There is no Valve-set free-space target that every Steam Deck owner needs to keep available. Check Steam > Settings > Storage, compare the free space shown there with the install sizes of the games you want, and leave a flexible buffer for updates and your own files. The right amount depends on your games and how you use the Deck.
How to work out how much space you need
- Check available storage: Open Steam > Settings > Storage. Review the free space shown for the internal drive and any connected microSD card.
- List the games you plan to install: Check each game’s current storage requirement, then add the figures together. Treat them as estimates, since updates and optional content can change the space a game uses.
- Leave room for changing needs: Keep additional space available for game updates, downloaded content, and personal files. Choose a buffer that fits your library and habits; Valve does not specify a universal reserve in gigabytes or as a percentage.
This approach is more useful than estimating how many games fit based on a generic average. Games vary in size, and your free space can change as you install content or store files.
Why the storage number on the box is not your free game space
A device’s stated capacity is not the same as the space currently available for new game installations. The live Storage screen is the practical place to check what is free on your own Deck. Valve’s 2022 booklet described internal-storage options ranging from 64 GB to 512 GB and the option to add up to 2 TB of microSD storage; those are figures from that booklet, not a current retail-model list. Use a microSD card to add game storage
A microSD card is the straightforward expansion route covered by Valve’s support guidance. Valve says, “Any UHS-I (class 3 or better) microSD card is supported.” UHS-II and UHS-III cards are also expected to work, but their higher transfer speeds are not supported. Format the card on the Deck
- Insert the microSD card.
- Open Steam > Settings > System > Format SD card.
- Follow the on-screen instructions. Steam Deck formats the card for use with the device; Valve identifies the filesystem as ext4 with casefolding.
A card’s advertised capacity tells you how much storage it adds, not how many games it will hold. Install sizes differ, so compare the free space shown in Storage with the requirements for the games you want rather than relying on a promised game count.
Choose between a microSD card and an internal SSD upgrade

Can you play games offline to save storage?
Offline play does not reduce the space an installed game uses. Valve says an installed game can be played while the Steam Deck is offline unless that game requires an internet connection. Downloading games and online multiplayer require an internet connection. Valve’s Steam Deck FAQ
