For most players, Steam Deck is the better handheld. Its Zen 2/RDNA 2 platform, 16 GB of memory, built-in controls and SteamOS integration are from a much newer performance and usability class than the 2013 Razer Edge/Edge Pro, a representative 2014-era Windows gaming tablet. The older machine still has one important advantage: Windows 8 runs native Windows software, which can make a particular legacy game, installer, mod or desktop utility easier to use. Choose between them by the games and software you actually need, not by the old Edge Pro’s isolated historical frame-rate result.
What is being compared?
There was no single specification for a “2014 handheld gaming PC.” This comparison uses the Razer Edge and Edge Pro as a documented stand-in for that period’s Windows x86 gaming tablets. The Edge launched in 2013 and combined a tablet with optional accessories: a detachable Gamepad Controller, a keyboard dock and a home dock. Other machines from the era differed, so Edge specifications should be read as a well-documented example rather than a claim about every older handheld.
Steam Deck is a purpose-built handheld PC. Valve sells an original LCD version and a current OLED version; both use the same broad Zen 2 CPU/RDNA 2 graphics generation and include a complete gamepad in the chassis. The OLED model’s published display and battery figures are listed below. None of the historical Edge Pro test results is a modern, controlled benchmark against Steam Deck.

Why the newer platform matters
Steam Deck’s four Zen 2 cores, eight RDNA 2 compute units and 16 GB of LPDDR5 are a generational step beyond a low-voltage third-generation Core processor paired with HD 4000 graphics or an optional GT 640M LE. The newer design also puts the CPU and GPU in one tightly integrated APU with a handheld-oriented power envelope. That does not guarantee a particular frame rate in every title, but it gives modern games substantially more headroom for shader compilation, higher-quality assets, and contemporary operating-system overhead.

The Edge’s 4 GB or 8 GB of DDR3 can be a hard limit for newer software, especially when the integrated graphics shares system memory. Its optional discrete GPU can help in games that use it correctly, but it adds another layer of driver and power-management behavior. Steam Deck avoids that tablet-era split-GPU configuration and presents one standard hardware target to SteamOS.
What the published frame-rate number does—and does not—prove
A 2013 Microsoft Windows Experience Blog hands-on reported Dirt 3 running at 65–70 frames per second at 1366×768 on high settings on an Edge Pro test unit. That is a useful period snapshot, not an apples-to-apples Steam Deck benchmark: it covers one game, one Edge Pro configuration, Windows drivers of that time, and a different power and software environment. Steam Deck results vary by game, selected resolution, graphics settings and the device’s power limit. No defensible universal “times faster” multiplier follows from those figures.
In practice, the Edge’s historical result is most relevant to older DirectX games from its own era. Steam Deck’s advantage is not simply a higher peak number; it is the ability to run a much broader modern PC workload while maintaining a consistent handheld control and software model.

Controls and handheld ergonomics
| Control question | Steam Deck | Edge/Edge Pro |
|---|---|---|
| Are game controls included? | Yes. The handheld has a full gamepad built into the chassis. | No. Console-style controls required the optional detachable Gamepad Controller. |
| Sticks and triggers | Full-size analog sticks with capacitive sensors and analog triggers | Gamepad accessory supplied dual analog sticks, triggers, a d-pad, buttons and hat controls |
| Extra input | Two 32.5 mm haptic trackpads, touchscreen, four assignable rear buttons and a six-axis IMU/gyro | Gamepad vibration feedback; keyboard and mouse accessories were available for desktop-style input |
| Use without the gamepad | Still a complete handheld gaming device | Tablet controls and an external keyboard/mouse are more natural for many games |
Controller-first games
Steam Deck’s built-in sticks, d-pad, triggers and buttons are always available, so a controller-first game can be launched without attaching anything. Valve describes the goal as letting players “Play PC games that were never designed to be handheld.” The fixed layout also means profiles, button prompts and wake-from-sleep behavior are designed around one known control set.

The Edge can deliver a console-like experience, but only when the Gamepad Controller is attached and supported by the particular setup. The accessory is detachable, which is useful if you want a tablet for browsing or a docked desktop, but it is another item to carry, charge and keep connected. Without it, touch controls are a poor substitute for twin sticks and physical triggers in most action games.
Mouse-like and keyboard-heavy games
Steam Deck’s trackpads, touchscreen, gyro and rear buttons let you build a control layout for strategy games, management software, shooters that benefit from fine aiming, or interfaces designed around a mouse. A rear button can be mapped to a modifier, radial menu or frequently used command while your thumbs stay on the sticks.
The Edge’s Windows tablet form can be advantageous for software that expects a keyboard, mouse or conventional desktop window. Add the keyboard dock or a USB/Bluetooth setup and it behaves like a small Windows PC. That flexibility comes at the cost of a less integrated handheld experience: the gamepad is optional, and each accessory combination changes how comfortably a title can be played.
Portability and weight
The Edge reference weighs approximately 955 g before you account for the detachable controller or dock. That is tablet-class weight for a handheld gaming device. Valve does not provide a directly comparable weight in the specifications cited here, so a precise weight-versus-weight claim would be misleading. The practical distinction is that Steam Deck’s controls are part of one purpose-built unit, while the Edge’s most console-like arrangement depends on an additional accessory.

Game compatibility: SteamOS and Proton versus Windows 8
How Steam Deck evaluates games
Steam Deck uses SteamOS and Proton, Valve’s compatibility layer for running Windows games without a native Linux build. Valve explains that Proton can allow most Windows games to run with equal or better performance on SteamOS without requiring developers to perform a full port. In the Steam catalog, Valve’s review system considers controls, text legibility, performance and system support.
| Badge | What it tells you | What you should still check |
|---|---|---|
| Verified | Valve’s review found the game meets its handheld criteria for controls, legibility, performance and system support. | Updates, mods, multiplayer services and your chosen graphics settings can still change the experience. |
| Playable | The game works with some adjustment, such as using an on-screen keyboard, changing a control layout or accepting a launcher step. | Read the store’s notes and community reports before assuming a console-like launch. |
| Unsupported | Valve has identified a blocking Proton issue, a serious performance problem or another failure under its review criteria. | Some unsupported games can improve after a Proton or game update; treat the badge as a warning, not a promise of impossibility. |
The badge is a shortcut, not a universal compatibility guarantee. Check the individual game page, its launcher requirements, anti-cheat behavior, text size and control notes. A title can be technically playable yet awkward if its interface assumes a large monitor and a mouse.
Running non-Steam games
SteamOS is not limited to games purchased through Steam. Valve’s FAQ and support documentation describe adding a non-Steam Windows game and running it through Proton. You can also force a particular Steam Play compatibility tool for one game when a different Proton version works better. This is useful for a separately installed game, an old installer or a launcher that is not represented by a standard Steam entry, but it requires more setup than a Verified title.

- Install or copy the Windows game using your chosen desktop-mode method.
- Open Steam, choose Add a Game, then Add a Non-Steam Game and select the executable or launcher.
- Open that entry’s properties and use the Compatibility setting if you need to force a specific Proton version.
- Launch once in desktop mode, complete any first-run setup, then test the controls and text at the handheld’s native resolution.
- If it fails, try another Proton version, remove a conflicting launcher overlay, or consult the game’s current compatibility notes before changing several variables at once.
What Windows 8 gives the Edge
The Edge runs Windows 8 on x86 hardware, so Windows applications and games use the native Windows operating-system model rather than a translation layer. That can be the decisive advantage for a particular legacy installer, a desktop utility, a modding tool, or a game whose launcher and copy-protection system expects old Windows behavior. Razer explicitly marketed the device as a way to run PC games and applications, with the optional gamepad supplying console-style input.
Native Windows compatibility does not mean unlimited compatibility. The Edge’s age brings older drivers, outdated graphics APIs, limited memory and possible activation or launcher problems. Modern storefront clients may no longer support Windows 8, and a title that installs may still be too demanding or awkward to control. Verify each game and launcher rather than assuming that “Windows” guarantees success.
Choosing by game and launcher
| Your situation | Usually the simpler choice | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Most games are in a current Steam library | Steam Deck | Verified/Playable labels, Proton integration, shader and runtime management, and controller profiles are surfaced in one ecosystem. |
| An old Windows installer or mod tool is essential | Edge, if that exact software is verified on the device | Native Windows execution can avoid compatibility-layer work, but aging drivers and storefront support remain risks. |
| A game relies on a launcher or multiplayer service | Check the named game on Steam Deck first; otherwise verify the Windows requirement on the Edge | Compatibility can depend on updates, anti-cheat, account services and launcher behavior, not only on graphics power. |
| You want a handheld that works immediately with no controller accessory | Steam Deck | All primary controls are built in. |
| You want a tablet that can become a small desktop with detachable controls | Edge | The accessory design favors switching between tablet, gamepad and docked configurations. |
Storage, displays and docking
Expandable game storage
Steam Deck supports UHS-I microSD cards, giving you a straightforward way to hold additional games without opening the handheld. Card performance and capacity still affect installation and load behavior, so use a genuine UHS-I card and format it through the Deck when possible. A card does not change whether a game is compatible; it only gives you more room for titles that already run.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe Edge’s documented configuration uses internal Windows storage and removable or dock-connected peripherals rather than the same integrated handheld storage workflow. If you keep an Edge for legacy software, plan where installers, driver packages and game backups will live before relying on it as your only machine.

External monitors and desktop mode
Steam Deck can drive a display through USB-C DisplayPort docking. A dock can also provide power and USB connections for a keyboard, mouse or controller, turning the same system into a desktop-like station. Check the dock’s display outputs and power behavior for your monitor; “USB-C dock” alone does not specify every resolution, refresh rate or charger combination.
The Edge’s home dock and keyboard dock were part of its original tablet-oriented design. That can make it attractive for a desk, but you are working with Windows 8 and hardware from the early 2010s. Confirm that the dock, display adapter and input devices still have compatible drivers before treating it as a modern desktop replacement.
How to test a game before you buy either device
- Name the exact edition. Record the game’s store version, launcher, DLC, multiplayer mode and whether you need mods. “The game” can hide different requirements between releases.
- Check Steam Deck status. Read the Verified, Playable or Unsupported label and its notes. Search for current reports if the game has received a major update.
- Check the control path. Look for mouse-only menus, small text, launcher keyboards, anti-cheat prompts and whether gyro or trackpad input is needed.
- Check the Windows requirement for the Edge. Confirm that the installer, graphics API, activation service and required driver still work on Windows 8 and on the Edge’s specific GPU configuration.
- Budget for setup time. Steam Deck may need a Proton override or non-Steam shortcut; the Edge may need legacy drivers, compatibility settings or an external gamepad.
- Test one variable at a time. Change the Proton version, graphics preset, resolution or controller profile separately so you know which change fixed—or caused—the problem.
Common failure modes and practical fixes
A Steam Deck game launches but controls are wrong
Open the game’s controller settings and select a community or official layout, then verify that the correct controller order is active. For mouse-heavy software, assign trackpad clicks, rear-button modifiers or touchscreen input rather than forcing a conventional gamepad layout. If text is unreadable, use the game’s scaling options or a higher display mode where available.

Read the reason attached to the badge. If the problem is a known Proton block or a performance issue, try a newer or older compatibility tool only when current reports indicate that it helps. Do not assume that changing Proton fixes server-side anti-cheat or a launcher that has stopped supporting Linux-based environments.
An old Windows game installs on the Edge but will not run
Confirm which GPU the game is using, install the last driver version appropriate to the Edge, and test Windows compatibility settings. Older titles can also depend on legacy DirectX components, removable-media checks or an activation service that no longer operates. Keep an offline installer and a backup of working configuration files if the game is important.
The Edge feels awkward as a handheld
That is often an accessory issue rather than a game setting. The detachable Gamepad Controller supplies the sticks, d-pad, triggers and buttons that the tablet body lacks. If carrying and charging that accessory is inconvenient, Steam Deck’s integrated controls are the more reliable everyday arrangement.
Which one should you buy or keep?
Choose Steam Deck when
- Your library is primarily on Steam and you want compatibility information before downloading.
- You want full-size sticks, analog triggers, trackpads, rear buttons, touchscreen and gyro in one device.
- You expect to play newer PC games or use modern handheld-focused software.
- You value UHS-I microSD expansion and USB-C DisplayPort docking.
- You prefer a console-like suspend, resume and controller workflow over maintaining an old Windows installation.
Consider a 2014-era Windows handheld when
- You have a specific legacy Windows game, installer, modding utility or desktop program that you have verified on that machine.
- You want a collectible or retro-computing project and accept aging batteries, drivers and operating-system support.
- You need direct Windows desktop behavior and are willing to carry the detachable gamepad or use keyboard and mouse accessories.
- You already own the device and the cost of preserving a working setup is lower than replacing it for one narrowly defined task.
Bottom line
Steam Deck is the clear general-purpose choice: its newer APU and memory platform, integrated controls, Proton tooling and Steam compatibility labels remove much of the friction that defined early Windows gaming tablets. The Edge remains defensible only for a verified legacy Windows requirement, a detachable tablet-and-dock workflow or a retro project. Compare the exact games and launchers you care about, because neither Steam Deck’s badges nor the Edge’s native Windows environment can guarantee every title.
