The practical way to customize a Steam Deck is to combine three different tools: Decky Loader provides the community plugin launcher, CSS Loader applies visual styling to Steam, and Desktop Mode supplies the Linux desktop used for setup and other applications. They are complementary, not interchangeable. Use CSS Loader for appearance, Decky plugins for added functions, and Desktop Mode when you need desktop software or to run Decky’s installer.

The three customization routes are different jobs

Steam Deck customization is easier to understand when the roles are separated. A theme is not the same thing as a plugin, and Desktop Mode is not another theme engine. The following comparison shows where each option fits.

Route Primary purpose Where you use it What to expect
CSS Loader Visual styling for Steam Installed from Decky’s store in Gaming Mode Changes the look of desktop Steam and Big Picture mode; it does not provide general desktop applications.
Decky Loader Launcher and manager for community plugins Installed through a Desktop Mode workflow, then accessed from Gaming Mode Adds a plugin browser and a place to run installed extensions. Plugin quality, compatibility and maintenance vary by developer.
Desktop Mode General-purpose Linux desktop and setup environment Power menu in SteamOS Lets you install and run desktop applications and is the environment used by Decky’s documented installer process.

Decky Loader and CSS Loader normally work together: Decky supplies the store and launcher, while CSS Loader handles the visual layer. Desktop Mode supports the setup process and broader computer tasks, but switching to it does not itself install a theme or a plugin.

Choose the route that matches your goal

You only want a different look

Start with CSS Loader. It is a styling engine for Steam that can customize both the regular desktop Steam interface and Big Picture mode. On a Steam Deck, the documented installation path is through Decky’s built-in store, so Decky must be present first.

You want controls or information that Steam does not provide

Install Decky Loader and then choose plugins for the specific function you need. The project lists examples such as menu styling, system sounds, screen saturation and additional system settings. Those examples illustrate the range of possible extensions; they are not a promise that every plugin remains available or compatible with every SteamOS release.

You need to install desktop software

Use Desktop Mode. Valve describes the Deck as providing access to a Linux desktop where applications can be installed. Desktop Mode is therefore the right place for browser-based downloads, desktop utilities and the Decky installer, even if you return to Gaming Mode for ordinary play.

You want a complete customization setup

A common sequence is Desktop Mode for the initial Decky installation, Gaming Mode for installing CSS Loader from the Decky store, and then Gaming Mode for selecting plugins and visual settings. This sequence keeps each tool in the environment where it is intended to operate.

Prepare the Deck before installing community software

  • Have network access. Decky’s installer and its store need to download files, and themes or plugins may need updates later.
  • Decide which release channel you need. Decky identifies its stable release as the version intended for most users. Prereleases are aimed primarily at plugin developers and may not be fully stable.
  • Plan your input method. A keyboard and mouse are conveniences rather than requirements. Decky documents USB-C and Bluetooth connections, and also describes using the built-in trackpad and on-screen keyboard.
  • Use trusted sources. The Decky project does not recommend installing plugins from untrusted sources. Prefer the project’s documented installer and the built-in plugin browser instead of random downloads.
  • Expect community maintenance. Decky is a homebrew plugin launcher, not a Valve-supported plugin system. Individual plugins are maintained by their own developers, so update timing and compatibility differ.

These precautions do not make every extension risk-free, but they reduce the most avoidable problems: choosing a development build when you need reliability, downloading an altered package, or being caught without a convenient way to type in Desktop Mode.

How to install Decky Loader

Decky’s maintainers document an installation flow that starts in Desktop Mode and finishes by returning to Gaming Mode. The labels below follow that project guidance.

  1. Open the SteamOS Power menu.
  2. Choose Switch to Desktop to enter Desktop Mode.
  3. Open a browser and download the Decky installer file from the project’s repository.
  4. Run the downloaded installer. Follow its prompts and choose a release version.
  5. Select the stable release for a normal user setup. Choose a prerelease only when you have a specific reason to test it or you are developing plugins.
  6. When installation finishes, launch the Return to Gaming Mode shortcut.
  7. In Gaming Mode, open the Quick Access menu and look for the plug-in icon. That icon is the usual entry point for Decky and its installed extensions.

The installer is a project-provided workflow, not an official Valve component. If a prompt or label changes in a future SteamOS or Decky release, use the current instructions in the project repository rather than downloading an installer from an unknown mirror.

Keyboard and mouse are optional

Desktop Mode is more comfortable with a physical keyboard and mouse, especially when entering URLs or naming downloaded files. Decky’s instructions describe USB-C and Bluetooth connections. If you do not have those accessories, the Deck’s trackpad and on-screen keyboard can complete the same basic setup.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Stable versus prerelease

The stable channel is the sensible default when your priority is a predictable Gaming Mode experience. A prerelease can contain changes that have not received the same level of stabilization and may expose plugin developers to new behavior sooner. Installing a prerelease is not a general performance upgrade; it is a compatibility trade-off.

How to install themes with CSS Loader

CSS Loader is the visual customization component. DeckThemes describes it as a styling engine for Steam, including both desktop Steam and Big Picture mode. On Steam Deck/Linux, its documented installation route is the Decky store.

  1. Return to Gaming Mode if you are in Desktop Mode.
  2. Open the Quick Access menu.
  3. Select the plug icon to open Decky.
  4. Open the store.
  5. Search for CSS Loader.
  6. Select Install.

After installation, open CSS Loader from the Decky interface and use the styling controls and theme entries it presents. The exact list and appearance of themes can change as theme authors update their work. A theme affects Steam’s interface; it does not change the underlying games, install Desktop Mode applications, or turn a plugin into an official Steam feature.

What a CSS theme can and cannot do

  • It can: alter colors, spacing, typography, panels and other supported visual elements of Steam’s interfaces.
  • It cannot: replace Decky’s plugin launcher, provide a general Linux desktop, or guarantee that every screen remains visually identical after a Steam client update.

If a theme looks incomplete after an update, first disable that theme in CSS Loader and check whether the unmodified interface returns. That separates a theme compatibility problem from a broader Decky or SteamOS problem.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How Decky plugins work

Decky Loader is a launcher and manager. Plugins are separate projects that add functions or modify parts of the Deck experience. The launcher does not make every plugin equally reliable: each plugin has its own developer, release schedule and compatibility decisions.

Install from the built-in browser

  1. Open Quick Access in Gaming Mode.
  2. Select the plug icon to open Decky.
  3. Open the plugin browser or store.
  4. Read the plugin’s description and look for signs that it is maintained for your current SteamOS and Decky environment.
  5. Install the plugin, then open its settings from Decky.
  6. Change one major setting at a time and test it in the screen or menu it affects.

The browser is the safer default because the Decky project specifically advises against untrusted plugin sources. If a plugin asks you to bypass the normal browser or execute an unrelated script, stop and verify the project’s documentation before proceeding.

Examples of plugin categories

Category Typical use Potential maintenance concern
Menu styling Changes the look or arrangement of supported menus Steam client interface changes can move or rename the elements the plugin modifies.
System sounds Customizes sound effects used by the Deck interface Sound settings may need to be reapplied after an update or a reset.
Screen saturation Adjusts the perceived color intensity of the display Results depend on the display and the rest of the Deck’s image settings.
Additional system settings Exposes controls that are not part of the standard interface System-level changes can be more sensitive to SteamOS updates than cosmetic changes.

These categories are examples documented by the Decky project, not a guarantee that a particular extension is currently listed. Check the live listing and its maintainer notes before installing.

What Desktop Mode is—and what it is not

Desktop Mode is the Deck’s Linux desktop environment. Valve’s product material describes access to a Linux desktop and the ability to install applications. Valve’s support information also documents Deck controls while you are in Desktop Mode.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That makes Desktop Mode useful for three separate tasks:

  • Setup: running the documented Decky installer.
  • General computing: installing and using desktop applications that are not Steam games.
  • File and account management: handling downloads and other desktop tasks with a traditional windowed interface.

Desktop Mode does not replace Gaming Mode’s Quick Access menu, and it does not provide CSS Loader or Decky automatically. You can use Desktop Mode instead of Gaming Mode for desktop applications, but Decky’s documented plugin and theme workflow still returns to Gaming Mode for day-to-day use.

Switch between modes without confusing their roles

Use the Power menu to switch from Gaming Mode to Desktop Mode. Use the desktop shortcut labeled Return to Gaming Mode to go back. If you are troubleshooting a plugin or theme, note which mode you are in before changing settings; a control visible in Desktop Mode may not exist in Gaming Mode, and vice versa.

Maintenance after SteamOS or Steam client updates

Community customization has an ongoing maintenance cost. Decky’s maintainers explicitly warn: “Sometimes Decky will disappear on SteamOS updates.” This means an update can leave the launcher absent or unusable even though the Deck itself is working normally.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If Decky disappears

  1. Confirm that the Deck finished its SteamOS update and rebooted normally.
  2. Switch to Desktop Mode through the Power menu.
  3. Rerun the Decky installer from the project’s repository.
  4. Install or select the stable branch first.
  5. Return to Gaming Mode and check for the plug icon in Quick Access.
  6. If the stable installation does not restore Decky, consult the project’s current troubleshooting guidance. The maintainers mention a prerelease as another troubleshooting option, but it is less conservative than staying on stable.

Reinstalling Decky is a recovery step, not proof that every installed plugin will remain compatible. An extension can still need its own update or removal after the launcher returns.

If you no longer want Decky

The project documents rerunning its installer to uninstall Decky. Use that documented uninstaller path rather than deleting random files from Desktop Mode. Removing the launcher may also remove the access point for its plugins, so record any settings you want to restore before uninstalling.

Troubleshooting common problems

The plug icon is missing after installation

Make sure you actually returned to Gaming Mode after running the installer. If Decky was present before a SteamOS update, follow the project’s documented recovery path: switch to Desktop Mode and rerun the installer, starting with the stable branch.

CSS Loader cannot be found

CSS Loader is installed through Decky’s built-in store on Steam Deck/Linux. Verify that Decky itself opens from the plug icon, then search the store for the exact name CSS Loader. If Decky is missing, repair Decky first; searching from an ordinary Steam store will not install a Decky plugin.

A theme causes visual glitches

Disable the theme in CSS Loader and check the standard Steam interface. If the problem disappears, leave the theme disabled until its maintainer updates it. Avoid installing multiple visual modifications at once while diagnosing the issue, because overlapping styles can make the source difficult to identify.

A plugin stops working while Decky still opens

That points more strongly to the individual plugin than to the launcher. Review the plugin’s listing and maintainer notes, disable it, and test Gaming Mode again. Do not assume that reinstalling Decky will repair a plugin that has not been updated for a changed Steam interface.

Desktop Mode is difficult to navigate without accessories

Connect a keyboard or mouse over USB-C or Bluetooth if available. Otherwise, use the Deck’s trackpad for pointer movement and the on-screen keyboard for text entry, as described in Decky’s setup guidance.

You installed a plugin from an untrusted source

Disable or remove it and return to the built-in browser and documented project instructions. The Decky project advises against untrusted plugin sources; a convenient download is not evidence that a package is safe or maintained.

A lower-risk customization workflow

If you want a dependable setup rather than the largest possible collection of modifications, use this order:

  1. Install Decky through Desktop Mode and select the stable release.
  2. Return to Gaming Mode and confirm that the plug icon appears.
  3. Install CSS Loader from Decky’s built-in store if visual customization is your priority.
  4. Apply one theme and test the menus you use most often.
  5. Add plugins individually, beginning with the function that matters most to you.
  6. After a SteamOS or Steam client update, check Decky and your most important plugin before adding anything else.
  7. If Decky disappears, rerun the installer instead of repeatedly reinstalling unrelated plugins.

This staged approach makes it clear which change introduced a problem and keeps recovery manageable when community software has to catch up with an update.

What to expect from community customization

The strongest reason to use these tools is flexibility: you can change Steam’s visual presentation, add interface functions and use the Deck as a Linux desktop. The trade-off is maintenance. Decky and its plugins are community-maintained, CSS themes depend on a changing Steam interface, and the Decky project warns that SteamOS updates can make the launcher disappear until it is reinstalled or repaired.

For a stable everyday Deck, keep the stable Decky channel, install through documented or built-in paths, and treat each plugin as an independent project. For experimentation, prereleases and additional extensions can broaden what the Deck does, but they also increase the number of components that may need attention after an update.
