The most reliable Steam Deck setup for a free survival or roguelike game is a per-game profile with a frame-rate cap the hardware can hold continuously. Start at 40 FPS when frame time stays steady; use a locked 30 FPS when it does not. Match the screen refresh rate to that cap when practical, begin with the game’s Low or Steam Deck preset, and add lower resolution or FSR only when rendering load is the problem. Keep TDP at its default until the target is stable, then reduce it gradually only if performance remains unchanged.
Set up a per-game performance profile first
Steam Deck settings that work in one title can be poor in another. Free-to-play survival games may be CPU-limited by large crowds, simulation and networking, while a roguelike can stutter when it compiles shaders or loads a new room. Use a profile for each game instead of changing global settings and hoping every title behaves the same.
- Launch the game and open the Quick Access menu with the … button.
- Open the performance section and enable the per-game profile option.
- Turn on the performance overlay so you can see frame rate, frame time and battery information while testing.
- Choose a frame-rate limit before changing graphics quality. A cap that the Deck can sustain is more useful than an uncapped peak followed by repeated drops.
- Play a representative session: move through a busy area, trigger a large encounter and load several rooms or zones. Those moments reveal instability that a quiet opening area can hide.
Change one setting at a time and test the same type of scene again. This makes it possible to identify whether a problem comes from CPU work, GPU rendering, shader compilation, a compatibility layer or a display setting.
Choose a frame-rate target by consistency, not by the highest number
Frame pacing is the interval between frames. A game that delivers 30 frames at regular intervals usually feels better than one that reports 45 or 50 FPS but repeatedly pauses and falls back. Watch for a nearly flat frame-time graph and predictable controller response rather than treating the largest FPS number as the goal.

Valve describes a “rock solid 40fps in game, with a 40hz updating screen” as an experience in which every screen update presents a new frame. That is why a stable 40/40 combination can feel smoother than a variable output at a higher nominal rate. If 40 FPS is not sustainable, a consistent 30 FPS is the safer choice.
Match refresh rate to the cap
The Steam Deck LCD display is capped at a 60 Hz refresh rate. The OLED display is capped at 90 Hz, according to Valve’s current Steam Support guidance checked in 2026. Open the Quick Access performance panel, select the display or refresh-rate control, and choose a mode that fits the frame-rate limit when the game and SteamOS expose it.
- 30 FPS: 60 Hz is a clean match because the display can present each frame for two refresh cycles.
- 40 FPS: 40 Hz is the direct pairing Valve uses in its guidance. It is available only when the Deck and current software expose that mode.
- 45 FPS: 90 Hz provides two refresh cycles per frame on OLED hardware, provided the game can hold 45 FPS.
- 60 FPS: 60 Hz is the LCD maximum and also works as a lower-than-maximum mode on OLED.
If a chosen refresh mode is unavailable, keep the frame cap at a value the game can sustain and judge the result by frame-time consistency. Do not raise the cap merely to fill the panel’s maximum refresh rate.

Begin with the game’s own preset
Select Low or a named Steam Deck preset as the starting point. These presets usually reduce expensive effects together, giving you a known baseline. Once the target is stable, raise individual options that matter most to you instead of switching everything to Ultra at once.

Lower resolution when the GPU is the bottleneck
A lower internal resolution reduces the number of pixels the GPU must shade. Use the game’s resolution menu or its rendering-scale control, then check the performance overlay in a demanding scene. Text, thin lines and distant objects will look softer as resolution falls, so stop lowering it when the visual trade-off is no longer acceptable.
Use FSR when the game supports it
FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR) renders internally at a lower resolution and reconstructs the image for the Deck’s display. Enable it in the game’s graphics menu when available, choose a moderate scaling option first, and compare motion and text at the same frame-rate cap. More aggressive scaling can improve GPU headroom but may introduce blur, shimmering or loss of fine detail. FSR cannot fix a CPU-limited game, shader-compilation pauses or network stalls; it only reduces rendering work.
If the title offers both an in-game scaler and a SteamOS-level scaling option, test one at a time. Two scaling stages can make the image softer without solving the actual bottleneck. Keep the setting that produces the clearest image at the required frame time.

Leave the thermal design power (TDP) control at its default while finding a frame-rate target. The default gives the processor and GPU normal performance headroom, which is important when a survival game suddenly spawns many entities or a roguelike enters a new effect-heavy room.

After you have confirmed that the game holds its cap, lower TDP in a small step and replay the same demanding section. If the frame-time graph remains stable, the change may reduce battery draw and heat. If frame time rises, inputs feel delayed or the cap is missed, restore the previous value. There is no universal TDP number that suits every title; the useful limit depends on whether that game is CPU- or GPU-bound and on its current workload.
Read the overlay to identify the real cause of stutter
Use the performance overlay as a diagnostic tool, not just an FPS counter. A reported average can look healthy while individual frames arrive late.
- GPU utilization high and GPU frequency busy: reduce resolution, enable FSR or lower expensive effects such as shadows and volumetrics.
- GPU utilization modest but frame time spikes during crowds or simulation: the CPU is likely limiting performance. Lowering resolution will have little effect; use a lower cap such as 30 FPS and reduce simulation-heavy options if the game provides them.
- Spikes occur when new effects or areas appear, then stop: shader compilation or asset streaming may be responsible. Allow the game to finish a first pass through common areas before judging steady-state performance.
- Network events coincide with pauses or rubber-banding: distinguish online latency from rendering stutter. A lower graphics setting will not repair an unstable connection or a server-side delay.
- Performance worsens as the session continues: check heat and power behavior, then test the same scene after a short cooldown. Do not assume a lower cap is needed until you compare frame times under similar conditions.
Frame pacing is the deciding measurement. If the cap is 40 FPS, a graph with regular 25-millisecond frame times is preferable to one that alternates between very short and very long frames even when its FPS readout sometimes exceeds 40.
Check compatibility before chasing graphics settings
Verify the Deck Verified status
Valve’s Deck Verified criteria include support for the Deck’s default resolution, good default settings, legible text and Proton support when Proton is used. A game without that designation can still run, but you may need manual controls, a different compatibility tool or workarounds that a graphics preset cannot provide. Check the game’s status in your Library before spending time on fine-grained tuning.

Test another Proton tool when behavior is abnormal
For a Windows build running through Proton, open Library > select the game > Properties > Compatibility. Enable the option to force a compatibility tool and test the Proton versions offered by SteamOS. Restart the game after changing the tool and repeat the same scene test. Record which version removes crashes, missing text or unusual shader behavior; do not change several compatibility settings at once.
Native Linux support and Proton builds can differ in shader caches, input handling and performance. A title that runs smoothly after a Proton change may still need its own frame cap and graphics profile.
A practical tuning sequence for survival and roguelike games
- Establish the baseline: use the Low or Steam Deck preset, default TDP and the panel’s normal refresh mode.
- Test 40 FPS: run through the busiest scene you can reliably reproduce. Keep 40 only if frame time remains consistent.
- Fall back to 30 FPS when necessary: a locked 30 is preferable to repeated drops from 40, 45 or 60.
- Match refresh rate: choose 40 Hz for a 40 FPS target when available, 60 Hz for a 30 or 60 FPS target, or 90 Hz for a stable 45 FPS target on OLED.
- Address a GPU limit: lower resolution or enable FSR, then retest the same scene.
- Address a CPU or simulation limit: keep the resolution, lower the frame-rate target and reduce simulation-heavy options if present.
- Check first-run effects: revisit areas after shaders and assets have had an opportunity to compile or cache.
- Optimize battery life last: reduce TDP in small steps only while the selected cap remains stable.
- Save the profile: leave the settings in the per-game profile so another title is not affected.
Troubleshooting common failure modes
The game still stutters at a low preset
Confirm that the cap is actually applied and inspect frame time rather than average FPS. If spikes are tied to new effects, let shader compilation settle and test again. If spikes track crowds, physics or simulation, use a lower cap and investigate CPU-related options. If the issue follows network events, troubleshoot connectivity separately.
FSR makes the image unreadable
Use a less aggressive scaling mode, raise the internal resolution, or disable FSR and lower individual effects instead. Preserve legible menus and combat information; a small GPU gain is not worthwhile if text and silhouettes become difficult to read.

Lowering TDP causes sudden dips
Return to the previous TDP and verify stability at the same cap. A setting that works in an empty area may fail when enemy counts, weather effects or map streaming increase the workload.
The game ignores the expected Deck controls or resolution
Review its Deck Verified status and test another Proton tool through the Compatibility page. Confirm that the game is using the Deck’s display resolution and that text is legible before changing advanced graphics options.
What to expect from LCD and OLED models

The refresh-rate ceiling does not guarantee that a particular game can reach the corresponding FPS. It only defines what the panel can display; the game’s CPU workload, GPU workload, shaders and compatibility layer determine whether the cap is sustainable.

Maintenance is separate from performance tuning
Valve has announced replacement parts and repair guides for Steam Deck hardware. That information is relevant when a device needs maintenance, but replacing a part is not a settings change and should not be the first response to ordinary frame-time variation. Establish the software profile, verify temperatures and compatibility, and use repair guidance only when there is a hardware fault or a maintenance need.
