or refuses controller input, use touch or a dock temporarily; the problem is usually the desktop application rather than the game’s rendering performance.

“I want a console-like Steam library”
Shortlist a Steam Deck OLED or LCD. Pick the variant whose display, battery, storage, and current price fit your needs, then verify compatibility for your essential games. This is the lowest-friction path when Steam is your main source and you do not need Windows-only software.
“I use several launchers and want a normal PC”
Shortlist the ROG Xbox Ally X (2025) and MSI Claw 8 AI+. Both named models use Windows 11 Home. Decide between their exact screen, controls, weight, ports, processor platform, configuration, and price rather than assuming all Windows handhelds feel alike.
“I specifically want Intel”
The MSI Claw 8 AI+ A2VM is the documented Intel comparison point. Confirm that the retailer’s SKU is A2VM, check game-specific testing, and verify current drivers and stock. Do not transfer its characteristics to earlier Claw generations or to every Intel handheld.

Best Value
- Valve is entering the gaming console marketplace with the new Steam Deck, a console geared towards PC gamers. The Steam Deck can be docked to a monitor, and used as a PC, or docked to a TV.
- Players can play a huge variety of games at any time with the comfort of a console and the freedom of a PC. Not anti-glare screen.
- Like the name suggests, the Steam Deck will include upgraded 1TB storage, and will include a carrying case. A micro SD slot will also enable expanded storage.
- Valve partnered with AMD to create a specialized APU optimized for handheld gaming, and Valve says the chip will deliver performance to run AAA gaming titles.
- The Steam Deck is outfitted with a 7-inch touchscreen, and two trackpads under the control sticks that allow gamers to operate games never designed outside of mouse and keyboard capabilities.
Prices, availability, and the final buying checklist
Handheld prices and configurations change by region, retailer, storage tier, promotions, and date. A comparison price from one market is not a global MSRP. Check the manufacturer page and local retailer immediately before ordering, and confirm what charger, storage, operating-system edition, and warranty are included.
- Write down the exact model and generation, not only the family name.
- Confirm that your critical games and launchers work on the chosen operating system.
- Compare measured battery tests under equivalent conditions.
- Check display characteristics, controls, weight, heat, and return terms.
- Budget for storage, a charger or dock, and any Windows peripherals you will need.
- Verify current firmware, drivers, availability, and regional warranty coverage.
The right choice is the one that meets your library and comfort requirements with the fewest compromises—not the device with the most impressive isolated specification.
Frequently asked questions
Can a Steam Deck run every PC game?
No. Compatibility varies by game, anti-cheat system, launcher, online service, and updates. Check the specific titles you care about instead of treating the Steam Deck label as a guarantee.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Is the MSI Claw 8 AI+ automatically faster because it uses Intel?
No universal conclusion is established. The Claw 8 AI+ A2VM has an Intel Core Ultra 7 258V, but game performance depends on settings, power mode, drivers, and the game engine. Use matched tests for a meaningful comparison.
Do the Ally X and Claw 8 AI+ have the same battery life because both list 80 Wh?
No. Equal capacity does not mean equal runtime. Workload, brightness, refresh rate, software, and power settings determine how long either device lasts.
Should I buy a larger microSD card to improve performance?
A compatible microSD card primarily adds storage. It does not raise frame rates. Check the exact device’s supported card type and capacity, and keep performance expectations separate from storage expansion.
