Verified means Valve has tested a game and expects it to work well on Steam Deck without extra setup. Playable means the game can work, but you may need a manual adjustment such as changing a controller layout or using a mouse or touchscreen in a launcher. Both labels describe Steam Deck compatibility and setup effort—not artistic quality, review score, or a universal promise of performance.
Steam Deck Verified and Playable at a glance
Steam Deck badges answer a practical question: how much effort should you expect before and during play on Valve’s handheld? They do not rank games, certify every future update, or guarantee a particular frame rate.
| Badge | Valve’s meaning | What you should expect |
|---|---|---|
| Verified | The game works great on Steam Deck, right out of the box. | Controller, display, launcher and system checks meet Valve’s target with no known compatibility warning requiring user intervention. |
| Playable | The game may require some manual tweaking by the user. | The game is usable, but you might change a control layout, enter a launcher with touch or a mouse, or perform another stated workaround. |
| Unsupported | The game is currently not functional on Steam Deck. | Valve currently considers the title non-functional; a later game, SteamOS or Proton update can change that assessment. |
| Unknown | Valve has not checked the game for compatibility yet. | No conclusion about whether it works. Treat the badge as unreviewed, not as approval or rejection. |
The exact explanation appears in the game’s Steam Deck Compatibility section on its Steam Store page. For Playable and Unsupported titles, that section identifies which requirements are not currently met. Read those notes instead of treating the colored badge as the whole story.

What Valve tests for a Verified rating
Valve groups its compatibility checks into four areas. A title can be mostly usable and still receive Playable if it misses one of these out-of-the-box requirements.
#1 Best Overall
- Compatible with Nintendo-Switch 1 (NOT Nintendo-Switch 2), smartphones, and tablets
- Boost your gaming experience with up to 160MB/s read for fast load times
- A2-rated app performance lets you quickly access and enjoy games and apps without lag for an enhanced gaming experience and a competitive edge
- Store more of your favorite games and other content with capacities up to 2TB
- Built to endure with temperature resistance, waterproofing, x-ray protection, and more
Input and controller behavior
A Verified game must provide full controller support, use appropriate on-screen controller icons and bring up the Steam Deck’s on-screen keyboard automatically when text entry is needed. In practical terms, the buttons shown in menus should correspond to the Deck controls, and routine play should not require you to reach for a physical keyboard.
A game that works only after selecting a community layout, remapping several buttons or manually invoking a keyboard can fall into Playable even if gameplay itself is stable. This is why two games with similar frame rates can have different badges: the rating measures the complete control experience, not just whether the executable launches.
Display, resolution and readable text
Valve checks support for the Deck’s default 1280×800 or 1280×720 resolution, sensible default settings and legible text. Menus should fit the screen without requiring obscure scaling changes, and important interface elements must remain readable at handheld viewing distance.

They mean the starting configuration is intended for the Deck’s display and does not leave you hunting through desktop-style options before you can read or operate the game.
Seamless startup and launchers
Verified titles should present no compatibility warnings and should allow controller navigation through any launcher used before the game. A launcher that opens first but requires a touchscreen tap, mouse pointer or keyboard command is a common reason for a title to be Playable.
The launcher requirement matters even when the game itself has excellent gamepad support. Valve evaluates the path from pressing Play to reaching the main menu, not only the minutes spent in a level.
System support, Proton and middleware
SteamOS is Linux-based. Valve supplies the Proton compatibility layer so many Windows games can run without a native Linux version. Verified testing includes Proton support for the game and its middleware, including anti-cheat systems when Proton is used.

A game can therefore be marked Playable or Unsupported because of a system dependency rather than a graphics problem. An anti-cheat update, a launcher service or another middleware component can prevent a title from meeting the system-support check even when its single-player code appears straightforward.
What Playable means in everyday use
Playable is not a synonym for “runs badly.” It means Valve found a path to play the game but identified a step, limitation or inconsistency that keeps it from the no-touch Verified standard. Many Playable games provide a good experience once that step is completed.
Typical manual steps
- Selecting a different controller configuration before launching.
- Using the touchscreen or a mouse to navigate a launcher that is not fully controller-friendly.
- Opening the on-screen keyboard manually for a text field.
- Accepting a warning, changing a setting or completing a one-time setup screen.
- Using keyboard-and-mouse input for a particular menu or function.
Valve’s own examples include changing controller configurations and using a mouse or touchscreen to navigate a launcher. Those are compatibility-workflow issues, not an automatic judgment that the game is unstable or unpleasant to play.
How much effort is acceptable?
For a console-like experience, choose Verified first. Consider Playable when you are comfortable making a small configuration change or touching the screen during startup. The Store’s written compatibility note is decisive: “Playable” with a one-time launcher click is a very different purchase from “Playable” because important text is unreadable or a required feature does not work.

Unsupported and Unknown are different warnings
Unsupported: currently considered non-functional
Unsupported means Valve currently considers the game not functional on Steam Deck. It is a warning to avoid assuming that ordinary settings changes will solve the problem. The failure may involve anti-cheat, a launcher, a required Windows component or another system dependency.
“Currently” is important. Valve’s ratings are not permanent compatibility certificates. A developer can add controller or anti-cheat support, or Valve can fix a Proton issue, and a later assessment can change the badge. Check the live Store details before revisiting an Unsupported game rather than relying on an old screenshot.
Unknown: not reviewed by Valve
Unknown says only that Valve has not checked the title in the Verified program. It is not evidence that the game works, and it is not evidence that it fails. If you buy an Unknown title, you are accepting uncertainty that a tested badge would otherwise reduce.

How to check a game’s real compatibility notes before buying
- Open the game’s page in the Steam Store, using the Deck or another browser.
- Find the Steam Deck Compatibility section near the purchase and platform information.
- Read the written details, not just the Verified, Playable, Unsupported or Unknown label.
- For Playable or Unsupported games, identify the unmet requirement: controller configuration, launcher input, display/readability, Proton, anti-cheat or another listed item.
- Match that requirement to your tolerance. A one-time touchscreen action may be acceptable; a broken online mode or unreadable interface may not be.
- Check the date of your information and the game’s recent update history. Ratings can change as software changes.
The compatibility panel is the authoritative buying clue because it explains the specific failed or conditional check. A badge without its note cannot tell you whether the issue is trivial, recurring or fundamental.

| Your priority | Most suitable badge | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Start playing with no configuration | Verified | Valve’s target is an out-of-box controller, display, launcher and system experience. |
| Comfortable with one small workaround | Playable | The game can function after the manual step described in the Store notes. |
| Need dependable online or anti-cheat operation | Verified, after reading the note | System and middleware support are part of Valve’s checks; do not infer online behavior from the color alone. |
| Willing to experiment with an untested title | Unknown | You may discover that it works, but Valve has not supplied a compatibility assessment. |
| Considering a title currently marked non-functional | Wait or verify a recent change | Unsupported can improve, but the current rating is a warning that normal play is not expected. |
This framework describes setup risk, not game quality. A Verified game can still be a poor match for your preferred genre, and a Playable game can be excellent once its stated workaround becomes routine.
What to do when a Playable game needs setup
Controller configuration issue
- On the game’s library page, open the controller layout or controller settings entry.
- Choose the layout recommended in the game’s compatibility note, if one is named.
- Test movement, camera control, face buttons, triggers and menu navigation before starting a long session.
- Save the layout so it remains selected for the next launch.
If the game displays keyboard prompts after you select a layout, that may be the reason for the Playable rating. It does not necessarily indicate a fault; it indicates that the controls are not fully aligned with Valve’s Verified expectations.
Launcher requires touch or a mouse
- Launch the game while the Deck is connected to the internet if the launcher requires sign-in or an update.
- Use the touchscreen or connect a mouse to move the pointer and select the launcher controls.
- Complete sign-in, update or game-selection steps.
- Once the game reaches a controller-navigable menu, disconnect the mouse if you prefer handheld-only play.
Expect to repeat the launcher interaction after some updates or account changes. The Store note tells you that the extra input is part of the current compatibility state.
Text-entry or keyboard limitation
When a title asks for a name, code or search term, invoke the Deck’s on-screen keyboard if it does not appear automatically. If the game repeatedly requires desktop keyboard commands, decide whether that interruption is acceptable; repeated keyboard dependence is more burdensome than a one-time field during setup.
Verified does not guarantee perfect performance
Verified is a compatibility target, not a universal performance guarantee. The program checks whether the game works with the Deck’s controls, display, launch path and system software. It does not promise that every scene will maintain a particular frame rate, that every future patch will behave identically or that your preferred graphics settings will match Valve’s defaults.
- Game updates can introduce new bugs or change graphics defaults.
- SteamOS and Proton updates can fix one title while exposing a different regression.
- Optional mods, overlays and third-party services can alter behavior from the tested configuration.
- Storage speed, thermal conditions, battery mode and user-selected settings can affect loading and performance.
Use the badge to estimate compatibility friction. Use the game’s own settings, update notes and current community reports—when you choose to consult them—for decisions about frame rate, battery life or visual quality. Do not turn a Verified label into a promise Valve did not make.

Why a game’s badge can change
Valve describes compatibility ratings as a snapshot. On March 4, 2022, Valve explained that ratings can change when developers add controller support or anti-cheat support and when Valve fixes Proton bugs or adds functionality.
Valve gave a specific example: if a game shows controller glyphs correctly 99 percent of the time but occasionally tells the player to “press F,” it is classified as Playable rather than Verified. The example shows how a small, recurring inconsistency can determine the badge even when most of the game works normally.
For that reason, record the date when you check a title and revisit the live compatibility details after major game, SteamOS or Proton updates. An old badge image is historical evidence, not a permanent status.
Do LCD and OLED Steam Decks use different badge meanings?
No. Valve says titles tested through the Steam Deck Verified program retain their ratings on both Steam Deck LCD and OLED models. Verified, Playable, Unsupported and Unknown therefore mean the same thing on those two Deck versions.
The shared badge does not eliminate every hardware or software difference. Individual performance can still vary with game updates, SteamOS and Proton versions, graphics settings, temperature and power limits. The rating tells you about the tested compatibility standard, not that every setting behaves identically on both screens.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How SteamOS and Proton fit into the badges
SteamOS uses Linux as its operating-system foundation. Proton translates or supplies Windows game functionality so a large catalog can run without a native Linux port. Valve’s Verified program calls out games that do not run well on SteamOS and checks whether Proton and required middleware support the title.
This explains why a Windows game can receive Verified even without a Linux-native build: the relevant question is whether the Proton-based path delivers the required Deck experience. It also explains why an apparently simple game can be Playable or Unsupported when a launcher, anti-cheat component or other middleware does not cooperate with Proton.

Storage expansion does not change a compatibility badge
The Steam Deck includes a high-speed microSD card slot, so a Steam Deck-compatible microSD card can be useful when installing a large library. Storage capacity affects how many games you can keep installed and may affect loading characteristics, but it does not change a game’s Verified or Playable status.
Do not buy additional storage expecting it to fix a controller, launcher, display or Proton problem. Those are the areas Valve evaluates for compatibility; available gigabytes are a separate hardware consideration.
Common questions answered by the badges
Can I play a Playable game?
Usually, the badge means Valve found a way to use the game, with the manual step described in the Store’s compatibility details. Read that note before buying because the required intervention can range from a quick controller change to a recurring keyboard or launcher dependency.

No. Playable identifies a missed compatibility requirement or needed workaround. It can reflect input or launcher friction even when the game’s actual play is stable.
What does Unsupported actually mean?
Valve currently considers the game non-functional on Steam Deck. Treat it as a strong warning, while remembering that later game, Proton or SteamOS changes can lead to a new assessment.
Are Verified games guaranteed to run perfectly?
No. Verified is Valve’s out-of-box compatibility target. Updates, settings, optional software and changing Proton or SteamOS behavior can still affect performance or introduce problems.
Do the badges mean something different on OLED?
No. Valve carries tested ratings across LCD and OLED Deck models, although game performance can still vary with updates and settings.

Choose Verified when you want the closest thing to a console-style start: install, press Play and use the Deck controls without intervention. Choose Playable when the Store note describes a workaround you are willing to perform. Treat Unsupported as currently non-functional and Unknown as unreviewed. Always read the written compatibility details and check them again after major updates, because these labels describe a changing SteamOS-and-Proton snapshot rather than a permanent quality score.
